cincinnati last night. no word if the game will be continued, the focus is on damar hamlin's health. >> todd: so many unanswered questions, thank you. we will try to answer the medical ones with dr. not dr. nesheiwat. we are all in shock by what we saw and the response we've seen since. the latest medical update, cardiac arrest and sedated in critical condition. what should we take from that latest update and what happened to him? >> good morning, todd and ashley, this is a sad and rare situation. what we think may have happened, he got struck in the chest with the helmet of the opposite player, it may have put his heart into a state of cardiac arrest, whichen moos the heart stopped or started shaking

irregularly. your heart can be the pump blood to the rest of your body, brain, kidney and liver, that is when we saw him collapse. we don't know if this is the cause, this is what we expects, we saw this with blunt force trauma to the chest. we see it like when a pitcher is struck in the chest with a fast-shooting ball, they collapse within seconds. they started cpr right away, faster you begin it, faster your heart gets pumping again, more chance of survival. he is in critical care unit being monitored in critical condition and just a matter of will he become stabilized and no longer need to be sedated in the critical care. >> ashley: you talk about how
2:05 am
critical to get the heart pumping again after going into cardiac arrest, what can happen to the body if left untreated for too long? >> that is a great question, if you let it go too long, lack of blood flow to the brain and internal organs and when you have lack of blood flow, there is lack of oxygenation and the tissues die. the heart tissue will start to die and if it doesn't get nutrientses through the blood flow. fortunately, this is a young, healthy 24 year old, to our knowledge. do we know if there are underlying heart condition, anemia, family history of heart disease, hypertropic cardio m myop

2:07 am
commotocortis and they use a defib rilateor, within two minutes, 80's % survival. they had been conducting cpr for nine minutes, that is far out from the two-minute mark, but he's a young, healthy person, i suspect if it was what we thought it was due from to the blunt trauma, him being young and healthy, i hope and pray near a good prognosis, we don't know the details or what happened. we don't know his medical condition right now. take all the factors into consideration. >> ashley: right, we don't know, it was startling and shocking to see. a lot of questions for a lot of

this, you are such an expert in this field. main thing i want to touch on, the d.n.a., we don't know how it was tracked down, we'll find out in the coming days when he is back in idaho. his d.n.a. wasn't in the system, if that is how investigators were led to kohberger, how they found d.n.a. somewhere else? >> d.n.a. became a forensic investigative tool because all of the d.n.a. matches d.n.a. of people of criminal records go to the fbi in a codis database, like they have a fingerprint database. if d.n.a. is found in a case or sexual assault kit that matches somebody arrested and has d.n.a.
2:14 am
in codis, they can make a hit. if no d.n.a. in codis, if he's never been arrested, for example, d.n.a. without a match. what happened in the past five years, by using other non-codis databases like ansesi database, if there is a marker in the d.n.a. that voluntarily in the databases, not with codis, but voluntarily, they can make a match of somebody similar and may be a sibling or cousin of the d.n.a. in the crime 16. >> todd: fascinating how they did that. >> first was golden state killer

in california, who 40 or 50 years later, 2017, able to make a match and find the guy who did it. >> todd: get your thoughts on this latest information. bryan kohberger has allegedly been threatening guards with another inmate claiming he screamed out, i cut them and i'll cut you, come in here and i'll cut you. so many ways to break this undo. will this admission be used in a court of law or is he setting up insanity defense? >> if they have good d.n.a. evidence, we don't know yet, that will be released in the next couple days when he comes back to i'd, if they have good evidence, we don't know that yet, it is just rumored, insanity defense might be the
2:16 am
way the lawyers will proceed. sounds like the defense lawyers have done a good job, they already stopped the idaho police from tearing down the crime scene to have their own experts come in and see if they agree or disagree with the determination of the fbi and police at the crime scene. insanity defense is very possibilities, especially because of his academic kind of record, so a lot of things insanity defense can a, exonerate somebody, not exonerate them, but take them off the criminal hook, if the insanity defense will keep it from being capital case that is a win for the prosecution if prosecution win for the defense
2:17 am
of prosecution goes with insanity with capital case, not capital, life in prison would be defense win in this case. >> ashley: really quickly, before we let you go, few weeks before the murder he was studying how forensic d.n.a. and other procedures help prosecutors, how far in do you think lawyers are looking into the claims? >> they are going to go very far in. it sounds to me the defense, public defenders can be excellent attorneys and what they have done representing him have been a very professional, done very professionally and there can be a lot of issues ra raised with d.n.a. from the very thing interference impairment of
