those popular safety net programs. mark meredith is live at the white house with more. hi, mark. >> good morning. president biden appears ready to rumble when it comes to the debate over the future of social security and medicare as you were showing. he mentioned it multiple times this week. republicans insist this is all about politics, not substance. the president was down in tampa, florida yesterday. his second stop in a battleground state this week alone. during a speech in tampa the president repeatedly attacked florida senator rick scott up for re-election next year. the president claims senator scott wants to cut both programs after he introduced a plan to sunset legislation every five years. >> president biden: maybe he changed his mind and seen the lord but meaning if you don't reauthorize it, it goes away. sunset social security and medicare every five years. >> the senator says he has no plans to cut either program. he is accusing president biden of twisting his words and

social security and medicare republicans are like you won't take yes for an answer. we told you it is not on the table. we won't negotiate over it and not on the chopping block in the debt ceiling conversation but a good talking point for the president as he took it on the road in tampa. the white house will use it even though republicans have said and president came away from the state of the union look at that. i negotiated this out of the deal on tuesday night at the state of the union and then hammers on it again. so it is very much a talking point as both sides do. this time the white house that's doing that. interesting i thought the piece was interesting looking how they try to go after governor desantis. a lot of folks say he feels like he is in a good position and let others stir up the waters and go when he is ready. he just got reelected to governor in florida. he is the kind of person that will want to have this conversation. the social security trustees tell us in 10 to 13 years it will be insolvent.
7:07 am
automatic cuts kick in. do folks want that to happen or have a conversation based in reality what we have to do. desantis would welcome that conversation with the white house. >> mike: you are a florida gal. striking to me that president biden was in the great state of florida where he could take aim at governor desantis and another famous resident, former president trump. democrats would love to have florida in play in the next election cycle. it has been red in recent cycles. >> oh yeah. we all know that was the best story for republicans on mid-term night of 2022. desantis commanding nearly 20-point win. house seats flipped to republicans, too. it looked very red on mid-term election night. interesting, though, will it be a situation where you have president biden if he gets in officially, former president trump is in officially. if the two of them are taking shots at desantis. those who guys going after someone they see as a potent foe

7:09 am
support for biden run in 2024 overall yet only at 22% and for democrats only 37%. you were with the president this week at the white house before the state of the union. he hasn't announced if he will run again. it seems like he is getting the pieces in place to do so. however, even the democrats say they don't want him to run. >> yeah, these are tough numbers for the white house and they come on the back of a slough of other polls that say the same thing. even his own party wants to go younger and do something different. i got the impression on tuesday he hasn't made a decision. i though tea to this point they had done everything that would put the pieces in place moving in that direction and he may do it. the people out their publicly calling on him to step aside and not do this need to remember the playbook of what happened when they did it with justice ginsburg. if anything, she dug in and said
