12:00 pm
originally in the asian community of monterey park, not only occupied by asian residents, but heavily, uh, very heavy population of asian residents there, so we'll continue to piece together of this horrible, horrible turn of events. but right now, eric baw gillian and bill in washington. gillian: fox news alert, we're awaiting an update out of the l.a. county sheriff's department. overnight there a gunman opened pyre inside a ballroom dance club as people were gathered to celebrate the chinese lunar new year. ten people died, at least ten others injured and transported to local hospitals. this was a mass shooting that that took place in monterey park, california, overnight. welcome to "fox news live," i'm gillian turner. bill: and i'm bill melugin. the suspect still at large, he is described as an asian male.
12:01 pm
if we can pull up this live shot, you can see the white van which is connected to the suspect, believed to be connect to the suspect, being surrounded by law enforcement in torrance the, california. that is just south to have the los angeles area. has the torrance police department with what looks to be two the bearcats surrounding that white cargo van which, again, is believed to be involved with the suspect behind this mass shooting. monterey park, where the shooting happened, is about 30-45 minutes away from scene you're looking at right now. so at some point, the suspect ended up here in torrance, and as you can see from the posture of the officers and the scene right there, it does not appear to be very active. those s.w.a.t. officers have their backs turned to the vehicle. we don't know the status of anybody inside that van, but i think it's fair to say they're not per e steveing any active threat at that scene right now. gillian: sheriff robert luna said earlier morning that last night's shooting was one of the county's most heinous cases in
12:02 pm
history. law enforcement is now looking into whether the suspect who we have reported, as christina coleman has reported, police there believe is connected to that white vehicle, looking at whether he is connected to another incident in alhambra about 18 minutes after. monterey park. right now this hour, this moment, the list is a lot long longer what we don't know. we don't know where the suspect is, whether he's on the scene or not, whether he's alive, dead or injured, and we don't know whether fire was exchanged on scene at parking lot that we're looking at. bill: and we're, hopefully, going to get some of those questions cleared up as we're waiting for the l.a. county sheriff's department to get started. if we can pull up the photo of the suspect in this mass shooting, this is something l.a.
12:03 pm
county sheriff's department just put out earlier this afternoon. this is the guy they are looking for. he's described as a 5-10, 150-pound asian male. hay actually have a pretty good look at his face. you can see that was from, appears to be some sort of a surveillance camera there. gun reportedly was recovered. going back to what we mow, this happened at 10:30 p.m. last night monterey park, lunar if new year eve. he apparently goes into a dance studio, opens fire. ten people killed, another ten people injured. again, that is the guy they are looking for. it is believed the white cargo van associated with him is the one surrounded in that torrance parking lot, and for more we're going to bring in los angeles-based martial correspondent for fox news christina coleman. i know we're waiting for that press presser any second now. what is the latest that you're hearing out will? >> reporter: hi, bill, i thought it was great that you noted at the scene there in torrance, it
12:04 pm
doesn't a appear to be an active scene with some of those officers, deputies with their backs turned. that kind of leads me to believe that maybe this is something where heir trying to possibly clear out this scene. we have to wait and see. again, a lot of moving parts here. but i wanted to note we're just hearing from our source that bomb squad is on scene will in torrance to assist with clearing the vehicle, that white van that witnesses say hay noticed at a dance hall near the dance hall where that mass shooting occurred. so that suspect vehicle apparently there in torrance. there is a bomb squad, they're on scene to assist with clearing that vehicle. i'm told this is a precautionary measure by law enforcement. now again, also notable that we have the description of suspect. we got that quickly. and as you mentioned also, a very clear, a kind of clear picture of the suspect's face. you take a look around here, i'm here, you know, just a block away from where that mass
12:05 pm
shooting look place. there's lots of businesses, so you have to imagine that there was lots of security cameras, possibly lots of witnesses, thousands of people were out in this area yesterday to celebrate the new year's eve, the hue far new year. so -- lunar. so there were a lot of eyes on this area. so that is definitely going to help out investigators. i talked with one of witnesses around here, one of the witnesses to emergency responders taking those victims away, and he says a lot of people around here were very terrified this morning because the killer was still on the loose. so again, we're waiting for that press conference to happen. it'll be very helpful if he can release more details on this. again, we know heir in the very preliminary stages of this investigation, but i think a lot of people want to know is why would someone attack these innocent individuals? this is such a happy time, so many people out here celebrating the community here. you have a lot of older people who are walking around here with their kids, heir out here --
12:06 pm
they're out here celebrates -- celebrating, so why would someone want to go after these people? just so vulnerable. ten victims killed and ten, at least ten victims injured. hair conditions range from -- their conditions range from stable to critical. hopefully, their conditions do not worsen. i'm sure and we all know that, or you know, we have that huge police presence around here trying to figure out what happened and, of course, the medical staff working diligently to try and save the lives of those brutally injured in this devastating attack. bill? bill: thank you. i'm texting with one of our l.a. based producers who's on scene in torrance, alexandria hernandez reporting that the bomb squad is on scene, surrounding that vehicle simply as a precautionary measure to help local police with clearing that vehicle. again, we don't know what is or isn't happening inside that vehicle, but the bomb squad is going to be on scene there to help clear that vehicle. christina, i want to touch on
12:07 pm
something i believe i heard you mention in one of your earlier live shots. obviously, they've been looking for this guy since last night. did i hear you correctly that that before we got to this point here where van is pulled over in this strip mall, this initially started as a traffic stop? is that that correct? >> reporter: yeah. our source, well, the producer that you had just mentioned, you know, we're hearing, yeah, that this suspect or this vehicle was pulled over as a traffic stop. apparently, things have escalated. there's been reports of shots being fired. so, again, very concerning, and we do not know the condition of whoever was many that vehicle or if that the person is, in fact, the suspect. we coknow that a white van has been identified as a suspect vehicle. so we're, again, waiting for clarification, waiting for confirmation of what happened in that case. bill? gillian: christina, this is gillian here in d.c. with bill.
12:08 pm
local law enforcement there, we know, is looking into a separate incident in alhambra and trying to find out whether this suspect is connected to that incidentals. incident. also took place in some kind of dance studio hall will. what are you hearing from sources on the ground? >> reporter: we're hearing about 20 minutes after the mass shooting that happened at initial dance hall that a suspect, witnesses say a suspect went into that dance hall that you just mentioned about 2 miles north of here and that, apparently, some individuals will wrestled a firearm -- there wrestled a firearm. that's what witnesses are saying. they also say that that suspect took off in a white van. so that is how some people are connecting the dots on those two situations. mass shooting happened at the dance hall here, about 20 the minutes later another incident, a man wrestled to the ground where they take the firearm away from him. that individual gets in a white van and takes off.
12:09 pm
police, law enforcement here, everybody working together to try and identify that the suspect vehicle. hen we hear this morning that a white van is stopped in nearby torrance and that it is surrounded by law enforcement. some kind of shootout takes place, and now apparently we're hearing from our sources that a bomb squad will be the there to help clear out the scene. again, we do not know officially if all of those, if all of those scenes, those incidents are connected, but the way that it's being laid out, hopefully, or we'll get some clarification in this upcoming press conference. gillian: very quick follow-up, christina. are you hearing anything about the scene in alhambra after the suspect there fled this in a white vansome do you know if anybody was hurtsome. >> reporter: i have not heard yet on possible injuries in that the, you know? if it is the case that they were able to wrestle with him and get this gun away, hank goodness for that the because people have already lost hair lives last night in this devastating and
12:10 pm
senseless crime. so, again, waiting for information on exactly what happened there. again, this is a very busy area, lots of businesses here. i imagine there's lots of security cameras, so hopefully they'll be able to piece this together. gillian? gillian: christa teen that, stay with us for just a moment, stand by. bill's going to bring in -- bill: thank you. we want to go ahead and bring in attorney brian claypool for a little more insight on this. brian with, can you hear me? >> yeahings or bill, i'm here. bill: okay, perfect. i assume you're looking at the same live pictures we're looking at right now. one of the things i've noticed being a street reporter for many years now including in the l.a. market is the posture of those officers, those deputies on scene, the s.w.a.t. team there. they've got their backs turned to that white van. they're not taking an active posture in terms of my potential danger coming to that vehicle. what are you noticing about crime scene, and what does it say to you? >> yeah, bill, mice to be back with you. just to let your viewers know, i live about 15 minutes from
12:11 pm
monterey park, not far from will. it's a very quaint community, about 60,000 folks, 65% asian, about 25% hispanic. so this is a really nice part of l.a., a lot of businesses so people had their guard down celebrating. one hinge i do want to mention is we've now learned lu your reporting that -- through your reporting that if this is the guy that did the killing, he had several guns, right? because they apprehended the gun at the shooting, then you had the incident in alhambra after where they disarmed him. then if he's in that white van having killed himself, then that's a third gun that he had. but getting back to your question, i mean, it looks like he probably has killed himself in the van because of the posture of the police officers. they don't look like incredibly alarmed, like they're confronting somebody that really poses a risk to them. that said, bill, i will tell you having been a survivor of las vegas shooting, i spent the last
12:12 pm
five plus years trying to figure out how we can prevent mass shootings, and if that guy in that why not van is the killer, we're going to hen have to dissect his background, right? how did he get access to multiple guns, right? what is his mental health background, does he have a prior criminal record. let's look into that, find out if he has. and there's the something in his record that could have been a red flag to try to have prevented this from happening. gillian: brian, this is gillian. at what point do investigators start considering possible mote motive -- motives for the single mass shooting or potentially attempted other incident if nearby in alhambra? >> yeah, great question. so i have two views on that. my visceral reaction knowing the monterey park area, knowing alhambra area, predominantly asian, i initially thought has got to be a hate crime, racially
12:13 pm
motivated. hen i learned that the killer is of asian descent. then i learned that he went to another dance hall. so it is possible that this killer has a personal connection to either one or more of dance halls and that there is some kind of personal vendetta that might have existed that led him to do such a heinous crime. that said though, i mean, guy knew, or gillian, that this was the lunar new year celebration. he knew there were thousands of people out celebrating. he knew that most of the people celebrating in monterey park were asian. so law enforcement really has to do a deep dive to find if out whether this was a hate crime. bill: and, brian, you're a local, as you mentioned. this active scene where they've surrounded this white cargo vanishing this is directly across the street very close to del amo mall in torrance which is a very popular area. i want to ask you about what
12:14 pm
we're expecting to hear in this upcoming press conference. the l.a. county sheriff's department is running about 30 minutes late now, they initially said about 2:45 local time. obviously, with this breaking news situation, we often times see press conferences get extended as detectives have to confirm certain information before they put it out to the media. what are you hoping to learn in this press conference? what i'm hoping to learn personal wily is, is the suspect alive or dead inside that vehicle, is he even inside that vehicle? if obviously, i don't think we're going to hear anything about potential motive just yet, but quinn what we've been looking at with kind of the tone around that vehicle, are you expecting to get an update that in the threat who they've considered in their release armed and dangers, keep an eye out for this guy, that this threat right now is essentially neutralized? >> yeah, bill. so i think that the press conference has been delayed a bit because law enforcement at the scene in torrance is contemplating going in now to apprehend the suspect, to do
12:15 pm
what you said, to validate that he killed himself. i think that's what people want to find out, two things, is -- the is driver of that white van dead or alive, right? number one. number two, if he is dead, then there's got to be a gun inside there, or right? who's that registered to? you've got the gun from the shooting. he probably has some identification on him, driver's license. you can then take his dna and match that that dna, hopefully, with the dna on the gun that was seized at ballroom where the mass shooting happened. so these are some of things we want our sheriff many l.a. county to talk about -- in l.a. county to talk about so that that people mt. community can have some sense of community and a more calm feeling that this really is guy that did it. bill: yeah. and it's pretty obvious hay got a pretty quick indication of who this guy might be given that photo that they the put out. it looks like they got some images very quickly, able to put
12:16 pm
his face out to the public clearly. they were able to track down that van quickly must have to identify it and reportedly try to pull it over for a traffic stop. they were able to do that -- the shooting happened at 10:30 last night, that's some pretty fast police work, maybe 14 hours. they were able to, apparently, find guy and the van connected to it. as we wait for this press conference to start, you know, you mentioned you survived that las vegas shooting. already ten survivors of this monterey park shooting who are injured in the hospital right now. take us into what that experience is like when you're just out trying to have a good night, a good time, and all of a sudden you hear the boom, boom, boom of gunshots going off. >> yeah, bill, it's -- it's an emotional experience for me as well waking up and learning about this. i will tell you it's the worst experience on planet because you're at an event.
12:17 pm
i was at a country western concert. my guard's down. i'm just trying to have fun and relax and enjoy my life. so when i hear happening again, i can be in the shoes of the folks that are in there. because they're just celebrating life, bill. and they're in there and they're not expecting this. and that was the hardest part about being in a mass shooting, is feeling of just utter helplessness. you have nowhere to go. and that's what i still experience in my life. i want people to know five plus years after shooting, i still experience that helplessness whenever i'm in a crowded place or when i'm at a big social event. these people had nowhere to go. they don't know where to go, their life is flashing in front of them, bill. and what i was experiencing is what -- i'm a single power of a daughter. i'm sure a lot of people in this shooting are feeling that. am i going to see my loved one
12:18 pm
again, am i going to see my daughter again, my son again? this is not how i want to die. we live in the united states. i don't want to be dying at a ballroom celebrating the lunar new year because of a killer that's just shooting and killing. so it's the most horrifying thing that somebody could ever experience. the way i describe the canned it, bill, i may have even talked to you after the vegas shooting, is you lose part of your soul. so for the people who died, the families have to go through that grief. for those who survived, part of your soul's gone because you experienced something like that. and my hope through this, i'll share with you, is after another mass shooting like, my hope is, is that we can look back at these shootings and hen try to learn again, right, how we can prevent the background of this shooter again, could we have prevented it? i mentioned on an earlier segment why not at every big social event have dogs that can
12:19 pm
sniff ammunition, bill, for example, a mile away? so, you know, even in the darkest moments like this, we have got to rally as a country and try to come up with ways, again, to prevent this. because this is life changing not only for people there, bill, the community, you guys reporting, first responders. this is going to be seared in your soul for the rest of your life, rest assured. gillian: brian, thanks for joining us and sharing all of that. if you'd be so good as to stand by, i want to take a moment to reset for our viewers. you're looking live at a picture now of an active situation in torrance, california. police there have surrounded a white van in a parking lot. police have told us, police sources have told the fox news if they believe that the suspect in last night's shooting many monterey park is connected to that vehicle. at this hour we don't know whether the suspect is or is not inside that vehicle, we don't know whether the suspect is alive, we don't know whether that suspect is connected to a separate cement in nearby
12:20 pm
alhambra -- incident. i want to go ahead and wring in chris -- bring in christina coleman who's on the ground in monterey park for some information that's breaking. christina, we just had up there photos that were released about an hour ago of suspect. what can you tell us about him? >> reporter: right. yeah, so the l.a. county sheriff's office, hay released a bulletin with a suspect description, not sure if you guys can see that photo, if we can pull that up. they described him as an asian male, hay described him, they say he's about 5-10, maybe 150 pounds. so just -- and they have a pretty clear image of the suspect's face. and, again, i can imagine that would not be hard to get considering there are so many businesses around here and there's just so many cameras. i'm looking at some just from our live shot location. we have four different you are surveillance cameras around here just pointing in this intersection in general which, of course, is blocked off for
12:21 pm
the crime scene. now, again, we are also hearing multiple reports circling that this could be domestic related, that this could be some kind of domestic-related incident. the sheriff was not able to confirm it, but, of course, that would be very, very key for investigators and for a lot of people around here who want answers. again, so last night you had ten people who were killed, ten victims who were injured. their conditions range from stable to critical. he were taken to area hospitals for treatment. we've -- i've spoken with witnesses who watched as emergency crews responded. they say it was just heartbreaking. they're hoping for the quick and swift recovery of some of those victims as police investigate in the. shortly after 10:00 last night that suspect, they say, went into a a ball dance hall just located behind these buildings here and went in there and
12:22 pm
opened fire. and, again, ine injured and killed those victims. and then you have witnesses say they respondented a man at a dance hall nearby, just about 20 minutes later, and that individuals were able to wrestle a firearm away from that person. those witnesses say that the person, that suspect then got into a white van and sped off. so then and now this morning the new development as we've been mentioning the latest where you have that that white van, a white van many torrance that was pulled over. our sources telling fox news that it was pulled over initially for a traffic stop. law enforcement ended up surrounding that vehicle. we're told that shots were fired. we do not know condition of whoever was mt. vehicle at that time -- in the vehicle at that time. we are waiting for more information on that. of course, we have definitely heard things. we are waiting for this next press conference to hear what law enforcement has to say about that, if that can give us in any
12:23 pm
clues. but, certainly, you can see how people are trying or at least seeing how they could connect dots between the mass shooting that happened around 10:30 last night, the person who was at a nearby dance hall who had a gun wrestled away from him according to witnesses. the white van that a this person had jumped in and now this white van that is stopped in torrance that crews are working to clear. again, sources telling us that the bomb squad thereby as a precautionary measure. has very latest here on this investigation. back to you. bill: christina, thank you. we'll, of course, have you stand by as we wait for that that l. l.a. sheriff's press conference, it's supposed to start pretty much my minute now, and we're expecting a whole lot more details. in the meantime, we want to bring in former fbi national joint terrorism task force member as well as retired calculate for the nuttily police department, steve rogers. steve, i'm assuming you're looking at these live images as well. you've got a lot of experience
12:24 pm
in department. what does that active scene in terms of the officers' posture? to me, it does not look like they consider an active threat inside of that white van. what's your belief? >> well, at the moment, no. but we're not if absolutely sure until they actually have their eyes on the individual. the other issue is they have to be very, very careful before they enter that van because, as it was said in an earlier report, you never know if there's a bomb in that van or something will the that could hurt the police. but i can tell you this, that at moment police, no doubt, are preparing search warrants if this individual has passed away and they can identify him, they're preparing search warrants for that person's home, any vehicles, any properties he owns because in those establishments may be a lot of clues as to why person did what hay did and they had planned to commit my other acts which would lead you to motive. bill: and how soon will the atf be able to kept a trace on these
12:25 pm
firearms? i understand in mass shooting incidents like this the at or p can coan urgent trace, basically a fast-tracked trace. how quickly are we talking in terms of finding out information about these firearms they've recovered? >> oh, i believe within hours. they're good at what hay do. they're going to be able to track weapons immediately. they'll have the conclusion of the tracing of this particular weapon within hours. gillian: this is gillian, steve. tell us about community there in torrance. if police do have this suspect surrounded or they have him in custody, are e hay safesome -- are they safe? >> i believe they are at this point because, one, there is a suspect who is now in the hands of police whether dead or alive, that's number one. number two, if, in fact, there was a domestic case, well, that's a lot of relief to a lot of people that this individual just didn't randomly go in and start shooting people couple which would lead to motive.
12:26 pm
i believe nerves are a lot calmer because the individual is now in custody, but understanding what the motive was will be bringing much relief to to that community. gillian: we don't know the motive yet, but we do know from the l.a. county sheriffs that of victims who died on scene last night, five were male, five were female, police also said hay believe that all of them are of asian-american descent. what, if anything, can you read into that? >> well, the suspect, i understand, was of asian-american descent. it kind of causes me to lean away from a bias crime, a hate crime. however, we never moaa goes on through a person's mind no matter who they are, where they're from. i believe from the beginning that this individual may have some connection to the targets, may have some bone ofen contention perhaps with the ownership of these establishments, or if it was domestic, it could be a place where him and someone else into
12:27 pm
the establishments in the past and maybe felt that they weren't treated right. it boils could be to getting right back to identifying this individual and who his friends were, who he dated, who he was involved with and on and on and on. jillville hold right will for a moment. i want to take the us live now to monterey park. we're ding to listen in to the police officers there. >> -- that occurred last night. sheriff luna? >> thank you, captain. as most of you were here earlier today to,st very important -- today, it's very important for our community to be updated on something as significant and tragic as this, so we're back up here making ourselves available to you for any questions. i think you're aware that the at 11:18 this morning we released a bulletin with a picture or an image of what we believe to be the suspect. we haven't named him, and
12:28 pm
there's a reason for that that. there are -- we have a lot of resources in the sheriff's department working with other agencies to make sure, again, that that our priority beyond taking care of victims and survivors of this horrible incident, that we get this man off the streets. so i think that you, all of you have received this. finish i want to address also that there is a tactical incident that's occurring in the city of torrance that is being covered. people have asked is that that your suspect. we don't know. as i said earlier odd, we had a vehicle that was described as a white box van, i guess you'd say, van of interest, and there is a van that looks just like what was described to us in the city of torrance.
12:29 pm
t it's a barricaded suspect situation. we are working with one of our partner agencies at torrance police department to resolve that. we believe there is a person inside of that vehicle. we don't know their condition. but we're going to handle that in the safest manner that we possibly can to try and identify that person. could it be our suspect? possibly. but at this point, if we're doing can our jobs correctly, we're not only looking at that situation or scenario, but we're making sure that we're looking at any and every possibility. so i do encourage our community if they have any leads, maybe they saw the picture of this individual, to come forward with any information that they believe may help us in this very critical and important
12:30 pm
investigation. that's going to be very important. i also want to talk about the victim/survivor side of this. in response to our mass shooting this morning, a victim resource center has been set up at the langley senior citizens' center located at 400 west 'emson avenue. emerson. and i want to make sure that appropriate victims, families, friends take advantage of that resource. there are many people behind me, some of hem will speak -- them will speak, representatives from different can agencies, and there's so many parts to, right? the response, the medical side of it. but as we're looking for the suspect, we not forget the victims and survivors. it's important because i can,
12:31 pm
you can just imagine trauma that they've experienced, and it's our responsibility to wrap our arms around them. so representatives from the los angeles county sheriff's department, federal bureau of investigation and the district attorney's office and the district attorney, george gascon, is standing here with us. red cross, department of health, victims' services are at center to assist the victims, survivors and their families. if anyone believes their relative may be a victim, please contact representatives at victims' resource center that i'm talking again about. and again, if you think that the you have questions, you're upset, you haven't been able to locate a family member that you think is involved, please, go out to this victim center, and we will assist you. that's why we're there. at the center we also have
12:32 pm
members from the psychological services bureau from the los angeles county sheriff's department. and as we go hour by with hour, if we see my other needs, already multiple agencies that have contacted us. everybody wants to help, which is amazing in this time because we need to depend on each other in difficult circumstances like this. so with that, i am going to turn it other to the next speaker. -- over to the next speaker. and i'll be here for questions at the end. thank you. >> thank you, sheriff luna. i also want to congratulate and actually give credit to the first responders as well as our sheriff team and the city of monterey park, the chief of police, the many deputies as well as the k.a.'s office, mr. gascon. and and also to our elected
12:33 pm
officials that are here with us morning representing the city of monterey park. i am, as you know, very heart broken to hear of the news of what occurred with the individuals that lost their lives, but i think now the we have to look at the victims, survivors. and as the sheriff said, this is what the county does best, help provide assistance, mental health services, any kind of relief that is possibly and legally conceivable for us to provide, we are here to support all of families and community and help them in their healing. it's tragic, what happened, but let's also think about people who put their lives out there at stake every single day to protect our safety, well-being and our physicians. the ones i can tell you that are l.a.cusc that are treating at least four victims will. they have also devoted their service to help providing protections for all of our
12:34 pm
residents in our community. county's office of emergency management has also been providing support and leveraging mental health resources at this very traumatic time. along with the city of monterey park which, as you know and you can see, are very united and very resilient. again, our heart-felt note to the families who lost their loved ones and to those that are recovering at this time. and with the help of public, we can help to identify the individual that was behind this incident. thank you. >> good afternoon, everyone. you know,-supposed to be -- this was supposed to be a time of celebration. we're celebrating lunar new year's, which is such an important component of many communities in l.a. the first hinge i want to do is express my condolences not only
12:35 pm
to the victims, family, but the entire community. my office has multiple roles in this space. number one, by state law, we run a mass casualty response unit. very early this morning we began to mobilize countywide resources in my office as well in order to provide service to the victims' families and ott community. and this is work that the has not only begun today but, quite frankly, will go on for months and possibly years. the impact of trauma from he vent goes on for a very long time. i want to thank the sheriff's department, sheriff luna and the monterey park police department, for the incredible work they have done. we've had also our own law enforcement component has been here since very early on working, first, with the monterey police department, and we will continue to do that with the sheriff and other partners. clearly, depending on whether
12:36 pm
the individual is arrested, we will talk about prosecution at a latester date -- later date, and that is appropriate. i also want to hank the u.s. justice department and our u.s. attorney who is here today with us. again, this is a joint effort and depending on what the conditions are, the bureau of investigation is also part of this work. but what i want to make sure that we get across to our entire community is that we are a united community. one of us is attacked, we're all here together. and regardless of what the motive was for this horrendous impact, this horrendous event, we will continue to work together. we're here with monterey park, with the entire community, and we're not only here today, we will be here every day until work is done. thank you. >> i'd like to thank everybody for coming out right now, and i want to speak to the monterey park community directly. our police department, our city
12:37 pm
continues to provide protective services throughout this incident. we work with our partners both on a county, a state and a federal level and try to resolve the situation as best we can and take the our suspect into custody. finish the sheriff talked about the langley center. that's where our victim assistance has been it up. i asked that the partners in the press give those victims' families a little bit of space over will so that they can get information. you can imagine when hay woke up this morning after lunar if new year festivals from yesterday and they may not have found their loved one next to them in the bed or at home and how that's affecting everybody in community right now. i want to assure everybody that as we get more information, we'll put it out as much as we can, and the monterey park police department is here as your partner in the community to keep it safe. any information that that people may have related to the incident, he can call the police
12:38 pm
station. we will try to get information out as soon as we get it. i have a lot of uniform police officers that are out on the street. every single one of them has committed to the community, and if someone mt. community has a question, has a concern, is scared, that officer's out there to make sure that they're okay, and all they have to do is reach out and ask the question. i'm going to open i it up to any questions, thank you. finish. [inaudible conversations] >> yes, it is a possibility. [inaudible conversations] >> i don't have that information here in front of me, but that's also possible.
12:39 pm
from -- yes. >> do you have a name -- [inaudible] are you withholding the name? >> we are withholding the name at time, and as i stated earlier, it is a priority to the apprehend this person, and we have a lot of resources throughout this entire region, and we believe if we are putting his name out, that will inhibit our ability to potentially arrest the suspect if he's out there or maybe flee. so, please, please be patient with us. you've been patient thus far, and this is why we're going to keep our word that we're going to continuously update you, because the community, i understand they're thirsty for information. and, yes, we did put his picture out, and that's because from a public safety perspective we
12:40 pm
want people to see who this is and then give us any information that they may have about his whereabouts so that we can safely take him into custody. and that's because from a public safety perspective we want people to see who this is and hen give us any information -- and then give us any information that they may have about his whereabouts so that we can safely take him into custody. [inaudible conversations] >> do we know if in the individual was working by himself and the motive of this situation? >> no if, we don't. and and we have to keep all those options open. was he by himself, were there other suspects? our detectives are looking at every angle. and that's the important thing that good investigators do, right? they keep every option on the table million we know for sure what the motive was, who else was involved.
12:41 pm
and other than getting this suspect into custody and providing the best case to either the district attorney or the u.s. attorney's office, our job is to collect every shred of this awful puzzle that has been laid out by this suspect. so work in progress. >> [inaudible] >> we've been asked that, and we're looking at every angle, whether it's domestic violence. the question was asked earlier about a hate crime. you have to leave the door open for any possibility. until we understand who this suspect is, what his motives are, where he came from, what his intention was, at the end of day as a sheriff's department investigative unit, we are responsible for providing all the facts and evidence to our partners in the prosecutor's office so we can prosecute this individual to the full extent of the haw. [inaudible conversations]
12:42 pm
>> [inaudible] >> i don't have that information. right now in front of me. we should be able to follow up with you on that as this incident goes on. >> sheriff -- [inaudible] confirm at this point that the suspect of the second location was, in fact, the same one who person. traited this mass shooting at -- [inaudible] >> we believe it is. i'm not confirming it 100% because, again, we still have to put whole thing together. but the picture or the image that we're showing you is from the second location, and we believe that they are both connected. but, again, we leave every option on the table. we have to leave it open because we don't want to focus on one area while someone else is getting away. so we've got on open all of it. [inaudible conversations] >> i mean, for a while -- dance
12:43 pm
hall, what kind of weapon was recovered from there, and how did he get away? >> earlier today, in regards to the weapon, i can tell you that it's not a high-powered assault rifle. but i don't want to get into the specifics on the weapon. in time we will. everyone will get exactly what a that is. but i don't want to say anything that will impact or create more challenges for us in trying to apprehend this person. [inaudible conversations] >> -- one weapon was involved in the deadly incident? >> we don't know that yet. and for us, just like i'm saying that there may be one suspect, we think there's one, there may be more. we also have to assume there may be more than one weapon, right in we may have recovered one. when we find him, that doesn't mean he's not armed and
12:44 pm
dangerous. >> sheriff, finally -- [inaudible] explain to us since the last briefing, what is new other than the photo? >> well -- >> the update, you got everyone here, i'm just trying to ascertain if there's anything new other than the photo. >> we have the photo that's new, there's the incident that's occurring many torrance where, obviously, there's a lot of questions and concerns about that. that's the update that we have -- >> -- something from that? you're not able to el the us anything from that, so i'm just asking if there's anything definitive which you can tell the us. >> i'm giving you definitive information now, and i'm giving you the information that we have. and i had a choice to sit back and not come out here and be available or come out here like we talked about earlier. and every i'm we get even a shred of an update, to give you what we have because there's significant public interest in this, as there should be.
12:45 pm
so if we call you out here in two hours, i'm hoping there's more information to provide because i want this solved as much as anybody out will does. we want to -- this has been painful. [inaudible conversations] >> let me go over here. >> [inaudible] >> i don't have that information in front of me. >> [inaudible] >> yeah. typically i don't put out the specific locations just out of respect for the business. i'm sure as day goes on we'll be putting out specific names of the businesses. as you can imagine if you're the business owner will and you had this horrible incident, they're palmtizedded as well. traumatized as well. >> one more question, one more. >> let me go over here. >> what hospitals were the victims taken to who? [inaudible] >> you know, it is normal that when we have victims of violent crime, we don't talk about specific hospitals, and i'm
12:46 pm
going to share just a quick story as to why we don't. earlier it may have been mentioned that they were at a specific hospital, and somebody called one of hose hospitals to say something along the lines that they want to go and finish job. that is absolutely horrible. so again, i don't believe that's the -- please, these victims and survivors are dealing with so much. let's not traumatize them more. so, yeah. and be patient with us. our sheriff's information bureau will put out another time when we're coming out, and i hope to have even better information. but as of right now, that's what we have. and, again, thoughts and prayers to all the families involved in. it's a horrible incident for our county. thank you very much. [inaudible conversations] bill: all right. so you heard it there, a fairly vague update from l.a. county
12:47 pm
sheriff robert luna. here's what he did say. he's calling the incident, we've been showing the live images of police surrounding that the vehicle in torrance, california, he's calling that a tactical incident/a barricaded suspect situation. he was asked, is that the suspect in this mass shooting. his response to that that was, it's possible. hay don't know yet. he said they have this guy's name, but they're deciding that they don't want about to put that name out because in his words it could the, quote, inhint the ability to arrest hi. they did, however, put out suspect's photograph, several pictures of him, which he said comes from, apparently, a surveillance camera from the second incident a after the main shooting in alhambra. this is incident where he apparently walked into another dance hall armed with a weapon and had that weapon wrestled away from him by people inside of that dance hall. he then apparently took off in that white cargo van which witnesses reported. that's how we got that first
12:48 pm
description of van. but, gillian, kind of interesting that, you know, we were talking about it, that they have his face, they put his face out, but they don't want to name him yet. gillian: they don't want to name him. l.a. county sheriff robert luna said that can potentially inhibit their ability to apprehend the suspect moving forward. he did not offer any more details about that. he did say the priority right now is taking the suspect off the street, and all resources are focused 100% on that. interestingly, they're also not identifying type of weapon that was recovered at that scene inial a ham bra. he also said -- in alhambra. he didn't eliminate possibility there were multiple weapons involved. there are multiple moving parts. he said victims' assistance is a huge priority, and they're working with anybody who has come forward identifying themselves as friends or family members of those ten people who were shot and killed on the scene last night, five men and five women. probably, he said, all of
12:49 pm
asian-american descent as well as ten other people who remain in local hospitals with injuries from that same shooting last night. we know right now that their conditions range from stable to critical, bill. bill: and the big question everybody obviously has is, is suspect inside of that vehicle right now. sheriff luna said, quote, we believe there is a person inside. however, we don't know that person's condition. there's been a lot of speculation flying around is this person dead or alive, is there somebody inside of vehicle in general, and the sheriff says they do believe there's somebody inside of this van which they say they do believe is connected to this mass shooting, but right now hay don't know condition of the person inside. we have reported that the bomb squad has arrived. if we can pull up that picture real quick, we'll show you these images. again, this is that suspect, they put his pace out, they're not naming him. the bomb squad, gillian, has arrived on scene and has, apparently, to help process and

clear that vehicle before they take any further steps. gillian: we're staying on the story throughout the hour until end. stick with us, we'll be right back. they customize your car insurance, so you only pay for what you need. contestants ready? go! only pay for what you need. jingle: liberty. liberty. liberty. liberty. gillian: to a fox news alert, you're looking at live footage in torrance, california, a parking lot will. police have surrounded a white
12:54 pm
van that the district attorney just announced matches the description of a van that was seen by witnesses fleeing the scene from two separate incidents last night, one in monterey park, california, the other in alhambra. it appears that the that s.w.a.t. team is now making a move on the vehicle after standing nearby for the last better part of an hour. we're learning new details coming in to the newsroom each moment now but, bill, it does appear her making a move on this van. bill: yeah, they are. and and the they are the elite of the elite, the sheriff's enforcement bureau. you can see those heavy armored vehicles they have, those are all very highly trained essentially s.w.a.t. guys, and this is the first activity we've seen at that surround ised van in at least well over an hour at this point. you can see they appear to be clearing that vehicle. they, the point guy's got his, you know, he had his gun pointed at first, but it does seem to be
12:55 pm
a pretty relaxed posture as heir going into that vehicle right now. we just heard sheriff robert luna say hay do believe there is somebody inside, but they don't know that person's condition. as you look at these live images, the sheriff's department has made enter into that vehicle, somebody just gave a hand motion. he might have put four fingers up for code four meaning it's clear, if possible. they're opening up the back of the van right there, and as you can see, it's still a fairly relaxed posture will, gillian, which we can interpret as, you know, it does the not appear as there is an active threat -- gillian: and as we continue to keep our eyes trained on live scene unfolding, bill, let's recap what we just learned from l.a. county sheriff robert luna. they are withholding the name of the suspect, they are withholding the type of weapon that is in police custody related to at least one incident in california last night. they have not yet eliminated the possibility that one or more
12:56 pm
other suspects were involved many east of these incidents -- either of these incidents. they're also describing what you are looking at right now as a tactical incident that's taking place, again, in a parking lot in torrance the, california. bill: and i think we're going to find out fairly quickly from these live images the status of that suspect. if we see a tarp come out, for instance, if they start trying to cover it up and they don't bring anybody out, that means there's specialtyly -- potentially somebody dead inside. but the way it looks right now, it does the not appear to be an active threat coming from inside of that vehicle and, again, these are the elite guys they've called in. this is not torrance the pd, this is the s.w.a.t team, essentially, for the l.a. county sheriff's department surrounding that vanishing going in now and, again, the reporting is from the sheriff himself that they believe that somebody is inside of that vehicle. gillian: let's bring back in brian claypool, he's been standing by. talk to us about what we're seeing on the scene right now. what do you make of this
12:57 pm
development right now? >> yeah. hey, gillian. i think the fact that sheriff robert luna did not disclose the identity of the individual many that white truck is because he suspected that maybe that individual's deceased. he probably killed himself. and typically, law enforcement doesn't release the name of somebody that's been killed or dead until they have notified family members. and i think that was, that was a tipoff, to me, that this person was dead inside that van. another comment i want to make is if you notice that white van doesn't have any windows around the side or the back. you just see the front windows. so put yourself in law enforcement's shoes. they don't know if there's somebody else in that van, and they can't see in the back of it. so i think that's what probably led to a longer delay in them going in to apprehend the suspect. bill: yeah. and, again, as we continue to watch this breaking news scene, this act active scene as these
12:58 pm
s.w.a.t. officers go into that vehicle, open it up, obviously, we're keeping a wider shot just because we don't know what's inside of that van right now. but again, as you mentioned, that's actually a really good point, brian. it does take a while for law enforcement to release the name of any deceased individuals pending notification of next of kin. so it's very possible that is the case here. again, i do want to report that what we don't know is if there is somebody dead or alive inside of that vehicle right now. all we do know is the sheriff said they to do believe there's somebody inside, and they don't know that person's condition. but you can see these images yourself. all those deputies walked up to that vehicle, scanned it, searched it and then very nonchalantly have gone back to the rears of their vehicle. they're not holding their guns up, it does not appear they're trying to take the anybody into custody right now, so that leaves us, essentially, one of two options, there's nobody inside of that car, or there is the somebody inside of that car, they're just no longer posing any kind of threat. and, gillian, remember, when
12:59 pm
they put this bay's photo out, they to recap what we know he is an asian american mail. we know he weighs about 150 pounds racing by witnesses fleeing the scene at the second location last night, we know he shot the same suspect but shot and killed 10 people at monterey park. police are obviously not releasing his name we don't know who he is this hour. it is unlikely we will learn that information very soon. brexit of them came on that press conference is a sheriff telling the public they got that image of him that surveillance image of him from that second location where he apparently wafted the nash initial mass shooting walked into another dance floor, listen the second armed and apparently have that gun rustled away from him by people there. he took off in that white man
1:00 pm
and the results of that as you are seeing in the parking lot entrance to that man is surrounded windows are broken out, sheriff's clearing it right now. we are just waiting for an update whether or not there is anyone alive inside of that vehicle. >> coverage of the story will continue throughout the afternoon, "fox news live" continues now. space bar we can to the breaking news develops a mass shooting in southern california last night. as we have been reporting police surrounding that white van. sources say is connected to the horrible mass shooting celebrating a lunar new year. police say they do believe there is a person inside for their unsure if it is the suspect. los angeles times taps a photograph or what appears to be a mail body slumped over the steering will of that man with a bullet hole in the upper right of the driver side window. that could indicat
