guys, we're digging now to find out whether this might affect the president and first lady's transportation and whether it might impact other white house staff that are flying all around the country today. >> steve: thank you very much. regarding this notams system, excels pilots before they take off where hazards. forest fires and something like that that you got to be worried about. this is the first time in history this notams system has ever failed. it is also the first time since 9/11 that all american airlines have been grounded. according to abc news, apparently, you know, and there's been some speculation about a hacker or something like that. they are reporting that it was a software issue that developed last night and then lead to a cascading series of i.t. failures. that is what has gotten us to where we are right now. >> ainsley: joining is now by phone is a pilot. he is the vice president of the
5:05 am
southwest airlines pilot association. good morning to you, michael. what was your thoughts when you hear the news, all flights grounded until at least 9:00? >> i finally got word of this happening yesterday afternoon. and overnight, it became a much bigger one. i am not surprised the rounding of aircraft this morning. safety is number one in aviation. out of the abundance of caution, not surprised they grounded all flights. something required to read before every flight gives us information about the arrival. if those gains in the area, certain approach system, lighting system out of service. things like that. pretty important for us to know when we get close sometimes it does affect performance numbers. i'm not surprised they cancel that. >> brian: what's going on behind the scenes? they are all waiting for you to
5:06 am
themselves, who is going to be instructing you our best to go? if they decide to scrub a fly but they want to use a pilot to give somebody a place to send you another direction, who is coordinating all the audibles that are being called right now? >> southwest, our network operations control center is controlling all that. so they are discussing -- they look at pilot times. the big issue we have right now is when will pilots timeout? we are good anywhere from 10-14 hours depending on how many legacy flights there are in a day and how many -- what time we started this morning. depending on that will determine how long we can go for the day. that ten hours includes all the flying time. if you have a 5-hour flight to l.a., and we can only hold out for a 4.5 hours or so before we timeout.
5:07 am
starting on the east coast early in the morning. they will be controlling that at the center. >> steve: michael, the meter doesn't start running because there are pilots who have been at the airport for four hours already. the clock on a ten hours doesn't start until the pilot gets in the cockpit and takes off. >> it starts 30 minutes prior to departure is our report time period required to report to the airport. technically are on duty. that is the issue. by they have the limit. as soon as we show up and report for duty is when our clock starts. >> steve: one other question. you are at southwest. famously, you guys have had during the holidays had some major scheduling or computer problems. is this going to impact you adversely in a different way than other airlines? >> to be determined. i hope not.
5:08 am
the knock is on top of this. unfortunately, with all aircraft stopped, we won't have the same problem -- we shouldn't have the same problem having clues displays did not where they are at. we should be okay preemptively taking care of these things. >> steve: a lot of people have flights honestly today but also tomorrow. as is usually trickle into the next day? >> likely, when we that cancellation, it will start. how many seats are broken on those planes going to different places. you can only rebook so many people in a day. how many empty seats there are. i'm certain -- >> brian: are you guys still sort pilots? are you short flight attendants? is the workforce an issue still? >> workforce -- southwest is done a lot of hiring.
5:09 am
we currently have enough pilots to do scheduling on the box. we would like to fly more. they're hiring as many as we c can. restrict it -- our growth is restricted by staff. >> steve: michael, was or if you are talking to us on the phone on television, i'm sure you have been talking to some of your colleagues in the airline industry this morning. what are your friends saying who are professionals in the business about what is happening right now? >> is frustrating. airplanes have redundant systems. at least two of everything. i'm not sure how the system works and it never fails doesn't mean it wouldn't fail. hopefully faa has noticed that they need guidance systems as well. >> steve: this is a good point because the federal government famously has now spent trillions of dollars upgrading infrastructure. all we hear about is how the
5:10 am
government is upgrading the infrastructure. then this one computer system that nobody is ever heard of the notams system, it goes down. we don't know exactly why. probably a software thing. it does not appear that there is any backup. if there is a backup, the back of screwed up. >> steve: yeah. to be clear, i don't really know exactly how they operate that system. if they do have backups. clearly, it is not working if they had one. we have to figure that out. >> ainsley: do you have to have notams the system in order to fly the plane? we talk to someone earlier who said it is pages and pages of information and sometimes you don't have time are pilots don't really pay attention to that information. do you have to have the notams in order to apply? >> it is required to have on board before we take off. you can get it verbally. of course, you know, thousands of flights a day. there's no way everybody can get him verbally and make those phone calls to airports to talk of the towers to find out what's going on with the airport today.
5:11 am
it changes. our a lot of them prioritize the most important ones. where we are going and which approaches they are doing. we can drill down pretty quick on which ones are important or not. we do need to have them. >> steve: michael, and control room, can we put up the flight aware thing that shows the number of airplanes that are currently in the air and need to land? it does show you. can we go to the graphic of the 48 connected states? there we go right there. as we look at the plane is still in the air, michael, there are a lot of planes still up there. most of them are probably fedex flights or ups cargo flights. you share the air space with lot of cargo movers. >> yes, we do. any airplane in the air, you know, because it is not many of them, they can get the current notice no problem verbally. i don't want you to be concerned about that.
5:12 am
>> st>> brian: can you get confirmation on that? >> i do not have any confirmation on that right now. i will probably finding out the information. >> ainsley: how does this affect our country financially? think about all the people missing business meetings or packages trying to get here and there. >> yeah, it's going to be huge -- depending on how long this lasts. it's gonna be a huge impact to everybody especially the airlines. southwest nearly a billion dollar hit last weekend. is it going to help our bottom line or in the airline bottom-line when it's already a pretty tight margin to begin with. >> steve: as a pilot, michael, i'm sure is that people are coming on your airplane over the last week or ten days after the problems at southwest, i'm sure a lot of them have poked their heads in the cockpit and said, are we going to be taking off on time with you guys and stuff
5:13 am
like that? 's to go there's deftly not opportunity that sure for our airline. we have made it clear to everybody trying to tell all our passengers that there is not a southwest problem. this is a faa problem. hopefully they understand it. >> ainsley: how do they normally respond to that? i'm sure the flight attendants come up and talk to you all and say we have someone who is really upset or whenever the story might be. how do people usually react, planes went they have to be somewhere and they are stuck? >> everybody gets frustrated a little bit. but when it is out of our control, generally pretty nice and understand that it is out of our hands. we are doing everything we can to get them to their desti destination. >> steve: we know you guys have been under scrutiny. this is something that is not your fault. the ugly communication is good. at the last thing we heard is everything should go back in 45 minutes. if that is being relayed, then
5:14 am
people are making adjustments checking their app and finding out what is canceled and the weather is not. for the most part, no you're not coordinating this. if people have flights earlier than 9:00 a.m., are they more likely to get first priority or the first likely to be canceled? >> well, that is a great question. the answer is it depends which is not -- it really depends on how long the flight was, what time the pilot started up, how the timing looks. it is variable. >> brian: if i was can ask you something to allow you guys have more freedom, wouldn't it be great to give you more flexibility when it comes to the flight attendants? if you don't have the exact amount, sometimes, if the passengers agree, we're down one, we want to fly but you don't have enough, you can't. do you ever wish for that type of flexibility? >> the flight attendants play an integral part of our safety
5:15 am
aspect of the airline. the number of flight attendants are dictated by how many passengers are on board. every 50 passengers, we need at least one flight attendant. they are not there just as serve drinks and safety briefs. they are really therefore if something bad happens. and we have to do some sort of emergency landing. they will be there to help you guys out of the airplane and the fastest possible manner. i would not be in favor of leaving without the required number of flight attendants. >> steve: they are going to help you off the plane if something goes haywire. i guess, michael, the good news is if you operate a bar at one of the big airports today, you're probably can have a pretty good very busy day. >> it's a busy day in the airport for sure. >> brian: go to the airport with your own bloody mary makes. >> ainsley: you can't get through security with liquid. thank you for all you do. you're getting people home for christmas and weddings and medical treatments.
5:16 am
god bless you. thanks for what you do. i know you are away from your family a lot. >> steve: don't blame southwest. thanks, michael. the white house says there is no evidence of a cyber attack at this point. apparently, it was according to abc news a software problem. >> ainsley: at this fox news alert we've been talking about all morning. this faa is guarding all takeoffs because there was a computer outage. we are live from chicago's o'hare airport and we will be right back. i try to put my arm around any vet that i can, absolutely. at newdayusa that's what we're doing. we put our arm around the veterans. when i think of the veteran out there that needs to refi his home, he may want to purchase, we can help them and provide that financial solution for them and their families. it's a great rewarding feeling. everybody in the company, they have that deference and that respect and that love for the veteran that makes this company so unique.

5:21 am
after a major system-wide outage. >> steve: more than 3500 flights impacted so far. that number is gonna grow throughout the day. >> brian: live at o'hare international airport. how are the attitudes they are the ground? >> surprisingly, i haven't seen a lot of people throwing fits or anything, steve, ainsley, and brian. this is the united terminal by the way. it looks normal on this side. the nonsecured side of the terminal. people are checking and running flights. they are checking their bags and then they are going through the tsa security checkpoints like they normally would. that being said, we know on the other side of the security checkpoints, it is anything but normal as all flights here at o'hare and across the country departures that is have been paused. we just got an update from the faa in just the last few minutes during the commercial break. it is therefore an update of the morning. they say they are making progress in restoring their

notice to air mission system following an overnight outage. departures are resuming. atlanta airport due to air traffic congestion in those areas. we expect departures to resume at other airports at 9:00 eastern. about 40 minutes from now. we also know president biden has been briefed on the system outage this morning. i just spoke to reporters moments ago. here is what he had to say. >> i just misspoke. i don't know what that causes. i was on the phone in los angeles. i will find out. aircraft can land safety but not take off right now. i don't know what the cause is. they expected to take a look and a couple of hours. >> you heard that president theirs say we don't know what the cause of the system outage is. with the white house is saying that there is no evidence of a

cyber attack which is important. but the problem is they don't know what is causing this problem that has grounded all flights across the country. that is a failure of the technology that they use it sounds like. this is on top of issues within the faa and airline systems over the past several weeks. we know what happened with southwest over the holidays that led to several thousand flights being canceled. then just last week in florida, there was an issue with other faa systems that led to flights being delayed and canceled unable to land at florida airport. today, we know that this started overnight. as of around 5:30 eastern this morning, there were about 400 delays into, out of, and within the united states. now according to flight aware, the number is ten times that around 3500 delays in the united states right now, guys. it could be at least 30 minutes until they get planes back up
5:24 am
and running for departures again. and then of course all of the people who have been deleted here this morning and across the country if there flights have been canceled, they might have to get rebooked on other fli flights. the message is only beginning i think it is safe to say. >> steve: you're right about that. thank you very much. the good news there is that the systems, this notams system that talks about hazards is coming up. have apparently rebooted it. it is never broken in the history of the system. what is interesting in grady's report as they have resumed flights at newark and also atlanta. he said because of traffic congestion there's a reason for that. it's one of the biggest hubs in the east for united. they've got all these planes and they can go to the gates because they are congested. the same thing for atlanta. the biggest hub for delta air lines. before they can get more people in, they've got to get people out there that is why they are going to be taken off.

>> brian: let's talk about what's going on with these documents in mexico. >> ainsley: news breaks all over the country that top-secret information was found classified information, pieces of paper. ten of them actually were found in his office. he had this office when i left the vice presidency years ago. he was hired by the university of pennsylvania. he became a professor. they built him this office. they make this office for him in d.c. they are cleaning out the office and found the documents in the box he says either a locked cabinet or closet. as soon as they did, the president said they did what they should have done and they turn them over to the national archives. he is saying, he is surprised that they were there. listen. >> president biden: they realized there were several classified documents in that box. they did what they should have done. they immediately called the archives and immediately called the archives. to turn over to the archives.
5:26 am
i was briefed about this discovery and surprised to learn that there were any government records that were taken there to that office. but i don't know what is in the documents. my lawyers have not suggested i ask what documents they wear. i have turned over the boxes. they have turned over the boxes to the archives. we are cooperating fully, cooperating fully with the review in which i hope will be finished soon. >> brian: hold your ears for a second i will tell you what's in these documents according to reports, they contain at least ten highly classified documents that have topics like iran, the u.k., and ukraine in terms of their content. now you can take your hands off eight years and now your lawyer can tell you. jonathan turley on last night said he can think of a legal reason why joe biden would be recommended not to find out what documents he took. here are democrats reactions trying to deflect.
5:27 am
>> d.o.t. is reviewing classified documents that are found -- >> they said they found them there. >> do you think that poses a national security threat? >> no. >> why not? >> i don't think so. >> they were not accessible. that is why appropriate process was followed. this is not mar-a-lago. this is not a president refusing a subpoena. i don't think it compares at a all. >> here's the thing good a lot of republicans are talking about the hypocrisy of donald trump holding top-secret stuff was a threat to national security, wasn't this the same thing? >> ainsley: do you think nancy would've put down the cookie? a little slack. >> steve: why does this go from here? the guy who the justice department put in charge of investigating the joe biden thing that happened before the midterms but we are just running out. john laos, he has in his report to the home office of the

delays that we are seeing it across the board. came out a good half hour after united went out and said that they are going to delay their flights. what is being put out is interesting from this speed in light of the fact that they are working on this computer glitch last night between 10:00 and 11:00 when it transpired. they have had all night. you get the feeling that they were trying to get it done before all of this happen. and now all of this is happ happening. >> steve: a glitch as they said. hank flynn live in philly. thank you very much. joining us once again, it is interesting when it first tab in, we suggested perhaps it is a slimy thing. a hack or something like out for the white house has come out and said it was not cyber. we just ran a cell right with the president. he says we don't know what it is. >> i think the lines of communication are a little muddled right now between all of the different agencies. let's just stick with this faa.

pete buttigieg tweeted if he is on at that is comforting. i think the biggest story right now is what is going to happen today at the nation's airports. this is going to throttle the nation's airports for the day. when you have one delay, it is a cascading effect. we talk about that earlier. >> ainsley: look at this couple. thankfully they decided to fly down a day before the cruise leaves. hopefully they will get down there today. in these situations i bet you see rentacar soaring. people like them rent a car and just try to drive to florida. >> rental cars sold out during the holiday disaster with all the weather that happened across the country. it is likely -- that may happen again today. you mentioned -- i'm glad you brought that up. we are talking about the inbound aircraft that have to come in. airports can only get to handle some of the aircraft on the ground. there's only so much tarmac space or space at the gates. they've got to get those planes in and out. >> steve: somebody is in their way.
