>> sandra: fox news alert, a quick look at the white house, former president bill clinton is there. he is right now speaking, he is there at the invitation of current president joe biden. he's playing host to the former president to mark the 30th anniversary of the family and medical leave act. this, of course, was the first piece of legislation that the 42nd president signed into law after taking office back in 1993. bill clinton is 76 years old now, and john, this is not clinton's first trip to the biden white house. he did join president biden at the white house in may for a lunch of last year, but he is speaking live and we just wanted to sort of dip in and show our viewers that this was happening, and bill clinton is going to continue speaking for another couple minutes at the white house. john. >> john: i bet that he finds it quite familiar there, let's see how long it takes him to walk out the front door. >> sandra: the crowd seems to be enjoying his remarks that were supposed to go 2 to 3 minutes,
11:49 am
according to notes from the white house. he has exceeded that so far. >> john: gee, a big surprise. i covered the last two years of his presidency, it was an interesting ride. a college board meant to prepare high school students for the next level is doing an about face on the curriculum for one a.p. course after florida governor ron desantis complained of woke content. phil keating is live in miami and the latest on this. criticism of the governor only seems to be getting louder about this. >> absolutely, john. just yesterday, last night in fact, on the first day of black history month one of the members of the miami-dade black advisory group called him a racist over all of this, and said the governor is using black floridians as political footballs. this is just the latest salvo by ron desantis against what he calls the woke agenda, and one example, black queer theory, he called indoctrination, not
11:50 am
education in the a.p. african american studies course. college board has released the 238 page outline of the course, revised curriculum, material on africa, slavery, reconstruction and the civil rights movement remains essentially the same. but some of the subject matter that is now gone includes critical race theory, black feminism and the black lives matter movement making that optional versus mandatory. >> the issue is an we have guidelines and standards in florida, we want education not indoctrination. if you fall on the side of indoctrination, we are going to decline. if it's education, we will do. >> florida black leaders are heavily criticizing desantis, some calling him a racist as i mentioned. civil rights attorney ben crump is threatening to file lawsuits on behalf of three high school students. >> by rejecting the african american history pilot program, ron desantis has clearly demonstrated that he wants to dictate whose story does and
11:51 am
doesn't belong. >> gavin newsom tweeted out this critique, and yet david coleman the head of the college board says we cannot look to statements of political leaders, i call b.s. you are merely a puppet of ron desantis. high school students take these advance placement courses to prove their academic moxie, and it's being taught at 60 high schools nationwide. >> sandra: the statement from newsom sounds like a national campaign type of statement. >> both are rumored to be eyeing for 2024. it could be newsom versus desantis, you never know. >> john: interesting couple of years, thanks, phil. >> sandra: federal reserve hiking interest rates to rein in high inflation, but at what cost. layoffs in the u.s. hit more than 102,000 in january, according to a brand-new report
11:52 am
and that is a 440% increase from the same time last year, and the highest that it's been since 2009. our next guest ran one of america's biggest stores and warns we may be in a world of hurt if the white house does not act soon. bring in bill simon, former walmart ceo and president. your perspective on the economy means a lot. you've seen a lot. you know the behavior of the consumer. what should we make of what we are seeing right now coming off this recent report, especially that 64% of the country is living paycheck to paycheck. >> well, it's good to be with you, sandra. the point i was trying to make was that inflation is really what we should be focused on right now. there's a lot of discussion about recession and whether we are going to be in recession or in a recession or not, but the real issue every day americans are facing is inflation. it hurts 100% of the people, not just a small percentage of the
11:53 am
people, particularly food inflation and lodging, rent inflation, things that have been devastating to the consumer. and it's not the white house, it's a combination of the fed and policy makers and congress and in fact, businesses, corporations because we are in this loop that we can't seem to get out of. high inflation is really pushing employers to increase wages at an accelerated rate. walmart announced a 17% increase in their starting wage, delta pilots are up 25%, the rail workers got a 25% increase. all that in response to inflation adds, you know, more demand and more price, more wage inflation, which puts upward appreciate on pricing and on goss the loop. unless that loop is interrupted, it's going to be difficult for us to recover. >> sandra: you just mentioned the wage increases at walmart, minimum wage, $14 per hour, up from $12 per hour. the average hourly earnings,
11:54 am
17.50 up from $17 per hour. 340,000 store workers impacted. in a perfect world, wage increases would be great but if it's gobbled up by inflation it does not mean much to the workers, and only at the cost of the business that's trying to retain them. charles payne joined us last hour, and to your point about needing to focus on inflation, he says it's getting forgotten about. we are still living through four decade high inflation, listen. >> we have forgotten about inflation in this country. no one knew about the sting of inflation, so now we talk about it coming down, whether it's coming down because of people are running out of money, the federal reserve is trying to do their job and slow it down, when we run out of money, the alternative is going to be maybe a recession. >> sandra: to his point about we had forgotten about it, we had not experienced the price hikes in so long, there they came unnecessarily due to, arguably,
11:55 am
a lot of the policies enacted right away when the new white house stepped in. ok, our team pulled this, because your piece, bill, makes the point that the biden white house has to act soon or we could be in a really dire situation later this year or into the next year. but this is what this white house is saying about the economy right now. listen. >> we are stronger economically than we have been in history. >> our economy, our labor marked is uniquely strong. >> the economy is growing, it is strong, it is creating jobs. >> yes, our economy is strong as hell. >> sandra: so they were saying all this at some of the highest points of inflation, some of the worst points for the economy in the past few months. do you have any confidence they'll tackle this? >> they need to go to the grocery store with average people and go pay their rent and go pay their gas bill and ask them how they are doing at the end of the year and then see what the statements sound like. because middle america is not --
11:56 am
is not doing well, they are not handling the food price increases that are now over 20% two-year stack basis. not handling the rent availability and increases out there. and it's not just the administration that has to deal with it, but i think first you have to admit you have a problem before you can handle it. congress has to act, and we have to -- the fed has to continue with as unpleasant as it might be with the tightening of the money supply in order to get things straightened out. >> sandra: bill, if i may, before i let you go, you just referenced this debate that continues to happen whether or not we are in a recession, entering recession, will there be one at all. that seems to be a debate even though there were dire forecasts for this year to see a deep recession. so where do you fall? >> i don't think it matters to be honest with you. you know, if we go into a recession, we have never had a full employment recession in this country, and we have full employment now or close to it.
11:57 am
so if we do go into a recession, likely will be shallow and short. but if we can't get control of inflation, particularly food and rent inflation, then our economy will sort of -- the consumer, which is two-thirds of the engine of our economy, will falter and then we could fall into something that makes a short shallow recession seem like a day, a walk in the park. >> sandra: really interesting, and this coming off also the report we just covered last hour, more and more people are tapping their 401(k) for hardship withdrawals, and that, too, is not a great sign. most should hold off as long as possible, right, bill? appreciate you joining us on that. really interesting perspective. thank you. >> thank you. >> john: sandra, a rodent rivalry making this groundhog day a little complicated. nick has that story live from fox weather. nick, what's going on? >> that's right, john. can you believe it we have

punxsutawney phil that makes his prediction every year and he does that at about a 40% success rate. meanwhile, staten island chuck does it at about an 80% rate. there he is right there, coming out of his palatial estate at the staten island zoo, he did not see his shadow, and that means an early spring. phil said we would have six more weeks of winter. who is correct? phil may be in the short-term. you can see here, it is going to be cold. some 40 million americans under a wind chill warning as we head into this weekend. so tomorrow morning through saturday we are talking about much of new england dealing with temperatures like this. boston 25 below, you don't even want to know what it's going to feel like in bangor, maine. 40 below, burlington 30 below, and here in new york, a couple

degrees below 0, and frostbite can happen in 30 minutes in as quickly as five minutes like it will be there, that will be the frostbite time in northern maine. so make sure you are bundled up if you have to go outside for anything. so, that's the short-term, john. in the long-term, though, i think staten island chuck may end up winning this, because after this cold snap it's going to be really warm into next week. we are talking about highs along the east coast and the northeast and new york surging into the 50s, maybe even close to 60°. i don't know about you, john, i don't know if you are a warm weather guy or cold weather guy, i like the warm stuff so i'm hoping chuck is correct. >> john: i grew up in canada and the first place i moved to when i came to the united states was miami. so -- that will tell you where i am with that. all right. thanks for the forecast, we'll see who is right.
12:00 pm
sandra, there would poor ol staten island chuck did not get dropped this week. >> sandra: it's going to get cold before it breaks up, and breaking news, my spring bulbs started popping out of the ground. i have to protect them. >> john: put little furry mittens or a touque over them. i'm john >> martha: good afternoon. i'm martha maccallum. ahead on "the story," trey gowdy joins us on hunter biden's strategy around the laptop that republicans have vowed to get to the bottom of. first, vladimir putin making a major speech to his public for the first time since september, several months ago. russia says that they're at a decisive moment in this war. putin commemorating russia's victory against the nazis in
