the 31st when the white house says the president was first briefed on it and gave the order to shoot it down when safe to do so. >> dana: officials advised the president to wait until the aircraft was over water and allowed it to float across the country raising fears it could be gathering sensitive intelligence. the pentagon says it blocked the spy flight from doing that and four days later the air force took the shot. >> bill: the navy and coast guard in the process of trying to recover the debris hoping to reverse engineer it and clean intel from what's left behind. according to republicans, the damage has already been done. >> the message they were trying to since. we are in decline and the message to the world these guys can't do anything about a balloon. >> let it complete its mission is an embarrassment to the

united states. >> over the atlantic is like the quarterback tackling the quarterback after the game is over. >> it makes no sense and makes us look weak and flat footed on the world stage. time to push back before it is too late. before something far more dangerous than a balloon is flying over america. >> bill: analysis from congressman michael waltz who says it's another sputnik moment. the chief national correspondent jennifer griffin working the story from hour one. good morning. >> good morning. senior military official estimates it will take less than a few weeks to recover all the remains of the balloon. u.s. navy is leading recovery efforts with the ship u.s.s. carter hall. destroyer u.s.s. austin and cruiser philippine sea and navy divers. there is shallow water. let's look at the timeline. chinese surveillance balloon was

launched on january 21st from china crossed into alaska on january 28th. senior u.s. defense official tells me it spent minutes, not hours, over the u.s. territorial waters near the aleutian islands off alaska and crossed into canada. entered the continental u.s. through idaho on january 31st. president biden gave the order to shoot it down when deemed safe to do so on wednesday, february 1st when briefed about the balloon by his national security team. the u.s. military took the shot, one shot with an air to aramis ill known as a side winder as soon as the balloon left the continental u.s. six minutes into its flight over the atlanta was brought down from af22 launched from virginia. they estimated they had approximately 18 minutes to shoot it down after it left the u.s. mainland and still remained over u.s. territory before it

democrats and republicans are now questioning the biden administration's response to this chinese spy flight. democrat senator john tester of montana, chairman of defense appropriations has called for a hearing on last week's events saying he is going to pull people in before the committee to find out how this happened. we have a couple of house hearings on china's threat already on the calendar this week where this could also come up. the gang of eight will be briefed this week and all senator briefing next week. senate intel chairman mark warner tweeting his frustration. >> we should not have had this kind of incursion into the united states. we have a real problem with china on a number of issues. i'm grateful the military took

foxnews.com. chinese spy balloon is a sputnik moment for america. explain your case there, sir. >> i hope this was a wake-up call for the american people that we are facing a tsunami of chinese espionage in our universities and research labs, businesses, silicon valley through cyber. i hope it was a visible, tangible sputnik moment much like we had in 1957 when the soviets put up the first satellite that really, again, wakes us up to the fact that just as we were in a cold war then, we're in a cold war with the chinese communist party and the difference, though, why this one is so much more dangerous than the one with the soviet union we're so economically dependent and they have created so many supply chain dependencies. i hope the silver lining here is

this is a wake-up call for the country. >> dana: i want to ask you about what the pentagon said anonymously on background about balloons over the united states during the trump administration. before i do can i ask you what you think from your perspective the chinese were thinking? they were about to have a visit from secretary antony blinken. it got called off. others think it is a greatest unforced error the chinese have made in some time. how do you see it? >> i agree with senator rubio. this was from a propaganda standpoint a tremendous win for them. they can now message to taiwan, our allies and others that on top of afghanistan, america is a declining power and they can't even stop one of our most basic surveillance tools, a bah -- balloon. they are either incapable or

lack political will. if you don't think the chinese aren't blasting that on their propaganda you are kidding yourself. >> dana: if you could just explain what you heard. i know you got a call from d.o.d. trying to give us as much as you can. a lot of it is secret stuff and -- but the pentagon, if you could clarify to the extent that you know. there are some people there claiming there were balloons of this type that crossed into american either waters or territory during the trump administration. >> we weren't able to ask questions but essentially what we were told is there were multiple incursions over florida, one over texas and separate reporting we haven't been able to ask about yet over hawaii and guam. what were the extent of these incursions? were they over the waters or over our territory? what did they collect? the bigger issue is that in speaking to former national security advisor robert o'brien

lot of these questions today given the state of the union address that goes down tomorrow night. >> dana: the "wall street journal" editorial board saying biden and the chinese spy balloon. why wait so long to order it shot down? maybe we'll hear more about that. could be good reasons and so we'll hear about them. people are curious when it was coming over alaska why not there? we'll find out. >> bill: today would be the day to do that. >> dana: the other breaking news story. more than 1900 people now reportedly killed after two powerful earthquakes just hours apart rocking southern turkey and northern syria. the quakes toppled multiple buildings. officials feel hundreds are trapped beneath the rubble. alex hogan is live in london with the latest. what else do you know? >> as disastrous as the numbers are it worsens minute by minute. we know it was early this morning people were sleeping when the first earthquake hit. it was a 7.8 magnitude.

the worst earthquake to hit turkey in a century. the second one quickly followed several hours later. this was a 7.7 magnitude earthquake. the impact specifically hit southern turkey and northern syria. millions of people also felt it through lebanon and cyprus. more than 1900 people are confirmed to have died in these two earthquakes and the after shocks. because of some of those after shocks residents hid in vehicles fearing more buildings would come down moments just like this. take a listen. [screaming and shouting] >> 5,000 people are wounded in turkey. 3,000 people are wounded in syria. of course, the main concern right now are the people who remain trapped in the rubble as we speak. rescue teams and search operations are currently underway trying to find these

>> dana: the faa investigating another scary close call on the tarmac. this time in austin, texas, fedex cargo plane firelessed to abort the landing to avoid hitting a passenger jet on the same runway. casey stiegel live in dallas. what do you know? >> could you imagine being on that flight? according to the faa both aircraft were following instructions given to them by air traffic control but the big question, of course, why would atc clear boat -- both of those planes to use the same runway at the same time? it shows the near miss. fedex cargo plane a giant boeing 767 coming in there on the top of your screen to land on the far right runway. the exact spot where that southwest 737 passenger jet was about to take off. officials say the fedex pilots aborted the landing and initiate

a rapid climb where they circled the airport as the southwest flight safely departed bound for can can. not sure how many passengers and crew on board at the time. the planes came within 1,000 feet of each other. that is something investigators are looking into. saturday's incident two days after -- one plane waited for departure and the next plane ran into it. passengers were able to deplane safely. january 18th, trouble at jfk international when a jetblue airbus was preparing for take-off for puerto rico when it hit the tail of another jet parked at the gate. again, nobody was hurt in that incident either but no doubt

certainly frightening moments for any passengers involved in this recent string of accidents or near misses. again the ntsb and faa all investigating these. >> dana: let's hope that's the end of that. thanks. >> bill: 22 past the hour now. better than expected jobs number on friday showed employers added 517,000 new jobs. blowing away past expectations. unemployment rate slid to the lowest level since 1969. there is a catch. david asman from fox business has found it. welcome back. what's the catch? >> the catch is first of all let's not bury the good news. it is great news. the number was almost three times what was expected. it is wonderful to see americans working again coming back into the workforce. but the president keeps talking about this as proof that he came into a lousy economy and turned the whole thing around. he even said last week that inflation was taking off when he

came in. sure, go ahead. >> dana: call for number four. all right. >> president biden: remember what the economy was like when i got here? jobs were hemorrhaging, inflation was rising, we weren't manufacturing a damn thing here. we were in real economic difficulty. >> dana: all right. >> that's what we'll hear. he inheristed a terrible economy. inflation was already here when i got here. inflation was 1.4% in january of 2021. 1.4%. talk about jobs numbers, we just had this great jobs number. good news. the last time we had a jobs number this high was guest what? january 2021 when he came in. inflation was 1.4%, we were growing at a 6% rate. now we are year-over-year about a 2% rate.

it is just not true. i hate to use the word lie but it is a lie when he talks about the economy being in such terrible shape when he came in. he also brags about bringing down did deficit. the only reason the deficit came down at all was because a lot of the covid spending from the trump administration phased out. he added 4.8 trillion to the overall debt in this nation. the "washington post" by the way is not a conservative paper gave him three pinocchios for claiming credit for bringing down the deficit. >> bill: a lot going on. some suggesting employers are holding onto their workers longer than they would normally. >> seasonal workers. >> bill: the fed makes a move on interest rate 48 hours before the jobs report comes out. do you think there would be a better way of sequencing that. that's for another today. the president was asked a week ago do you take credit for the rise in inflation sew he said

"washington post" great poll over the weekend are you better or worse off since biden took office. 41% say they're worse now than when he came in. that's a reflection of inflation, gas prices, other factors. >> the bottom line. statistics are crazy things. you can take a statistic from any particular point of time to prove your point whether you are on the right or left or somewhere in between. the real question is how people feel. they know that they are living paycheck to paycheck now. 65% of americans living paycheck to paycheck. that means you can't develop capital of your own. we talk about america being a capitalist country and we think usually of businesses. but individuals develop capital, too. how we buy houses and cars, that's how we develop more scratch than we need to survive.

now you can't save anything. you can't put money and invest money in your children's education or invest money in the future. that's what makes people so pessimistic about right now. he will come out with this glowing survey focusing on that jobs report and other things. if he continues these lying claims he will get three pinocchios not only from fox news but "washington post." he better be careful about that. and the bottom line is americans aren't going to believe him. will they believe him or their lying eyes? >> dana: you know how it is when you are in a bad mood and somebody says cheer up? people hate that. he runs the risk of doing that tuesday night. >> america, you can always go broke by betting against america. it's a great country. we want to work. there are so many incentives not to work and mistakes made for the first two years of the biden administration spending more than you could imagine that created the inflation. wasn't created by trump or russia. you look at the stats.

as is often the case people get trapped in the buildings and they find a pocket of air where they can hang on for several days, if not longer. if you get rescue crews in there early enough, you got a chance of saving some lives. buried in the rubble. we're holding onto hope for that. a devastating act of mother nature for these people in that part of the world. back to that story throughout the morning and keep you posted. >> dana: court is back in session in south carolina for the double murder trial of disgraced attorney alex murdaugh. prosecutors who accuse him of killing his wife and son continuing to chip away at his potential motive. but the judge could throw out new testimony before the jury has a chance to hear it. why would that be? jonathan serrie live in atlanta to tell us more. hi, jonathan. >> it's like a trial within a trial. for the first two hours of today's hearing, court will be in session without the jury present in the courtroom.

while the judge assesses additional potential testimony and witnesses. prosecutors have asked the judge to rule whether they can have access to statements that alex murdaugh made three days after the murders of his wife and son. they argue the statements are not protected by attorney/client privilege because third parties were present at the time. before the jury returns the judge is also expected to hear testimony from mark tinsley, the attorney representing the family of mallory beach, the 19-year-old who died in a 2019 boat accident allegedly caused by murdaugh's son paul was intoxicated and then underage. the victims's family sued the murdaugh's which opened alex's finances and they were shot the head of finance for the law firm confronted him about missing funds. three months later murdaugh

survived a gunshot wound on the same day a fellow attorney confronted him about settlement money he had allegedly pocketed. authorities accuse him of hiring someone to shoot him so his surviving son would collect on life insurance. the judge will eventually decide how much of this testimony on alex murdaugh's alleged financial crimes the jury will hear. right now it is all being testified in a closed court without the jury present. dana. >> dana: okay. we'll pay attention to that. jonathan kicking us off on a monday. >> bill: the 2024 presidential race looming large over the state of the union address tomorrow night. president biden expected to take credit for his administration's accomplishments. analysts say could be a soft launch for re-election campaign. the polls point a different direction. "washington post", abc news survey over the weekend. 58% of democrats say they want someone new on the ticket.

wednesday 73% are dissatisfied with the direction of the country. four points higher than before the mid-term election. things have gotten worse in terms of people's impression of the situation. abc news poll came out 40% of americans say that their personal finances have gotten worse under biden. which is the worst number in 40 years in that poll. so you can't spin -- you can spin a lot of things in politics. you can't spin people's personal finances. you can't tell people you are doing better than you think you are. i know you looked at your bank account and stocks but i'm telling you, we are doing well and just have to trust me and not your bank account. >> bill: trump beats biden in every category if 2024 is between those two. pete buttigieg was asked why isn't the president's accomplishments being received more by americans? here is that exchange. >> let's go to the president's

state of the union. look, he has a lot of things to tout. why do you think it hasn't penetrated the american public? >> these things don't sell themselves and one of the reasons i look forward to that state of the union address. i will say there have been so many accomplishments under this administration. it can be difficult to list them in a distilled way. >> bill: so many accomplishments. you can have 40 or 50 million people watch it possibly on tuesday night. it is an opportunity, marc. >> it's the most-watched speech any president gives. the problem is with the question that chuck todd asked why isn't it penetrating? you can't spin people's personal finances. people know whether they do better or worse than two years ago. by the way, it is not -- 80% according to the fox poll 80% think the economy is in bad shape . 61% blame joe biden for the state of the economy. it is not just the economy.
