"the big saturday show" is up next. we will be back tomorrow at noon eastern. please join us then. hello everyone along with tammy bruce, lisa booth and david welcome to "the big saturday show". the big story tonight. fox news alert u.s. military fighter jack shoots down a chinese spy balloon just as across south carolina into the electric ocean. also tonight flight arriving and departing for airports in the carolinas but president biden
2:01 pm
just revealed to give the military the order to shoot down that balloon three days ago. lucas tomlinson live at the white house, lucas. >> that afternoon guys u.s. air force f-22 that locked from langley air force base in virginia fired a single sidewinder missile to destroy the spy blimp six off the coast of south carolina took late at 3:30 9:00 p.m. in the afternoon. the debris field is stretching . the u.s. navy is sending a salvage crew. president biden spoke moments ago. >> on wednesday when i was briefed on the bloom i ordered the pentagon to shoot it down on wednesday as soon as possible. they decided without doing damage to anyone on the ground, they decided the best time to do that is when it got over water. within the 12-mile limit. the success took it down i want to complement our aviators who did it. we'll have more to report in this little later thank you.
2:02 pm
hugs your sake the recommendation from your national security? once i told them to shoot down progress on wednesday? what's on wednesday they said let's wait until a safest place to do it. >> is notable chinese spy plane was shot down on u.s. territorial waters just 6 miles offshore but of course had been shot down over 12 nautical miles offshore that be international airspace that would've raised a whole different issue. but sean as you can see this as exclusive fox footage is seeing the balloon being shot down from the sky but everyone is very excited about this and getting it on camera guys. what's lucas you're at the pentagon to be there for years but you know what is happening inside closed doors right now. so, two and half hours of his bowling was shot down what is happening at the pentagon? what is happening at the state department? >> is no question u.s. military once you all can to recover the
2:03 pm
spice balloon. now of course it isn't 45 feet of water so it's going to take a salvage teams, u.s. navy divers, a recovery effort. this is not going to be easy. obviously electrical component and saltwater don't have to own a to understand that. certainly the pentagon will be just heard from president biden they did not want the shot down over than any potential danger to americans on the ground but certainly three notable doctors a lot of outrage on capitol hill why did it take a week to do this? this spy balloon first appeared off the coast of alaska, wouldn't u.s. airspace in alaska a week ago exactly a week ago. and then it came up over the continental united states first over montana point of three air force bases of intercontinental nuclear missiles in silos and of course china is building their own silos back in china they want to double their nuclear forces, double the number of
2:04 pm
warheads over the next decade it's very concerning what this chinese spy balloon had already transmitted. insight mission accomplished for beijing that's bible and it already transmitted all its information, took pictures, setback the radio signals all other astronauts efforts were quick this is a david, lucas here's a question not being asked the origin of the balloon. we know the chinese and the russia have ships in the arctic. is there any indication from the pentagon wasn't locked from an arctic or somewhere else? like david, china owns a fleet of these balloons. some of these is much as a few months ago seeing off the coast of hawaii. port harbor, there's lot of military assets in hawaii. twenty spy balloons was just seeing their proportions and other pentagon things falling somewhere in latin america. we don't exactly know where. this is not the first time spy balloons have been deployed but we are told is deployed from
2:05 pm
mainland china for three notable the track of the path the blue took to get to the united states it went around russia but did not fly over russian airspace it flew around russia. then of course trusted u.s. airspace in alaska. >> thank you. this is tammy here. it's interesting a lot of this is guesswork but are you hearing anything about this and possibly being in addition to obviously this is technically low-tech it is a balloon really know is you have mentioned can be transmitted. they don't have to retrieve it to get the information that it is gathering. but, as part of our concern what could have been in the balloon? has there been any discussion about this being a test of how far a villain could get into the interior of the country but the american reaction could be what kind of job that kind of balloon but having very low-tech way?
2:06 pm
sammy officials say there's no question china's testing u.s. resolved. the russian sent launch bear bombers from bases in russia just to test the u.s. response to the last of the f-22 are also based in alaska see their launch times intercept. the fact is bloom was built to launcher mainland, china going to u.s. territory quite possibly be the first time it's shot down a balloon over the united st states. becoming this wall-to-wall. anything to happen often for this question the pentagon is looking the path the balloon took, what kind of transmission, but kind images were sent back. i was also told chinese spy satellites some are not nearly as capable as ours. this balloon could increase the intelligence china receives. a balloon like this 60000 feet with the right cameras think about some telescopes spy satellites imagine that
2:07 pm
telescope up more a balloon pointing down for this could be very high-res. these are simple images prep the u.s. monthly doesn't try to have there's a reason why can't you force airbases with his nuclear missiles present. >> lucas, lisa booth here. i cemented this hovering over nuclear missiles and military bases for an entire week. you talk about the images will what kind of intelligence would try to be able to capture from that? how would that be is in the future? what specifically are they looking for? what's china is building their own missile fleet back in china but for years they didn't do this they only had a couple hundred warheads, mainly on portable missiles. also intermediate range missiles for about 90% of the missile fleet are intermediate range missiles. but china as we speak our building nuclear silos very similar to the minuteman sales in north dakota parts of colorado, nebraska, montana. the u.s. has about 400 of these
2:08 pm
missiles that have been there for decades. they can go a long range. china once the same technology. they're building their own missile silos something as simple as the hatch the cover of the silo this into chinese are going to want. using her from the fbi director on the other than stealing technology from the united states is not an open secret hear from fortune 500 all this idea from corporate leaders. you hear from pentagon brass print anything china could glean or learn something as simple as it nuclear silo how far they are apart, any little thing. certainly there's a big propaganda unofficial site for china that fact this floater throughout a week of u.s. airspace was just shot down when it left the shores off self try this afternoon. >> lucas, david again for two part in this case you talk about control flight ever flies around
2:09 pm
russia there's not just the women of the wind that debunks part of the chinese narrative. to the mapping operations or any talk on the pentagon or the state department because what you have are multiple balloons now and round mapping parts of the globe in high detail. not just military bases about power infrastructure, water treatment plants. we are not talk about information that could affect society if the chinese have it if they are able to weapon isaac. >> that is right. for years the u.s. and russia had a nuclear arms treaty that permitted flights over each other's country. the u.s. had to get out of the skull the open skies had to cancel that because the russian planes are assigned to fly over what you just mentioned non- military flights flying over all kinds of american infras infrastructure. taking pictures and collecting with russia, china, other adversaries give collection to
2:10 pm
take thousands many millions of photos and bring that back home just to see what kind of information we can blame. works quick question here when you hearing rachel confident clues are in terms of gathering the debris? it seems the only analogy i can go to the horrible one it's the one it's in everybody's mind is when a plaintiff plummets from 30,000 feet that leaves a very, very wide and debris field that takes sometimes weeks, months if not years to regather. how long could it take to gather this debris field? again receiving a balloon fall is not your sub baleen balloon at a nice leisurely pace at lot heavy equipment balling really fast. >> that is right as you see from exclusive box video from our cruise on the surfside beach you see all that shiny objects right there. but the actual infrastructure the spyware being shot out of the sky.
2:11 pm
that came down rapidly. there's a reason of the 7-mile debris field. from the balloon itself i will take a long time to come down. very little value there. some turns of 7 miles of debris and 45 feet of water and ocean subbase pieces could be as small as a corridor. recovering this is going to be a major effort what you're likely to glean his saltwater is going to be very. >> lucas amazing works of art they think is our break next defense secretary meant what china was after using that spy balloon. dan hoffman reacts next. okay everyone, our mission is complete balanced nutrition. together we support immune function. supply fuel for immune cells and sustain tissue health. ensure with twenty-five vitamins and minerals, and ensure complete with thirty grams of protein.
2:12 pm
you're in a hurry. i'm off to america's best i heard what you said about not overpaying for glasses. two pairs and a free, quality eye exam starting at just $79.95? the exam alone is worth... 59 bucks. i mean, people deserve breaks, right? yeah, brakes...! rebecca fox news alert. department of defense works to recover the debris from the china spy blue defense secretary admits the balloon was like 12 you write up prc to surveilled strategic sites within the continental united states. cia station chief dan hoffman here to weigh in. a lot of the talk is about the military base and that is the
2:16 pm
obvious. but there are other things to surveilled mapping operation gathered especially from a cia perspective. learn about infrastructure and even roadways, bridges, targets of opportunity. waterways. address that issue this balloon had a long flight path over much of the united states. hugs those are all the key questions you are asking. what i am hoping is a biden administration is going to be asking our intelligence community for a damage assessment. this was a massive chinese intelligence operation. we need to know what information they stole from us. remember they're really good at doing that. they are good at full throttle espionage against us at every turn in this country. targeting our private sector ruthlessly as well as our national security professionals. this is part of the full court press. we're going to need to know exactly what we lost and we
2:17 pm
sought to obtain from us. i suspect we will be doing that both by assessing the technical means the chinese were using but we also need human sources there who can fill us in on what xi jinping's plans and intentions were and what he gained from this. how that might alter his calculus potentially in the strategic confrontation with the united states. >> hey dan, tammy bruce here. we could see this as being, what your thought on the impact of this as a message to our allies as well as our enemies about the weakness invited. we come off of afghanistan the world saw what that was. this weakness, this level of fear the wood not only frighten our allies especially frighten our allies but emboldened our enemies. could something like this simply be used obviously could be multiple fronts, but partly as a
2:18 pm
worldwide propaganda machine in that regard? hugs well, i think certainly china was to win that side of the conflict as well. the concern i would have the question i would like to have answered is why are we destroying this surveillance detective air balloon? is it air balloon conducting intelligence collection now we knew that it was going to be targeting united states well before hand reportedly months ago. and simply had an opportunity to do something about it before it hit u.s. airspace that would've been a good idea. you distract the threat start national security left of boom way out before the threats materialize and cause us harm. that is with this administration failed to do. i'm quite sure be held accountable for that. look, you are right. that's the case of the chinese and violating our territorial integrity. it was there for the world to
2:19 pm
see. were on the spot to do something about it that was after china had sucked out as much that's a bad day for us. >> dan, lisa here. what if this is a distraction for something bigger here. the washington examiner reported these high-altitude balloons arc heat delivery platform for potential nuclear strikes on electrical grid. is this a dry run for something bigger? is this a distraction for something bigger? what are your thoughts on that? >> i always feel like these things are absolutely preparation for the next battle. this is a chess match it china was collecting intelligence on the honor infrastructure and but also on how the united states would react to this sort of threat in our airspace. it was allowed to loiter four days. i'm sure it's not just china but imagine terrorists who might be
2:20 pm
able to put wmd and an air balloon in flight 30, 40, 2000 miles above the ground that may enable them to launch a strike against us at some point. ron assures watching very closely. they've got lots of capabilities as well. this is absolute something have to be concerned about. not just for china but for all of our adversaries. >> picture by craft hat on for just a second period what are we going to be able to learn from the debris if we can recover anything? and follow question to that, are you worried that maybe the debris recovered the information from that is started to throw us off? like the allies are going to land during world war ii. >> i'm pretty sure we were pretty confident we have whatever device the chinese were using with the technology they were using i'm quite sure we have access to that through
2:21 pm
other means. i would have been nice if he could have toted out of our airspace and not destroyed it. but captured it somehow and exploited it but we did not do that. so that's another good question but got more questions to ask that we do answers. sure there be a lot of oversight hearings coming up will get the opportunity to learn more as the days come. >> dan, thank you for your analysis. we will keep covering this as a story develops. coming up will speak to lieutenant colonel continuing coverage of the u.s. take out of a chinese spy balloon. m your gli which means your smart home isn't so smart. sprinkler on. and now i'm sending mixed signals... to your garage. but, if you haven't bundled your home and auto, unpacking this isn't going to be too much fun. so get allstate. this week is your chance to try any - subway footlong for free. like the subway series menu. just buy any footlong in the app, and get one free.

or take us inside what happens on a day like today when you get the order she down this balloon? >> you're like it's one of the targets once i was involved down to shoot ganz over in afghanistan for own balloons or lower altitude you could fly by them at the helicopter and puncturing the smaller rounds like a machine gun. you can control the dissent then you can control better than damage of any of the electronics and the payload underneath as well for the biggest difference here, much larger explosion much greater potential for damage precooked lieutenant, lisa here. why do you think we waited a week to shut down the balloon? >> it is a great question pretty wish i could answer that with any level of certainty. if it were me well before even
2:27 pm
got here. we would not have been exposed to all this risk. i've asked the same question of many people judging the motivation is extremely difficult at this point. we are all owed an answer as americans. >> david hear that? capturing rather than shooting it down we haven't our operators have had high altitude drops from those altitudes. we have balloons capable of going that we have the equipment the casie 135 of them grabbing something, puncture and grab maybe a more controlled dissent. why not use something like that when we went to capture as much of the equipment as possible? >> it certainly would have been preferred. doing that been difficult is not
2:28 pm
as easy as the ones i did but it is certainly possible and preferred. think we should have at least tried it. >> tammy bruce here, sir. we knew this one existed in billings montana gazette told everyone there is a balloon up there, everybody look. we did and you can see it. usually these things we are told were around we don't have mate china has actually sent. we know there is another one in costa rica certainly has been reporting there is one. i guess our system has said yes, we agree that's another one from the chinese communist party. how frequent and how usual are these kinds of low tech/high-tech surveillance in balloons when it comes to whatever possibility they want to use. whether to assign targets or whatever they are doing. does this happen more often?
2:29 pm
is this more frequent that we are aware of? even just one they weren't going to tell us but dart of those local folders revealed to the nation. how often does this happen you think? >> i would dare say not as often and frequent as people think. this one stuck out for a reason because we sought early we saw it coming. we knew what was underneath. paler than the capabilities underneath that balloon that stuck out. i can guarantee if you asked that question got an honest answer that is what they say from norad or the pentagon. i am from montana i know exactly what is around billings and thank god for inquisitive reporter was also a pilots with a very good camera lens who got that picture and went around our state very quickly and with family of mine from great falls and all over western montana. we were concerned and i guarantee you our preference would have been reported on the ground as quickly as possible too. >> god bless montana for.
