shot down on a saturday. >> steve: showed up at a diner in north carolina. mark meredith is live from the white house with more. mark, good morning to you. >> steve, ainsley and brian good morning to you guys. the president did mention china in his speech last night. critics say he should have played a much more prominent role in the state of the union address. of the president did make some subtle references to the chinese spy craft that was shot down offer the coast last week. take a listen. >> >> i'm committed to work with china where we can advance america interest and benefit the world. make no mistake about it. as we made clear last week if china threatens our sovereignty, we will act to protect our country and we did. [applause] >> critics argue the president waited far too long to shoot the device down. the president insists he chose to shoot it down over water to avoid any falling debris. house majority leader steve scalise says that simply does not add up. >> a balloon flies over the united states collecting data over every military base in

america and the president sits by, says he gave the order on wednesday to shoot it down but it didn't get shot down until saturday. idid he send it through the mail service? if you really gave an order to shoot down a spy plane on wednesday and didn't happen until saturday, have you fired every single person that refused to obey the commander-in-chief's order? those are the things that happen under joe biden. >> meantime, the u.s. continues to examine the remains of the spy craft recovery operations ongoing off the south carolina coast. china, for its part is commanding it be returned to them. a spokesperson for the chinese foreign ministry is quoted as saying the air ship does not belong to the u.s. it belongs to china. u.s. officials say there are no plans to return any of the materials to china and the pentagon says it's even having trouble getting the chinese to pick up the phone. in a pentagon spokesperson is quoted as saying we believe in the importance of maintaining open lines of communication between the u.s. and the prc in order to responsibly manage the relationship. unfortunately, the prc has

declined our request. now, the president is going to be back out on the road today which is tradition after the state of the union address. he is going to be heading out to wisconsin to talk about jobs and the economy. while he is out there, also doing an interview with pbs. it's likely he will be asked about china. we will see what his comments are a little later today. steve, ainsley and brian, back to you. >> steve: i understand that the out when comms team is pleased with the president's performance last night when he had the back and forth with the republicans. battleground state wisconsin. florida tomorrow. as you guys have been talking about. the big question, of course, will we hear any new foreign policy announcements in the wake of what happened? >> brian: what about re-election announcement? when is he going to make it official? any indication? >> their indication within the

next several weeks. know the president is still set to get his next physical a big part of whether or not is he going to be able to say to the american people that he is yesterday to run. that's going to be happening a little bit later on this month. possibly after that. there is still indications we may be a few weeks out. >> steve: mark meredith north lawn, white house. thank you, sir. >> ainsley: the president did make a few comments about china. before i came to office china was increasing its power line. america was falling in the world. not anymore. he never specifically mentioned the spy flight. and he said if china threatens our sovereignty, we will act to protect our country and we did. republicans are saying you did 8 days later. you shot it down 8 days later after it already traveled over all of our military installations and probably transmitted information back to china lower is former secretary of defense mark he is officer on

what he heard last night should make china nervous there should have been much more on china on what we went through last week. the debris we are pulling from the ocean and so on. the issue of china being the greatest strategic threat in this century is not going away. we need to speak more and more about it publicly and make sure we rally the nation. because what we are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg here. we are in arrow strategic competition. greatest threats are china and russia. democracies vs. autocracies of the world. >> steve: absolutely right. >> brian: there was supposed to be a big summit meeting with the secretaries of state. they reached out as you saw. the general reached out to try to get a dialogue going and they basically didn't pick up the phone. so they go ahead and spy on us. they lie to us about what it is and call to make amends or continue dialogue and then they

100 million americans every day. people need to understand that you know? and for some reason they definitely needs to ban tiktok in america. because it's just unacceptable what they are doing. >> ainsley: he knows firsthand. is he from turkey. he can't go back to his country. they revoked his passport. his family can't even talk to them. because they are -- the government has threatened to kill them or to hurt them if they do. he played in the nba. >> brian: he should be playing right now. there is about 20 teams that could use him. >> ainsley: and changed his last name to freedom when he became an american citizen. >> brian: see if somebody calls him. what the president said about oil is also so insulting. he said well, you know, these oil companies making more money than ever. i told them to drill more. i told them they're afraid that i'm going to shut them down because they don't want to build new refineries i told them you will be able to do -- we will need oil for the next 10 years. that's exactly what they are talking about. it takes five years to build a

refinery. >> ainsley: everybody just laughed. >> brian: you can't make genes or iphone without oil and gas. the president is not permitting any drilling. trying to discourage it in every way. trying to divest people from investing in it. trying to get a windfall tax making a profit because is he not allowing them to increase supply. what an insult that was to put that in the speech. >> steve: there is joe biden there in the well of the house of representatives at 80 years old giving the first state of the union during a divided government where the republicans run the house and the democrats run the senate. as the rebuttal, the republicans chose the brand new governor, 40 years old of the great state of arkansas, sarah huckabee sanders we have had her on the show for many years. here she is talking a little bit about the difference between her point of view and the point of view of potus. watch. >> i'll be the first to admit

president biden and i don't have a lot in common. i'm for freedom. he's for government control. at 40, i'm the youngest governor in the country and at 80, he's the oldest president in american history. i'm the first woman it lead my state. and he's the first man to surrender his presidency. to awoke mob that can't even tell you what a woman is. >> brian: right. that was the best line. because that's basically what they're talking about. i also would add to this. he keeps on talking about cutting the deficit. i cut $1.7 trillion from the deficit. that was all pandemic spending for the most part and under his watch, the deficit overall has increased from 27 trillion to 31 trillion. so he wants to continue to cut the deficit. but, yet, all he talked about last night was spending. tell me how you are going to cut the deficit. oh, i got it. you are going to tax billionaires and the top 10% are already paying 70% of all of the taxes for the entire

country. >> ainsley: i thought her speech was great. it made me realize, wow, she is -- she might run for president one day. >> steve: yeah. >> ainsley: she just became governor. she was the white house spokesperson. she wove in stories about our soldiers, wove in stories about her medical treatment when she had thyroid cancer and now she is cancer-free. talked about her own mom having cancer at 20. right after they were married and was told you might not walk again. you definitely won't have kids. she said i am one of her daughter and now i am governor of arkansas living in the governor's mansion. she really was optimistic and very hopeful and reminded all of us of the freedoms and what our grandparents fought for. what many of you fought for. it's time for the younger generations to step up. she gracefully talked about how she is the youngest governor but then wove in the fact that he is the oldest president. there is 40 years in between them. she wove in christianity. she talked about birth rights and freedom and she said for such a time as this. and talked about god and how

democrats are worshiping false gods, she said. >> steve: well, it was a very good speech. we will have kevin mccarthy. who was on division almost as much as the president was last night. he sat behind the president and did not tear up his speech. >> brian: right. for a change. it's good to have that change. >> steve: good to change the page. >> brian: kind of built up president trump when she talked about going to iraq. then again kind of a shot at president trump when talks about a new generation of leaders. but the choice that kevin mccarthy did when he picked sarah huckabee sanders is showing we're not looking to turn the page on trump. so there's a lot of messages in there. >> ainsley: hand it over to ashley for headlines. >> ashley: good morning, guys. nice to see you all three this morning. we do have update in the tyre nichols case. one of the former memphis police officers charged with murder. reportedly texted out photos of a bloody it tyre nickels after he was beaten during a traffic stop. at least five people received that text. according to internal affairs documents demetrius hali sent the messages to other officers

and a female acquaintance. meanwhile, seven additional officers are set to be reprimanded for their roles in the beating that resulted in nichols' death. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy landing in the u.k. this morning to meet with the prime minister and speak before parliament. he will also have a sitdown with king charles. this is zelenskyy's first official trip to the u.k. since russia's invasion and it comes as ukraine appeals for more military support. the house oversight committee will be holding its first hearing on big tech censorship and social media bias later today. it comes after the twitter files expose the platform's censorship of the hunter biden laptop story and the coverage of the biden family's business dealings. chairman james comer says three former twitter employees will testify. he says americans deserve answers about this attack on the first amendment and why big tech colluded to censors this information. so phoenix officials are sharing advice to out-of-town visitors ahead of the super bowl if someone wants to climb a cactus

after the game the city's park and recreation department has one word for them no. phoenix transit system advises against climbing poles on light rail stations unless fans want to turn into, quote: fried eagles. the super bowl airs this sunday on fox. brian is going to be live from glendale, arizona starting on friday. on the issue that matters to americans today, which is border security. listen, we -- it's about people and i'm an immigrant no question about that. nevertheless there is a crisis at the border that he has been ignoring for two years. and in last night's speech it just shows that he is still ignoring it and actually patting himself on the back quite a bit there on whatever progress he thinks we have made on border security. it's clear that i don't see it. i don't think our viewers see it. and definitely those on the ground like the chief of the tucson sector doesn't see it. i don't know if you saw his recent tweet. >> brian: i did. >> said that before it was unprecedented now he doesn't have an adjective to describe the situation at the border. >> this is the chief the town where i am where i live. i think i'm going to believe him. >> brian: absolutely. by the way that chief also said this happened when they talked to the illegal immigrants which president biden took over. they believe the policy changes

now time to come. then again, the democrats who saw republicans clamp down on the border and express concern and how it relates to fentanyl were called white supremacist conspiracy theorist. are you a white supremacy conspiracy theorist? >> you have to look at what i say and the way we acted, of course, that's not the case. i will tell you something about fentanyl. in pima county, the county where i live, it's the largest county in my district, fentanyl overdose deaths are the number one cause of death among young people surpassing car accidents. to call it a real problem is falling short of what the situation is like. we have families being torn apart by this crisis of fentanyl in our communities. and this is not just happening at the border. it's not just happening in my county of pima county. it's happening across the country. the president alluded to this and mentioned it briefly. but this needs to have way more attention and also look at the source where this is coming

from. and tackle that. >> brian: it would certainly be refreshing. do you think anything is going to get done by exposing this? are there any sober democrats who understand the president's mention of fentanyl, the cities being overrun by illegals. 45,000 here. they just took over a holiday inn where they wrecked the place, do crazy things in the stairwell and get drunk in the lobbyist on our dollar. $95,000 a day? does the president realize all of this is related? >> well, i hope he does. and maybe he does. it didn't seem like it from the speech last night. that's one of the most disappointing things. i can name a list of things that really he fell short on. this is definitely on top of my list. and i do hope that some democrats can see this as well. and i know for a fact that some do. they want to solve this problem. and the president needs to lead on it. it's his responsibility. and he needs to take the lead on it. now, one of the things that give me peace of mind is that we didn't have any more nancy pelosi sitting behind the

and because of crime, you are hiring security. and you say it's hard for you to retain employees. did the president address your concerns last night and do you think you'll see improvements now? >> i don't think he addressed our, you know, our concerns and stuff like that. i do not have security. i mean, i updated my cameras and stuff like that. and everything is up. gas suspect, flour is up. sugar is up. butter is up, eggs are up. everything is way up. when he says inflation is coming down, i have not seen that yet. we have some of the highest gas, you know, in the whole united states. our gas is really high still. so, i mean, he is saying that. and then there is over 10 million jobs people applied for businesses? i'm like where is it at? because our downtown looks horrible in the area i am and there's not a whole lot of businesses, you know. so, i'm like, okay. so this is hang. i'm like maybe somewhere else but it's not happening near where i live. >> ainsley: when you have to

choose to either increase prices or make your products smaller, what are do your customers prefer. >> our customers they said they would preferred a little bit smaller than as opposed to us raising our prices. and one thing that we do there is we offer a cash discounted. and so people like that. because then they can get a cash discount on their, you know, whatever they buy, you know, from their drinks to their baked items. so because we bake our own stuff control the size put less berries in. just different stuff like that we have to do to try to make things work. >> ainsley: make ends meet. right. robert, how about you? your biggest issue, is it inflation? >> you know, i don't think you can't talk about inflation by itself. small business right now is not just getting hit with inflation, you're also dealing with supply chain issues. you're dealing with labor shortages. at least in my area. and then on top of that, you are also competing right now with

>> steve: congressman steube, this is the first time you have been on television since the accident. i know you were up on a big ladder. >> i haven't been on tv in three weeks. glad to be on with you guys. >> steve: it's great to finally hear the story. what happened? >> well, i don't remember much. so woodie is better to tell you the play-by-play. i don't even remember being in the spot i was in. i was trimming trees on our house. >> and it was a big huge branch on one of the trees that got hit by the hurricane that we all experienced here in southwest florida and was hanging over an area that i needed to trim a very large limb and i was on extension ladder about 25 feet up with a chainsaw in my hand and started to cut the limb and the limb broke free, hit the extension ladder, ejected me up in the air and i fell about 25 feet to the ground. >> steve: okay. so that's from your point of view. darrell, you actually saw it because you were driving by. you were making a delivery. in addition to working part time for congressman berne buchanon also of florida.

you are also an amazon guy who just so happened to be making a delivery to the steube place right now. pick up the story. >> yeah. i have been to steube's house approximately 30 times. sometimes he will come out and we'll talk at the gate. well, i was delivering the package, and it was addressed to his wife. and i was standing there. i put the package down. and i heard chainsaw going but i didn't particularly know that it was congressman steube. i thought it was a lawn service. >> steve: yeah. >> so, as i began to turn away to head back to my vehicle i heard a limb cracking and i quickly turned around. it was a blink of an eye type of thing. and i -- as it was cracking, it hit the ladder and then, of course, steube, which he made the small eye contact with me

but it was so immediate and i kind of didn't figure that looks like "studio by." but i seen him through the branches. >> steve: right. >> he went upwards and it was pretty high and i really visioned that he -- that he had wings. he was so high. and like wings of an angel, so to say. >> steve: and it was lucky that you were there because you immediately called the ambulance and they were there in no time. congressman, what is the extent of your injuries right now because you're not in our nation's capitol because you invited darrell to the state of the union address but you have got to be down there for rehab, right? >> yeah. i just want to thank woodie for, you know, hea hearing the word f god and being obedient. god's hand was all over. this i suffered a concussion. i tore the ligaments in my neck. thankfully i was able to take the neck brace off that i had on

three weeks. today is three weeks from the day of the incident. i have a punctured lung so i can't fly. i won't be able to fly until march. i have another three or four weeks. i cracked my pelvis. thankfully i didn't require surgery. they put me in to try to see if there was some movement in that hip socket area where the crack is and thankfully there wasn't so i don't have to have surgery. i'm non-weight bearing on right side for another tree to four weeks. from head to hip i have got injuries. but through god's grace i'm healing everyday and thanks to woodie being there and seeing and being obedient and calling the ambulance, i was very quickly got. so best care that southwest florida sarasota memorial hospital. >> steve: that's great. darrell, the silver lining is you knew him before but now up become very good friends, right? >> yeah. pretty good friends with greg and his family. and i have been to his house a couple times. like i said, the biggest part is
