february 3rd, just one day before that massive chinese spy craft was blasted out of the sky off the coast of south carolina. as you mentioned a town hall held here last night. norfolk southern it did not attend over fierce of safety. where is biden's transportation secretary. >> where's he at? >> i don't know. your guess is as good as me. yesterday was the first time i heard anything from the white house. >> and many residents report they are still feeling very sick. >> i wake up every day. i have been sick with my upper congestion. this morning i woke up with my eyes swelled. >> my kids, we're just running in to grab something and then we are going back to grandma's house. they keep breaking out in rashes. >> i work by the rail track. i have experienced headaches and coughing. >> i try not to go outside because every time i go outside, my throat gets scratchy. >> i have a sore throat,

headaches, my husband still has a headache. >> yesterday, ohio governor mike dewine said the water is safe to drink but encouraged residents here to drink bottled water. many residents remain very scared. >> my biggest concerns is ultimately the drinking water. the effects of the drinking water. >> i feel like they haven't been truthful with us. i just worry, about especially, the kids, the young mothers, the pregnant mothers. >> biggest concern i have is with dioxins. nobody is even talking about dioxins, period. >> east palestine's mayor appears overwhelmed. >> i'm not ready for this. i wasn't built for this. i consider myself a leader of men. i have the village on my back. i will do whatever it takes to make this right. i'm done playing games. they are not playing games either. i'm not -- it it's not he said, she said.

they screwed up our town. they are going to fix it. >> president biden's e.p.a. chief is due here in east palestine around 12:30. survey the damage and speak to locals. right now he appears to be the face ever the federal response. guys? >> steve: the buck stops there. lucas, i understand. we know hundreds of people attended that town hall last night at the high school. and i think people were taken aback when though first walked in there tables were set up. people would walk over in small groups and ask the local officials different questions. the frustration as you can see with that guy right there. it's like i want some answers and then it became a great big q&a, right? >> that's right. and many people are wondering where president biden's transportation secretary pete buttigieg, as they just mentioned, steve, it's going to be e.p.a. chief visiting here today. right now we are not sure if the transportation secretary will be showing up any time soon.

>> ainsley: lucas, what's the deal with the water? should they do bottled water? he said i would do bottled water and yesterday we tested all five wells in the municipality and they are all clean? >> right. ohio governor mike dewine appearing on martha mccallum's show "the story" he said the tests are all clear but he did encourage as notable both the e.p.a. chief and the ohio governor say they are encouraging residents to continue to drink bottled right right here but the tests did come out clean about two weeks after that massive derailment, guys. >> steve: that's not good if they are saying drink bottled water. lucas, thank you very much for the live report getting up early. >> brian: the gutless norfolk southern group said we know that many are rightfully angry and frustrated unfortunately after consulting with community leaders we have become increasingly concerned about the growing physical threat to our employees and members of the community. so, they did not show up. so, basically, it was a venting session with nothing being done. congressman bill johnson, who is a republican, an air force

officer. for some reason seems kind of mellow about the whole thing. we have got see pete buttigieg, that doesn't get things done. you have got to start rattles some cages to get some attention down there. biden doesn't address issues that effect americans. looking the other way here. you cannot allow them to do it. they have to be battered in order to speak about china. and now they are ignoring this. i'm left of center, lucas, asking what going on with the whole train system. you got derailments happening at dizzying rate. does this have anything to do with the strike and the brokering of the strike that took place against these workers' will. for them not to show up last night. these guys have to lawyer up at the same time they have to live their lives. for the most part the way this city profiles, this is a working class area, who live paycheck to paycheck. they don't have money to go stay in a four seasons. >> ainsley: plus, they go there to get answers. the company doesn't show up,

norfolk southern because they are scared. they said they are worried about their safety. >> steve: right. >> ainsley: people are asking questions. they are screaming out questions, if you watch the full video when they are sitting here in the high school auditorium or gymnasium. >> steve: right. >> ainsley: bill johnson, the congressman, he said, look, the white house is not here. if you have a question. >> brian: write it down. >> ainsley: write down. here's my card. send it to me and all the questions will be answered. i will contact the white house. >> steve: right. speaking of the white house, apparently regulations regarding train safety were changed during the trump administration. this particular railroad and others lobbied president trump to dismantle an obama era rule that would have required railroads to update their braking systems. and apparently the obama administration had pushed for it to govern transportation of hazardous materials after about half a million barrels of crude were dumped but, ultimately, the trump administration undid that. and said the costs exceeded the

benefits. nobody understands and, you know, when they talk about whether or not it's safe to drink the water, the question is ground water. remember the movie the julia roberts started in erin brockovich? nobody knows about ground water and contamination better than erin brockovich. she stood up. she was a whistleblower in that landmark case on the west coast. she was on with kennedy last night telling the people of ohio, hey, if it doesn't feel right, it's not right. watch. >> they need to believe their own instincts. they need to believe what it is they are smelling, what it is they are seeing, what it is they are feeling, what it is they are experiencing. what it is with them having to bury their dead animals and concerns for their children who are having coughs and rashes and vomiting and nausea and dizziness and headaches and everything else. this is just turning into one nightmare if you ask me because testing can take time. you just don't flip from the air is bad. the air is safe.

none of this is making any sense. and you wonder why the community is angry, frustrated and fearful. because there is no consistent data. there is no confirmed data. and it's a guessing game. and that's a tragedy to do to a community. >> brian: they are handing out forms for them to sign, almost to alleviate them from any type of vulnerability. >> steve: waivers. >> brian: this is unbelievable that this is happening. >> ainsley: one resident, brian, said. this the e.p.a. is not letting us know any numbers. they are just saying that the air is clean. she said, you know, we heard this around 9/11. the water in flint, michigan, different things in the back of your head. she said they told me they were going to do an air quality test. never got a call back. three times, three different agents from that number said that they were going to come do an air quality test. >> brian: yeah. they weren't worried about security. they were worried about the optics of being yelled at by residents who know they have been lied to and possibly poisoned with toxic gases.

i guess that's a gutless thing for this railroad not to show up. >> steve: well, one of the problems comes from the federal government and that is, you know, we keep showing you that controlled burn of those railcars. and then you have got the great big black plume of smoke. they only evacuated within one mile of that. >> ainsley: they said that's what the e.p.a. suggested. >> steve: exactly, that's what the federal government said. if you are one block from that evacuation zone, you're not getting your water tested. you are not getting your soil sampled. you're not getting your air sampled as well. one of the people at the event last night, the town hall has a woman who said that she was planning to move before the derailment but now she wonders whether or not she can sell her house. and think about it. would you move to that town? that's what she is wondering. >> brian: 11 minutes after the hour. coming up, incredible stories of survival. rescuers are pulling women and children from the rubble still.

el paso police confirming two suspects in custody in connection with last night's shopping mall shooting it. left one dead and three hurt. authorities say an off-duty officer took down the suspected shooter within minutes. the chain of events leading up to the shooting remain unclear. officials say the mall remains an active crime scene. the shopping center is located next to the walmart where 23 people were killed in 20 # 19 shooting spree. 77-year-old woman is rescued 212 hours after the deadly earthquake in turkey crews pulling her from the rubble of a seven story apartment block that crumbled. three other women and two children are have also been rescued and aid is slowly making its way into syria. relief efforts have been hampered by rebels battling the assad regime. number of people dead in turkey and syria at more than 41,000. former u.n. ambassador and south carolina governor nikki haley officially launching her 2089 presidential campaign in

now. >> hi. >> steve: lisa, thank you very much for getting up and talking to us. you are four miles from the derailment. and. >> we are. >> steve: and the day that they decided we are going to light this on fire. a control burn and you had the black smoke going up and the blume and the ash coming down. describe that day and your worries since then about the stuff in the air winding up in you. >> so that day was absolutely terrifying the communications that we were receiving from our friends in emergency services versus what we were hearing threw like news alerts and through emergency alerts was quite different. and also where the roads were blocked off to get into ohio was

far further than the 1 mile radius that they talked about. so, when we saw the controlled burn, and we saw that blume, it definitely came up over us and we feel, you know, our eyes burning and, you know, we could feel like our skin, our exposed skin, you know, kind of burning. so it it was terrifying. a property there four miles from the burn you got pond, fish in it, donkey, worried about your animals. you are worried about yourself. they only evacuated, they are only testing within one mile of it. you are four miles to the east of it so they are not going to test your water. you are pretty much on your own. but you did not go last night to this town of hall because you

don't want to go into that town, right? >> that's definitely part of it. but just to explain to you what we actually have here. it's far more than just a donkey and some fish. we are a farm animal refuge and sanctuary and we have over 200 animals here. >> steve: wow. >> so when we evacuated and made the decision to evacuate it was a massive undertaking and we had over 80 large animals and we took about half of our bird population. we weren't able to get the rest out because of hpai. and limited locations to put them. yeah we have definite concerns not only for our family but for, you know, the animals that we had harbor here. and as far as going into the town, no, i really don't want to go into town. >> i don't blame you. >> i think that the town people are seeing an influx of people who just really don't belong there right now.

and, so that also needs to be respected. they are not a circus. >> steve: clearly, lisa, there has got to be a more organized cleanup because the ash came down. they say water's okay drink bottled water. the water is okay. the air is okay. they have got to vacuum stuff up. they have got to hose things down. more organized cleanup. lisa, do you trust during trust the state government and the federal government to help you guys? >> your absolutely not. what we're hearing right now is that the only people that are getting help are within that one mile radius and that if you are 1.2 miles away you are not going to get any help. so, we're definitely understanding that we have to do our own studies. we have to test our own air, our own air and our own soil and go from there. i certainly worry about the

average for the west again tale of two seasons it. feels like springtime for the eastern third and then behind it is where we have got that cold air and potential for a foot or more of snow. that front is bringing the potential for not only severe weather but tornadoes. looks like a tornado warn storm right now that red polygon southwest of nashville. that means we have spotted a tornado on doppler radar, strong rotation. a tornado watch in effect from arkansas up towards kentucky, including western tennessee. and there's that severe storm threat along the mississippi and the east of the mississippi and ohio river valley today. so we will be tracking the potential for stronger storms including tornadoes. then we have got that threat for snow, 6 to 12 inches for parts of the upper midwest and the great lakes. there are your potential record highs today. so 84 in gainesville, florida, all the way towards portland maine 52 in new york city. 63 degrees and then we'll hit some records tomorrow on friday. so that's a big deal across the east coast. and looking ahead, thursday, friday, saturday. it looks like we are going to have roller coaster ride of warm

soon. >> ainsley: doubtful. warning you are about to see is pretty graphic. this morning two members of the flagler county sheriff's office are being hailed heroes after pulling a driver from that burning car. joining us to recall the rescue corporal joseph barnette and deputy steve pierre. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> ainsley: y'all are heroes. joseph, i will start with you. tell me what happened. >> we were actually just leaving the hospital on state route 100. heading westbound. came up to the scene where where i noticed a car was kind of backed into an 18-wheeler when he got closer to it i noticed there was one person on the ground behind the car and i started seeing flames come from the engine compartment. as soon as i saw -- trying to get the fire put out or try to reduce the flame. so i grabbed my fire extinguisher and approached it and hit it with the fire

extinguisher. he. >> ainsley: steve, i understand you and some good samaritans, including the driver's brother who was, i think, driving car helped pull the driver out, tell me about that as i was following my corporal coming in the hospital, the car was just in flames. we got word that there was another person trapped in the vehicle. the driver's side door was just smacked, couldn't open it, so me and a couple of good samaritans pulled on that driver door until i got it just opened, noticed that the driver was in there and had his seat belt on, of course. i took my knife and cut the seat belted loose. and pulled him out of the vehicle and tried to get him to safety. >> ainsley: joseph, what i'm learning from just listening to your story, you had the fire extinguisher and then steve had his knife to cut the cut the seat belt and help pull open that door. you saved someone's life. we want to know how they are doing, how that makes you feel
