many of the folks here at fox will be hearing red today. it is not for the chiefs even though we love them. in honor of wear red day to support american heart association, to learn more or donate visit go red for women.org. the number one killer for women in the country. >> so long from kansas city, everybody. >> have a good weekend. >> bill: good morning. we've a ton to get to including this. the jobs report is out a moment ago for january. it is stunningly strong despite repeated interest rate hikes by the fed. u.s. employers adding 517,000 jobs. they were only expecting 185,000. unemployment rate dropping to bit to 3.4. more coming up with the money team to parse the language on that big story. we go to the sky and beijing and big sky country suspected chinese spy balloon spotted
6:01 am
hovering over montana. there is a mystery out there. i'm bill hemmer. i love your red. you got to pin on. >> dana: way to represent. i'm dana perino. this is "america's newsroom." the communist eye in the sky. the ball on does not pose a threat moving well above air traffic commercial air traffic. officials are advising the president not to shoot it down over concerns that falling debris from this balloon could hurt people on the ground. >> bill: the balloon entered u.s. airspace a couple of days ago and flew east into montana. not clear what it was doing there. the state is home to 1 of 3 u.s. air force bases with intercontinental ballistic missiles. >> dana: discovery days before blinken is set to visit beijing. china said it is looking into
6:02 am
the balloon but general jack keane says he is not buying that. >> what we do know is they've done this before. we know it's a spy balloon. it is going to depart at some time. we don't want this to happen again. shoot it down on the way home over mountains or when it gets back at sea. we already know who is spying. to me it's about deterrence. >> dana: national security correspondent jennifer griffin has more from the pentagon. >> china claimed responsibility for the balloon claiming it's a civilian air ship used for civilian research mainly meteorologist logical purposes. in other words, a weather balloon. no reaction from the pentagon. this is not the first time beijing has sent a spy balloon. they've done it over hawaii and guam. canada is reporting they may have spotted a second balloon
6:03 am
and are monitoring. the pentagon has been watching this balloon for several days. i'm told the president has not ruled out shooting down the balloon but simply wants to avoid the possibility of american civilian casualties. the balloon is the size of three gray ground buses and has heavy equipment hanging from beneath it. a senior defense official told reporters the chinese surveillance balloon appears to have been sent by beijing to spy on sensitive sites in montana. 1 of 3 u.s. bases where the u.s. houses its nuclear missile silos. >> balloon is currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and doesn't present a military or physical threat to people on the ground. instances of this kind of balloon activity have been observed previously over the past several years. once the balloon was detected the u.s. government acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information. >> u.s. military scrambled f-22
6:04 am
fighter jets wednesday and closed the billings, montana airport ordering a ground stoppage in case they shot the balloon down. the president was briefed about his options. president biden was advised by military chiefs about the possibility for civilian casualties if they were to shoot the balloon down over the continental u.s. adding the surveillance balloon does not provide the chinese government with more intelligence than it can glean from existing low orbit satellites. u.s. officials have mitigated the ability for this balloon to survey sites blocking it from doing so and they're learning a lot by monitoring the balloon. >> dana: a lot of people are wondering why the administration wouldn't have shot it out of the sky immediately especially if it was over an uninhabited mountain areas in montana. >> from the discussions i've had.
6:05 am
there is no way given the size of this thing the potential debris field that even in areas that you think are uninhabited it wasn't clear they could take a shot and avoid any civilian casualties. so i think that is the consideration. they have not ruled out shooting it down eventually but there are other ways they may be able to deal with it. they have other options and i think it's a wait and see moment and i think there is a feeling that this was sent by china at a sensitive time ahead of secretary of state blinken's visit to beijing. the defense secretary is meeting with the philippines and got four new bases the u.s. can use to counter china in the region and so this is such a thing that most people assume that the chinese wanted this to be seen. so the question is really what intelligence value did it have? >> bill: it says it was flying higher than commercial aircraft.
6:06 am
if an airplane flies at 38,000 feet? >> 60,000 feet is what i'm told. that's about twice what an airplane flies. some pilots, we're told, were reporting visually being able to see the balloon. you have seen some of the photographs that have been taken but no, 60,000 feet so very much above commercial aircraft travel. >> bill: back to you when we get more. nice to see you from the pentagon. >> dana: there is a china expert we look to sometimes craig singleton. in the "wall street journal" he said we're seeing a return to a tool of the cold war being used in an era of renewed great power competition. and perhaps this turns out to be an inoctoberous situation. however, a great reminder of the fact that maybe we are in a new cold war with china and some people have been saying that, dr. henry kissinger is warning about this as well.
6:07 am
>> bill: something to consider. jack keane said why allow it to pass the alucia islands in alaska? it is about deterrence. reaction from beijing. foreign ministry spokesperson was quoted as saying we're looking into it and verifying the situation. it is not a denial. >> dana: it is not a denial but chat gpt and said give me a diplomatic response here before we get going. >> bill: a former chief information officers under george w. bush is with us. thank you for your time. what do you make of it? >> well, you know, the proof will be in the final findings here but knowing that the military spotted it, surveilled it, surrounded it. video, pictures, sent signal traffic to it they know exact will i what they are dealing
6:08 am
with and not going to tip their hand to china what they will do next with the information they have. the question is as they are floating over not only the videos and surveillance, but are they attempting to intercept either signal intelligence, communication, are they looking at surveilling internet, satellite, low earth orbit satellites as well as cellular technology? this could be truly just a scientific balloon or there could be something more here. they could be collecting information via videos, audio, and also signal intelligence. >> dana: are they looking for information from everyday americans? civilians? or are they looking for targeted military information there probably is a lot in montana. >> china in recent years has deployed a little bit of an all of an above strategy. great question that you request
6:09 am
ask. it could be a combination of where wherever we are geographically almost like turning on a big vacuum cleaner and vacuum up everything you can while you are floating by and we'll sort out the information once we have it later. so think about they are dredging up buckets and buckets of sand hoping they get some valuable sand dollars and gems in the process. so it could be both business, government, and individual data that they are looking for. >> bill: last question. would you have advised to shoot this down? >> i think that's a tough situation. if somebody were asking my opinion based on the type of technology that's on there how heavy and big it is. let's wait and see, watch it navigate and once it is over the ocean or a less populated area based on the winds, then maybe there is an opportunity to force it to land. i don't know if shooting it down is the right -- i'll leave that
6:10 am
to military experts to make that decision but other opportunities to force it to land in a place where it will have the least amount of damage. >> dana: interesting because i'm sure there were people concerned about an escalation with china. this to me seems pretty provocative by the chinese. thank you for being here. lawyers for hunter biden are denying they admitted that that infamous laptop is really his as they call for federal and state prosecutors to open a criminal investigation into rudy giuliani, steve bannon and laptop shop repair man mac isaac. >> well, i think that what it feels like is hunter's legal team needed to run something by the white house and now they are forced to back pedal. this whole thing wreaks of retaliation but it also looks like it is going off half cocked. >> dana: let's understand what
6:11 am
that retaliation might be. mark meredith has the later from the white house. >> a busy morning as you can imagine. later today the president and vice president will be heading up to philly giving remarks about the economy and as bill mentioned off the top of the show reason to celebrate. the latest job report showing 517,000 jobs added last month. unemployment rate still at 3.4%. economy top of mind as the white house conditions its next steps for a possible re-election campaign. polling shows there is an uphill climb going to 2024. registered voters how they would rank the president's job performance so far. 54% disapproved of the president's job performance. the numbers haven't shifted in the last few months despite the latest scandal involving classified documents found at the biden private properties. another factor in all this which may or may not impact re-election plans the on going federal probe into the president's son, hunter. lawyers made major news
6:12 am
yesterday by trying to flip the script now calling for criminal investigations into the people who have been raising questions about hunter biden's business dealings. of course, the infamous laptop. hunter's lawyers say they're claiming the laptop -- not claiming the laptop is his, those lawyers telling fox these letters don't confirm other versions of the so-called laptop and address the conduct of disseminating what they allege to be mr. biden's personal data wherever they claim to have gotten it. hunter's lawyers saying they aren't ready to confirm the laptop is his but believe those raising the questions should be under investigation. while the questions about the laptop linger and they've been lingering since the last campaign we don't know how much of an issue it will be going into 2024. it is not going away. this is an issue that will be in the spotlight and we're still waiting to see whether or not official announcement will be. state of the union next week and conventional thinking not language after that we'll hear about re-election plans.
