jesse, you've been playing lot of neil diamond lately. is there a reason? the deal is, every host gets to choose their music. i pick a musical artist for the week. i let the producers pick the songs. i don't micromanage the songs. tucker is next. ♪ ♪ >> tucker: good evening and welcome to "tucker carlson tonight" on saturday morning, august 10, 2019, attorney general william barr was working in his home office. when his chief of staff said jeffrey epstein was found dead. barr was shocked. his first reaction was to worry that some people in america might not buy the idea that jeffrey epstein killed himself.
5:01 pm
no one will believe it was a suicide. there will be conspiracy theories all over the place. that's a pretty odd response if you think about it. at the time, there was no way that bill barr could have known how jeffrey epstein died. his first concern will be fining out what happened. instead, his first concern that the public might jump to conclusion about what happened. many americans did not believe that jeffrey epstein killed himself. given the strange circumstances of his death. he was going to take a sustained public relations campaign to convince americans that jeffrey epstein killed himself. bill barr was willing to make the effort. he flew to new orleans, gave a speech and said this. >> i was appalled and the whole department was, frankly, hangry

to learn of the mcc's failure to adequately secure this prisoner. we are learning serious of irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation. the fbi and the office of inspector general, are doing just that. we will get to the bottom of what happened. there will be accountability. >> tucker: so the country is skeptical and concerned. bill barr is skeptical and concerned. we will get to the bottom of what happened. there will be accountability. that turned out to be untrue. three and a half years after he died, no one has gotten to the bottom what happened that day. there's been no accountability for it. only people punished were two low level guards who fell asleep on duty. both pleaded guilty. last year with no remain explanation, an obama appointed
5:03 pm
judge dropped all charges against both of them. one of the guards may still work for the federal government. as we're getting to the bottom of what happened, despite many promises, neither the fbi nor the justice department issued a report how jeffrey epstein died. once again, three and a half years after one of the most widely covered death of our time, there's still no answers and there was still no accountability. why is that? many reasons probably. one of them is that washington veteran bill barr, only man in the omodern era to serve attorney general twice, declared the epstein case closed. barr seemed to have good reason for doing that. by end of 2019, he writes, i was confident that jeffrey epstein committed suicide by hanging himself. why did bill barr believe that? the first piece of evidence is this. the new york city medical examiner had conducted an autopsy and ruled that epstein
5:04 pm
killed himself by hanging. that's the first piece. second is this, it's a videotape that confirmed the medical examiner's finding. i personally reviewed that video footage. it shows that between the time epstein was locked in the cell 7:49 p.m. and the time he was discovered the next morning at 6:30, no one entered his tier. therefore, bill barr explained we can know for sure jeffrey epstein killed h himself. i think the agency is slowly on its way back. in other words, everything is fine. let's move on. virtually every news story about jeffrey epstein's death deannounced skepticals of the official story as crazy. baseless conspiracy theories. what's amazing is that none of these reporters, veterans at the
5:05 pm
"washington post," the associated press, and others, none of them ever thought to revisit >> bill: bill barr's assessment of epstein's death. if you did that, you saw what bill barr said about jeffrey epstein was absurd and dishonest. barr began by claiming that the medical examiner ruled his death as suicide. that's not true. the initial cause of death was not suicide but pending. the medical examiner who performed the autopsy could not say how he died. the pathologist came away believing epstein was murdered. after reviewing more than thousand suicide by hanging. jeffrey epstein did not kill
5:06 pm
himself. barbara sampson who was not present at the autopsy overruled the judgment of those who work. days later, barbara sampson declared jeffrey epstein's death a suicide. both camera did not work that night famously. no one explained why they didn't work. the video footage that bill barr said he watched didn't cover epstein's cell. no one came in or out of the tier barr said. therefore, jeffrey epstein killed himself.
5:07 pm
let's consider that claim. on the night of august 9th, jeffrey epstein was held in the special housing unit in manhattan. the most secured part of the city's federal lock up. it will be physically impossible for a trainer to get out without an electronic pass and without being seen by countless cameras between the streets. if jeffrey epstein was murdered, he was not murdered by an intruder, he was murdered by someone on his own cell block. obviously. there were seven other cells. if you're looking for a killer, you would figure out who was in those cells. no one seems to have thought of that or done it. the bureau of prisons refused to provide us with a list of the inmates on epstein's tier. it's not clear how many were interviewed by investigators despite that some of them were transferred out of the facility after epstein's death. that's a baffling oversight.
5:08 pm
instead, attorney general bill barr assured the country no one from outside came in and declared it solved. that's a remarkable way to assess a potential crime scene. bill barr was not a civilian or a crime novel aficionado. he was the nation's top cop. his job was to solve crimes. with all his law enforcement experience it never seemed to dawn on bill barr, if there was a killer, it would have come on epstein's tier. no one in the entire fbi suggested this to bill barr. excuse me mr. attorney general, it doesn't matter what the camera showed, what mattered is what happened inside the tier. no one at d.o.j. appeared to say that to bill barr and no one in the media noticed.
5:09 pm
it's all strange. we've pressed pretty hard for the last few days on this question. we've pressed because you don't want to live in a country where it's possible to murder people in federal lock up, cover it up the killings and get away with it. that's scary. that should not be allowed. in the case of jeffrey epstein, it appears that it was allowed. one level you can see why it was. this is one of the those crimes that has no natural constituency pushing to solve it. the only people who liked jeffrey epstein was his friends. some of them are happy he's dead. here's bill gates who spent quite bit of time with jeffrey epstein. >> what did you do when you found out about his background? >> well, i said i regretted having those dinners there's nothing new. >> is there a lesson for you,

reported suicide attempt. epstein's body had been moved to the prison infirmary. that's a clear violation of federal policy. jeffrey epstein was dead for at least two hours. by the time the em ts arrived jeffrey epstein was clad in a hospital house gown. why would anyone do that? to make it even stranger, jeffrey epstein's corpse was intubated. there was hand held video of all of of this happening. that video has never been released. authorities will not acknowledge that it exist. it does exist. nor, has the emt's account what they saw that day, ever been released. nor, most strikingly, are the

photographs of jeffrey epstein dead in his cell. that means it's impossible to know the position of his body when it was found or how he died. was jeffrey epstein hanging from a bed sheet? they say he was strangled by a ligature. his neck was bloody but the strip of sheet was not. or, was he killed from the electrical chord from his sleep apnea machine. these are very basic questions. these are not spheres theory -- conspiracy theories. they are the essential questions in any legitimate investigation. apparently, nobody tried to answer them. we call the department of justice asked them to explain. they refused on the grounds, there's an active investigation in progress. there's a lie. there's no investigation into jeffrey epstein's death. we're moving on four years now,

there has never been an investigation into jeffrey epstein's death. we can speculate why that is. all the explanations are bad. maybe someone in the new republican congress should look into all of this. not because jeffrey epstein is an american hero, it will be nice to see the federal government forced to tell the truth about something. an amazing and affirming story a man rescued after being lost at sea off the coast of florida and remarkable video to accompany that man join us straight ahead. plus, a major escalation in the war against russia. that's straight ahead.
