>> you are so true. rachel: we're going to move to a fox news alert. the u.s. air force shoots down the chinese air balloon that hovered over the u.s. for days after it moved over the atlantic ocean yesterday. >> navy war ships, surface divers and fbi are searching the area to recover debris. debris, brookesigman is here wi. >> fox news captured the moment the chinese spy balloon was shot down yesterday. the fighter jet shot down the balloon which floated across the mainland u.s. this week. shortly after, president biden claimed he wanted to down the balloon earlier but was overruled. >> on wednesday when i was briefed on the balloon i ordered the pentagon to shoot it down on wednesday, as soon as possible. without doing damage to anyone on the ground. they decided that the best time to do that was when it got over water, so it was within 12-mile limit. >> the 12-mile limit biden

mentions is referring to coastal state's right to claim 12 nautical miles of the notion as their territory. the faa temporarily closing the air space around the balloon and pausing all air traffic through wilmington, myrtle beach and charleston's airports as it was shot down. a senior official revealing yesterday's shot at the balloon was the military's first chance to target the bay balloon whilt floated over water. officials could have fired at the balloon while it was over montana but they said they didn't over an abundance of caution. the chinese military responding that the use of force by the u.s. is a overreaction and serious violation of international practice. they will safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the company concerned and reserves the right to make sure refonses if necessary. earlier this morning, gordon chang and special operations intel analyst joined us with

ambassador robert o'brien who said he was never briefed as well as rick burr fell who served as national director of intelligence and they say they were never briefed on something like this so if it happened, they weren't told. >> someone is leaking the fact that they're accusing that it happened under trump to say it's no big deal. >> biden administration officials said it happened in the last administration. the people who i have spoken to who i think would have been in a possession to know, said we didn't hear anything like that. >> i know you're working on a story like that. rachel: great reporting. great reporting. >> rest's go off the wall -- not all the waff. wall.to the touch screen. let's talk about the significance of this a little bit. first of all, will, you dubbed it yesterday, i think you were right, this was a trial balloon by balloon. how far could the you chinese get with surveillance activity get before we reacted.

heartland of where our nuclear capabilities are and joe biden waited until it got here to soot it down. it raises the question of how much were they able to push back to beijing that's actionable for them in the future because the balloon at 60,000 feet is more granular and detailed than a satellite orbiting that goes over one particular location at a time. rachel: can i ask you something that's tangential to this. you're a former military guy. think about the mindset you had when you wanted to join the military and when you see this kind of weakness, maybe there's a great reason why the biden administration didn't act sooner but when you see this kind of weakness, you know, lack of action, how does that affect recruitment? we're in a really bad place recruitment-wise. pete: i would call it risk aversion. there's a disease of risk aversion inside our pentagon. the pentagon's job is not to be safe. pentagon's job is to stand up to our adversaries, he hopefully prevent conflict.

here we are. we shot it down. good on us. good on, again, our men and women, who are you going to call, 1-800-united states military. how do we move forward with this? it's a significant i believe move on the chinese part and their ability to to influence the united states and national security will grow faster after this event. >> all right. what does this tell us about plans that china may have around taiwan? the cia director says that xi jinping has ordered mill troy be ready for an invasion. are the two tied together? are they trying to probe us on what our capabilities are. >> everything is tied together with china. they're very deliberate. we've talked about this in the past. they're ex straightforward s exy deliberate in their planning. everything is tied together as they move forward. all instruments of national power are tied together, economic, finance, information, military, diplomatic and so

forth had. we have to look at this as not just one event from the balloon but the whole but the cia director mentioned that he's very concerned about potentially a breakout china and taiwan and invasion and so forth, could-they may have the capability to do this in 2027. so that's of is. let's' also -- that's of significance. let's keep in mind the russia invasion of ukraine, the largest land invasion since world war ii is keeping us focused on ukraine, russia. china and president xi is absolutely watching that extraordinarily close. how we prepare, how we support, are we going to leave our trends and allies like we did in afghanistan with that debacle of a withdrawal. this is very important. my last point here is that in my 34 years and 11 years since i've retired, i've never seen a more frankly a difficult national security environment for any administration but particularly for the biden administration. russia, china, obviously you've got north korea and with iran.

so the point is, is that we've got to keep a main focus not only on u.s. national security interest but how to make sure that our allies and our friends will know that the united states will stand by them as well as our adversaries will know, will, and you i think -- pete, you picked up on this, they only understand strength. the only way we're going to maintain peace is through strent strength. rachel: it's a -- rachel: it's a good point. we've been talking about the military bases there, obviously that's going to be of interest to them. the balloon went over our heartland. we know chinas is gobbling up farmland, trying to corner in some ways our food supply as well. does the that concern you as well, lieutenant general? >> i'm very concerned. i'm very concerned, rachel. youyou probably saw in the presa couple months ago or so, chinese were buying property outside of grand forks air force base, a major installation for training and operating. i think we need to be on very close watch starting now and there is, again, i don't trust

a fighting gun crime. rachel: thank you. i know he health liberty is important to you. have we learned the lessons over what happened over covid. the president just announced covid -- he says it will be over -- >> it's conveniently done in may. well, right. that is something that i was concerned about. over the last three years, during this covid pandemic, that continues, that's what i was doing as an attorney, i was doing a lot of covid litigation and fighting for people in hospitals that are getting killing protocols. we had a protocol that would keep them alive. that's what i've been doing with other lawyers across the country. i don't trust president biden. i don't trust anything that comes out of his mouth. i really don't. i think whatever he is going to say on tuesday, we have to take it with a grain of salt. conveniently, the covid pandemic a will be over within may. my number one issue is national security. he's the commander in chief.

his job is to secure the american people. he failed us. his priorities are not with us. rachel: lead me just -- so she's talking about national security. i think democrats care about national security too. how concerned are you when all of this information has come out about hunter biden and the biden family connections, 10% for the big guy, you know, getting money from the chinese communist government and chinese businesses. are you worried that the president is compromised and how do you think it affects the situation like we had this week with the balloon. >> the chinese balloon, that was unfortunate, i'm glad it was shot down, i'm glad nobody got hurt. in terms of hunter biden, i literally -- i don't think about that at all. as a catholic physician, what i'm concerned about is access to abortion care, access to- rachel: as a catholic physician. >> as a catholic physician. i'll claim that. rachel: that's a shocking statement. >> i am not trying to shock.

i've seen coat h hanger abortio, back in the '90s when i was in med school. i want access to birth control care and abortion care. i would like biden to focus getting more people into the middle class. in 2015 it tipped. we need to bring more people into the middle class and i would like to see a ban on automatic weapons and a he focus on domestic terrorism in this country. rachel: all right. frank? >> we just had in the earlier segment talking about the mining ban thats was put into place in minnesota. and those are good jobs they that could occur here. the same week this administration approved hundreds of millions of dollars to be sent to the democratic republic of congo to support its mining operations, where unicef says 40,000 children are employed. rachel: that's heart breaking. >> as miners. rachel: slave labor. >> if you want a green economy, great. you need mining, you need
