8:00 am
thank you so much. are you rooting for anyone in particular? >> mike: i'm a giants fan. i can't root for philadelphia. i say kansas city. >> dana: i have friends for both but i feel like because of jess watters, our great producer, i'm going to go with the eagles. i know will be disappointing to a lot of new yorkers and i don't know what i'm talking about anyway so it doesn't matter. we did plan for this. gillian turner is in for harris, "the faulkner focus" is up next. >> officials told senators in a classified briefing the spy craft had english words written on some of its part hinting they may have been western made. this is "the faulkner focus" and i'm gillian turner in for harris in washington today. officials say the spy craft was listening in on america's
8:01 am
conversation, equipped with antennas, solar panels and all gathering intel and monitoring communications. why did the administration allow it to hover over sensitive military sites? the senate panel got this answer to that question yesterday. >> one of the things i think that is different from our country than -- you can look at historical examples is we think before we shoot and in this case we thought before we shot. >> neither side of the aisle seemed to be satisfied with that. listen. >> as an alaskan i am so angry. i want to use other words, but i am not going to. >> this administration owes americans answers not only on what happened this past week but on what steps they will take to insure this never happens again. >> the truth is, we think we know what they were going to collect. we don't know.
8:02 am
that scares the hell out of me. >> we get more information by the hour now about what exactly these spy craft capabilities are. president biden, though, said he is no longer concerned about the chinese balloon floating above u.s. military bases. listen. >> no, look. the total amount of intelligence gathering -- [spanish interpreter] >> let's bring in republican senator ron johnson of wisconsin serving on the homeland security committee. thank you for being with us this morning. >> good morning. hope you are doing well. >> thank you. based on the intelligence you've seen about this balloon and the
8:03 am
briefing you got yesterday, was its presence in the united states, as the president said at the state of the union, a threat to u.s. sovereignty or was it, as he told telemundo yesterday, not really a major breach at all? >> i don't see how you can view it as anything other than a threat. what is frustrating to me. i attended that briefing. i fully understand there are certain things that need to remain classified and remain secret. but i think we overclassify way too much information. i think we keep way too many things secret. i believe truthfully that one of the advantages america has above all other global competitors we're an open society and we ought to be far more open. in this instance here, exactly what we know. from my standpoint there was no reason for that secure briefing. it should have been held as a
8:04 am
hearing in front of congress. the representatives of the american people where those representatives could ask questions and every now and again the people giving the briefing might say well senator or member of congress, that we should really can't reveal in open setting but most of this information ought to be made public. it should be made public quite a lot sooner. >> one of the things we learned, sir, from our capitol hill sources yesterday was that some of the parts that they have collected, that the f.b.i. has collected so far, were labeled in english. if it turns out to be the case as some on capitol hill fear that parts of this particularly the payload were manufactured in the west by u.s. allies or even here in america, what can the senate do about that? what options are available to you? >> well, you need the knowledge. but -- so i actually take those
8:05 am
briefings seriously and don't talk about what i'm told in those settings. one of the reasons i'm saying they need to be open, one of the reasons they give us the secure briefings is to freeze people like me from being able to talk openly about what i know so we can start discussing what the solutions might be. so, you know, i don't want to confirm or deny anything told to me in that briefing but i want to say that should have been in the public. i really did not hear anything that sensitive in the briefing that i don't think the american public should know. there are all kinds of leaks. the american public knows anyway. now we are questioning is it true, not true? what more should we -- more information should we have? we have a real problem in this country in terms of the administration not being honest, not being transparent, not being forthright with the american public. it is very difficult to understand what is true, what's not true, what is the true reality of the situation?
8:06 am
that's dangerous for our country. >> also may be difficult to advocate for more information sharing with the public when presidents current and past have been caught red-handed mishandling sensitive information. stand by and stick with me i want to bring in bryan llenas, correspondent on the ground in south carolina -- he is at sea. crews are still working the salvage operation there and he has new information this moment. hi, what can you tell us? >> hi, look, the f.b.i. says that the majority of this spy ship is still underwater. there are two separate areas that they are searching in the ocean in the area the size of 15 football fields long and 15 football fields wide. the majority of the spy balloon's payload has not yet been recovered and that's where they believe the majority of onboard electronics will be
8:07 am
found. they have been able to find parts of the balloon, wiring as well as a limited number of electronics. the f.b.i. has begun decontaminating some of these parts removing salt and sea water. so far a quote extremely limited amount of evidence has made its way to the f.b.i. lab in quantico, virginia for analysis. according to two u.s. officials to the a.p. talking to the a.p. naval divers have recovered potential high-value equipment and some balloon debris was intact on the ocean floor 50 feet blow. the state department said it was manufactured by a chinese company with relationship with china's military. more equipment is brought into south carolina including unmanned underwater vehicles and sonar equipment. during a hearing yesterday defense officials said part of the reason they did not shoot down the spy balloon early on over the aleutian islands in alaska was because recovering the spy balloon would have been
8:08 am
more complicated in those waters. listen. >> the water toppings off shore at the aleutians go to 18,000 feet quickly in the sea. the water temperatures are consistently in the low 30s which would make recovery and salvage operations very dangerous. >> recovery and salvage operations expected to be nearly impossible with bad weather this weekend. they do resupply because the water is rough under water for them to do the recovery. >> thank you, bryan. senator johnson, thanks for standing by. get your reaction to the reporting there specifically the defense department testified they did not shoot this thing down over the aleutian islands because the recovery process would have been too dangerous so they allowed it to hover over
8:09 am
u.s. airspace. was the trade-off worth it? >> well again, without revealing what i heard, i can say that what public reports i've heard including the one i just heard, is consistent with what we did hear. which again confirms the point i am making there is no reason the administration couldn't have had this briefing in public, subject themselves to questions from the representatives of the people. i think they would be doing themselves a service. i think by keeping the stuff all bottled up and not being open and trance parents they do themselves a disservice in terms of getting a full explanation out there. maybe some of the questions might be uncomfortable but i think it would be good to have this information by and large in the public domain and should have been in the public domain a lot earlier. >> i want to make sure i ask you about this the new subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government.
8:10 am
they had first hearing yesterday. the republicans brother witnesses saying the biden justice department is politically biased. no shortage of drama. >> right now we live in a country where many americans are afraid to speak freely. >> every day i woke up and i embraced being an f.b.i. special agent until things changed. the bureau's mission remained the seamed but principles shifted. they became politically weaponized from the top in washington to the field offices. >> you were also a witness at the hearing. listen to what you had to say. >> it is important to recognize corrupt individuals within federal agencies that i am talking about are not acting alone. members of the mainstream media, big tech social media giants, global institutions and foundations, democrat party operatives and elected officials. these actors work in concert to defeat their political opponents
8:11 am
and promote left-wing ideology and government control over our lives. >> sir, congressman raskin a democrat not on that committee said that it is actually you and your republican colleagues who are now weaponizing the federal government by virtue of holding this hearing. >> well, i weighed my testimony of the witnessing of the federal government being weaponized not only against the american public but myself and senator grassley individually during our investigation of hunter biden's laptop computer and their foreign financial entanglements. i started out saying the weaponization of the i.r.s. against tea party groups was where my eyes began opening and then as chairman of the homeland security and governmental affairs committee the senate oversight committee i opened up investigations and saw the
8:12 am
corrupt exoneration of hillary clinton, the corrupt investigation of the russian collusion hoax. we certainly have seen how the federal health agencies have been weaponized against doctors who have a different opinion how to handle the pandemic. doctors who had the courage and compassion to treat patients with their off label prescription rights. i've seen a lot and been right there in the belly of the beast watching this happen and my major point is these corrupt actors are probably leftists, mostly leftists, infiltrated every institution within this country and use their power to push their left wing ideology. twitter files reveal that. they control the narrative in the mainstream media, congressman raskin can get away with falsely accusing us of doing exactly what the left is doing. >> we have to leave it there. thanks for taking time with us. we appreciate it. >> have a good day. >> you, too. well, republican lawmakers say
8:13 am
they aren't backing down from defending parents who they say were targeted and in fact treated as domestic terrorists. the justice department says not so fast. plus this. four pinocchios for biden's claim for republicans slashing medicare and social security. >> he knows he is lying when he says that. no republican wants to end social security or medicare. >> president biden's critics say it is all a political play ahead of 2024. steve hilton will be in "focus" next. so it's decided, we'll park even deeper into parking spaces so people think they're open. surprise. [ laughs ] [ horn honks, muffled talking ] -can't hear you, jerry. -sorry. uh, yeah, can we get a system where when someone's bike is in the shop,

>> officials are now confirming more than 21,000 people have
8:19 am
been killed in turkey and syria following monday's massive earthquakes. tens of thousands more find their families living out in the streets during what has been a brutally cold winter season. there is a glimmer of hooch amid the horror. rescue teams pulled this 4-year-old girl from the rubble after hours of digging. just one of many miraculous rescues in recent days. officials say there may not be too many more of these. it is a race against the clock to find remaining survivors. that window is closely very rapidly. >> president biden: look, a lot of republicans their dream is to cut social security and medicare. well, let me just say this, it is your dream but my veto pen will make it a nightmare. i know a lot of republicans, their dream is to cut social security and medicare. let me say this. if that is your dream, i'm your nightmare. >> that's president biden continuing his claims the gop
8:20 am
lawmakers intend to cut popular safety net programs. "washington post" fact checkers smacked down the assertion saying there is no gop plan to end social security or medicare. this is yet another example in which democrats strain to conjure up a non-existent plan and earns four pinocchios. rick scott hit the issue this morning. >> we will not do anything to reduce social security and medicare benefits. number two, we will stop them from taking money out of medicare, money -- like what they did last fall of $280 billion take it out of medicare to pay for something else. i have a proposal to do that. >> new "wall street journal" op-ed is arguing president biden is taking aim at governor desantis of florida. the biden team wants you to know about his previous job. mr. desantis was in the u.s.
8:21 am
congress where he voted for paul ryan's budget blueprint. the blueprint called for entitlement reforms. mr. biden is warning mr. desantis he will pummel him with his history should he run. let's bring in steve hilton host of the next revolution. is all of this a fight about the substance of social security and medicare or is it the first fight of the 2024 political season? >> a clearance, it is not about the substance or the policy, it is about the politics. the one rule that you can be sure of in politics is that the most important thing for any candidate or party is to control the agenda, to control the conversation, what is being discussed. very difficult to persuade people there is not that many persuadeable voters one way or the other. what you can do is shape the debate and what the democrats are trying to do. every minute that our national
8:22 am
conversation is about medicare and social security, democrats are winning and republicans are losing. the smart strategy for republicans is turn it around on democrats and show the public what the future plans of the democrat mean. specifically massive tax increases. if you look at everything they are talking about almost everything that biden proposed in his state of the union would involve more and more tax increases. you have to be specific. challenge the democrats about the taxes that they are going to raise to make the cost of living higher for every family in the country. that's the way to fight this. not with endless denials but change the subject to something that is much more helpful to republicans. >> so on that, there is also the ongoing political battle in washington about the deficit up $2 hundred billion. president biden said this at the state of the union. listen. >> president biden: in the last two years my administration has cut the deficit by more than
8:23 am
$1.7 trillion. the largest deficit reduction in american history. >> a new oped says spending surges despite white house claims. what do you say, steve? >> look, he can barely spit out the words because it is such an absolute distortion of the reality. the only reason that he can even come close to claiming that is because of the expiring of certain pandemic spending. the real point for republicans there is an opportunity for them to make a case on deficit reduction and the debt ceiling that is positive and a big contrast with the democrats. if you look at what biden is proposing, we're now being told he is going to lay out his plan for dealing with the deficit. it is all about raising taxes. everything he is saying is about higher taxes on americans whereas the republicans can say look we have still got billions and billions of dollars in the
8:24 am
budget for pandemic spending. the pandemic is over. why don't we start by getting rid of that. that is a much stronger argument for the republicans to have than for the democrats. all biden is talking about is more and more tax increases. >> what we learned this week the $4 hundred billion in covid fraud which is discussion for an entire other story. but take a look at this. the justice department is resisting this request for more info about their treatment of parents who protested at school board meetings. judiciary chairman jim jordan issued subpoenas for the attorney general and f.b.i. director requesting documents and communications related to the agency's misuse of resources to target parents. d.o.j. fired back calling the subpoena premature. republicans are not backing down. at yesterday's hearing stefanik called out the administration for its response to national school board association letter that likened parents' protests to domestic terrorism. >> the letter didn't happen
8:25 am
organically. it was solicited by the white house and by the secretary of education essentially the biden administration laid the predicate for what it used to justify illegally targeting the american people and targeting these parents. it was a setup and the setup and the real definition of weaponization of government against the american people. >> what do you say? >> she is right. i'm pleased she is speaking so clearly on this. much more clearly than any other republican in congress right now. she also made the point very clearly that the f.b.i. directly interfered in the 2020 election to help joe biden get elected. that's an attack on our democracy if we want to use the language of the democrats. so everywhere you look it is clear the f.b.i. has been completely politicized. the f.b.i. the leading law enforcement agency is now the arm of the democrat political
8:26 am
agenda. not just the parents and election conversation that we just had, every day we learn new -- seeing new examples. just now we learned they are pursuing catholics because they are now domestic terrorists or something. it is completely unacceptable. what i can't understand is why there is no accountability being brought to christopher wray. he has presided over all this. i don't know if he directed it personally or presided over it and done nothing to stop it. he needs to be held accountable. >> he has been subpoenaed and see if he complies with the request for documents and communications. next time tell us how you really feel when we bring you back on the program. have a great weekend. >> thank you, gillian, good to see you. >> fox news alert now we're monitoring this. a big police presence outside of the former vice president pe pence's indiana home in carmel, indiana.
8:27 am
we expect according to reporting the f.b.i. will be searching the vice president's home in the coming days looking for potential classified documents. also this coming up. will he or won't he? president biden says he is still undecided about running in 2024. a whole slough of new polls show that voters already making up their minds before they know who will be running against him. stick with us.

>> border patrol agents and rgb face criminal migrants, grand members, hard narcotics and firearms. >> the chief border patrol agent. he has taken the reins in rio grande sector. over 500 people tried to cross the border into the u.s. illegally just on wednesday alone. meantime customs and border protection says apprehension of chinese nationals is now up 800% over the same time last year. national correspondent griff jenkins joins us live from brownsville, texas this hour. >> good morning. listen, where we are in brownsville literally feet from where i'm standing off camera the port of entry between brownsville and mexico here at the south-most texas college behind me is where the head of
8:34 am
the entire border patrol will make chavez the official rgb chief. let me show you what she is trying to get under control and testifying on tuesday. look at the video. i went out starting at 4:00 a.m. with the texas gps. we were chasing migrants from mexicans and others from south america. it is just a part of the challenge which you mentioned chinese. they're seeing a huge increase in chinese from the month of december more than 900 chinese apprehensions compared to just 64 in 2022 fiscal year. unbelievable stuff. what is significant about chief chavez taking over rgb. she was the chief in el paso. now let me show you some amazing video. fox sources shot in el paso when some 500 mostly venezuelans on the mexican side you can see and
8:35 am
u.s. side, 500 crossed into el paso because they were falsely led to believe they can get on buses headed to canada. chavez has dealt with it there and now coming to the rgb to try to deal with the problems she had in el paso here in rgb to try to get things under control. that's the situation right now. one thing that's really impacting things with this final thought. the aero stats coming down across the border making it harder for the agents to do their jobs. send it back to you. >> griff jenkins in brownsville for us this morning. thank you. polling headaches continue to pile up ahead of 2024 for the president. he said some pretty clear signals in recent months he does intend to run for re-election then said this this week. listen. >> i had sounds like you are run. >> president biden: i haven't made that decision. that's my intention but i haven't made that decision permanently yet. >> you have said multiple times
8:36 am
you have an intention to run for re-election. >> recent polling shows 78% of overall voters don't want to see biden run again in 2024. 62% of democrats feel the same way. new op-ed says under biden's failed leadership americans are poorer and left safe. border wide open and democrat led school lockdowns, all these crises have erupted on biden's watch but no interest in fixing them. let's bring in doug collins from georgia and jonathan kott senior advisor to senator joe manchin and gentlemen, thank you for taking time with us this afternoon. jonathan, when is the optimal time for the president to announce if he is going to delay or moderate the decision based on polling, what is the ideal moment here? >> i don't think the president
8:37 am
is waiting based on polling. i think the president wakes up every day and figures out how to get things done for the american people. he doesn't think should i run for re-election, what should i do on the political side? he puts his head down and gets stuff done and what he has been doing the last two years. he has had some of the most historic accomplishments of my lifetime and that's where he is more focused. he gave a great state of the union. i was watching it and jumped up cheering like i was at a jets game i was so excited by what he was saying. i think that's what he is focused on. he will go out and tell the american people everything they did the last two years and what they hope to get done in the next two years. when he feels the time is right he will announce it. he doesn't have to run a campaign and build an apparatus. he has that and he is just getting stuff done and putting wins on the scoreboard and what he will run on when he announces. >> that brings me back to my question, when is the time
8:38 am
right? doug, what do you say? >> i would say summer. >> i think it doesn't matter if he wants to run again he decides when he wants to. i disagreed. they are not -- one of the reasons why it is so disappointing for him is his numbers are terrible. if all you have to cheer about is things if you are a jets fan you don't have a lot to cheer about. i know atlanta sometimes in football. the state of the union was nothing to cheer about. repeating of things that will never happen and things going forward. when you look back on the accomplishments. open borders, things they don't want to talk about and frankly senator manchin is now very upset about the very bill from last year that he thought would actually help energy and understand the administration is taking it the opposite way. joe biden is not meeting with the american people on a level that they trust. they may have liked him at one point and voted for him at one time but the numbers are clearly showing that they are looking for a change and he is not providing the impetus to say
8:39 am
let's get going. i do think they look at numbers and they look at. him wanting to announce, he can do it in the summer as my friend said but also the question is who if he does it, who steps forward? that's the democrats' bigger problem. >> people worry from "the washington examiner" people worry about his age, appealing to his oldest voting block the new op-ed president joe biden claiming republicans are contemplating cuts to social security and medicare could help the country's oldest president with a demographic slipping away from democrats. jonathan, senator ron johnson told me two blocks ago that it is precise lay political fight now we're seeing unfold. the first political fight of 2024 in the argument back and forth about medicare and social security cuts. >> i think it is. i think the president is using republicans' words and their policy proposals from years past and unfortunate some of them don't want to own those policies now. he should go out and tell seniors look, i'm here, i will
8:40 am
protect your social security, your medicare, you paid into it. i will make sure you get it. this is an agreement we've made as a country to do this. and he is going to make sure they know while we have this debt ceiling fight coming up and budget battle that will come up around october he is not going to budge on those things that so many seniors rely on. >> we all know, doug, that slices both ways. the president has a very long voting record to be parsed by voters where he himself on some of the key issues over the last four decades himself has gone back and forth. >> he doesn't want to talk about his part on this as well. the bottom line is there is no serious player that is truly looking at a position of moving away from just doing away tomorrow with social and medicare or medicaid. there is serious conversation that needs to be had even by democrats and if not they're lying, that these programs have serious long-term fiscal issues. not taking them away from anybody.
8:41 am
how do you protect them and make them solvent and look forward to it? the president has made statements in the past. republicans made statements in the past. to use this going back to the pushing grandma off the cliff argument is repugnant. if this is the start of the 2024 cycle democrats don't want to talk about what's really going on. if you are out there with social and medicare and medicaid what is the long-term process for that and something that can fix it, not take it away but fix it. both parties have to do something about that. >> as both programs race toward bankruptcy in our lifetime. we have to leave it there. thank you so much for your time. vice president kamala harris is facing a question on tv about this moment. it was the embrace maybe even the smooch scene around the world. so many parents -- separately. parents are worried about woke

"new york times" headline out now has this. kamala harris is trying to define her vice president. all her allies are tired of waiting. we've seen a few cringey moments which critics have slammed as quote word salad. you know what those are. >> understand this for our viewers, g.t. the significance of the "new york times" starting to leak stories like this where
8:50 am
anonymous sources are telling you there is political blood in the water. "the new york times" is the print edition of the democratic party and what they all know when it comes to 2024 is kamala harris is the only woman in america that's polling behind meghan markle. there is not a path forward with her on the ticket. i actually do think the one thing delaying the biden launch. he does want to run again. he thinks he is the only democrat who can beat president reagan. thank you. and i think the only thing delaying it is whether or not kamala is on the ticket. i think they are trying to make that decision. >> it is the caribbean nations, islands nations in the western hemisphere, that's where the caribbean is, we're also in the western hemisphere. we announce today also we'll assist jamaica in covid recovery by assisting in terms of the recovery effort in jamaica that
