mike: fox news alert, i'm mike emanuel. lucas tomlinson live at the white house. lucas, good afternoon. >> good afternoon, mike, faa issued a notice the to airmen closing air space in the northern part of lake michigan near michigan upper peninsula. don't know the reasons why. only reason national defense air space given the past 24 hours the shootdown of the mysterious object in canada and also seemingly false alarm in montana, looks like this is out of abundance of caution but there is an airborne refueling tanker from the u.s. military

seen? >> yeah, well, obviously the latest sightings and actions taken by the military are concerning and the pentagon rightfully is being tight lip right now. what i say is this, if we go back to the initial incursion into our air space by the spy balloon from china we failed to prevent that from entering our sovereign air space and as a result we were tested and now the world stage knows that we failed. that the president and the administration did not have the political will to take action to prevent this from coming over our country and spending a long amount of time. now as a result intelligence officials are scrambling to find every possible component of that device to find out exactly what its capabilities were and what if anything it was transmitting live back to china.
10:10 am
with respect to the additional objects, we don't know if they're associated with china, we don't know if they're associated with another state actor or nonstate actors and what my concern is this, is that because we failed to take action on that first balloon, do others now have an appetite to continue to test us and test us more aggressively. mike: interesting point. we had anomaly evidently on radar over montana yesterday at some point and now we've got some flight restrictions over northern michigan. we are checking that out. any surprise that is there could be other flight restrictions out of abundance of caution? >> yes, so these are temporary flight restrictions that could be stood up very quickly by the faa and it is possible if they pick up any more anomalies on radar around the u.s. to clear that air space in the event that they need to scramble fighter jets to identify and take action, you do not want any

10:12 am
for a reasoning and that is to protect our overall national security and the american public. mike: we heard bipartisan frustration by lack of answers from the biden administration. do you think they will feel the pressure and start getting more answers about what they know? >> well, i think they are feeling the pressure and unfortunately i think the latest actions that we see them taking in terms of being more aggressive with the objects is in response to that pressure because i think there has to be acknowledgment by the administration that they failed during that first incursion. now, the military and the administration should not react based on consensus from the american public. like i said, the military needs to act unilaterally and take action aggressively so to prevent for any threats against the homeland. so this is not a popularity contest. the president needs to start taking our national security seriously, the administration does not have a good record and good story to tell with anything
10:13 am
associated with our national security and unfortunately we are seeing that story line continue and the world is becoming more and more aware of that weakness. mike: if the investigation points to all this coming from china, what's the response from the united states and do we need to shift assets military assets to defend our air space? >> well, the first thing we need to do through the administration is identify the problem correctly. china is not a competitor of the united states. they're not a fair competitor, right, they steal our intellectual property, devalue their currency, we know the story. they are an adversary and we need to treat them as such. no strategy is going to be successful if you're not identifying the problem correctly because you're not going to bring the correct resources to bear to -- to conquer the challenge that we are facing. look, china is an adversary. we need to get our military more

involved and step up our use of technologies and we need to sanction them like they've never been sanctioned before. we also need to separate ourselves in the global markets from china the best that we can. we have become way too dependent on an adversary with respect to our economics and economics is a vital part of our national security. so we need to start making space from them, creating some distance through our connections and our business dealings and we need to kind of isolate china more and more. >> just want to update our audience, the faa has canceled temporary restrictions over northern michigan, so we just want to bring that to our audience as quickly as possible. let's shift gears. today is super bowl sunday. the united states of america will be watching this super american event as will much of the world. what kind of security preparations go into preparing for this massive event?
10:15 am
>> well, mike, you've got another large event tied to the national fabric of our country and related directly to our overall national security so the security for this event has historically always been taken very seriously. as a matter of fact, it's designated a special event by the department of homeland security and what that allows is it allows the fr -- federal government to bring vast resources to this event, participate in the security along side state and local officials in and the nfl and involve significant restrictions since we are talking about air space concerns. the air space over the super bowl will be restricted through temporary flight restricted zone that will clear the area of all air traffic and help authorities detect any anomalies. we will also see very strict guidelines on the ground in terms of screening, everything
