investigators have been working through the night looking into this suspect who has not been named to try to figure out why it is that he came to campus and shot these individuals. this all happened a little after 8:00 p.m. last night when people two people were killed in berkeley hall in michigan state's campus. minutes later a person shot and killed in union building a half mile down the road both buildings were open to the public and the entire campus went into lockdown after the reports of shots fired. you can see this video of some students running from a building as dozens of officers moved in and students hunkered down in dorms email from michigan state saying shooting on campus. by that point we were on our way to pick up a friend from one of the dorms on campus. at that point nobody knew what was going on. everybody was confused. we wanted to help save everybody

that we could. at least help protect our friends. i know from one other kid that i know he left his phone in the cafeteria because he ran out so fast. he said he saw multiple people get shot. >> police released this picture of the 43-year-old suspect entering one of the buildings. several hours later when officers found the man about five miles from campus, he reportedly took his own life. as of a few hours ago, his five surviving victims remain in critical condition. officials have not released the names or details of any of the victims. we are expecting to learn more about their condition school officials will be given next update on where things stand. katie, steve, and brian. >> steve: authorities know the identity of this person. have they gone to his house yet to look for clues, gather up all of his digital stuff? that is one of the first steps they take in these situations combing through digital footprint to find any kind of indication that could have

balloon. this one that they shot off the coast of south carolina, they started tracking it as it lifted off from island in south china in late january. and then when it drifted over the aleutian islands gave the shoot down order. >> brian: that's not true. might have alerted the president of the united states. in montana, the journalist took the picture calling norad. norad feels the pressure. then all of a sudden it becomes a national program. general keane even last week said it was the 25th when they launched it. they had all this information. >> steve: the federal government was monitoring it when it duke off. that's what i just said. so they have been watching it. they have you had coo have shot it down over the aleutian islands, they did not. the president ultimately gave the order. what's interesting and apparently they picked up a bunch of the wreckage. they got all the good stuff now.

gotten. i will say that the firefighters in that community bore the brunt of this and deserve a lot of credit. do you know who doesn't deserve the credit is our federal government and the transportation secretary pete buttigieg. he will talk about diversity in the construction workforce, obsess over climate change. do you know what is not going to kill people in this community or other communities like it over the course of their lifetime is going to be climate change. but, you know what actually is dangerous for those communities? the risks of cancer from chemical spills. we need to learn more about this particular situation. but i think that that's one of the problems with the focus of our leaders. even as it relates to environmental issues is if it does not relate to their narrative of existential risks from climate change or diversity in workforces for that matter. it doesn't get the level of attention that it needs. this is actually a tragic incident and should be a wake-up call. so far their response suggests that they are still asleep at the switch. >> steve: unfortunately, i have read in the local papers out there, vivek, that apparently

can fish are being found on waterways, they're dead. people are -- have burning eyes and all sorts of problems. some have gone home and it just doesn't smell good. like an acid smell. people would like them to go back home. but if i was living in one of those houses i'm not going home until it's completely whose whosed down you know what? i have been in it and it's safe. we haven't seen it yet. >> i think it is perfectly fair. put yourself or myself in those shoes. this isn't that far from where i am. for the people in that community it's a tough situation where they say there is supposedly over 3,000 fish in a have died but, yet, they are saying that the water is still clean. i think especially when you see leadership in charge, people like secretary buttigieg, who are looking in a different direction at social issues when they make a proclamation or federal leaders make a proclamation it's safe. people have reason to longer accept that and be skeptical themselves. i hope this community is able to get through this.

my heart goes out to them. >> steve: switching gears. i know you have had a couple of books. recently though, people are saying, you know, vivek, you should run for president and i know you're chewing on it right now. when might you have any sort of an announcement? >> so i'm seriously considering it. i have been very transparent about that. in fact, i expect to make a decision in the relative near term. but, to me, this isn't a question about the who. sometimes i think the conservative movement in the republican party even we obsess too much over the question of the who without enough asking the question of the what and the why. what do we stand for? and i just see an opportunity right now in america to answer the question of actually what it means to be an american today. you ask most people my age that question, you get a blank stare in response. i think we have a chance to revive the ideals that this immigration was founded on and use that to dilute the woke agenda to relevance. that's what i have been talking about in my books last few years.

the government are the ones who orunthe government. taking on china. if we are actually debating those ideas and actual vision for this country. this cycle could be a good thing for this country. the more people that talk about themselves or their biographies the less effective that's going to be for the country. my focus is going to be making this -- should i enter this race, making this campaign a movement of ideas. a cultural revival in this country. debate those questions in the open and i think that's exactly the kind of debate we need to have. >> steve: officially so far now we have two candidates. we have got former president donald trump and now we have got nikki haley throwing her hat into the ring. how do you, you look down the road, how do you see the interaction between the former president and the new people going after the nomination as they say, okay, i'm in it to win it as well? >> so, look, he is a friend of mine. i think he is a friend of many people that are going to be in this process.

it should be less about anyone criticizing what he has done. to the contrary, you take someone like myself, i wouldn't even be considering this if it weren't for the fact that someone like him as h. come in as an outsider, really shaken things up and in my opinion done so successfully in 2016. the question now is where we go from here. i think there is going to be a choice about whether or not there is going to be a criticism of the other side or whether the conservative movement is actually going to offer an affirmative alternative. a positive vision for where the country goes. and i think people are hungry for that. whether they are black or white or democrat or republican. i think most people in this country agree on those basic principles and rules of the road. i think there is an opportunity for the republican party to rise to the occasion and fill that vacuum answering the question of what it means to be american and actually lead the way. and if we do that, i'm confident that whoever the nominee is, this may not even be a close election in 2024. i think this could be a 1984 moment for the country and i hope that's uniting. that is part of what motivates

very quickly where all the treats are. harry, so we do a number of enrichment activities with them. that show off a number of skills and painting happens to be one of their absolute favorites. >> steve: what you are doing is putting the paint on the floor and then the otter goes through it and then goes over to the canvas. sarah, do the otters know they are painting or do they think they are just playing with you? >> honestly? i'm not sure. [laughter] >> but i do know whatever it take to get the treat, right? >> brian: looks like they are heavily influenced by leroy knee man. >> katie: very motivated by. this. >> katie: how did you come up with this idea? you did it last year for the first time and how did you decide you paint and to make valentine's days for folks? >> sure. so, painting as i mentioned is one of our enrichment activities

to do with them. like a number of zoos and aquariums you will see elephants painting and a number of other animals painting so i said why not try with the otters. >> katie: debate whether they are paws or feet. >> i think they are pretty interchangeable. i tend to use the word paw. they do have an adorable little paw print. these guys they have fingers. they have very little webbing between their feet so when they make a paw print it looks like a little handprint. >> steve: when i was growing up in kansas, we had a little creek that ran through our property and actually had otters there. they are adorable. how do the people at the local hospitals who are getting the otter grams, how are they reacting? >> oh, they absolutely love it. our education coordinator naomi, she says that -- good job. they said that people have been calling us and calling in. quite literally like crying
