charles. >> reporter: good morning. the memphis police department announced on saturday it permanently deactivated what is known as the scorpion unit, a street crime task force at least include some of the officers involved in the brutal beating of 29-year-old tyre nichols after a supposed traffic stop on january 7th, that they say led to nichols' death. the memphis police department say that the not only the family of nichols approved of but officers. in a statement the officers currently assigned to the unit agree unreservedly the next step. a heinous actions after few cast a cloud on the title scorpion. we need to take proactive is hes for the healing process for all impacted. this follows release of bodycam video shows five officers,

savagely, kicking, punching, pepper spraying seemingly defenseless nichols. all five were fired. they are facing second-degree murder and other offenses related to nichols death. demonstrates called for justice for nichols following the second day of the body cam video. they demanded change, accountability. protests here around in cities across the country have largely been peaceful with the exception of at least three people who were arrested in new york city on friday. 25-year-old woman identified as nicole candy was charged with assaulting a police officer at the protest. was released without bail on jail, on saturday objection from the manhattan district attorney's office. two others remain jailed. including a man who accused destroying a windshield of njpd patrol car. prior to the protests we heard from the nichols family to

please protest in peaceful manner. most have gotten the message except the folks in new york city. on wednesday the funeral for tyre nichols will be held with reverend al sharpton expected to deliver the eulogy. >> thank you, charles. can i note, tyre nichols' mother has been under appreciated. she should be much more appreciated for her restraint, for her dignity. how she has called for peace and i think that is why we haven't seen an eruption of violence. i think any mom would look what happened to her son it would act moment of rage and she harnessed that, knowing what could happen, what and how inflamed people could get. i think she has been a big piece of the puzzle how at least up till now remained peaceful. pete: no doubt. and the major update is what you see on the banner right there, the memphis pd is disbanding the

for many people in america, five black cops beat a black kid somehow that is the problem of white supremacy, that is illustration of racism. i think america has no tolerance for racism. america has a huge appetite to depounce racism. what i think the lack of riots show, america doesn't buy into the nonsense spouted on line on pages of cnn. lawrence was here the other day, said to me, that is nonsense. the way people are talking on line does not reflect brevard county america. people are upset rightfully what happened to tyre nichols they are not willing to indict a entire system with anger and riots. rachel: saraher were on the streets, got initial reaction before people were ingesting some of the propaganda coming from cnn, other sources as you mentioned. and all of them were saying this is about cruelty. this is about not, this is a humanity issue.

now, along with council at first liberty institute, danielle runion. welcome to both of you, lieutenant. tell me what happened, how they told you that you couldn't continue in your career. >> hi, good morning. thanks for having me on. first and foremost these are my opinions, not those of the department of defense and the navy. rachel: of course. >> what happened i submitted my request for religious accommodation for my sincerely held religious values. those were blanketly denied with the 4,000, to 60,000 denials across our force. we submitted our appeals. those were denied. now here we stand continuing our fight for our religious freedoms as protected by the constitution which we swore an oath to defend. rachel: yeah, you applied on religious grounds but now we also know young men in particular are susceptible to myocarditis and joe biden himself declared the pandemic is

over so why is the persecution continuing? >> it is continuing because although the ndaa was approved and the mandate rescinded, it is rescinded really in name only, not in practice. it is still being required by fleet commanders and cos even for sailors to depart ships to go out into town on the port visits. rachel: danielle, you're representing, i believe 4,000 other members of the military, correct? >> that's correct. rachel: how strongly do you feel that you will prevail in this lawsuit? >> we feel very strongly that we're going to prevail. the department of defense has failed to present any evidence to show that they have any justifiable reason for forcing these religious servicemembers to get vaccinated against covid-19. and just as levi was saying, congress directed the secretary of defense to repeal that mandate but as we move forward

we see that the mandate actually continues. commanders are still going to be allowed to consider vaccination status for assignment, deployment and operational decisions. these are the same decisions that have been ruining careers of 4,000 servicemembers that we represent over the past year-and-a-half and our case continues. we're going to put a permanent stop to this. >> you know, levy, it is interesting to me because you applied on a religious exemption. this vaccine has no long-term studies. from a national security point of view that they would want the entire military to be subjected to this. we're starting as i mentioned before to discover other things happening like myocarditis and possibilities of stroke for certain demographics of the population, et cetera. we're still learning what could happen from taking it. yet they're forcing it. what do you say about the national security implications of forced vaccination for the entire military? >> you know i think it has

the task force had some of the officers involved in the beating. we have former nypd detective angel mayes son joins us on set. good to see you, angel. >> good morning. will: what do you think about reaction to disband the unit, scorpion unit tasked with looking at high crime areas dealing with them? supposedly in some type of specialized way. >> i think it was reactionary to disband the unit. i believe if the unit was an issue, probably would have been disbanded before this. while i understand they're going to take into consideration how the public feels, right, given what was seen on the body cam footage i think it is reactionary. will: it is possible, to your point, it is possible we look back on it now see other instances that my occurred in the scorpion unit but when you get rid of these units, it is easy to say these units are more aggressive, whatever it may be, what is the implications within the community when you start getting rid of these kind of units? >> so the nypd got rid of the

street crime unit a couple years ago. i worked on anti-crime policing in the bronx. the community wants you out there to be aggressive. you can be aggressive and fair. the two are not mutually exclusive. when you're interactive, looking for guns, robbery patterns, treat people with dignity and respect. will: we have five officers who lost all semblance of dignity and respect. the question, angel, are these five bad officers are they indicative something going on inside of that unit or units like them and then, to carry it on as the argument is mading are they indicative of a problem in policing? >> what this is the direct result of is all the defund the police stuff, right? you have the war on police in this country is on fire, right? you have cops who don't want to stay. you have experienced officers that could have been on that scene, could have been in the unit maybe could have prevented it from happening.
