central america which the white house says will help address the root causes of the crisis. critics is a i the administration is not doing nearing enough. >> the issues they won't enforce the law in any respect. every single policy they've introduced since president biden has been in office has been to deter enforcement and encourage illegal immigration. it is a total dodge and game and utter and complete nonsense. >> dana: we'll bring you all the action coming from the hill. chad pergram is live with more on today's border hearing and yuma, arizona mayor has more on record immigration is affecting his community. let's get to bill melugin live in mission, texas to set us up this morning. hi, bill. >> good morning. one of the border patrol center chiefs testifying this morning oversees the tucson, arizona sector. it saw the most known gotaways of any sector on the southern
7:03 am
border last year with over 175,000. that sector is known for evaders and they announced they recently arrested two convicted sex offenders there. take a look at these. one is a mexican national the agents found being smuggled in a car. a pedophile convicted of felony attempted sexual assault on a child in a position of trust. that happened in the state of c colorado. the other convicted of felony first degree sexual abuse in new york city in 2011. both sex offenders just arrested in the tucson, arizona sector. we'll take you to where we are in the rio grande valley. look at the video. we embedded with texas dps troopers as they go into the brush looking for evaders, runners, the people not willing to turn themselves in. they are not asylum seekers but looking to slip past law enforcement.
7:04 am
they arrest groups. you see a ladder in a pickup truck. they seized it that the illegal immigrants were using to climb over the levy wall. keep if mind this is texas law enforcement. texas dps trooper, highway patrol. they aren't supposed to be working with border patrol. because of operation lone star they have to do this. guys supposed to be on the highways writing speeding tickets not looking for illegal immigrants in the brush. governor abbott called them into service to help out border patrol. we'll take you out to arizona. series of major fentanyl busts. half a million fentanyl pills seized in the last seven days by cbp at the port of entry. six different loads smuggled in all sorts of ways, bumpers, gas tanks, body carriers, people strapping fentanyl to their bodies. back live border patrol reports in the last 48 hours alone they've seized 66 pounds of fentanyl enough to kill millions of people.
7:05 am
we'll send it back to you. >> dana: keep at it and we'll stay in touch. >> bill: house republicans looking for answers on the record number of border crossings since the president took office. two border agents will testify after the administration tried to block them from appearing. they'll be there. chad pergram has that story live on the hill now. chad, hello. >> good morning, bill. the border is 1700 miles from washington, d.c. but the border comes to capitol hill today. republicans hope to cast a spotlight on the border hours before president biden delivers his state of the union speech. some gop members want to impeach homeland security secretary mayokas and even the president over the border. >> let's do the inquiry. but if we will sit around and talk about it and not have any action on this to investigate and then proceed with normal due process rights for secretary mayokas then i think you make a huge mistake. we just don't have the time. we can't go for another two
7:06 am
years with 5 million people illegally entering the country. >> bill: fox has told biggs knows one of the agents testifying today. but these are not the witnesses the gop wanted at the hearing. there is pressure from conservatives on house speaker kevin mccarthy to impeach. mccarthy is taking a measured approach. >> we will never use impeachment for political reasons. it is not going to happen. it doesn't mean if something rises to the level of impeachment we wouldn't do it. the committees will start the inquiries and let it go wherever it takes us. >> it may be hard for republicans to pass any border security plan to get through the senate and earn the signature of the president. democrats worry about the border, too. >> fortunately there is this myth that democrats somehow aren't concerned about a secure border. we also want to insure that we want -- everybody wants a secure border but insure we talk about the humanity of people.
7:07 am
>> house republicans are ramping up their investigations of the border. there have been 300,000 illegal border crossings since late last year. >> bill: extraordinary number. we'll follow it. >> dana: let's bring in yuma, arizona mayor doug nichols. you have a lot on your plate and the administration will see what they can do i guess tonight in the state of the union address. what would you like to hear from them or want them to hear from you? >> i would love to hear from the president tonight that they are really going to step in and own this situation instead of trying to work with the cities on the front end as far as releases and such. but at the end of the day we need a real strong change of direction. we've seen a little bit, which has been great. the adding three more countries to the immediate process list. and some of the other work being done in central america. but that's just the tip of the iceberg. it needs to be a lot more and i would love to hear the president
7:08 am
mention or commit tonight that that's what they will be doing in the next year. >> dana: the border czar also known as vice president kamala harris talking about what she would like to see happen. >> at the end of last year we saw rising level of migration from other countries. congress must fix our broken immigration system. and congress must provide the necessary funds for border security. >> dana: can you wait for congress to act, sir? >> definitely not. congress does need to do that. she is right about it. but we need strong policy. we have had stronger policy in the past that has been very effective with the exact same laws on the books. so to wait for laws to change is really kicking the can down the road. we need to have policies with these laws that are currently in place that would change the direction and posture along the
7:09 am
border. >> dana: we have been very interested in your situation at the yuma regional medical center, the hospital there. can you tell me the situation at that hospital now and how that is affecting citizens and residents of your city? >> that situation peaked about 4 or 5 months ago. it has not let off with the let off of some of the crossing activity. we're down about 300 to 500 people a day now. so that's also reduced the demand on the hospital. but this is the time of year which we have an extra 100,000 people in our community from the winter visitors to our ag laborers. that hospital is busy this time of year, too. so right now it's in a better spot but it could be days away from being in a disastrous spot again. >> dana: no way to run a hospital indeed. i know you have your hands full. mayor, thank you for joining us today. appreciate it. >> thank you, dana. >> bill: 300 to 400 a day doesn't sound great, right?

also watching another hearing on the hill. back to capitol hill. a series of near misses at major airports in recent weeks. connell mcshane follows that with us today in new york city. connell, hello. >> yeah, a lot of attention on this today with those mishops you are talking about as they get underway on capitol hill. we'll hear from a top official at the f.a.a. chair of the ntsb and head of the nation's largest pilot union all before the house panel. a lot for the lawmakers to look through. the faa is already under a fair amount of scrutiny over all the delays and cancellations and of course that computer outage that led to the first nationwide ground stop in america air travel since 9/11. on top of that all the near misses on the runways around the country and headlines. the most alarming this saturday austin, texas, fedex plain coming in for a landing on the
7:11 am
same runway that a southwest passenger plane was cleared to take off from. the pilot pulled up just in time but the ntsb in fresh comments is now saying these two planes may have come within 100 feet of each other, 100 feet. you are looking at denver international ceo picked to lead the faa. some republicans are concerned about his lack of experience in the aviation world. we see the hearing getting underway and we'll monitor it from washington. questions about outdated technology and the pilot shortage and how it might all be connected to safety. >> bill: connell mcshane watching that aviation hearing for us today. 12 past. [shouting] >> dana: president biden says the united states will assist

>> every piece we obtain from the crime scene, the lab will put it back together. we look at it as a crime scene. we have a lot of experience at this. the lab is the best in the world at this kind of stuff. we put together ieds and plane crashes, such as that. so the laboratory does have the resources and the technology to put this back together again. >> dana: the f.b.i. sending the remains of a chinese spy craft to its lab in virginia for analysis. the air force shot it down saturday off the coast of south carolina. crews have recovered most of the debris floating on the surface of the water. the operation is now focused on

pulling pieces of equipment from the ocean floor. the search area is said to be the size of 15 football fields. the u.s. pathfinder is using sonar to map the area. criminal investigators are on site and explosive ordnance team in case it was rigged to detonate. officials say waiting to shoot it down allowed the u.s. to collect valuable intelligence. >> 50 feet deep water. you wonder what they will find. will they get all of it? i don't know. some of the fragment were sent to quantico yesterday. i don't know if they recovered more since then. >> dana: if it was rigged to explode you would think the chinese would warn us. you hope that would be the case. >> bill: on the hill they're talking about this from myrtle

beach to washington we go. dual hearings as the threat posed by china as the white house defends a slow response to the spy flight after it spent a week violating our airspace. reporters questioned the president on monday afternoon. >> president biden: we made it clear to china what we'll do. they understand our position. we won't back off. we did the right thing and not a question of weakness, it's reality. >> bill: ro khanna from california. thank you for coming back to our program here. i have a bunch of questions myself. i'm sure you do. what is top of mind right now for you? >> well, bill, the first thing is we need to celebrate our military. we decided to take that balloon down at the time of our own choosing. we could have done it at any time. the military advised -- >> bill: including alaska. >> the military advised the
7:21 am
president, our great military leaders, that it should be done when there isn't risk to american lives. unlike other countries which sometimes don't have the same regard for human life. certainly in china with their human rights violations, we value every life in this country and every town. we made the decision that we would shoot it down at our own choosing. now for china to take any lesson from this other than american resolve and american strength would be a big mistake. >> bill: apair papparently theyn doing it. mark green was with us last hour. here are his questions. watch. >> secretary austin comes to the armed services committee time and time again and says the pacing threat is china. if that's the pacing threat, then why are you allowing them to fly a spy balloon over our country, over our military
7:22 am
installations? >> care to take a crack at that one? >> we do need answers in terms of how often have these balloons been crossing american airspace in how often has that happened? and how will we make it clear that it never happens again. i think there should be a clear message to china that those balloons in the future will be shot down before they get anywhere close to american airspace. >> bill: our defense budget is $850 billion. "wall street journal" asked with all that money can't you detect a chinese air ship? >> i have been imposed to massive increases of the defense budget. i do think it's fair to say what are we going to do going forward? one thing, bill, i hope we don't do in this country is make it a partisan issue. we're all americans and care about our national security and want to make sure this doesn't happen again.
7:23 am
let's not take partisan shots at president trump or biden? >> you came on to be fair about this talking about a time of our choosing. that balloon was over the ocean in the aleutian islands. it would appear in hindsight that was a time to take your mark. would you not agree? >> look, i think those questions need to be asked and maybe going forward there needs to be clear policy that these balloons need to be shot down before they come close to american territory. but once the president was notified, the balloon was already over american land and i think at that point there would have been a real risk to either americans or to towns or communities. >> bill: i respect your answer there with regard to americans certainly. this whole relationship between beijing and washington. how concerned are you about that right now? >> i'm concerned. obviously the fact that china has crossed the taiwan strait
7:24 am
and launched missiles tests crossed taiwanese airspace. i'm also concerned that hundreds of thousands of our jobs have gone to china. we have an unacceptable trade deficit with china that we need to rebalance. it doesn't mean we don't engage in tough diplomacy even at the height of the cold war with the soviet union president reagan and others engaged. we need to be tough but also need to engage. >> bill: i think a lot of people are feeling what you are trying to describe there that it is a different world within one week's time. should the president direct this head on tonight? >> it's loud here. >> bill: should the president address that head on tonight? >> he absolutely must. he needs to articulate exactly what our china strategy is going to be. he needs to make it clear that any future balloons or any violation of national airspace will not stand. i think he needs to start in my view with that explanation to
7:25 am
the american public. >> bill: we'll see if you get your wish. thanks, we'll watch later tonight. thank you for your time today from california. thank you, sir. 24 past. >> dana: we're monitoring the hill as the republican-led house investigates the white house on the surge of migrants at the border. the border chiefs giving their opening statements and all of this is happening just hours before the president delivers his state of the union address. some republicans wondering if he will use the speech to take any responsibility for the state of the country? >> he will say i shot it down and then all the democrats will stand up and applaud and he will go on to his next blow smoke line. when you add up the biden presidency we have abandoned sovereignty. helping them achieve financial freedom. we're providing greater access to investing, with low-cost options to help maximize savings. from the plains to the coasts, we help americans invest for their future.

7:31 am
against right now. some of the numbers are daunting. you look at october 1st, fiscal year that began anew. the number of those apprehended at the border. gotaways on a daily basis are extraordinary and the number of countries represented in the groups are still as staggering as the year before. this is what republicans in the house have been waiting for. today they are on the case. we'll see how far they get with headlines from that committee hearing momentarily right here. >> dana: president biden set to deliver his second state of the union address tonight as the chinese spy flight and handling of classified document become the administration's latest crises. the president is expected to just look past that and talk up his accomplishments. the "new york post" front page sums it up as deflate of the union. i'm sure the white house doesn't >> good morning to you. the president is expected to state of the union speech is
7:32 am
tonight. an aide told me this morning he is expected to reference the chinese spy craft that recently was shot down but only going to be a reference and won't spend a lot of time speaking about it. we have a cement truck backing up. sorry about that noise. maybe it will be a quieter audience on capitol hill with the president talking about the economy, talking about jobs. in the himself present viewed what he will say. take a listen. >> president biden: i want to talk to the american people and let them know what's going on and what i'm looking forward to working on from this point on. what we've done and just have a conversation with the american people. >> but the polling shows americans having a conversation with 81% of registered voters telling fox they believe america is acting as a dysfunctional family. in the speech we're told the president will be talking about a lot of his unity agenda. not just the economy but efforts to address to cure cancer, the war on drugs when it comes to
7:33 am
fentanyl. veterans care and the need for americans to boost access to mental health services. a warm reception from house democrats and on some issues republicans will stand up and applaud. the gop says things aren't perfect in biden's america and see how much the president reaches out. the rnc says inflation, crime and border still an issue in their minds. >> dana: mark meredith at the white house. our regards to the cement truck. >> bill: perfect tunneling. former white house deputy chief of staff karl rove with us now. good morning to you. why don't we go ahead. you have a couple white boards. go ahead with number one. the finances. explain those to us as to what you expect later tonight. >> look, i'm looking for there is some tension in any state of the union address. particularly when you are in the third year of your first term. so is it going to be political?
7:34 am
will this be the soft launch of his re-election campaign or presidential? i think it is mistake for him to be political. better to be more the president than a candidate. the question is on the economy will he gloat we have a greatest job numbers in the world, blah, blah, blah or realistic that the american people have serious concerns about the state of the economy. despite the very good jobs number and finally is he going to summon the american people to do important things or just get a laundry list of things that he and his policy staff have come up that doesn't seem to last much beyond the night? >> dana: you are also looking for -- what you are looking for in the speech. >> remember the back drop, though. if you are white house speech writer or the president you have to be aware of what the american people think. 37% of democrats want him to run
7:35 am
again. 52% in october. people are cooling on him even in his own party. 37% approve of his handling of the economy. if he goes out there tonight and says i'm gloating about the economy. look at the great numbers. just over one out of three americans approve his handling of the he could than me. cbs. 61% say the economy is fairly or very bad. if he doesn't understand where the american people are coming from. making progress but a long way to go is a better message than look at the great numbers. fox, 37% approval on the economy. the economy one out of every three americans think the economy is going well. "washington post", abc, 41% say their personal finances are worse since he became president. the highest number since they began asking this question when ronald reagan was president of the united states.
7:36 am
one out of every 20 americans says my wages are rising faster than prices. six out of 20 americans say my wages are keeping the increases are keeping me level with the price increases and 13 out of 20 americans say my wages are not keeping up with what i have to pay at the gas pump, grocery store, clothing store for anything that i purchase. think about how that is a problem for the president as he gives his message tonight. >> bill: i expect him to come out and say our plan is working. let's stay the course. i think that's the objective for him. >> yeah. and look, that may be the way he goes. the question is what's the tone of that. when it's working great we begin to make progress but a long way to go. let's see what the tone is. second it's a gigantic bet. that assumes we have a soft landing, that we don't have any recession, and there are bad signals on the horizon. all the big tech companies came
7:37 am
in under estimates. we now have dovish members of the federal reserve of the strong numbers, the very weak numbers coming out of the tech company profits they're saying maybe we do need to raise the interest rates again more than we thought we would have to raise them. all of these things indicate it will be a dicey second half of the year. is the economy going to continue to grow without a recession pressure? i don't know. that's the big bet the white house will have to make. >> dana: i will make a comment here. you have somebody like michelle goldberg of the "new york times," a progressive left wing columnist who said biden is a great president but does vent want him to run again. that's the other thing. they are going into this knowing that the president is about to announce for re-election and many democrats don't want him to run again. give me an answer in 15 seconds. >> look, ironically if he announced he wasn't running
7:38 am
again approval numbers would go up. we think he is a transitional figure. do that. his numbers would improve. >> dana: that's not going to happen, i don't think. >> probably not. >> dana: unless we're in for a big surprise. watch state of the union on fox news. special coverage begins at 8:55 p.m. eastern. set your alarm and we'll be there. >> bill: president biden expected to talk about the economic accomplishments in tonight's big speech. will it resonate with struggling business owners or parents who can't afford groceries? >> he doesn't talk about the 13% increase in inflation since he has taken over. parents are having to make the decision do i fill my gas tank or groceries? it means serving veterans is what we do. it means if you need cash, you get more at newday by borrowing up to 100% of your home's value, not just 80%. it means newday has been granted automatic authority

>> dana: fox news alert now on capitol hill. live pictures. there is a house armed services committee hearing and they're talking to two border chiefs who initially were not allowed by the administration to testify. there was a threat of subpoena. they were allowed and they're talking about fentanyl and how much fentanyl is coming across the border. the arizona border chief right there, this guy, said they have captured enough fentanyl that would kill all people in arizona twice over. that hearing is continuing and we'll keep an eye on any news
7:45 am
for you. we have more from the chairman, james comer of kentucky, the chair of the committee. he said this. >> chief, we know that the majority of fentanyl was seized in the controlled environment at ports of entry. does that mean we shouldn't worry about the cartels going in between the ports of entry? >> i can tell you from my experience in tucson sector last year we seized about 700 pounds of fentanyl. to give you an idea based on the legislature alt, it is enough to kill everyone in arizona 21 times or half the population of the united states. and that was encountered 52% of that. the majority of that was encountered in the field. that is predominantly being backpacked across the border. the other 48% was caught at our immigration checkpoints, sir. >> dana: i said twice over. 21 times over. i think the point the members of
7:46 am
congress are trying to show is that yes, it comes across the border and in arizona and could kill every person in arizona 21 times over but it is going all over the united states and it is here and people are feeling it. it is a bipartisan issue. >> bill: new pictures from the u.s. navy. sailors pulling that spy flight debris from the waters off myrtle beach, south carolina. that's a live image right now. these are the photos that were posted to the twitter feed for the u.s. navy. we believe based on the time stamp for the feed this came out late on sunday night and that is obviously what we've been watching for days, right, dana? from the water it looks like they've got a pretty good handle on what is left of that balloon once they saw it hit the water. whatever was encased in the helium stayed on top of the surface and before sunset it looks like they pulled it into the boat. >> dana: fascinating pictures.
7:47 am
it was cold out there and our navy is there to make sure they could get whatever they could get. the search is on for what's at the bottom of the ocean now. >> bill: if there is more hopefully we get it soon. president biden will head out of town after tonight going to madison, wisconsin tomorrow to talk about his economic plan and how it is affecting american families. great topic for our next guest. chris joins us now, co-owner of a milwaukee restaurant called the packing house. in the family name since 1974. chris, good to have you on. good morning. what are you up against today? how is business? >> thanks for having me on. i appreciate the opportunity to tell our story and we've been in business for 50 years. my parents opened up in 1974 and we've seen a lot of changes in those years. we've seen good and bad economies. but never seen anything like this before. we have just increasing costs on everything from service ware like forks, knives, spoons to
7:48 am
all the proteins, beef, chicken, seafood to just labor costs. higher and higher. finding it almost impossible to hire new staff. luckily we have had a lot of good long-term staff with us for a long time and they are keeping us going. >> bill: same argument we've been hearing for two years now. we asked americans whether or not inflation is under control. on screen now this goes back a ways now. at the bottom screen not at all. 56%. so how does that affect you, chris? >> i would agree with that. that's what we're seeing. what we're seeing is not only that increase in cost but then of course we have to pass that along to our customers, right? four times in the last year we have had to raise our menu prices. every time before we do that i wait as long as i can hoping that we'll see the cost of goods kind of stabilize. it keeps increasing. what that does.

before, nobody in our building is making less than $15 an hour and those numbers just go up and up. we cannot find new staff to replace those either the staff that has chosen to move on or just to fill the gaps that we still have. we used to be a 365 day a year operation. we're closed mondays and tuesdays and shortened our hours because we don't have the staff to be able to open on the extra days. i have people already working 50 to 60 hours a week and overtime and time and a half and we can't find the applicants to come in and take those jobs. >> bill: you are a good guest on this topic and to think about the business changes you make on a daily basis. that's tough sledding. we wish you the best of luck. if you are in wisconsin or milwaukee stop by the packing house and check out chris. he has been in business since 1974. hope it stays that way, chris. thanks for sharing your story
