watch out, watch out. watch out. >> mom, mom, mom. >> the five officers were fired and charged with second-degree murder among other charges. after watching the horrifying video the sheriff in shelby county, tennessee placed two deputies on administrative leave who would appear at the scene and launched an internal investigation. steve harrigan is alive in memphis tonight outside the police department, steve to you. >> and molly, more repercussions from this savage event for just learned the police chief has disbanded a scorpion unit all by former police officers accused of second-degree murder were part of that elite anti- crime-fighting unit. as an initiative of the new chief about 40 officers not going to be disbanded for you can see behind me two or 300 protests in front of headquarters despite the rain for there is not meant violence since that tape was released on the internet by the officials here at 7:00 p.m. on friday.

2:04 pm
beating this guy. it seemed personal. it makes you ask what happened before? i don't think i've ever seen one cough hold up a citizen and they take turns on beating the individual. i believe they arrived at the scene totally out of control. they broke so many police po policy. they did not just put his life at risk for if they were conducting in the other stuff like that they put their own lives at risk. you never go in a car that way you never go in and drag someone out of the car. it is clear they did not know how to use her batons the right way. they were suffering each other with the mace, cross firing the taser. everything that you should not do as an officer, they did that night. and there is a personal side to this. growing up wanting to be a cop.
2:05 pm
covering crime on this network every single day i'm with cops every single day. i've so many sources in different police departments for it all them condemn this by the way. i have not heard one cop defend this. but to have black officers who understand the disconnect between the community. i had a friend has a social justice warrior criticized cops all the time came a cop as opposed to a different perspective. he wanted to bridge the gap. to have these officers and understand black american also members of the blue make life worse for more cops. i mean the consequences of this. don't think we really unde understand. there's already low recruitment right now for cops. a lot of people don't want to do the job. we are literally dealing with what is left right now for this going to be more people that resign from law enforcement. the damage and distrust individuals are going to have with cops.
2:06 pm
i say this not in a as if it is a favorite cops are the only profession you are judged by the actions of a few but there's a lot of bad doctors out there, people do not have hesitation when the go to the doctor there's a lot of bad dentists out of their slot of bad journalists out there right? cops are judged by the actions of a few. the facts they were black cops as well creates a whole another layer of this. it is sad all around. agree for his family for a degree for his mom. it's important to note unlike some other situations where we have heard people scream out for their mom, his mom was about three streets away. he's screaming for his mom he was screaming at mom come save me. we are talked about a, okay? >> lawrence, he mentioned love the place you work with everyday resources your connection with all the time about these issues are furious at her the self in the video.

the prince of the fraternal order of police release a lengthy statement calling the officers of the october of 2021. at the time the assistant police chief said we have this unit to go to high crime areas to focus on auto theft, game measuring gang related crime, drug incidents because people in these communities the grocery store without feeling like they're going to be assaulted or shot. it is been disbanded permanently at the request of the nichols family. instead of just a review.
2:08 pm
now what i have consequences for the very people who live in these neighborhoods succeeded increase in violent crime and they need good cops to be there? they do not need police taken out of their communities for thinning cops put in. he mentioned the recruiting numbers are so low that you get back cops taken these jobs. >> i look at it from two different sides. scorpion unit is much like the york anti-crime unit for their plainclothes. you give these groups a little bit of rope. you are police and the worst of the worst. you are not talking about your daily civilian. and so you do need these units. we got rid of them in new york we saw the consequences of it. now, on the other hand you have five members of this unit some of them five years, three years every case they've been involved in will be under review right
2:09 pm
now. the question is where it was the leadership? where's the sergeant in that unit in the middle of all this taking place? so if there is a real issue with the unit i have no problem disbanding it. if this is just at the heat of the moment and not waiting until there's a full review to see what the problem is, then they maybe create more chaos. that goes back to my initial point that as a result of this because of what these five officers did they can disbanded but in general law enforcement will step back. they will step back and be cautious even though these officers don't speak that 95 or 96% of men and women of the badge. >> one question i had, i don't understand why the officers were so whipped up. the police officers are incredibly disciplined. they take their time, they resist the temptation to hit

2:12 pm
we should get to the facts on them. but it would be unfair of leadership. because with these units they give them some rope to go into these communities. it doesn't mean they break protocol or anything for the way they conduct themselves is not the typical way. they are going against gang bangers. you can't tell cops to go into that and then punish them for it. if there is been illegal content going on in their and their abusing members of the public and it is systemic gifted to spend the unit and start all over. >> aren't lawrence and jones, thank you very much for joining us, giving us a little of your time as you get ready for your show breaking news coverage in our cross-country. that of course at 10:00 p.m. eastern we are grateful for your insights and time before you show tonight, we appreciate it. coming up the white house stonewalls the public about biden's classified documents, a new twist. borges' son hunter have to do with it? a new connection revealed, next.
