1:00 pm
and the results of that as you are seeing in the parking lot entrance to that man is surrounded windows are broken out, sheriff's clearing it right now. we are just waiting for an update whether or not there is anyone alive inside of that vehicle. >> coverage of the story will continue throughout the afternoon, "fox news live" continues now. space bar we can to the breaking news develops a mass shooting in southern california last night. as we have been reporting police surrounding that white van. sources say is connected to the horrible mass shooting celebrating a lunar new year. police say they do believe there is a person inside for their unsure if it is the suspect. los angeles times taps a photograph or what appears to be a mail body slumped over the steering will of that man with a bullet hole in the upper right of the driver side window.
1:01 pm
that could indicate there is indeed a gunman or potential suspect who is dead inside that bad but the government and the killing shot killed 10 people and injured others as they were all celebrating lunar new year end a dance studio near los angeles, then went to another site. police not releasing the name of the suspect. perhaps as we have been reporting the next of kin has not been identified. it seems they have the site secured for now but this is another hour of fox news 55 eric shawn, arthel. arthel: i am arthel neville port los angeles county sheriff robert luna gave an update just moments ago. what we are seeing here, live is happening. swat teams gaining entry into that white band that had been involved in a tactical incident. this is been going on now in torrance it's happening as we speak. in this standoff had taken place for about an hour.
1:02 pm
it has now come to an end swat teams gave gaining entry into that band. and torrance is again about 30 minutes away from last nights shooting shooting. this sheriff luna has not identified the suspect. it is believed according to eyewitnesses that a white man, this van allegedly was seen at the second location last night link from that location and trent h. and now here is the van and torrance, california. rosina coleman is where this all began in monterey park. and christina has a nuisance spread their that they may have the suspect now and who may be deceased? has that is spread there where you are? >> we are hearing it. but it is not confirmed. i can tell you i'm looking at live stream of video aerials over the swat team is closing in on that white vamp i got a brief glimpse of what appeared to be a
1:03 pm
man slumped over a wheel. at the video i am looking at right now this does not seem as though -- that the situation is a threat for law enforcement officers. they are standing around obviously clearing that seen there. but again, they did not confirm the man in that white man is the suspect for they also did not confirm whether he is dead or alive. but from what i did see he is not moving. again this is a very active situation. a very fluid is seen. they also confirmed and that press conference that the suspect, the man they are identifying as an asian mail, they say that was in the ballroom shortly after 10:30 p.m. and open fire on the people they are afraid they do say that suspect they believe is the same person that people wrestled down
1:04 pm
at a nearby ballroom about 20 minutes after the initial shooting. they wrestle that person down and were able to get a gun away from them. and thank goodness that they did considering the tragedy that we are dealing with here. again you have 10 people who are killed and at least 10 people who were injured. their conditions range from stable to critical. now the witnesses at the second location, they said the suspect took off in a white van. that suspect vehicle, law enforcement says is identical to the van we have been seeing in our live coverage over there in torrance that's now being surrounded by a swat team as they work to clear out that seen. now, law enforcement the sheriff referred to that incident with the white man for he referred to it as a tactical situation. he says again he does not know if the man in that vehicle is a
1:05 pm
dead or alive he described this as a barricaded suspect situation. so again, a very, very fluid situation over it a lot of moving parts. a lot of people want to understand the motive in this case. we are hearing this could be domestic related. but again the sheriff did not confirm that in the latest press conference. we are going to continue to follow this and wait for more developments in this case, arthel. arthel: and sheriff luna also pointed out, while they are focusing on the suspect in getting all of those details ironed out, he didn't want to make sure we know he is focusing on the victims and the surviving family members. of those who did not perish in the horrible shooting. what are you hearing on the site? i believe the earlier you had some people who did show up of course it devastated wondering why? why would this happen to our committee and api community, yet again another tragedy that they have to suffer through.
1:06 pm
>> yes it is absolutely awful they are suffering through this tragedy. moments ago we heard in the press conference victims resource center has been set up to help people impacted by this senseless crime. so there will be people likely going there for help. we can only imagine what it was like. i heard one of the officials mentioned in the press conference, some people woke up this morning and their loved her was not beside them. they are people right now, right now this very moment in these hospitals waiting for their loved ones as they fight for their life from this deadly shooting. so again, yes law enforcement very concerned about the victims here and the impact it is having on their loved ones and this community as a whole. again, this happened at a dance hall from what i am hearing there's lots of events therefore there were people there saturday night celebrating again, last night was the celebration a big celebration thousands of people out here for the lunar new
1:07 pm
year's eve celebration. that was going on all day long. so you had a lot of people out here who were very vulnerable and is extremely creepy to imagine this in gunman was walking around here and just moments before he went and ended that attack around so many people who are out here yesterday celebrating. again, law enforcement the sheriff did not say this was a hate crime for they are unclear of what this is at this time but i know that it's been mentioned to him also as well as whether this was a domestic related incident. again the motive in this case is still under investigation but we are in the very preliminary stages for to be very interesting to find out what they can say about that man who appeared to be slumped over in that white man in torrance right now, arthel. arthel: absolutely christina coleman live in monterey park thank you very much will check back in, thanks christina. eric: bring in joint terrorism task force members steve rogers but steve we are on the air
1:08 pm
about an hour and a half ago. i was pointing out the media had a direct line of sight to the open window basically the window of the van which could indicate the suspect at that point was dead. when we saw a glimpse of in a moment of doubt the los angeles times appears to be a man slumped over the driver's wheel with a bullet hole in the right side of the window. can you take us through what police do what they think they have that suspect? if he is shot dead why did they take so long? was a concern over explosives? concern over any other issues to approach and egress to that man? >> a few things, eric. one is your absolutely right. the concern there could be explosives in that vehicle. secondly it could've been someone else in that vehicle. the police just didn't know. they were very cautious very methodical and very, very effective in making sure anyone in the area or in the first responder would not be harmed or killed. remember if there was an explosive device in their it
1:09 pm
could have been powerful and did a lot of damage a lot of people. they did a good job before they decided to go to that van. eric: imagine there's a suspect and they know we shot dead as you just said, the responsibility is to protect rate your concern about someone in there, maybe a hostage, other people innocent bystanders. >> well, that is right, eric. at this moment as you and i are speaking i believe one.will be connected very, very soon and that.is the other incident the establish of our people wrestled the suspect down. i believe they got a weapon. there is going to be dna on that weapon, fingerprints for this going to be evidence that will say it yes this is the guy that was here or no. that is one.i think will be connected rather quickly. secondly, if they have his name is you and i are speaking i'm sure they're point for search warrants on his home, on his properties, on his vehicles, on
1:10 pm
his phone, ipad, computers et cetera. they will rapidly move forth this a lot of dots will be connected and was or anyone else involved? was this domestic? what was the motive? they will wrap this up sooner rather than later. eric: police possibly not releasing the suspect standing next of kin have not been notified yet. steve we talked about a traffic there's report of a white panel white cargo van just like that one for they must have fanned out and done traffic stops all over los angeles county. if you look at the position of this event you've got one tactical vehicle right up against the front grill played the other one right up his rear and so he can't move, he knows he is trapped there's no place to go. >> eric, i've got to tell you i'm very, very amazed at how effective the police were in such a large, large area. they were able to go down the highways and byways and streets et cetera as you say looking for that van.
1:11 pm
so it goes to the point of teamwork. every police department in that area working together federal, state, county law enforcement. they did a great job of pulling their team together and finally getting this individual off the streets. eric: the mass shootings hitting the asian american community during the celebratory lunar new year. a lot of concerns about possible hate crime the suspect we have a photograph we can put that up what police have said an asian man described as 20 -- 30 years old being see him there if his glasses and a black jacket. at the same time we gestured christina coleman talk about a possible domestic dispute. walk us through that and what possibilities that could be for a mad man to open fire on two dance halls and people having fun, and being together, relaxing, enjoying life the opposite of maybe what was going to the suspects life. >> you know he went and targeted
1:12 pm
these two dance halls there's your common denominator there as far as target. secondly what goes through my mind is could he have visited these dance halls before? was he treated improperly, got angry at someone? did he go and take a date there or in associate to both of these places and just felt they weren't treated properly. but to me, eric, it looks like this could have been a domestic we are leaning away from a hate. the fact of the matter is anger and wanting to send a message to take all those lives this individual wanted to send a message remains to be seen with the motive is a kind of lien away from a hate crime and lead more towards a crime where he was associated with someone whether it be domestic or not or someone outside his circle. eric: 's impersonal hatred or anger perhaps steve rogers thank you standby it will go back to arthel. arthel: thank you guys wondering former d.c. homicide detective and fox news contributor ted williams joining us now by phone. now ted, the latest information
1:13 pm
that we have is a domestic violence possibly being raised as a possible motive there. where does that take your investigative mind? >> well, you know that very well could be the motive. but i think law enforcement, arthel are operating an abundance of caution for what they are doing is trying to put the puzzle together to try to determine what the actual motive was. and in doing so as steve rogers just represented they are going now away from the body of a person that the going to work away from that to try to determine who and what this person was all about. and in doing so they now know i'm kind of an identification i am sure of the person. they are going to look at his home. they are going to look at a social media site. they're going to contact
1:14 pm
individuals who know this individual. in order to put together some portions of this puzzle to try to determine what was his mo motive. if his motive was domestic, the question that begs an answer is why at both of these locations? let me make sure we are clear. while they have said they believe both of those locations are connected, i am sure they are actually trying to connect the dots. one of the ways they are able to do so perhaps is by the fact it's a central location they wrestled a gun away from that person. so they are going to try to make the connection between the first incident where the 10 individuals unfortunately were killed and the gun that he may or may not have used. now, as you know they have now
1:15 pm
been able to make entrance into the white man. so they know what is in that white van for they are also trying to make sure to try to connect the dots there as to whether there is a connection between the first incident and the second incident. >> well, eyewitnesses did see the white man fleeing from the second incident. that happened at tran eight. according to reports, people there wrestled that gunman to the ground. so i would imagine, ted, you tell me detectives of that second location would want to interview those eyewitnesses. especially the people who wrestled the suspect to the ground. they can answer questions about his demeanor, if he said anything et cetera, correct? >> absolutely. they are going to want to interview individuals at the second incident as well as the
1:16 pm
incident where the individuals were killed to try to determine what, if anything this person may have said. i think you are going to learn in this case video feeds from around that area of the second incident and the first incident make all the difference in the world and helping law enforcement to immediately focus laser wise on perhaps the white van and the white man in question. arthel: excuse me ted, if you look at your screen we are looking to the live shot here at that white van and torrance. i've got a group of about six swat officers approaching the rear of that van. they are at a pretty good alert posture, what is this tell you?
1:17 pm
>> they are concerned. steve rogers represented earlier there may very well be others in the van. they don't know what is in that van. they have found a way to surround the van. they are using armored personnel carrier to try to find out as much as they can about the van and whoever it could even be booby-trapped. as a result of that you've got them. >> and much of you can see the screen, excuse me ted i'm not sure if you can see the live shot but right now both back doors are open. one swat team member just jumped into the van so what does that tell you? >> that tells you they now know how many people are actually in that van. as i said a little earlier, they are being very patient and have been patient. and they now believe as they have now made intrusion into the
1:18 pm
van that they cannot safely bring this to some conclusion. meaning this in barricade of that van. arthel: meanwhile there is reportedly a body in the drivers seat by accounts of the photograph taken by los angeles times. you have a suspect slumped over the driver's seat there in the driver's seat. if they would wait for the corner to come to the scene no one and that swat team would touch that body, correct? >> i don't want to touch the body for several different reasons. one, yes they want the corner to perhaps come to the scene. they are also concerned about whether the body could very well be booby-trapped. they are deeply concerned about that also. that was one of the reasons i believed they waited in order to make an intrusion into that van is they were also concerned about the possibilities the van itself could be booby-trapped.
1:19 pm
so those are some of the things they are doing and acting out an abundance of caution for this is excellent law enforcement work. arthel: it really isn't ted if you can some the 7:30 -- 40 seconds will get you after the si the break and looking at this location here in torrance. tokyo central is it asian market die so another store to go to there. this is a community. not only is this a community there and torrance, california very peaceful place but also as a moderate parkway let's talk about the victims. let's talk about the trauma to the api community and what sort of counseling might be available to them or necessary for them. >> there is going to be significant and that can see. i would have to believe the community as a whole is going to try to come together. as you said this is a wonderful,
1:20 pm
beautiful, peaceful community that has been disrupted by what is taken place. but i have to believe this community will come together and they will heal together as a result of what is taking place here this afternoon and last night. arthel: what started as a beautiful celebration of the lunar new year has turned into a devastating nightmare. ted williams, thank you. we will continue our coverage right after this break. okay everyone, our mission is complete balanced nutrition. together we support immune function. supply fuel for immune cells and sustain tissue health. ensure with twenty-five vitamins and minerals, and ensure complete with thirty grams of protein.

1:23 pm
1:24 pm
eric: police have now been surround that van that you see we have been reporting on for the past several hours. there appears to be the body of a man slumped inside that van and the driver's side. los angeles times has a photograph of what appears to be a dead man slumped over the driver's wheel with a bullet hole in the upper right-hand corner of the driver's side window. police say that gunman, a gunman shot and killed 10 people and injured others as they were all sold bring that lunar new year end a dance studio in los angeles in half an hour later going to another one in alhambra where the suspect was sent wrestled to the ground. drop the gun and fled.
1:25 pm
this apparently hopefully is the end of it. suspect dead either shot himself or shot by police, we do not know which. as you can see the crime scene investigators now arriving as the swat team has left. steve rogers is with this. steve, walk us through the next steps. got them they come the corner comes, it has been cleared. what do police do next? they have not released the name of the suspect the photograph possibly because the next of kin have not been identified yet. >> a next step obviously to preserve the crime scenes where this individual committed these horrendous acts. there will be at search warrants, that will be executed on this person's home, any properties he owns, cars, ipads, computers, they're going to be looking for electronic footprints and chat rooms for this a lot of work is going to go on with search warrants. in addition to that i believe
1:26 pm
one thought will be connected sooner rather than later will answer the question was is the same person at the other location? he was wrestled down and a gun was taken from him. dna evidence any type of evidence may be on that weapon that will answer the question as to whether he was at that location. interviews are going to be critically important. interviews at both locations with regard to witnesses who saw him walk in, who saw him doing anything or say anything that may lead to the fact this is the individual. then of course a video is all over the place production is a video inside both locations what is important in those videos outside. and then, eric, every time we see something like this we end up watching videos on cell phones. so people in a festive atmosphere may be taking cell phone pictures of their families having some joyous times. this individual somehow gets in that video.
1:27 pm
so it is critically important people review what they videotaped and if they see anything like this individual looks like in their video, get that to the police. eric: that's an amazing. cell phones all over the place you could have potentially some the shooting by the suspect on those videos. in terms of a mode of the concern first was it could be a potential hate crime against the asian-american community. the two communities there are predominantly asian american your thoughts on that? it takes a lot of anger and hatred and mental instability to walk into a dance hall insert opening fire to kill people. >> or aptly right kind of leaning away from a hate crime because of what you just articulated regarding the background of the victims and the suspect. it seems to me this individual
1:28 pm
wanted to send a message. the anger that was dished out as a result of killing a large number of people was in fact the message they wanted to send. why? they could've went into those locations a week ago, a month ago, maybe with friends and associates or whatever and felt that they were mistreated somehow. or maybe had an argument with somebody at these locations and decided well, i'm going to send them a message. i lean more towards the domestic end of it than they hate crime end of it. it seems to me you've got two targets that were dance halls, places where you have fun and i believe there is a possibility this person was there at both places once before he took the action that he did against these victims. eric: 's are possibility of antisocial type of psychotic killer who just hates the community with a passion for whatever triggers someone who is mentally unstable off and they decide to try and do something like this against the community at large even if they were a
1:29 pm
member of that community? >> it's a good point you bring up. that remains to be seen. i believe, eric, the police will make that determination if there were many parties going around in many locations or questions would be why these two loca locations? eric: because these 21 is a half-hour away by this got to be thought in the suspect's mind and some pre-meditation to know where to go and drive. that initially tells you something. >> it sure does pretty brought up a good word, premeditation. that person knew obviously there's a lot of parties around, why these locations? expect will be set earlier. there is a reason why these two locations that reason may be as reported earlier, the possibility we do not know the possibility of some sort of dispute whether it be domestic with owners, with friends. that person went to those locations and my view for specific reason. eric: finally quickly the body
1:30 pm
still in the van. the corner comes, they take measurements and they go all through that van before they take the body out? >> oh yes they do per adobe a lot of evidence in that van. ted williams earlier said a very significant point and that was patients. not only does the swat team have patients but the police working throughout the community had patients. the guys that made the traffic stop had patients and now the corner will have to be somewhat patient as they collect evidence from that van. before they let now as you can see but will continue our live coverage on the unfolding events with this van, with the suspect who apparently is now dead. as wells with the mass shooting at all of the victims in this horrible incident california's fox news continues this late sunday afternoon. oh man. always look for the grown in idaho seal.

arthel: happened in monterey park, california were christina
1:35 pm
coleman has been reporting on this story throughout the day. it is a developing story, christina what can you tell us right now? what is the very latest? >> alright as for the very latest in nearby torrance in that city a source tells us that the man in the white van that was pulled over during a traffic stop this morning, again that white man law enforcement set a white van is a suspect vehicle. while our source tells us the person in that white van is dead. the sheriff would not confirm if the person and that vehicle was alive or not. in a press conference had moments ago with our source is telling us that person is dead. also i was able to get a glimpse of the person in that van and one of those aerial views of the lifestream shots i could see a man slumped over the steering wheel. that is where we stand with the man in that case but again law enforcement has not confirmed
1:36 pm
whether or not that person is the suspect in this mass shooting break the mass shooting happens here in monterey park shortly before 10:30 p.m. last night at the start ballroom dance studio just east of downtown los angeles. ten people were killed and 10 were injured. their conditions range from stable to critical. that shooting occurred near the site where thousands of people had been gathered all throughout the day to celebrate lunar new year's eve. very large asian population for the authorities have not stated a motive in this case for there's questions about whether this was a hate crime or whether this was related to some sort of domestic dispute. the sheriff did not confirm what the motive is in this case for they say they are looking at a lot of things right now for there are a lot of moving parts again they did not state a motive. the sheriff also noted the tragic, the awful impact this is
1:37 pm
having on the community. he says it's on the county's most heinous cases. twenty minutes after the mass shooting here in monterey park we are told that the suspect went to another dance hall about 2 miles north of here, with a gun. some individuals were able to wrestle the suspect and get that gun away from him. they also say that the suspect took off in a white van which brings us to today. the police have not confirmed whether that white man belongs to the suspect in this case. but clearly you can understand how some people are connecting at this time. again you have a white van there that looks like the suspect vehicle. we are also told there was some kind of incident that occurred there. and that person according to our sources was now dead but were waiting for more information print that is the very latest on that situation right now,
1:38 pm
arthel. >> a lot of moving parts. a lot of emotional impact. have you any reports from that resource center there in monterey park that has been set up for relatives of the victims? >> i have not been there yet. i can imagine that a number of people will be going there. too not only get resources but possibly help. again this is supposed to be a very happy time. they are celebrated the new y year. there are lots of people here yesterday. there is a tent set up i see sign saying happy new year. it's supposed to be a very happy time. instead this community is in mourning. they are grieving. they have 10 individuals who were killed. i am told they were five males and five females who died in this senseless murder party of victims fighting for their lives right now who were transferred
1:39 pm
to area hospitals. people just praying for their recovery. it's going to take years for people to hear from this process of this magnitude their people here yesterday now dead. and police are working the deputy, the sheriff come all the resources you're pulling together to try to get to the bottom of this and figure out what happened, why this happened and any evidence that offer some peace of mind to people who have so many questions about this case, arthel. arthel: so many people are curious. it is an active scene where you are so of course folks are going to be kept at bay. but from your vantage point do you see people in the community standing around the perimeter trying to get a glimpse of what happened or trying to talk to each other and make sense of this insane situation? >> absolutely. from my vantage point just
1:40 pm
across the way i'm looking at an older man who has his arm wrapped around his wife. he is just rubbing her back she is standing there she looks heartbroken. this has rocked their community. they do not understand why someone would do this. it is senseless. the people fighting for their lives in the hospital we don't know whether their condition will improve or worsen. we hope it does not get worse in this case. again they are receiving medical treatment right now around-the-clock. yet the medical crews working we have investigative effort things seem to move fast he of the mass shooting that happened last night in less than 24 hours later they are releasing the picture of the suspect. which by the way they got at the ballroom the second ballroom where people they wrestled him down and grab that gun away, thank goodness.
1:41 pm
so for my vantage point there's a lot of people gathered out here. they're standing in the corner with their loved him with their children. also noted just from where i'm standing at this intersection i am looking at, at least five or six surveillance cameras. that is some good news. there's going to be a lot of surveillance evidence collected in this area for this a lot of cameras here there's a lot of people. thousands of people yesterday to celebrate the lunar new year. police are going to be asking a lot of witnesses what happened for they have not identified the name of the suspect. at least if they have it they are probably able to go to his house, go to his home question his relatives and friends and collect a lot more evidence to try to piece together white someone who opened fire on these innocent people during this new year's celebration, arthel. >> as we have to do all too often, our prayers are indeed
1:42 pm
with the community that has been impacted by this horrible horrible tragedy. christina coleman there in monterey park thank you very much christina. right now were going to bring in former d.c. homicide detective ted williams joining us again by phone. ted, based on by what we know at this unfolding story in this investigation, what are you following? what is your experience telling you? >> one of the things we all want to know, arthel is the motive. why would someone go into a dance hall where people are celebrating the lunar new year shoot and kill 10 individuals and wound many others? and then, why would a person
1:43 pm
perhaps leave that location. they have not directly told us they have not between the first location and the second location i think law enforcement clearly knows whether they can connect those dots. then we have the second location a person comes in with a gun. if they are able to wrestle that gun away from that person. this was a another dance hall they were celebrating the lunar new year. the question that begs an answer is what was a motive? why would anyone want to do something of this nature? we know anybody, anybody who commits this kind of offense is irrational and unacceptable to us. i have got to tell you will meet look at the fact this person at
1:44 pm
the second location where there was a barricade and it appears that person may have very well taken their own life. i am sure at the next press conference there would be able to connect the dots to tell us if that is the same who took the lives of 10 last night and moderate. >> really quickly, ted, i wanted to ask you eric and steve rogers were talking about this for you monterey park. you have alhambra and potentially torrance with a third location if that was in fact the suspect why did he go there? if he was going home what does that tell you? >> everything all three of those are crime scenes. what they are trying to do is try to determine if the person
1:45 pm

guys talked about the human component of this and, um, and the fact that you know this will have reverberations literally for years to come between the families of the victims. the individuals who were shot and are survivors. um . they will be affected for the rest of their lives. the family of the officers as well, steve put it very, very well. you know, you know, my organization is the wounded blue and we deal with injured disabled officers all over the country. this could have this situation could have gone very, very badly. um we've had so many ambushes of law enforcement officers under similar circumstances when you're dealing with an individual who is clearly, um, a as violent as this individual was, and he is willing to take lives indiscriminately. that is a major. that is a major threat. when confronting a person like this, so what we
1:55 pm
have seen a lot in this country in in this nation in the last year, um is a major uptick in ambushes under circumstances that are that are kind of similar to this. so this individual who is who has not been yet identified, could have opened fire on those officers and taken their lives as well. so there there's a there's a lot of play here, but the investigation has just begun. what is the motivation? what was what is this individual's criminal history? what what was it that incited him? to commit this incredibly cruel act of major violence, and that's what the investigation is going to is going to, you know, lean towards now and then the you know there's the other factors of did he act alone? um and then this is still in the
