i am jon scott and this is expanded edition of the fox report. breaking news from canada at this hour, the u.s. military today shot down another high altitude airborne object over canadian airspace. the pentagon says norad detected object over alaska friday evening. this is separate from the shootdown of another object over u.s. airspace yesterday and alaska earlier this afternoon canadian prime minister justin trudeau tweeted i ordered the takedown of an unidentified object that violated canadian

airspace. norad command shut down the object over the yukon. canadian and u.s. aircraft scrambled and the u.s. f-22 successfully fired at the object. he tweeted i spoke with president biden this afternoon, canadian forces will now recover and analyze wreckage of the object, thank you to norad for keeping watch over north america. good evening, i am jon scott. continued coverage of breaking news tonight on the fox report. ♪ this latest news comes just one day after the u.s. military shot down a different aerial object on orders from president biden after it entered u.s. airspace over alaska. meantime off the coast of south carolina recovery efforts for the chinese spy flight are now on hold because of rough weather conditions. let's get back to lucas tomlinson at the white house the latest for us.

>> this is the third time in a week u.s. air force f-22 raptors shot down aircraft over north america, two over the united states and now over canada. the first time in u.s. history aircraft have been shot down over north america. go back to pearl harbor, this took place, very different with mysterious objects. the white house releasing a statement moments ago saying earlier today president biden spoke with prime minister trudeau on this unidentified unmanned object in north american airspace. the object closely tracked to monitor north american space over the past 24 hours. the president has been continuously briefed by national security team since the object was detected an abundance of caution at the recommendation of their militaries, president biden and prime minister trudeau authorized it to be taken down. president biden authorized the fighter aircraft to sign to norad to conduct operation in u.s. f-22 shut down the object

in canadian territory and close coronation with canadian authorities. the leaders discussed importance of their recovery and object to determine more details on the purpose or origin which they still don't know. president biden prime ministers trudeau commended both american command strong effective partnerships and agreed to close coordination. for the third time in a week u.s. aircraft and air force f-22 raptors shot down aircraft over north america. jon: but the timing is interesting with the chinese, the first chinese spy flight the one a week ago we are aware of. it was detected saturday, the president supposedly gave the order to shoot it down wednesday and then it was finally affected on the following saturday so eight days lingering in u.s. airspace before they shut it down. these two, the one yesterday over alaska, the one today over canada shot down almost as soon as they came on the radar. what's different?
4:04 pm
why are they getting more aggressive? is a because of the public blowback or do we know? >> it appears he was military is getting more aggressive, it's notable u.s. officials tell fox spy aircraft shot down over alaska yesterday the entered u.s. airspace undetected, first spotted over alaska. from the statement i read from white house what we learned earlier norad which said the object over canada was shot down using sidewinder missile tracking the object for 24 hours. that first entered u.s. airspace over alaska but not clear when and where. it's notable the last two objects so far the pentagon and white house are not describing is calling them objects. they both appear to have come into the united states undetected. jon: does that suggest there's some kind of stealth technology at work or is it because they are relatively small and just not something norad radars are looking for icbms and that kind
4:05 pm
of thing? not necessarily small flying objects? >> for decades norad mostly has been monitoring, airspace off the coast of alaska looking for russian bombers. those lumbering slow bombers much easier to detect on radar, it appears spy satellites have not been able to detect the objects coming from the pacific, don't know the origin of the last two objects but it's notable the spy loon and spy craft that was shot down off the coast of south carolina will you go today, it left china january 21 and spent a week over the pacific, not spotted until january 28 over the islands that appears there wasn't enough time to shoot it down. the other objects u.s. spy satellites are used to track missile launches from north korea and anything going boom, the satellites with detected and
4:06 pm
spy satellites constantly monitor military bases in china and russia looking at u.s. troops -- adversaries true movements in china and russia, any movement in ukraine as well but does not appear the satellites were able to detect the last two objects to even the spy craft earlier a week ago. right now alaska is using ground-based radar to pick these up when it comes to the curvature of the earth, the ground radar can only see so f far. jon: you are a navy veteran, you know how these things go, assuming the pilot of the f-22 or 20 choose that shot down both objects, they don't just show up a couple of miles away and pulled the trigger, they do a visual inspection of these things as they fly by in most cases, do they not? they probably have a good idea of what it is we are talking about whether a balloon or a drone, you described from the pentagon as being roughly the
4:07 pm
size of a car. >> we don't have a description of the latest object shot down over canada but the one shutdown yesterday described as a small car, different from the massive 2000-pound spy craft from china that did the week long across the united states, 2000 pounds, the size of three school buses, the object that was shot down yesterday over alaska was deemed to be the size of a small car. we don't know the details of the latest object but it's clear they are having trouble detecting it. one more thing if you don't mind, you're right about the private visual id, there's some talk is there any chance the u.s. destroying weather bal balloons? the object that was shot down over alaska, yes over the largest oil field in north america, some talk, nonmilitary objects, associated with u.s. government?
4:08 pm
officials agree there's no question f-22 should not be shooting down objects unless a close identification has been made in good reason to shoot them down. jon: we are glad they shut them down, it's just we need more information about where they are coming from. lucas tomlinson, live at the white house, thank you. national security and military analyst doctor rebecca grant joins us now. the chinese spy craft we saw a week ago was frightening enough or bothersome enough for now we got two more, one shutdown over alaska, one shot down over canada. given your experience, what you think is going on? >> this is quite an interesting situation going on and i think what we are seeing is we are catching a lot of chinese
4:09 pm
balloons and egg glad we have f-22's available to take them down. >> there must be some purpose behind it. i'm reminded of how the chinese claimed the first one was just a civilian weather balloon that had blown off course as if there is such a thing as civilian technology employment in china. when we shot it down, they got angry and claimed they were going to demand reparations and that kind of thing. the last two we haven't heard a peep from china. we don't know they originated there but one has to wonder given what happened a week ago. >> yes and you are right, the pentagon has not told us origin but of course it looks like china. we know china has an extensive surveillance, drone balloons, you name it. they got it all and we know the objects are in u.s. and canadian
4:10 pm
airspace so i expect will hear from more from the pentagon when the americans take the records from the second objects and when canada gets wreckage from what was shot down today. another thing, let's remember with great here is u.s. canadian joint control of their airspace is working perfectly. we heard northern command say we have to have domain awareness, military and all these objects in getting the correct response. they are identified in many different ways, visually, radar and infrared and electronic tracking so those pilots and men and women backing them up in u.s. canadian air forces have a good identification of what the object is before they clear f-22 to fire. jon: a joint u.s. canadian program and it has done its job in this circumstance. a few seconds, if you were the white house, what do you do, how
4:11 pm
do you respond to whichever nation put these things up there? >> the response is correct, intruding object, it doesn't belong in the airspace, down it goes. jon: doctor rebecca grant, good to talk to you. bad weather and doctor anna a pause on the recovery of the chinese debris from last week. divers collecting pieces of the craft since it was shot down off myrtle beach a week ago. brian nanas live in myrtle beach with the latest. >> so much of understanding the intent and capabilities of the chinese five balloon or spy airship is dependent on how much can be recovered off the coast of south carolina. yesterday according to norad they were able to recover debris as of yesterday but this weekend the weather has turned. wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour, a warning that means our

understanding according to u. u.s. -- a military official, they have suspended recovery operations at least until monday because of the rough water conditions. from what we understand so far, they've been able to recover a portion of the payload, the size of a fuss still mostly intact and this is where it is believed bulk of the onboard electronics are, there are two separate debris field out there, 50 feet below atlantic ocean, an area the size of 15 football fields long and 15 football fields wide. the navy uses underwater unmanned vehicles and sonar map the seafloor to help divers bring the bulk of the debris up to the surface. >> divers have limited amount of time the consent before they have to switch out so these instruments can be done for a long time and search and get up close and see things more

directly with cameras and take samples if not recovered directly and that's how they are directly deploying them. jon: given the news of the latest to undivided isaacs, there's no focus as why they allowed the sky blue to traverse the united states for weeks time and defense officials have been adamant why. they've talked about the fact that if it would have crashed, the payload is the size of a jet couple thousand pounds and could have left a debris field that was 20 miles square wife. they have talked about the fact that this balloon was traveling 60 to 65000 feet, and altitude not used by commercial airlines unlike the first unidentified object shot down over alaska friday and ultimately as we've talked about, they've talked about this idea the recovery operation would have been more difficult off the alaskan watters in the seat where the temperatures are in the 30s

and depth of the water are 18000 feet. that's the escalation we've had so far fbi says they have analyzed them to amount of evidence so far, most evidence taken from the surface of the ocean, the wiring and balloon canopy and stuff like that. the book remains underwater but most seems to be located. jon: i know you work for fox news and not fox weather but what is the forecast down there? is there a chance they will be able to bring up more of the debris maybe tomorrow? >> i would say from what we understood, the operations were suspended until at least monday. the forecast we saw saw five to 8-foot seas throughout this weekend is tonight is the worst with rain, it seems but that could change, this is the navy, u.s. military but from what we
4:15 pm
last heard yesterday suspended operations until monday when they will reevaluate the weather supposed to be much better come monday into the rest of next week. jon: they have challenges in alaska and canada trying to pick up the pieces of those flying objects as well because of the snow and incredibly cold temperatures up there right now so in that regard you got it easier. bryan llenas reporting from myrtle beach, thank you. u.s. army veteran lieutenant colonel darren joins us now. you've heard now we got a second or actually a third if you include the spy craft from last week, a second item shot down in canadian airspace. got one yesterday over alaska. when you put those pieces together, what are you thinking? >> thanks for having me on to me, it feels like we are being tested and primarily for our

response. the first one clearly we failed to would care not by the department of defense and exclamation for why we didn't shoot it down over one ocean after it crossed the entire u.s. also a plaintiff of the military, this feels like they are setting some additions based on whatever our response is. whoever they is, we know one was china and the rest we are not one 100% positive get or it hasn't been shared yet. i do believe it does feel like those conditions are being set based on our response, it could be determining what happens in the future. jon: just like burglars will probe an alarm to see what chance they have of breaking into somebody's house, this appears to be to your mind, the same kind of thing. >> these are not old tactics, these are pretty standard
4:17 pm
tactics used in warfare through history and if it does in fact turn out that all of this is china, we have to think about this from their perspective more than ours. from there perspective, they been at war with the u.s. in a variety of different ways. economics and trade. for a long time and this is just an extension of that and they may be just seeking to create a distraction of their own due to their own economic challenges, their own military challenges and the things they have going on domestically inside of china as well. we have to consider that and what we think our conclusion should be here. jon: so how should we respond? i guess i don't want to go out and say this from china yet, we don't know that for a fact but the balloon debacle a week ago you say it was wrong to let it traverse the entire continental united states. china was of course first claiming a weather balloon thrown off course, how -- we
4:18 pm
know antony blinken canceled his trip but should there be further punitive measures based on that one incident? >> i think there's something our administration needs to take into account based on fact and one thing we use in the military was the first report is always wrong and to wait for follow-up to determine what the facts are. i do believe in this case though that message isn't our response, the most important message we should ask. the message is one of strength and immediate reaction based on facts known and do our national airspace and we shouldn't concern ourselves with whether or not the first balloon over the bering straits was to deep to recover, the fact in my opinion should never have entered u.s. airspace in the first place so we need to deal consistently from a position of strength and display that not
4:19 pm
only because -- we don't know which nation is set for one 100%, you are correct but everybody regardless is watching and our response is critical. jon: i think a lot of people agree. darin, good to talk to you. thank you. eric continued coverage of this second shootdown of a mystery object over north american airspace continues in just a moment. ♪

shootdown. it's notable norad says the latest mysterious object was also first detected over alaska and penetrated u.s. airspace when it was first detected. the detention u.s. air force launched two pair of f-22 fighter jets, fifth generation aircraft out of the air force base in alaska monitoring the flight over canada where they link up with their canadian counterparts. they monitored this over canada and yukon territory as you see on the screen and an american f-22 that shot down the object in airspace using a nine side wonders and they cost about half a million dollars a pop. defense secretary hoyt often called the counterpart and says in a statement it's going to be authorities in charge with the wreckage and debris, unforgiving territory over the yukon, minus

20 degrees right now in uncritical territories, hard to recover this stuff. once again, is the second time a foreign object has penetrated u.s. airspace and one that was shot down yesterday over alaska and one today in canada, both penetrated u.s. airspace without being detected offshore. concerning development. jon: both the u.s. and canadian aircraft went after this because the f-22, where they different zones to cover? how does that work? >> the u.s. air force has experience shooting down the object based on the two for two average in the last week, it is clear u.s. air force will take the lead. fifth-generation fighter jets top-of-the-line fighter jets, very familiar taking down these objects so most certainly that

led to the decisions. jon: do we know, is recovery effort still going on at night or is it going to be suspended until daybreak? >> the shootdown over alaska yesterday, norad in a previous statement this evening said because of the rough weather minus 20 degrees, 20 degrees wind chill because of limited daylight in wintertime practically behind north, the days are short. recovery effort has been curtailed this evening. you had air force special operations helicopter and fort richardson. that's been suspended. you have a c-130 rescue aircraft, he will have drones overhead potentially and infrared, you can't see the military operate at night equally. there's no question now that nighttime has suspended across
4:27 pm
north american forces, four hours behind us, 2:00, you still have daylight but it's going to be a race to get to the debris field in canada and the matthew showed the yukon territory, this is very unforgiving territory. jon: not a lot of daylight up there. as you pointed out. his comments and joining us from the white house, thank you. former u.s. top gun autopilot captain tom joins us now. let's talk about the pilots inside those planes. they don't just pull the trigger miles away without seeing this, they've got an up close look what is brought down. >> things for having me, great to be here. they will have their rules engagement they will live by and in this last one where you have american fighters working with canadian fires over canadian

4:29 pm
ago was brought down with heatseeking missile but wasn't necessarily engine powered. there was heat, certainly on the balloon canopy had to go for the electronics, right? >> without getting too much into a classified discussion about how these work, there's enough of a temperature or infrared inferential to discriminate, target and continued guidance to impact. jon: former marine top gun by the captain tom, thanks very much. >> great to be here, thank you. jon: we are understanding the canadians will give a news conference in just a short time, coverage will continue in just a moment.

jon: so again, some kind of floating or flying object was seen in the skies over canada today. norad scrambled both canadian and u.s. fighter jets and u.s. f-22 that shot the thing down. she said it was cylindrical and smaller than the spy craft shotgun off the coast of south carolina last week. the item that was shot down, the object shot down over alaska yesterday was described as being about the size of car so we don't know yet whether these were carried by balloons, flying on their own power, some kind of drone, we do not know. let's listen to the question and answer. no. >> anything being done to monitor the results? >> let me assure all canadians

that canadians are safe. there's no reason to believe the impact of the object in canadian territory is of any public concern. the canadian armed forces with rcmp will recover and analyze the object. in terms of tracking and process going forward, i want to assure all canadians that this is the job of norad, exactly what norad was intended to do and exactly what we saw today occurring. the surveillance and analysis of objects concern in our aerospace and then decisions made by nationally and in this instance by our prime minister to take this object down. the process is sound and we will

of north carolina though smaller in size and cylindrical in nature. that is the information we are working with right now with further analysis, we will know more and be able to provide you with more details. >> to confirm, it sounds like it potentially was another balloon, is that what we are led to believe? >> i will refer to the item as an object at this time. i am a person that depends on fax and will not provide opinions until i can ground them into some sort of facts so i'm going to wait for the report i will be getting relating to the analysis of the debris. we have a cp 140 in the air, ensuring we are locating the

debris. we have close relationship now with public safety and minister mende chino as well and i are working to make sure the recovery and analysis proceeds as it must so we can get more information and i will come back and provide more details and explanation once we have that. >> thank you -- [inaudible] >> why did the u.s. fighters plane shoot this down as opposed to canadian? >> as opposed to separating it out by country, i think the important part is these were norad capabilities, a norad mission and this was norad doing what it is supposed to do.

fox news alert, it happened again after the shootdown yesterday by u.s. air force aircraft of a mystery object in the skies over alaska, another mystery object penetrated canadian airspace over the yukon territories. it was shot down also by u.s. aircraft under norad command. canada's defense minister anita addressed some of the questions of the rest a short time ago. >> recovery operations are now underway and will be supported by canadian armed forces in conjunction. this chlorinated operation will allow further investigation into the object. we have no further details about the object this time other than it appears to be a small cylindrical object smaller than

the one down off the coast of north carolina. jon: when she says north carolina, she obviously means south carolina. the incident last week when the chinese spy craft was shot down off myrtle beach. now this one was described as a cylindrical, she stopped short of saying it had been carried off by a balloon but indications are starting to come to the floor that suggests that's what it was, a balloon flying at lower altitude, not 60000 feet this time but maybe 40000 feet. it was brought down by f-22 again from the u.s. but operating under norad command norad, the agency that protects all of the airspace for the north american defense command, that's what the acronym is all about.
4:56 pm
two objects, one over alaska, one over canada shot down in the last 24 hours, we don't know where they came from. north korea, perhaps russia, the usual suspect but they are expecting to be able to pick up the debris from the snowfields in alaska and yukon we might get some answers then. i am jon scott, our coverage will continue in just a moment.
