tv Americas Newsroom FOX News February 2, 2023 6:00am-7:00am PST
6:00 am
>> beautiful sunrise out west. join me tomorrow at the big biscuit in kansas as "fox & friends" broadcasts live. a lot of chiefs fans will be there. >> stay within yourself. >> bill: good morning. here we go. we have a grim snapshot of america. fox news polling on the country's direction. this is what you are saying. you are saying that an overwhelming number are dissatisfied. that number is at 73%. i guess it could go higher. i don't want to see it. good morning, everybody. thursday, you made it this far. i'm bill hemmer. >> dana: i'm dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." the number is interesting. you talk about how there is not a lot of bipartisan agreement in the country. that's a pretty high number 73%.
6:01 am
if you dig into it more you see people are dissatisfied for different reasons. >> bill: i didn't see a lot of good news in the polling. came out late last night. also with regard to the president. job performance at 54% disapproval. he has that to chew on. dysfunctional family. we asked whether or not how would you characterize the government today? a lot of people saw it that way as dysfunctional government. however, we had larry kudlow on two days ago and he painted a slightly rosier picture than we expected. >> dana: for the economy and the white house is counting on that and the outgoing chef of staff ron klain pointed to that as he was leaving. the biden plan is working. if there is a recession they expect it to be mild. if you are dealing with that and somebody who has dipped into your 401k trying to make ends meet it doesn't feel that way. the president's number at 45% is about what it was the end of
6:02 am
december. they think they've had some good headlines in january with the economy. but the document issue might be holding him right around there at 45%. >> bill: we'll get to that. >> dana: mentioned the documents. the f.b.i. searching the president's delaware beach house for 3 1/2 hours yesterday. they did not find anything marked classified. they did remove some materials for further review. we don't know what those materials are. it is putting more pressure on the white house. ron klain i just mentioned says the president has nothing to hide. >> the president has been very clear. working through his lawyers with the f.b.i. to make all of his residences available. they were able to search through every single inch and room and drawer of his home in wilmington and the beach house and they've done that. we've been surprised by this in terms of these documents somehow winding up in his files. the most important thing i think
6:03 am
is we've cooperated fully with the justice department and with the national archives. >> dana: team fox coverage. andy mccarthy is on deck with reaction. mark meredith is at the white house this morning. >> the president's legal team says it is being transparent about the ongoing investigation into these document being found in improper places. there are still so many questions about the timeline of events here and the other big question could there be more documents out there from the president's previous government gigs? on wednesday it was the f.b.i. searching the president's beach home in delaware. the president's lawyer says no classified materials were found. some handwritten notes dating back to the obama years were removed for review. interesting the white house counsel's office held this impromptu press conference outside the west wing after the search. officials refused to say how many documents have been recovered so far or whether or not more searches are in the works. >> the president has been fully
6:04 am
cooperative and his team to be cooperative. he believes in giving the justice department space to conduct a thorough review and do it efficiently. >> the president was at capitol hill for the national prayer breakfast. he talked about working with house republicans and the speaker. lawmakers are saying they want to know a lot more going on behind the scenes with these documents. >> there needs to be transparency within the intelligence community to know exact will i what we're dealing with. i don't think they should hide behind whatever the justice department is telling them to say with the meetings with the intelligence committees. >> bill: we expect to see the president on camera a few times today. dana want to mention there is another meeting watching with the congressional black caucus talking about police reform in the wake of nichols death in memphis. that happens this afternoon. >> bill: andy mccarthy picks up where he left off yesterday. good morning, andy. you are in chicago today. you write the f.b.i. finally
6:05 am
searches biden's rehoboth beach home. what took so long? yesterday was the first day on the job for the new special counsel robert hur. does that give us a clue as to why they went to the house then? >> i think so, bill. i also think he is in a no-win situation there in the sense that common sense says if you give people three months notice that you may be searching a place, you are not apt to find much, if anything that's incriminating. you can say from the point of view from the prosecutor. those are things that should have been done but haven't and he would be deeply criticized and rightly so if they didn't check that box. i think they had to conduct this search. it is not surprising that they may not have found much. i do think it is important that
6:06 am
we have to distinguish here. they say there was no classified information that came out of there but that they took notes. what i would suggest is what we ought to be more precise in saying that they didn't find any documents that had classification markings on them, but if those notes are reflective of classified briefings, that is classified information and that's why they have to investigate. it is probably why they took it. >> dana: in another development overnight i woke up to it is hunter biden's lawyers have now -- they have a different tactic they'll take. one, they are saying yes, the laptop was hunter biden's but now accusing various people of weaponizing that document. i wonder if you could take a look at call for number five. the media down playing hunter biden's laptop when she said it wasn't real. >> we're supposed to believe that hunter biden in a drunken stupor dropped off his laptop.
6:07 am
>> when you trow i to figure out the specifics of whether that meeting email for example is real in the midst of this, do you think stuff like that could have been planted in there and be completely fake? >> for all we know, these emails are made up or maybe some are real and others fakes, we don't know. >> dana: the "new york post" had the story, right? here is the "new york post" cover this morning. it's mine. okay. so there is lots of different threads to pull on the story. from the legal perspective what do you think about that tactic now? >> i say two things. first, i don't think that part of the story has changed since the first days two years ago. a lot of us were noting that in context, the emails and documents that were coming out of that laptop seemed to be authentic and nobody in the biden camp was coming out and saying it was made up or was fake. they had some people from the
6:08 am
intelligence community trying to float that as an idea but never any backup to it. it always seemed to be authentic. secondly, i continue to think that hunter biden and all these stories about him and how they got the laptop and whether we should be investigating the store owner and all that stuff, that's a side show. the important thing here is not his criminal liability, the important thing here has always been national security. the question is, why is it that rogue anti-american and corrupt regimes when barack obama as president put joe biden in a point man role to those regimes they thought it was expedient and in their interest to pay millions of dollars to hunter biden and to the biden family? that's the issue. what did they think they were buying? hunter biden is a side show. >> bill: thank you for that. his lawyers are pushing for
6:09 am
felonies against the guy who owned the store for going into the laptop and a few others like rudy giuliani. we'll see whether or not it is successful. next week on tuesday a big state of the union address. "wall street journal" a bit of a preview. democrats deep in the swamp is the name of the piece. joe biden will say next week don't worry, it's all good. i don't believe in the tooth fairy but i believe in the swamp. sprawling and on a corrupt binge. >> dana: will it add to the polls. we have another part of our fox poll that came in last night. what best describes america today? 81% of us think we're like a dysfunctional family. as most families are if we're being honest. >> bill: one way they could get that dysfunctional number down is get a deal in the debt ceiling.
6:10 am
kevin mccarthy met with the president yesterday. >> dana: they were both optimistic. >> bill: they will get the debt increase if they can negotiate on spending and avoid some dirty laundry aired in washington, d.c. stay tuned. >> dana: there was a high-speed car chase in the rio grande valley. the driver taking off with a 2-year-old child inside. car is shown peeling out and speeding away. eluded capture. nearly 2500 migrants are slipping into the country each day. bill melugin is live in mission, texas with the details. hi, bill. >> good morning to you. that's right. every single morning and every night out here at the border there is a constant game of cat and mouse between law enforcement and illegal immigrants looking to evade and don't want to turn themselves in. the video we shot as we embedded with texas dps in mission, texas
6:11 am
starting with a body cam going after runners in the brush looking to evade. they take several migrants down and arrest them and take them into custody and switch to our video where you can see the groups of migrants. it is predominantly single adult men either from mexico or northern triangle countries of honduras, guatemala and el salvador. in january alone they recorded at least 48,000 known gotaways at our southern border. these law enforcement officials and border patrol are trying to get that number down. the video we shot here in mission we encountered this group of three chinese nationals who had just crossed illegally. each one of them said they paid $35,000 each to a cartel to be smuggled into the united states. they came over on a raft and those smuggling organizations typically charge chinese the most.
6:12 am
they consider them exotics and charge them a lot more than people from central or south america. last year more than 170 countries showed up at our southern border and the wild pursuit. texas dps dash kam video in the rio grande valley chasing a human smuggler. locals have to deal with this day in and day out. that trooper engaged in this very high speed chase in bad weather. the driver loses control of that vehicle multiple times on the wet roads. goes driving off onto dirt roads. you mentioned there was a 2-year-old child in that car with the other migrants. eventually they go off road and all bail out. if we can pull up this video we'll show the moment when they bail out. texas dps goes into the brush, arrest the driver and take into custody four illegal immigrants who were in that vehicle including the 2-year-old child. the mug shot, a convicted child sex predator arrested in border
6:13 am
patrol yuma, arizona center. he has a 2016 conviction for sexual assault of a child out of illinois. back out here live border patrol in tucson, arizona report they recently arrested two convicted felons more than 30 miles inland from the border. >> dana: stay in touch today. thank you. the house judiciary committee held a fiery hearing on the border crisis drilling down on the failed policies that have worsened the situation. >> since president biden took office u.s. customs and border protection officials have en counted over 4.5 million illegal aliens. we'll say it again today. the number is disastrous. >> dana: republican from louisiana mike johnson is on deck here. >> we continue the trajectory we're on in the next ten years
6:14 am
we'll spend $8 trillion just on interest. that's why you have inflation. america's strength. >> bill: that's kevin mccarthy at the white house kicking off what's expected to be a long negotiation with the president on the debt limit. we mentioned this a moment ago. can they find common ground? >> dana: a new white house rule on so-called green investing drawing pushback from both parties. critics say it threatens the retirements of more than 50 million americans. joe manchin and mike braun are here to talk about that and more. >> bill: a shocking story from new jersey. a council woman shot and killed outside her home. what we have learned so far., we elbow grease, you can do just about anything. thanks, dad. that's right, robert. and it's never too early to learn you could save with america's number one motorcycle insurer. that's right, jamie. but it's not just about savings. it's about the friends we make along the way. you said it, flo. and don't forget to floss before you brush.
6:15 am
6:20 am
council woman was found shot and killed outside her own home. authorities are reportedly treating her death as a homicide and searching for suspects and a motive. nate foye is live in new jersey with the latest. hi, nate. >> just a tragic story with a lot of unanswered questions. here is what we know this morning. the council woman was driving outside her home in this neighborhood sometime just after 7:00 p.m. she was shot while driving multiple times. police got the call at 7:22. when they arrived on scene she was pronounced dead. look at this picture of her. the 30-year-old republican council woman won an upset victory for her seat back in 2021. multiple media outlets are reporting that she was the intended target of this shooting. fox news hasn't been able to verify that. the mayor of the town released a statement about this writing as a community we're shocked and saddened at the loss of eunice. she was a dedicated member of
6:21 am
our council truly committed to serving all of our residents. the fact she was taken from us by a criminal act makes this incidental the more horrifying. the next video. we spoke with police officers when we arrived on scene 45 minutes ago and tell us this is a nice neighborhood and not the sort of place where you would expect something like this to happen. back out here live they tell us we're expecting a press conference at 11:00 a.m. you mentioned no motive, no suspects. those are questions we'll be asking the prosecutors office. send it back to you. >> dana: bright young woman shot down in front of her home. thank you. >> bill: 21 past now to the new fight to take politics out of your 401k. the biden administration has an environment, social and governance rule, esg, for retirement plans that went into effect just this week and allows wall street base investments on issues other than profits. every republican senator and
6:22 am
democrat senator joe manchin are introducing a bill to try to scrap that biden rule once and for all. senator manchin and republican colleague mike braun out of indiana with me now. good morning. take a picture of this, a democrat and republican coming together on an issue. nice to see you. >> we're friends. >> friends to boot. >> bill: ohio is the only thing that separates you too geographically. i don't know if you can stop it, but can you? >> let me tell you one thing. mike and i were talking this morning about this. he took part in this legislation and proud to be a partner. it's the right thing to do. when you start making evaluations on the environmental impacts we all have a responsibility and we've done a good job on that. reduced emissions by more than any other country in the free world so with that being said, then why don't evaluate the risk and ask europe what's happened to them? ask germany what happened to their economy?
6:23 am
look what putin did to weaponize energy. it should be evaluated the same as anything else. the fallout would be if you try to get rid of fossil before we have anything to replace it, you will damage our economy and make our country much weaker. that's what i've been fighting for energy security. geopolitical risks should be evaluated as much as this. >> bill: the problem it makes too much sense. senator braun, when you talk about a filed you shallary when it comes to investing they are supposed to do the right thing on behalf of investors. if you have programs that are related to the environment or government and they out perform other markets fine, go for it. but if they underperform you are not living up to your own fiduciary ability for your investors. >> it's a navigation. a five year study 2 1/2% difference in the return on these funds where you are
6:24 am
emphasizing esg versus what's the best return. it affects 152 million americans in their retirement 401ks. about 12 trillion. do the math. 2 1/2% on 12 trillion you should not be burdened with trying to push any political agenda where you will impact the hard earnings that you give to someone else in trust that you are going to make the right decision. to me it's shameful and heavy overreach you get from the federal government. executive branch in this case, department of labor. this is our only tool congressional review act, a challenge to say back off. i did it with the vaccine mandate that was going to force you to get a vaccine. joe joined on that as well. common sense. government gone wild. >> real quickly if i could mention one thing. they are talking about trying to accelerate getting rid of fossil. the market will tell you when
6:25 am
there is something to replace the fossil and horsepower that comes from the coal, gas and oil we do cleaner than anywhere in the world. the market will move when the market is ready to move and replace it. we're not ready yet. for the administration to accelerate it before economy in jeopardy. >> bill: when you reflect on west virginia. you have the debt fight. i don't know what comes of it. kevin mccarthy yesterday is what he said at the white house when he left the meeting with the president. >> so now is a moment in time we've got five more months. i just walked out having an hour conversation with this president that i tell you in perspective was a good conversation. no agreements, no promises except we'll continue this conversation. >> bill: that was from yesterday. this is from this morning at the prayer breakfast with the president. this is what he said about the meeting. >> president biden: i said kevin and i are going to do, not a joke. we had a good meeting yesterday. i think we have to do it across
6:26 am
the board. doesn't mean we'll agree and fight like hell but let's treat each other with respect. >> bill: now, will we live up to that, right? fox polling finds republicans and democrats both believe that they are extremely or very concerned about political division. you are at 68%. senator braun, go first. how will it end up? >> in the time i've been here, roughly four years, look at the magnitude. $18 trillion debt. when i got here. now we're 31. this is no laughing matter. interest rates have gone up 4%, start doing the math on $31 trillion. we have to address it. it takes political will to do it. i'm on the budget committee which we don't use anymore or don't use regular order. that's the way it used to work. flesh it out in committees not get up to the thresholds where they use deadlines to force whatever the political agenda
6:27 am
is. it has been on both sides. this debt is accumulated over a long period of time. it just has gotten way out of control. >> on the whole thing on the debt thing first of all i know both men. kevin is most reasonable taking the approach can't we recognize 31 trillion is unmanageable and we're writing checks our children and grandchildren can't catch. you put those two in a room and i knew they could get along. i'm hopeful it will work out without any drama or theatrics. the bottom line is mike said it was 18 million when he came in. 13 trillion of debt when i came on board. it continues to grow. i've been told if we just did our job on time and why won't we look at this? get the budget done. when the president gives the state of the state of address like governors. when that happens you can put your budget there and they work towards that. if we get ours done on
6:28 am
september 30th we could reduce the spending by as much as 5 to 10% across the board doing our job on time. shouldn't we look at that? >> bill: senators, thank you both for coming on today and doing it together as a pair. i think if america saw more of this it might have more faith in what is happening on the hill and washington, d.c. throughout. senator manchin and senator braun, thank you for your time today and we'll be in contact soon again. >> absolutely. >> dana: new details in the idaho murder investigation. reports say the f.b.i. lost track of quadruple murder suspect bryan kohberger for hours during his cross-country trip from washington to pennsylvania and how they eventually tracked him down. get ready. beyonce announcing her first solo tour since 2016. the demand for seats is already very high. how will ticketmaster handle this one?

>> bill: new york city mayor eric adams got his hands full facing rising backlash over immigration and crime. new quinnipiac poll shows that 70% of new york city voters say the migrant influx is a crisis as more than 43,000 migrants have arrived in the city since last spring. meanwhile 39% of new yorkers say they feel less safe than they did a year ago. big apple saw a 22% rise in major crime in 2022. overall just 37% approve of the -- wow, 37% did not catch that one of the job that adams is doing. 43% disapprove. work to do on those numbers. see how he does. >> dana: i'm sure he is frustrated thinking if the president of the united states, fellow democrat, was helping him out a little more and acknowledging his concerns, maybe his numbers wouldn't be so bad.
6:35 am
>> bill: just to emphasize this. is the migrant influx a crisis for new york city is the way the question was asked. quinnipiac 70% say yes. new yorkers aren't stupid and they see the headlines and the folks getting off the buses every day and see the demands now on behalf of the men who are migrants where they are being told to live or be housed temporary and they're saying we aren't going to have that. >> dana: they did have to go. they have now vacated the hotel. interesting washington, d.c. doesn't seem to be understanding what new yorkers are feeling. watch this from the border hearing yesterday. >> they're encouraging illegal immigration, inviting people to come here. >> we sat down with the secretary and gave him a 16-point action plan to share to look at what we thought were common scenes human tear and national security objectives built within it. never heard back.
6:36 am
i asked the secretary where the plan was and what they would do with it. he asked me what plan? >> an absolute dereliction of duty. >> dana: first hearing on the border crisis yesterday. house republicans slamming the administration. louisiana republican mike johnson joins us now and was in the hearing. play what some of the democrats were saying yesterday. >> colleagues on the other side of the aisle seem to have called this hearing to really promote disinformation. >> we alt is, there is no invasion, no hoards of innovators. our borders are not being overrun by dangerous criminals. >> the fentanyl crisis is not happening where you all are claiming it's happening. >> this hearing is titled biden's border crisis. that is completely wrong. >> dana: did you think you were on the same planet yesterday?
6:37 am
>> it is bizarre world. the democrats are denying the basic facts that every single american now knows, including the mayor of new york city and everyone else. since joe biden took office just in two years we've had 4.5 million illegal aliens come across that southwest border. that doesn't count the 1.1 million known gotaways. the administration has released 1.7 million of those illegals into our american communities. not just new york city but all over the country. everybody can see that. because they have laid out the welcome mat the average crossing, illegal aliens is 8,100 people a day. not a sustainable trajectory and no longer a crisis but a legitimate catastrophe and it is awful that they won't acknowledge the facts. >> dana: a pattern is very strange. when i worked in d.c. i really moved -- loved my time there.
6:38 am
a lot of people went to d.c. to solve problems. a strange pattern where people like congressman henry gay war down in texas says he doesn't get his calls return. your witness says no one called me back. nobody calls back bill melugin. who are these taxpayer-funded people who are working for the government who aren't doing basic constituent or media service? >> in is a great question. the reason we're having the hearings. god bless bill melugin for highlighting this and showing the american people the video over two years. without fox news the mainstream media could have covered it up and that's what the administration is trying to do. they are under orders not to respond to the sheriff of cochise county and his colleagues and all the people in charge of the enforcement of the border. it is their actions that have brought about this catastrophe.
6:39 am
they have made it nearly impossible with executive orders straight from the white house itself and from mayokas at dhs to arrest and detain and to return illegals to where they came from. instead as i noted they are releasing them into the country. this is a deliberate effort. it is their agenda and strategy. the reason we're having these hearings is to lay this bare for the american people to evaluate. we haven't been able to do that for the last two years because we were in minority. republican majority will have a series of hearings to show the facts and let the american people evaluate for themselves how disastrous this is. >> dana: from the fox poll last night we asked a question what do you think of the president's job approval on border security? and 61% disapprove. but the white house is saying look, the president has good numbers, he has had -- the economy looks good. not a number they seemed concerned about. is there a way for you to make them be concerned about it? >> we'll continue the drumbeat
6:40 am
and roll out the facts and let the people see what is happening. the reason knows numbers are as high as they are, the facts have been buried. democrat colleagues are in denial and mainstream media is on board with that narrative. the facts are stubborn things as john adams said and we'll continue to deliver those and ultimately lead to some results and consequences and changes in policy that we have to do. we cannot maintain a country if we don't have a border. we don't have sovereignty or security. >> dana: good to have you on the show. thank you. >> bill: it is serious. 20 before the hour. bob woodward calling out his employer, the "washington post." why he says the paper did a poor job of vetting the steele dossier. college board is revising a controversial african-american studies course. the group standing down amid outrage from parents in florida as the governor there makes his thoughts quite clear. >> we will never surrender to the woke mob. florida is where woke goes to die.
