under president bush thank you all for being here dan i want to go if you first, brother. what type of intelligence would that drone be gathering and how long do you think this has been going on? >> well those are two really key questions that i think the senate and the house intelligence committees are going to be asking this administration. how many times in the past has china launched these spy balloons? and secondly, what kind of information what kind of intelligence was china able to suck out of the united states? and so we shot down the air balloon and the payload made its way into the ocean. so whether we can actually learn something from that payload or not is an open question. i'm sure we have our sources. who are right now at the ready trying to report on what's going on inside china intelligence service and what they gain from this but these are key questions to be asking and administration

1:07 am
this on adversaries is to cause damage that's why u.s. strike and perceive threats and whether that is immediate or years down the road is irrelevant. significant damage has been done by this aircraft being in the air and this administration initial response to whistle past this threat tells me they're not really prepared to defend us all and i used to do a lot with surveillance like this and people don't understand amount of data that can be captured from that altitude that's at 60, 70,000 feet in the air maybe park it over montana but you can stair in other states. that is a significant amount of intelligence collection that we may never know the real consequences from. lawrence: let's push this forward theresa. so we see them filling in power right here. when do question expect them to attack taiwan because it doesn't seem like there's anyone or any country in their way right now. if china is going to mock us, after putting a drone in our territory and say that we escalate things, i guess the big

question is when do they attack taiwan do we know? >> we don't really know. but the good news is on the united states side and allies side, we have satellites, we have intelligence. and we can monitor and watch. the question is what will the world's response be to what just went on here? if that were a manned airplane that was flying at that altitude in u.s. air space, there's international treaties and accords that say what a response would be to that. you know, so the question is, you know, what's the response going to be? and that response to what happened in the united states with this spy balloon could potentially deter china from gink taiwan so it is a really tricky international conversation, but we do have to have a response if we want any asemblance of them not going into taiwan. >> that's a perfect segue asking

that. less than one in four americans trust our commander in chief congress gets better -- is trusted by just 7% of americans. so the easy take away here is that trust must be earned. and when we watch the way the oval office and capitol hill operates it is hard to get pom-poms out say good job good news is that americans continue to trust small business. 68% and military 64%. those are outliers lj but overall government is very, very scrutinized and looked watt a curious eye right now because they don't think people -- think supreme our self-interest in mind. lawrence: they don't and we just put up another poll up there tony that shows 71% of americans feel like they were heading down the wrong path. even still -- they won't reverse course and for the life of me is it because there wasn't a red wave they feel empowered now? i just don't get it. >> so i don't think that's it. i don't think actual election

results change anything for them. if your ideological you'll always do what you always did because you believe it is right but to joe's point it is not on federal level but abused trust in for example, irs and how it was used against tea party years ago. how the fbi is abuse trust how about on local level where we have prosecutors who don't prosecute crimes. it is the idea that somehow there are rules for us and not for them but on us to do the right they think and to live almost a life of fear but yet there's somehow able to act with impunity that is the thing that has people concerned that is the thing that is massively frustrating and until that ends really nothing gets better. j you know if the republicans can't sell a message with things going so wrong, i mean i just don't see us recovering from this ever gentlemen thank you so much for joining tonight coming up something new on cross country. our first video of the week.
