alicia: another high altitude object shot down over american territory after chinese spice craft downed off the coast of south carolina. the white house says the aerial object seen flying above alaska friday presented a regional threat to civilian aircrafts. welcome to fox news live i'm alicia acuña. hi, mike. mike: i'm mike emanuel.

the pentagon working together in hopes of finding more answers as to where it came from and what its purpose was. fox team coverage on the latest development with alexandria hoff in washington and lucas tomlinson outside the white house. lucas: senior white house official this object was not detected after penetrating air space in alaska. yesterday the pentagon would only say when it was detected thursday night and not where. >> it entered into u.s. air space on february 9th. we sent up aircraft to assess what it was. the decision was made that it posed a reasonable threat to civilian air traffic. the president gave the order to take it down and we took it down. lucas: right now helicopters used to rescue airmen, are combing the area off the rugged north of alaska where the object

was destroyed by raptor in anchorage. the temperature minus 20 degrees. at the white house john kirby was asked about the nomenclature. shot down near prudhoe bay, enormous 2,000 spy machine the size of 3 school buses that conducted a week long odyssey and this object was much smaller, small car. joining in search of debris, air force hc30 planes, helicopters have been launched from ford richardson under command of aiffler, here at the white house john kirby explained the nomenclature. >> posed a reasonable threat. out of abundance of caution and

waves and currents and the potential for those stronger currents to remobilize and move things and may make it harder to find a second time. you found it the first time and stirred up in a storm and might get buried. reporter: fox news can confirm that the navy has located but not yet recovered a portion of the payload that was attached to the spy balloon. it's the size of a bus and mostly intact. the payload is vital and that is where the on board electronics are. the balloon entire payload is size of regional jetliner weighing a couple of pounds. the spy itself 200 feet tall. taller than statute of liberty. unmanned vehicles have been brought in to map, tag and then eventually assist naval divers in pulling up the debris. according to u.s. officials divers have recovered high-valued equipment in recent days. the fbi says this investigation

is in its early stages, only a very small amount of electronics had been found, the balloon canopy and wiring those types of things have been sent to the fbi lab for analyzing. fbi agents on board are cataloging and decontaminating the debris from salt water and obviously from all the sea water inside of the debris and alicia they say salvage operation can last two weeks but who knows in the delay in weather. alicia: we are watching and waiting, bryan llenas. mike: with us mat gormann, and kristin hahn democratic strategist and blue dog coalition communication director. welcome to both of you. let's start with the friday afternoon shootdown over alaska here is president biden. >> do you have anything to say about the object shot down in

alaska, mr. president? mike: matt, the president and the white house all relieved they caught this one early? >> they should be. i mean, yeah, it's not over south carolina coast. at least it's alaska. our so much air space needs to be sovereign. if chinese spy balloons are going to get across the country, it's going to invite more foreign powers, china and whoever else to keep testing us. we talk a lot about the balloon and that's right but we also have chinese spy in phones with tiktok. that's a conversation that lawmakers need to have as well. mike: kristin, your thoughts on latest shootdown? >> whenever i see something like, i think we have really smart people at the pentagon and other places and they figure out how to do it. i think you're exactly right. you say tiktok is in our phones, it's everything and our lawmakers, elected officials need to get together and put all of this stuff aside and figure

out what is happening, right, china is -- is -- they have said, they are, you know, getting involved in our elections. like another thing. this is not a political thing. it needs to be resolved. mike: we have real adversaries in the world. >> yes, we do. mike: we saw hearings this week including one on is so-called weaponization of government. your reaction what we have seen so far? >> when the full force of the united states government comes down on you, you need a voice, you need an outlet. there was a syracuse study that showed the irs, entity that biden hired 87,000 for agents to disproportionately targets poor working class families with audits instead of billionaires or higher income folks because they know they have less resources, time, resources to fight it. if they are going to pick a fight, somebody who isn't a fair fight and i think when you have that sort of thing you need a voice, really investigation to why the government picks on those folks. i think it's good to have.

mike: okay, i want to play a clip from house judiciary chairman jim jordan and i will get your reaction. >> in my time in congress i have never seen anything like this. dozens and dozens of whistleblowers, fbi agents coming to us talking about what's going on, the political nature at the justice department. mike: okay, if there are that many whistleblowers coming forward, what's the impact, kristin? >> so stacy who is the democrat, the ranking on this committee said the right thing. she said he follows the rules, she said jim jordan as partisan follows the rules but this shouldn't be a weaponization of government, right. so, yes, congress has -- i worked in congress for many years. there's a very serious role that congress plays in overseeing and like making sure that the justice department and fbi do all the right things.

i just worry that this is going to be a settling political scores. mike: okay. >> yes, if jim jordan does it right, absolutely, do it. mike: okay, to 2024, why not, it's never too early? >> no. [laughter] mike: there's a new mammoth survey who would you like to be the nominee for 2024, florida govern ron desantis and president trump and vice president pence, nikki haley, mike pompeo, 4% others, 20% it's still early. >> i get very nervous when i see early numbers. look, i think this is why you need to run a campaign and no matter who emergings from the republican nomination they are going to be stronger by having run a real race with real competition. i will say, though, look i think

donald trump emergedded a little bit. you see the points ticking up a little bit. he rose 4 points from the end of last year and right now. mike: jeb exclamation point. >> question mark at the end of it. mike: what's the impact on governor desantis if he's taking shots from president biden and former president trump? >> you have desantis and trump and everybody looks at desantis right now. but there are things that you do in florida and i've worked for members of congress in florida and when you move into a national role and you're running nationally, i think some of the things that he's doing are not going to be popular nationally. mike: bunch of florida people may be raising their hands and how does the money get divided. >> like you said, way early. [laughter] >> exactly. >> i'm a texan. >> i get it. folks from the same state you always have divided loyalties.

alicia: new numbers from customs and border protection showing january encounters are up from last january reaching more than 150,000 migrant encounters. now our griff jenkins live in mission, texas with texas department of public safety chris oliveras with more on the growing border crisis, hello, gentlemen, to you both. griff: hey, alicia and, yes, those numbers are down significantly from december but yet the number of runners, the migrants that don't want to be apprehended are up. in fact, check this out. i was out with lt earlier this morning when border patrol agents caught a mexican cartel drone being flown on the u.s. side. lieutenant, tell me about what we have, how rare that is to capture one? >> it's rare to capture a drone but as far as seeing drone

incursions, it's a daily occurrence. they do drones to their advantage that way being able to bring down people or drugs. we can extract the data from the droop and see what kind of surveillance they are using against us and their tactics to try to facilitate that and hopefully capture more of the drone encounters. griff: though, we didn't get the smuggler? >> correct. it's very rare to see them on the u.s. side. for the most part in mexico flying the drones. it's rare to see them flying on the u.s. side. it's importance to having manpower, boots on the ground to capture smugglers or capturing in this case drones. griff: alicia, this happens every single day. had had that's just incredible and pretty frightening. lieutenant, i have a question, you are talking about the smuggler and not being able to talk the smuggler in one

instance however we do have video texas department of public safety chasing a smuggler, i'm going to just stop talking here for a second so you can listen to how this unfolded. it's actually pretty scary and then we can talk about it. okay. i guess we are not going to play that. but anyway, you can see how chaotic it is and lieutenant it's really frightening to know that these -- this is just one smuggler that we are talking about here and the dangers that not only law enforcement face but just the general public. >> right, it's very dangerous with the human smuggler because, again, they don't care about who they are smuggling or regard formatterring public and not only places law enforcement in dangerous situation but those illegal immigrants that are being smuggled. in this case we are seeing increase in human smugglers from out of town especially out of state. this particular instance the driver was from florida. profitable business to smuggle

people and drivers making their way to the border to smuggle people. of course, we see the dangerous high-speed chases and in some cases they do turn deadly. griff: you know, just picking up a little bit on that alicia because i've been out with you and going every morning at 4:00 a.m. on the highway chasing them. we are seeing increase, you mentioned the florida smuggler in this fam particular video. we are seeing more out of state smugglers coming in because the money is good, the cartels are recruiting. >> right, they are. they use social media. they have been using social media for quite some time to recruit drivers and we see increased drivers from out of town and juveniles and they have weapons on them. places a dangerous situation for law enforcement because they don't know who they are going to encounter in some of the situations. just extraordinary work by our dps troopers being out there and capture the smugglers.

alicia: lieutenant, i do have another question of men and women working along border. it's cold down there and the situation is not good but they are witnessing humanitarian crisis unfold right before their eyes and dealing with a resource issue. how are they doing? >> well, i mean, our men and women, of course, dps -- we have the support that we have from our the governor, from our leadership and being able to buy support for border patrol as well. we work alongside them every single day because we know how their manpower is not to where it used to be as far as being out in the front lines because they are processing but we try to do the best we can to supplement the manpower. they are doing great as far as spirits. they want to be out there and capture the individuals and protect the country and that's what we will continue doing until the situation actually has a good handle of it but until then, we are going to continue being out there and do what we can. alicia: lieutenant chris

olivarez, thank you both along the texas-mexican border. mike: af-- christina coleman jow live with the details. christina: attorneys representing the rancher george allen kelly describe him husband and grandfather, has no criminal history. they say he's innocent but as of now he's still sitting in jail charged with first-degree murder for death of mexican national found on his land. in newly filed motion to reduce or eliminate bail mr. kelly's attorney provide detailed explanation of what they say happened. on january 30th, mr. kelly hurried a single gunshot and witnessed horse running away at full speed. he saw a group of men that he did not know moving around trees near his home, mile north of

border armed with ak47 rifles, carrying large backpacks, mr. kelly went onto his porch with the rifle and in court filing his attorneys say, quote, the leader of the armed group of men saw mr. kelly and pointed an ak47 right at him. mr. kelly fearing for his life and safety fired several shots from his rifle hope to go scare them away from him his wife, animals and his home. mr. kelly took care to well aim over the heads of the armed group of men. now later in the day as mr. kelly says he was checking on his horse, his dogs brought him to the body of a man faced on the grass who had radio with him and tactical boots indicating he was possibly involved in illegal activity. mrs. kelly admitted to firing warning shots earlier in the day, he denies firing shots at anyone directly and he does not believe any of the shots could

expected in next 24 hours. fighter jet to shoot down. mike: more on the high altitude object shot down. joining me retired lieutenant general keith kellogg, general, welcome. >> good to be here. mike: latest thing that was shot down, why do you think u.s. officials have not been more specific about what it was. they are calling it an object. >> it's interesting it's not like a drone or a balloon or satellite but an object. that means they have no idea what it is. i think i go back to what i learned in the military years ago to first report is always wrong so we will take a day or two to figure out exactly what it is and what happened. but i think when you look at it

we have to make an assumption and the assumption, okay this is from china and that leads me to the next piece one from the balloon of last week, what's going to be our response. then what do we do? we need to do something. they are not answering the phone. lloyd austin tried to call them on the phone and they didn't pick up the phone at all. are we now in third generation warfare and we just don't know it? are the chinese or adversary using balloon technology to transport weapons that we are not really aware of and we are really behind on that and we need to figure out exactly what is going on and we need to recovering that device would be important and you have to put it altogether because i think we have been focused so much on the middle east and focus so much on ukraine and still not focusing on china and china is the growing adversary. mike: how are the two shootdowns different the one yesterday and the one a week ago saturday when we were on the air, what are the

big differences that you see? >> one without question is a spy balloon because when we looked at censor package, had communications and signals intelligence on it. this one didn't seem to have any but that doesn't mean it's not carrying something inside of it. we just don't know. it's very important when we get it and be able to retrieve any type of data. at least who made it. i think that there's two different ones and that goes back to third-generation warfare. are we looking at something different because the balloon technology has been worked on by the chinese for generations and they are really looking at ways to counter what we do in asymmetric way and it's very smart what they are doing. probe the united states, see what their reaction is going to be politically and militarily and then we will adjust from there because everything that you do in the military you always adjust to what is happening. my concern, again goes back that

we are fighting the last fight and we are not looking into the future. that's hard to talk about and think about. years ago i was with a great commander and someone smart and we used to get on the airplane and read scientific novels. he goes, sir, why are you reading science fiction novels, because that's the future. i remember going back at the time we had to read a book called highland, science fiction at the time is current today and i think we have to think like that in the military. i don't think we are doing it, mike. i just don't. mike: speaking of technology, the chinese are not known for inventing stuff, they are known for stealing stuff. how alarmed by the reporting that there was english debris from first spy craft, could this be american made or western made? >> well, it's not necessarily made but clued all the parts together. they have stolen our technology. you can't advance as fast as they did militarily unless they stole it and they stole it from

us. if you look a lot of the systems. when i was in the business world, our information technology branch would tell us we were getting hit 10, 20 times a day from china with the pings on our it network. they just steal stuff. i've seen stuff from the classified version of what they have. and what they have is absolutely stunning. they have stolen our best secrets and they haven't stolen from the military, they have stolen from unfortunately defense contractors and been able to get into that, who makes this stuff and actually penetrate those systems and retrieve it and extract it and what they have been able to gain from that 5 to 10 years military advantage. they put the new stuff in place based on what our technology was building into the future. mike: keith kellogg, thank you for your service and analysis today. >> thank you. mike: alicia. alicia: rescue efforts in turkey

as temperatures now below freezing in the areas impacted by the massive earthquake in southeast turkey further complicating rescue and relief efforts. at least 25,000 people across turkey and syria are dead and officials expect that number to climb. greg palkot on the ground in turkey tracking the latest in this tragic story, hi, greg. greg: hi, alicia, we have been on the ground for five days here and just seems to get worse and worse. the death toll does rise almost by the hour it seems, over 25,000 now. first word we have gotten of how many people are in the hospitals, 80,000 injured in the hospitals, astounding, government official, the destructive force of the earthquakes the equivalent he claims 500 atomic bomb. this is the worst disaster the region has seen in a hundred

years. it is well over 5 and a half days since the first quake and most people think anybody could survive. a family of 5 in one town was pulled out of the rubble. turk thish president erdogan has been getting a lot of heat in the last couple of days whether his government is actually up to speed in the recovery efforts and rescue efforts. we caught up with the turkish president, happened to be where we were today, take a listen to our back and forth. >> critics say you have not done enough, that you haven't prepared, that people are dying, that people are injured, they need more help. >> there are deaths, of course, this is an earthquake. >> could you have done more? >> there are injured people, we are trying to solve the problems. greg: we are trying to solve the problems, that's the word from turkish president erdogan. in one way they are scrambling to provide emergency housing for earthquake victims like the

center that we are at right now. take a look at what we saw a short time ago. the earthquakes have thrown hundreds of thousands of people out of their homes and the turkish government is setting tent cities like this throughout the region to help out but there are many more people without homes, that's why officials are rushing to cope. people are here because homes have been destroyed or damaged or they are just worried about the many aftershocks creating more threats. it's basic but they are shelter, some heat, food, water, essentials and companionship, for young and old, entire families. the folks here still reeling from the most horrible event of a lifetime. >> i hope and i pray that no one in the world has to face this kind of situation. it was a fine line between life and death. >> i hope god is helping us. greg: hoping that god will bless

us and everyone here. that's the word from the last gentleman. we spoke to another fellow had 15 members of family pass away, various villages but he's here, he's with other family members and everybody is coping, alicia. alicia: greg, quick question for you because the -- the level of need just almost seems immeasurable. we know that members of the u.s. military are responding but we also know that the united states has pledged 85 million in relief. do you know what that will go toward? >> yeah, the u.s. is big on the ground here. we spent the day on thursday with search and rescue teams from the los angeles fire department, la and fairfax, virginia fire department specialists are here and they are doing yoman's work hoping to

find somebody alive. you have those teams and you've got depending on getting very involved on land, sea and air providing chappers to get injured out of the areas and providing air for first responders to go in and really ready for anything that they can help with. this is a big deal. this is a huge disaster. turkey and syria for that matter, key countries in this region and it's a very unstable situation right now that the u.s. is trying to help with, alicia. alicia: absolutely. greg palkot live in turkey, thank you so much. mike, it's just -- just heart-wrenching to see what the need, the hope that the people have that help will arrive soon because they needed it immediately. it's so difficult. mike: turkish-born producer on our team delvin that the

when you get a special card from home, from someone you didn't know or didn't expect to receive on the special occasion it really makes a big difference for deployed service members and service members an va centers nationwide. alicia: you're a air force veteran yourself, thank you for your service. you're all volunteer, right? >> we are mostly volunteers. we have over 61,000 volunteers nationwide. so the great thing is you can volunteer with us from anywhere around the world and still provide support to our deployed service members and veterans. alicia: that's such a nice thing to do. is this something folks can participate in if they want, can they go to your website and still be a part of this? >> absolutely. we actually take valentine's. i'm -- up to valentine's day. they still love them even if they get them a little late.
