both buildings easily accessible to the public and did not require special access. a student recording this terrifying video from his dorm as he watched the students running for their lives on campus. another student said his friend so the whole thing unfold. >> i know that he left his phone in the cafeteria because he ran out so fast. purity so multiple people get shot. most of the people i've heard talk to me personally about it told me they were in the union when the shooting happened and that's when they saw it. speak with the children place order has been lifted for the michigan's students and the surrounding community but the classes activities have been suspended 48 hours. the police are still working to uncover a motive in the senseless shooting. all five surviving victims remain in critical condition at a nearby hospital. we will bring you updates as they come throughout the morning, todd, ashley. >> ashley: brooke, we bring in

a homicide detective ted williams. thank you for being with us this morning early on a tuesday. this is a strain situation 43 years old and no affiliation with the school so what happened here? how hard will this be for the investigators to find a motive because it doesn't make sense or lineup, none of it makes sense but it doesn't line up with what we usually see. >> good morning, ashley, todd, certainly shocked and in morning. and really, now that the shooter have been identified by law enforcement, from his body and self-inflicted wounds. so, it's not a motive but the only way to do that is to talk to people in the neighborhood and look at the relatives to check that out and look at

social media site. we always unfortunately in these times want to know the motive. what would make a 43-year-old man walk into a hole and kill two people? and then go next door to the university center there and shoot and kill another person. then put a statement out, michigan state university? i have to tell you guys law enforcement was on the scene and on this right away. they acted appropriately and they've possibly saved a lot of lives by getting this guy off of campus of campus. >> todd: that was my initial instinct the law enforcement didn't seem to say that something else stood out presumably. because of the times we all had

active shooter training. elementary to middle to high school. so they knew what to do in a situation like that. do you think that saved lives as well? >> absolutely, todd. we have learned over a period of time because we have so, so many of these mass shootings around the country. and universities and high schools and elementary schools, they have now all put in place a drill. they know what to do immed immediately. and in the circumstances at michigan state, they acted immediately and notify the students and put it in place. this was, you don't ever want this to happen to the country but if it is going to happen, keep you want this kind of scenario to take place to possibly save lives. >> ashley: ted williams, thank you so much for being with

us early this morning for this very tragic story. we appreciate your time. >> god bless you. >> ashley: one person dead and seven others heard after a violent rampage by a man driving a u-haul truck in brooklyn yesterday. spirits shocking surveillance showed a man strike to man on a bike while pedestrian barely drives out of the way of the truck in time on the sidewalk. 63-year-old is in custody with a string of attacks. his family says he has a history of violent behavior and mental illness. the suspect's brother-in-law said he's schizophrenic, crazy and always say he will probably kill himself one day. that is the way i saw it. he just doesn't know how to lead a normal life. according to las vegas court records, sentenced to 27 months in prison for two separate stabbings in 2017 and 2020. he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery in 2005. >> todd: take a look at shocking video out of portland,

this fentanyl is unbelievably addictive and causing psychosis. there are places in portland that looked like a third world country and we have people on the streets. so i can't underscore that enough here there is no exaggeration what i'm saying. >> ashley: would you say the last year or so what you have seen and shown in the video has gotten worse? >> absolutely. >> ashley: it just continues to get worse. do you put blame on open border policies allowing for fentanyl to come into the country? >> yeah, we have a lot of a high five that goes from mexico all the way to washington and there is drug traffic going and a lot of people come out of the country like honduras dealing drugs. the cartel is very much here. i will say we've had drug problems for quite some time and it is a vacuum that is created.

it is really scary out here. but of course, oregon, in fact we've made it so profession of drugs it is legal. so the problem is, we are not prosecuting people. voters voted and it's almost like de facto criminalization and the state did not implement the rehab and the mental health that they promised us. so now, they are not being prosecuted or forced to go to rehab. so we have this mayhem on our streets and the insanity and immunity of these people is something that is so hard to explain to some body and you are showing it on the screen though and this is going on in our city. >> todd: this is not just portland but nationwide problem. 2022 fentanyl to skyrocket up

>> ashley: it is absolutely insane and i don't know if anyone understands it. tell me how you found out about what was going on? >> and covered something called the monitoring unit in 2004 by talking to people because i was an advocate for parents and teachers since the mid-90s. and i said, you know, that is ominous. so, i started looking into it and i foiled the data in the monitoring unit, which is an agency at the d.o.e., no one would give me anything. they said it was all social security numbers. okay, so i started asking people, who is in charged? and i found out the d.o.e. called the office of personnel investigation. and what they do is they have employees of the d.o.e. crew,

forgive me, call themselves investigators, but they are not. so, they work for lpi. when they get an accusation from anybody, it doesn't matter who -- well, the principal sent to them a complaint that could be made by anybody that this employee, that employee did something wrong, then they start putting the code on the file. and i think that is outrageous, like rachel said because no one is told why it is there and what they did and most times in my experience, the person did nothing wrong here this is simply made up. as far as the wonderful, terrific teachers who couldn't, wouldn't or just didn't get the

for first responders, paramedics, emts to get hit as i believe you were at one point especially responding, a photo of you. so when it comes to the low pay, the dangers that you face, now they want to strip you with body cameras. how are you guys going to sustain this? what is going to happen if you say, we are not going to do this? what will happen to the state? >> with respect to the body cam issue, let the legislative politicians out on the street to work. i'm here to continue to advocate for a fellow brother and sister paramedics and responders. we do need to have protection from our cities municipalities and lawmakers continue to have that protection and continue to do our job and serve the public. we have a passion to do this job answer. it takes a special person to do this job. >> ashley: illinois emt were asking why they leave the drop of 60% are burned out.
