real for biden. i'm harris faulkner and you are in "the faulkner focus." we begin with the nation's current tab. more than $31 trillion. the treasury department already said it is prepared to take extraordinary measures before our ability to borrow runs out. but even treasury can only help for so long. it is a number that is so huge that we only have until probably june until we default unless congress takes action. in the past, congress has simply raised the debt ceiling to keep us borrowing. that's what democrats want. again republicans are arguing for every buck we spend on paying the interest on debt at this point, we should find places in the federal government and all of our spending to cut. the president lashing out. >> president biden: they will talk about big spending democrats again.
8:02 am
guess what? i reduced the deficit last year $350 billion. hear me. these guys fiscally -- fiscally demented, i think. they don't quite get it. >> harris: fox business anchor larry kudlow points out there are holes in biden's debt reduction story. >> he always brags the deficit came down but he neglects to mention that almost every nickel of that came from ending various covid emergency spending programs. his spending agenda in the past two years has come to roughly $6 trillion. not one droplet of fiscal restraint on his part. hopefully the era of republican senate compliance with biden's big government socialism has come to an end with the new g.o.p. house. >> harris: major player in the g.o.p. led house judiciary
8:03 am
committee chairman jim jordan is in "focus." first to fox business correspondent hillary vaughn live on capitol hill. >> good morning, harris. president biden calling toying with the debt limit fiscally dem demented. republicans say you can't keep raising the money. they want to put president biden on a budget. >> this president has spent more money than any country in the history of the world has spent in just two years. why we have a $32 trillion national debt. record high inflation because they are printing more money than ever before. if anybody is fiscally demented it is joe biden and it's shameful. >> on thursday the u.s. debt is expected to hit its limit of what is allowed. no more borrowing more money to pay our bills. it is not just spending that's adding to the tab. it is the interest we're paying off as well because we're spending money we don't have. the latest estimate from the
8:04 am
congressional budget office says the u.s. will spend $4 hundred billion in interest payments alone on this debt. that's $3 thousand for every american household. >> i know that kevin mccarthy after his 15th vote for speaker had agreed he would not raise the debt ceiling unless he extracts spending cuts. but, you know, if we don't raise the debt ceiling we go into default. only one default is enough to nuke the economy. we can't have 15 defaults mirroring the 15 speaker votes for him to do what's right. >> janet yellen says once they hit the limit they'll move money around to cover our bills. that will only buy them five months of time. she is expecting extraordinary measures will run out in june. republicans think they can use that time to force washington to go on a financial diet, harris.
8:05 am
>> harris: has that ever worked? hillary, thank you so much. when it comes to spending those taxpayer dollars, our money, one republican says the entire government is on the hook. >> spending problem. not a revenue table. put everything on the table. to reach the debt limit it forces us to prioritize our spending. every area of government needs to be accountable. nothing should be immune to that. >> harris: a new op-ed entitled the hard reality of a debt ceiling showdown. the crisis is a test for republicans and whether they stand strong against reckless spending and asks do house pub gangs have a strategy to keep them unified when the political clamor of default moves? jim jordan of ohio and now the committee chairman of the house judiciary. great to see you today. first of all, talk to me about that inner divide over the topic
8:06 am
among republicans and what you foresee ahead. how strong can you stand together? >> we have record spending, record inflation, record debt. the democrats say we don't want to change any behavior or do anything. i don't understand it. no common sense there. the white house said we will not negotiate with house republicans. really? how about some simple things like if you increase the borrowing authority, add more debt to the nation's bottom line here, why not at least have a budget that you have to put in place? the democrats haven't passed a budget in the last several congress? why not? we'll borrow more money we don't have and how to prioritize the spending of that money. they don't do that. i don't get this idea that we can't negotiator do anything different other than borrow and spend more money. that's not going to work as you pointed out when we're approaching $5 hundred billion
8:07 am
in debt service payments and interest payments on the $32 trillion debt. >> harris: my question was about staying unified because democrats would love to see some sort of, you know, discussion about it across the aisle. real quickly because i want to get to this. some of the world's top economists with a grim outlook. 81% of those are saying a global recession is likely or very likely. the price hike pain for americans is unrelenting no matter what the president says. i don't know that he shops. december moody's report says we're paying an average of $72 more for groceries every month compared with this time last year. that's more than $860 annually. >> look, when you have record spending as we talked about and you drive up the cost of energy, it doesn't take a genius to figure out you'll have record inflation, exactly the situation we're in. it is all driven by the ridiculous policies from the left.
8:08 am
when we get to the debt ceiling issue and the appropriations process and government funding we want to try to change the equation to help american fame lalls who have been saddled with this 41-year high inflation rate. that should be what we focus on versus we can't work with you or change anything and borrow more money on the debt ceiling issue. it makes no sense. let's do common sense things. do the appropriation process, all 12 appropriation bills in 20 some years and also when we get to this -- make the democrats put forward a budget and tell the american people here is what we'll spend. we put forward a budget from the house republicans. hopefully the democrats in the senate will do the same thing. >> harris: it is so fascinating what you are calling for is simple and it is akin to transparency. once the american people are really told the truth, all of those lawmakers on both sides of the aisle but particularly on the left will hear from their constituents and part of how you fight this battle, i would imagine as well.
8:09 am
>> that's how american government is supposed to work. put it out there. let's have a national debate. we should make the democrats put forth a budget if you increase the debt ceiling. we can have the debate. >> harris: two house committees now investigating the classified document found in president biden's possession in multiple locations. there could be others. there is a special counsel probing all this as well. a lot of people looking at it. the situation is sparking national security concerns especially the documents that were in his wilmington, delaware home. some had markings on them like top secret. peter doocy shared this photograph from his archives that shows the now president's home which now even -- not even a lick of security around it and the picture is from 2019. the white house tore into the probes and defended the president this way. house republicans have no credibility.
8:10 am
demands should be met with skepticism and admit they don't care about the underlying classified material. president biden is doing the right thing and cooperating fully with the thorough review. house republicans with paying politics and shamelessly hypocritical. chairman? >> this is not about politicizing anything. it is about the double standard that is so evident to the american people. there were one set of rules for secretary clinton and joe biden and different for president trump. anyone with common sense can see it as well. i point to this. i still remember when i questioned secretary clinton in the benghazi hearings about her 60,000 emails. i asked her a question. madam secretary, we don't want to see the personal emails. this is america. you have privacy rights but we don't trust you and your lawyers to turn over to the committee what the american people are entitled to see. how about we let a neutral third party like a retired federal
8:11 am
judge examine the emails and they'll decide. they couldn't do that. her lawyers had to decide. she destroyed 30,000 of those 60,000 emails. why do this he get to operate that way versus how president trump was treated? we want the equal application of the law and transparency. we talked about this in the debt ceiling debate. in november they find classified documents at the biden center. december they find them in his home in the garage. we learn about it january 9th but only learned -- the white house only tells us about the ones at the biden center. why not tell us about the ones in the garage when they knew it at the time? be transparent with the american people and treat everyone the same. that's all we're asking for in this situation. >> harris: one of the questions i've been asking is about president obama. the documents that are classified, those in question at several locations now that were in the possession of vice president biden at the time, those were under the obama
8:12 am
presidency. is he part of the investigation? how do you see him being pulled into this? he actually could have declassified them as vice president my reading is that biden cannot. >> there is all kinds of important questions. that's a great one. has president obama declassified those documents? did he declassify them before joe biden took them with him? i don't know. i think there is some fundamental questions. why were they looking in the first place? what prompted them to go look? what did the justice department -- what was their two-month investigation? we know the special counsel was appointed. when he concludes it before they found some of the batches. the third batch. what was that? why did the white house counsel's office accompany -- why did he accompany the d.o.j. lawyers to the biden residence? i have never seen that happen rick either.
8:13 am
there are all kinds of questions the american people have about this >> harris: when you have the chairman of judiciary i have a question for you. you know the law so well. could this politically be a situation where after november 3rd or four before the election biden had to have known. his team had to have known. you couldn't keep the lid on it forever. d.c. leaks like a sieve. you have the u penn biden center in washington, d.c. sooner or later we'll find out about them. do you sick the doj on them to clear it and get it off your plate? your thoughts quick. >> i do not know why they discovered this and why was the lawyers packing boxes? there are all kinds of questions. i think the american people are entitled to the answers to those questions particularly in light of what happened 91 days before the mid-term election when president trump's home was
8:14 am
raided. that was information the country had all kinds of access to but not this. i think all those questions and mr. comer and our committee and others, intel committee are trying to get answers for the american people. >> harris: what you point out is so important. we shouldn't gloss over the optics. it is politics. by december 20th they knew they had a big steaming pile of pooh. i didn't see anybody with cameras or anything. is there some for posterity? chairman, i could go on forever. pleasure to have you in "focus" today. thank you. >> take care. >> harris: another university going wild for woke. it's training facility or faculty on topics like white fatigue. the backlash coming fast and furious. also lawmakers in d.c. are pushing to weaken penalties for violent crimes. many are saying their priorities are really wrong. >> why are we not looking out
8:15 am
for the rights of law-abiding citizens? it seems we're forever looking out for the rights of criminals. >> harris: even the city's democratic mayor is against the move as her city is seeing more than its fair share of crime, she says. pete hegseth in "focus" next. >> tech: cracked windshield? make it easy and schedule with safelite, because you can track us and see exactly when we'll be there. >> woman: i have a few more minutes. let's go! >> tech vo: that's service that fits your schedule. go to safelite.com. >> singers: ♪ safelite repair, safelite replace. ♪ when you really need to sleep. you reach for the really good stuff. zzzquil ultra helps you sleep better and longer when you need it most. its non-habit forming and powered by the makers of nyquil.
