woo! >> i don't know what to say. >> just a dynamite performance. ♪ it is 7:00 here in new york city and we start with a fox news alert. if you are just waking up, these images are about last night and damar hamlin, who is now in critical condition after he collapsed on the field in the first quarter of the monday night football game. >> ainsley: he's a safety for the buffalo bills and is he leaving the field there in an ambulance. i think his mom is in the ambulance after a hit during a matchup with the bengals. the nfl postponing that game out of grave concern about his health. >> brian: all right. garrett tenney is live with the latest. garrett? >> good morning, y'all. this was hard to watch. you could tell right away that something was wrong. this was five minutes into the first quarter of the game. damar hamlin playing defense for thes buffalo bills and made what looked to be a routine tackle on the bengals receiver. this wasn't one of those violent vicious collisions. hamlin popped right back up but

a moment later he bobbled and then fell straight backwards. medical personnel rushed onto the field and performed cpr while other players, a lot of them who were visibly shaken shielded hamlin from the crowd and the cameras. an ambulance came onto the field a few minutes later and eventually rushed the 24-year-old to the uc medical center, a level 1 trauma center just a few minutes down the road. the buffalo bills tweeted out damar hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game vs. the bengals. his heartbeat of was restored on the field and he was transferred to the u.k. medical center for further testing and treatment. is he currently sedated and listed in critical condition. the game has been indefinitely postponed. fans gathered outside of the hospital overnight. some of them holding candles and the entire sporting world is offering their thoughts and prayers for damar hamlin, including his teammate quarterback josh allen who tweeted please pray for our brother. and cincinnati receiver tee

higgins whose collision with hamlin led to the medical emergency he tweeted my prayers and thoughts go out to the hamlin family. i'm praying that you pull through, bro. love. we have reached out to the hospital for an update on how hamlin is doing and hoping to hear later on this morning. after this hit last nate. bengals fans, bills fans, folks across the country looking for a way to help found a go fund me that damar hamlin started a couple years ago when he entered of the league for a children's toy drive. the goal for that fundraiser was $2,500. overnight it has raised more than $3 million. back to y'all. >> steve: all right. >> ainsley: thank you. very sweet that people are donating to his charity. it sounded like a christmas charity when you watch the video of him with the children in his hometown and giving them the toys. that he helped raise money for. it was a christmas team. now people even after christmas are giving money to that organization said the needy kids can have some toys to play with. >> brian: watch the coalition, it looks like. we are not going to show it

because we don't think it's appropriate. you might see it throughout the day. you can probably see it online. it doesn't look like anything extraordinary except for the reaction you see a tackle being made and a shoulder going into the chest. of damar. and he goes, gets up right away and then falls fat on his back. so disturbing when players see him. reminiscent for me is when lawrence taylor looked at joe theseman after he snapped his leg. as soon as l.t. saw joe theismann he said he waiving in for medical teams. this was even more severe, obviously. because it turns out later he suffered cardiac arrest and had -- had his heart had to start again. it's presumed to be from the defibrillator on the scene and the great medical team that was there with a great hospital nearby, an ambulance took him out about 30 minutes later. they would cancel the game about an hour later. >> steve: sure. all we know for sure is there was that tackle. did he jump up. but then he pretty much immediately fell back down.

and then they came out and they said it appeared cardiac arrest. we don't know if he had a pre-existing undetected condition. we don't know a lot about what happened. you know, that will come in the coming days. but jim gray, one of the greatest sportscasters of all time was on with the hannity show last night and talked a little bit about how when you are a professional athlete at this level, doctors pretty much know everything going on with your body. here's jim last night. >> this may look like something cardiovascular that may not have had anything to do with the hit. again, none of us knows his medical history. none of us knows what transpired in this moment. and we're going to have to wait and find out just to see just exactly what it is that comes forward with that information. but, these athletes are in such, such fine shape and they are usually tested and retested and, you know, all of their vital signs and all of their, you

know, look, the chemistry of these guys is very, very well-known. you don't get out on the field if you are just not in good shape. if there is something that is wrong with you, it would have been detected through all of these physicals. it's very, very rare where somebody has some type of condition that has not turned up by the time they have been in the national football league for three years. and, so, if he had something that was -- that nobody knew he had that was undetected by the medical community, then, you know, that will come to light as well. >> steve: jim is absolutely right. and, in fact, it's not just with the annual physicals, my cardiologist here in new york is also a cardiologist for one of the national teams, i'm not going to say which one, but they check them out of at tryouts. they look at their medical history at combines and things like that so they know from the get-go what kind of shape somebody is in. and if they have a pre-existing condition and if that would impact their performance. >> ainsley: we heard the phrase i heard you using it a lot last

washington. republicans are set to regain control of the house of representatives. it will mark the end of one party rule in this town. but you guys are right. the big question today is who is going to be the speaker of the house going forward? california congressman kevin mccarthy, he is in the fight for his political life. he has long campaigned for the speaker's job. and he's doing all he can to shore up support ahead o roll cl vote this afternoon. >> speaker tomorrow. >> i think we're going to have a good day tomorrow. >> as chad pergram likes to say it all comes down to the math. mccarthy can only afford to lose four votes in the caucus without the speakerrens race going to a second ballot. the number shooting for is 21. depending on whether or not people may vote present the number may change. here's why it's an uphill battle. at least 14 members elect have doubts or will not support mccarthy in the speaker's race today. he has been meeting with critics but unclear at this point if those meetings are going to do anything to change people's mind at the 11th hour.

apprehend the suspect wanted for a probation violation. the gunman then reportedly stole a car before crashing into a housing development outside of pittsburgh. hours later, officers located the suspect who was killed in a shootout. justin mcintyre became chief of the breaken ridge police department in 2018. his brothers and sisters in blue say he lived there to serve others. mcintyre was just 46 years old. now to a fox weather alert. tornado reports in the south begin what is expected to be a multi-day severe weather outbreak. two twisters reported in louisiana where 14,000 people are still without power. meanwhile in arkansas, powerful winds devastated this high school campus just west of little rock. and a major system is expected to bring heavy snow and ice to the northern plains and upper midwest this week. and nevada animal shelter is looking for a final destination for these three kittens. they're named delta, spirit and frontier. the nonprofit tweeted it changed the name of one of the kittens

>> steve: all right. more news now. the suspect accused murdering four university of idaho students not expected to fight extradition to idaho from pennsylvania. alexis adams joins us with the latest. >> this morning we are out in front of that court hours. we are expecting to cease brian kohberger first time in pennsylvania. that's where he will be later this afternoon around 3:00. that's the first time we are seeing him since investigators say he killed those four university of idaho students a few months ago. although police tell me they have quite a lot of evidence against this guy, steve, his client, his attorney, rather is saying that his client is looking forward to being exonerated. this is his mugshot from pennsylvania he we got in few

days ago when he was arrested. the 28-year-old is expected to rave his extradition today and then be taken by u.s. marshals back to moscow idaho returning to the city where police say he stabbed these four university of idaho students to death inside of heir off campus home back in november. then detectives say he drove off from the scene. kohberger was a student at washington state. that's only about a 10 minute drive from crime scene. he was studying very hard to get his ph.d. in criminal justice and criminallology. after he committed this murder he went right back to class. kohberger living in the area for weeks before police say he drove that white hyundai elantra to pennsylvania for christmas break. according to officials he was with his dad during that cross-country road trip. they were pulled over at least two times in indiana saying traffic stops back to back. once for speeding and another one for following a car too closely. indiana state police tell me there were no citations given in those two cases. the victims' families have been waiting for him to be in court

since day one. >> i want this guy to get -- whoever this person that was responsible for this, i want him to be sick of seeing us and sick of knowing that these people won't let it go. our next mission is really to find justice. >> and, steve, there has been so many questions about how investigators were able to track kohberger down because had it will be so many weeks they had been closely watching him according to sources many i'm told this morning genology website at the center of all of this. when kohberger's family members submitted to 24 and me or ancestry site to try to get information on their d.n.a. and genealogy and they used that information to track kohberger down. steve? >> steve: that is amazing. all right. thank you very much, alexis. nancy grace joins us right now. she has been following the case since the beginning. that's fascinating because he, mr. kohberger, did not submit to being swabbed or giving d.n.a. but, nancy, it sounds like the, from what i have heard, according to various press sources it sounds like they went through the criminal d.n.a. data

base. they didn't have a hit. but they went through the publicly available things like 23 and me or ancestry or whatever and apparently a family member did and so that was the d.n.a. they found at the crime scene. >> absolutely. this relative apparently had not only submitted their d.n.a. to find out their ancestry but it put it out there publicly i guess to find long lost relatives and that may be how cops connect to him. not him necessarily but someone related to him and then they find wow, who is related to him in this area? then they find out he is driving a white elantra and that was a nail in the coffin. so far. but i believe, as do you. that there will be significant data from mobile phone towers. not just geo fencing that you and i talked about way back when as what the cops should do. but i believe they will be able to place kohberger on many different occasions around the

victims as he spied, watched and stalked them. we all looked at that video of them at the food truck. what we didn't see was who was beyond that perimeter. you don't know how far away he was standing and staring at them on many occasions. i believe one of those locations is going to be that parking lot behind their home. >> steve: unbelievable. yeah. i read that there were a number of pings for him adjacent to the suspect or rather to the victims and so that is very curious. but, ultimately, nancy, if he is waiving -- going to waive extradition, he thinks he can beat. this because as we have heard these stories about he has studied cri criminology. he probably thought he outsmarted them aunt edna gave up to d.n.a. that ultimately

potential medical cause dr. marc siegel. we know cardiac arrest on the field. we know that he is in critical condition. i give you those facts and what from what have you already assessed on your own, what do you think? >> good morning, guys. brian, you said it first last night that the most common thing that this would be, the way it looked from the blow to the chest, that was not a severe blow but a moderate blow directly to the chest. the most con thing would be something called commotio cordis which is latin for aggravation of the heart. you don't have to have underlying heart damage or underlying inflammation of the matter to occur it. occurs because it happens at just the right time in the yard yack cycle where you get arrhythmia and starts beating irregularly due to the blood trauma and do you go into ventventricular fibrillation whe your heart is quivering looks like he suddenly drops.

what the good news is the bills are reporting that they restored his heart beat on the field which is tremendous. he had cpr pretty soon and the banambulance was there in five minutes used defibrillator to restore his heart rhythm. how long did he go with less oxygen to the brain and from what these reports are i would say his prognosis is good. you know, he is in critical condition, which is predictable. he's in the hospital. you know, we don't know on ventilator point of protection to reduce any swelling going on in the brain. commotio cordis most likely. >> steve: a lot of people had never heard about that. you know, it essentially knocks your heart out of rhythm. if that is the case. given what you know, what is his prognosis going forward? and, you were talking a little bit about the cpr was performed

during the aftermath and we don't know because he was being covered, we couldn't really see exactly what was going on. we know there were chest compressions would it be standard operating procedures to also breathe air into them? >> yes. correct, steve. cpr is done when you don't feel a pulse then if you use the defibrillator and the pulse comes back and you feel a stronger pulse, the outbeat restored on the field that's when you would stop cpr. i think that this is all good that they were able to bring the heart beat back. you asked about underlying problems. i want everyone out there to understand that what's really elegant about the heart is that its electrically caused to pump. these are electrical signals from the brain to the heart. it's a very elegant cycle. if you interrupt it at exactly the wrong time, because of a blow to the chest, this can happen. it's very common in a younger athlete, it's the second most
