overwhelming shelters and losses. we are trying to close four gaps in the barrier exploited by the cartels for years. the fast moving waters pose a risk to migrants and the agents whose job it is to save them. closing the four gaps does little to stop the bleeding. the region has seen fern 760,000 migrants since october in less than four months. 300,000 of those are known gotaways. they escaped into the u.s. and no longer on our radar. >> dana: a surge isn't stopping. the u.s. has seen nearly 2500 illegal crossings per day. that means we're already on pace to break last year's total. exploiting all of this is the cartels. they are using the crisis as cover to smuggle fentanyl and other deadly drugs. fentanyl deaths doubling over the past four years. experts say it is the direct result of an unchecked border

the reason we want to come from we're 160 miles north in phoenix get there in two hours and 30 minutes. the super bowl is america's greatest event every year. if we can do that so well every year why is this such a crisis and so unchecked for so long? that's why we're here. you will meet the mayor and we'll talk to the sheriff today, the county commissioner. the head of the hospital here. the head of the food bank. all the local resources strained to the limits here and you will meet a border patrol agent who recently retired and his story for turning his back on his own career will stun you. 27 years in, right now he is on the other side. you will hear him shortly. live from yuma, dana, when we continue. >> dana: lots of other news, too. watch this here. >> we will dive into this. we don't know right now. we'll never talk about what precautions we'll make at any base at any time but we do what

nikki haley announced she will run for president. that announcement coming in full tomorrow. we know she is going to. how do you assess the race at this point and somebody like nikki haley getting in? >> first of all she has a video up already talking about it. it is interesting. she is talking about one, the experience of growing up as the daughter of indian immigrants in the united states and how they gave her a powerful, intense affection for being in american and what it means and why she wants to defend the values that she and her family have benefited from. she talks about a new generation of leadership and interesting to me is the video makes it clear when she ran for state representative and governor, she was the anti-establishment candidate. she was there to shake up the good old boys network in south carolina and did so as a governor. interesting points to make in her initial video. she will be here in austin, texas on the 24th of february at

border patrol resources by sending across large groups of give-ups, the 310,000 that was mentioned this last federal fiscal year. what you are not looking at is the 28,000 gotaways in our county alone where cartels tie up all the border patrol resources with large amounts of give ups and it opens up the border so they can actually funnel in those that are smuggling narcotics. >> bill: it is devios. >> it ties up our resources and why we're seeing such a large amount of fentanyl throughout the whole u.s. we've never seen it this bad. >> devious and devilish. >> human life is nothing to them. it's a commodity. all these numbers are paying $6
