general keane i'm not sure if you can see this. we have a live shot now of this balloon going down. this balance has been taken down. >> that is great. >> it is falling from the sky. >> reporter: air force f-22 fighter jet shot down the fighter plane that floated down across the u.s. last week. shortly after president biden claimed he wanted to shoot down the balloon earlier was overruled. president biden: on wednesday i briefed on the balloon i ordered the pentagon to shoot it down as soon as possible without doing damage to anyone on the ground. they decided to do that when it got over water, within the 12-mile limit. >> reporter: the 12-mile limit biden mentioned that the coastal states right to claim 12 miles of nautical ocean as their territory. closing the airspace around the balloon, closing air traffic

from wilmington, myrtle beach and charleston airport while the balloon was shot down. militariliry official said it was the first chancer to target over the balloon while flying over water. they could have shot down the balloon over montana but didn't do it out of abundance of caution. chinese responded that u.s. use of force is clear overreaction and serious violation of international practice. china will resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the company concerned and reserves the right to make further responses if necessary. former cia station chief dan hoffman saying other adversaries iran were also watching the situation closely. >> imagine terrorists who might be able to put wmd in an airball loon and fly it 30, 40, 50,000 miles above the ground. maybe that would enable them to launch a strike against us at some point. iran i'm sure is watching very closely. they have got lots of

capabilities as well this is something we have to be concerned about. not just for china but all of our adversaries. >> reporter: the balloon was 60,000 feet above sea level when it was shot down. for reference a typical commercial plane cruising level is 35,000 feet. rachel: interesting. one of the interesting things, that little gag gel he had where joe biden was commented on the balloon, what is your message to china? he never answered that question. i find that very curious as well. >> reporter: definitely. he has his state of the union address on tuesday night. it will be interesting to see how he addresses this. will he tout military succession shooting down the balloon? will he sound the alarm on china threat that house republicans continue to warn about. house speaker kevin mccarthy empaneled a china select committee because he is trying to make this a bipartisan issue which it is. biden administration officials say china is the greatest threat to our national security.

we want to break down for you real quick on the board over here, some of the military sites over the path of this chinese spy balloon. will, i think you're right. first premise of this is a trial, right if we float a balloon, up through alaska, across the country what will the reaction of the united states government actually be? they effectively learned if there was order to shoot it down here, it didn't get shot down until it reached the east coast. if the second aspect was to truly gather intelligence about our nuclear capabilities, our nuclear response, for the chinese that was a success. if you look at all the major air force bases it crossed over, they include all three of the u.s. air force bases that operate, maintain, secure what is known as the minuteman 3, icbms. intercontinental ballistic missiles. one of the try add to deliver capabilities if we need to. will: explain the nuclear triad?

negotiation there. will: talk to former uss cole commander kirk lippold this morning. great to have you on the show. thank you. pete laid out potential surveillance implications of the direction and path of this balloon over united states of america. from a distance, as you look at this, what do you think was the motivation of china. >> good morning, will. thank you for having me on the show. when you look at it, china sent the balloon with the specific intent of gathering intelligence over the united states. similar why we canceled the open skies treaty with russia. when it started coming into the continental united states, we can get into why we probably should have shot it down over alaska, it follow ad very specific path over the intercontinental ballistic missile bases pete pointed out. missouri, b-2 base at whiteman air force base.

it went to the east coast of the united states. it was specifically designed, following a path that allowed it to go over our nuclear capabilities as well as critical infrastructure, thereby endangering the united states and should have been taken out much sooner than what it was. pete: why don't you think it was, commander? what spin could possibly be used -- is it really a safety issue? often times leaders hide behind safety rather than doing the right thing? >> that's a good question, pete. i don't buy the safety issue simply because when you look at spread of territory up in montana, we're willing to take it out in 12-mile strip of territorial waters off the east coast of united states but some people out there like senator tester saying it will be in a 400 square mile depact it wouldn't be. we could have taken it out. it should not have come out of alaska. alaska is part of the united states. it is up there. they have critical infrastructure as well before it

came down through canada. i'm sure that country is not happy with what weren't on with the chinese as well. we shouldn't have hesitated unless there was a intelligence purpose behind watching how it communicated, what it processed, what it was doing, because we're gaining intelligence from the chinese as well and watching them, but won't be until we actually get the debris and can analyze it to find out how it was communicating and processing. rachel: kirk, we heard our generals say before, general milley, we will let the chinese you know, we will communicate with them before we make certain moves. this took so long as you said. there is no explanation unless there is some intelligence gathering on our part we needed with this balloon. again, back to the question that pete asked, why would we tyke that long? is it possible that our president was getting permission from the chinese to take it down? i mean, let's just all be

honest. he is potentially compromised by many of the business deals his family made with the chinese communists government? >> the great point, rachel. when i look at it, we should not have hesitated, when you look at it. this reminds me of kind of that mindset that our country had pre-9/11. we were not appreciating the threat that al qaeda represented to our nation and i think today we do not appreciate the threat that china represents to our national security. they are not a competitor. by their actions they are in fact taking decisive measures making them more of an enemy of the united states than an actual competitor. certaintily not someone we can cooperate and work with. they violate international law in the south china sea. they violate the airspace with this balloon. they violate, steal our property appreciate across the board. face it they killed over 100,000 americans getting fentanyl

precursor chemicals to the drug cartels in mexico that come across the open border. be realistic china is a threat to the national security of the united states. why this president continues to dawdle, why the military continues not view it as a threat is beyond me. the american people should start demanding we stop accepting this type of behavior with china. we shouldn't being reactive mode. let's be proactive, make our enemies wonder what we do next as opposed to wonder what they do next. rachel: can you imagine after the cold war we would make climate deals with the soviet union? >> it is unbelievable. the fact we can even do that, is a sign of progress. by the same token actions speak stronger than words. clearly president put wants to destablize europe and the entire couldn't ment by invasion in

ukraine. one hand working with china on climate deals, everything else but by same token allow other manufacturing and things to be made there when they should be coming back to the united states and work with other countries that have democracies. that is where the threat comes. what is vulnerable to our nation if it were to be cut off by china, and how would it impact our economy and our national security. will: really quickly commander, you implored us to do what the china, what do you think they will do after this balloon was shot down. >> i don't think they will do anything. maybe more talking and blustering and maneuveringoff taiwan because we know that we have national security interest there. may attempt to further militarize the islands in the south china sea. we may not see anything but over time they will continue to build out their military, build it out into the south china sea, which

i was vocal like you, this was a bad idea. how do you feel that this many years later it was not good for kids? >> people ask me that all the time, do i feel vindicated. i don't. i feel enraged, frankly. people like you and me had the audacity to say something before "the new york times" said it. something that was patently obvious. that children would be harmed from prolonged school closures. we were vilified, we were smeared. it was the reason i was ousted from my job. it is the reason, more important than anything like that, happened to people like me, the reason schools stayed closed so long. "new york times" did nothing but further fear for close to three years about the risk of covid to children. first it was covid. then myocarditis from covid. the children would kill grandma. it went on and on. the fact schools in sweden and denmark were open the whole time

it was fine. rachel: china, an in china, those kids were going to school as well. by the way right here in new york city across the country catholic schoolkids were going to school. nothing was happening. so the evidence was before their eyes and what do you think is the reason why they were so long to come to this reality? was it, they wanted to support certain political parties? was it the unions they felt beholden to? why did it take so long? >> essentially those are one and the same. the teachers unions are the largest democratic party supporter. "the new york times" and press more broadly failed to do its job. they carried water for the democratic party as well as big pharma. they wrote headlines essentially talking points from those two parties. they did not interrogate the issues. i feel no vindication. i feel enraged when i see the

new headlines. they skip ad step. what about the part you were complicit in all of this. what about the part people like me finally how we knew all along, regular normal people, we knew were right all along. we were smeared as racist. they skipped a step. i'm pretty mad about that. rachel: i'm mad about that. they need to apologize to people like you. they need to apologize to all the people who left their jobs because of the fear-mongering they did. they need to admit ties to the big pharma, to the party, to the unions. you're absolutely right. i am just as mad as you are. thanks for joining us. you've been an amazing voice throughout this, a voice of common sense and parents across the country, appreciate what you sacrificed to voice how they feel. they don't have the bully pulpit of "the new york times" but people like you gave them a voice. thank you, jennifer. >> thank you, rachel.

joe biden taking to the podium, talking about the state of the country, how are you feeling right now? >> he passed the bipartisan infrastructure act. he passed the infrastructure act. he has a plan with auto emissions people to reduce emissions 2030. he restored the clean water act, violence against women act. helped with the burn pit legislation. thank you, jon stewart and allowed medicare to negotiate drug prices. i'm feeling strong going into some of the things i was very interested about. he passed the first gun legislation passed in years although we do need a automatic weapons ban. pete: no doubt a lot of legislation passed in the democrat controlled house and senate. >> i feel good. pete: what about voters peeling about crime, inflation, the border what is happening overseas. there is still a sense of anxiety in country. >> still a sense of anxiety with ukraine and russia. i feel like too much fighting going on there. i would obviously love to bring

russia and ukraine to the table to negotiate. i would like to help biden do that. there are things we're upset. pete: for sure. madeleine, you used to be a democrat, you now consider a conservative. what do you expect to hear? >> i expect to hear the same old, same old. i don't expect to hear anything different. i expect to hear more of our tax dollars being wasted on things that do not benefit the regular, average, everyday american. especially hard-working tax paying americans. we're the ones who are being hurt the most by all these policies. it does not affect or benefit our communities at all. our communities continue to decline. the quality of life continues to erode. crime continues to be out of control. so we would like to know what

information was already shared or do you think we have the capabilities, blocking those transmissions back to china? >> well, good to see you this morning. i don't think even if we use the best electronic war systems out there we don't know for sure information was not trans misted back unless you're sitting in that intelligence operations on the chinese side and seeing what is coming through and my main concern we don't know what was collected and what data was transmitted over top of our airspace. to also say they waited to shoot it down because it didn't pose a real threat is disingenuous. the point of intelligence collection, the point of surveillance just like this hon your adversaries to cause damage to them. that is why the u.s. government conducts surveillance to eventually strike at perceived threats. whether the damage is inimmediate or years down the road it is irrelevant. significant damage has been don't. information is collected. administration initial response to whistle past the threated tells me they're not prepared. i used to do a lot of defense like this.

people don't understand the amount of data can be captured over that height. we're talking over 60,000 feet in the air this is the altitude we put our own surveillance aircraft. you might think you're staring at one small point in the ground but you are able to collect a massive amount of area surface. sitting over montana. you could be collecting in california or idaho. so that is the danger here. this is a bigger problem than people realize. will: gordon, great to see you this morning as well. i want to read you something from the chinese, get your response. the u.s. use u.s.ed fores to attack a unmanned air shape. we express solemn protest against the move on the u.s. side. china reserves the right to use necessary means in similar situations. that is sabre-rattling, gordon. what do you think the response will be from the chinese? >> the response so far, although the words are tough is milder than i thought they would be. we have comments from the foreign ministry, the defense

ministry, and social media postings they seemed i think to try to underplay this which shows some embarassment inside of the regime. they can get tougher in comments as time goes on. we've seen that before in the past, will. so we should be on the lookout for that as well. at least for the moment they're trying to keep it quiet. will: brett, i want to go back to you on the intel in just a moment. follow up what you just said. you don't feel confident we would be able to completely black any transmission back to china. i will ask you a quick two-part question here. we don't realize what can be captured from 60,000 feet. it may be over montana but you could see stuff in california. what detail could you get from a craft at 60,000 feet like this over say drone or satellite technology? how much, how unique would that information be, that is one. real quick, brett, do you give any argument made we were collecting intel, we watched how this operated and we were collecting intel on chinese

techniques? >> no, i don't give credence to that. typically the surveillance systems like balloons are part of layered interconnected surveillance system. they're all connected sharing data. this layered system could be transmitting much more than photographs or things likes that. it cotransmit signals. so much could be collected from altitude. this warrants a response whether a covert action or a more public response. i'm waiting to see what the biden administration would do here. something more than secretary blinken canceling a couple meetings other summoning the chinese ambassador. we look weak here. the reports of administration knowing about this, reports keeping it secret from the public are not true. why does it take uproar from the public for the administration to take action? this was a test. we played into the long term chinese strategy publicly high iting how weak our response
