i'm pumped. it's finally warming up here at the track. if you're a high school band, what a better backdrop than the daytona 500 and the international speedway, the big race is tomorrow at 2:30 and we get a chance to cover it all morning long and talk news. rachel: absolutely. pete: always fun to be here. rachel: let's get to some of that news and we're going to talk about east palestine and sounding the alarm and the effects of toxic chemicals in the town. >> i've had a headache and odd tinkling sensation like in the gums and on my lips. my brother-in-law went to the hospital and got checked out. he was having some severe symptoms, some breathing issues. >> they let this sink in and burn for days before they evacuated anybody. the damage is already done and this will be something that is going to take decades to

hopefully clean up. pete: the white house will finally send government toxicologists so visit east palestine today. will: trent conaway is the mayor of east palestine and raised concerns from the very beginning and joins us now. thank you for joining us this morning. you hear that the ep a and fema is showing up and the federal government response is coming physically to ohio two weeks later. how do you feel this morning about the handling of this disaster in your town? >> well, i guess they're finally showing up and it's a little late and i'm glad they're coming and i think they should have been here long before this. pete: what's the excuse and rational with the environmental disaster occurring in your

community they'd wait two weeks. what have they told you? >> they told us it's the responsible party's job and not fema. they're a natural disaster-type agency. ores tent-like structures need help. our resto dens need help and -- residents need help and norfolk health has been paying for everything and if that stops, they'll need support and they should have been here with clinics and stuff setting up. things for our village residents. rachel: yeah. we spoke with a former epa chief of staff and said under the trump administration we'd have been there in minutes and said president trump is going to visit next week. that said, i just want to think about this and you saw the clips of your residents saying we have itchy skin and earlier clips of people saying they took showers and skin felt like it was

burning. animals in the creek are dead, looks like there's some sort of rainbow thing on the surface there. it's clear that as a mom, i wouldn't want to be there with my kids in the town. do you feel that way? do you feel like with these kinds of symptoms that your -- the residents of your town are feeling that they should be in the town? >> i would put it this way, if our residents don't feel safe then, no, they shouldn't be in the town. i personally where my family is, you know, we haven't had any of the effects that there's no smell up here but down closer to the derailment site, there's an odor down through downtown, there's actually a creek that runs down through the middle of town and under the buildings and the smell is horrendous down there. they keep saying that, everything is good and the air is good and it's testing good. i've seen the results with my

own eyes but i question some of the air results. as far as drinking water, i've drank it since day one and my family. i don't think there's an issue with water but if you have a well, i'd be drinking bottled water till all the results come in and it could be years before we know the true effects of this. pete: that's the question today and if it's quick or temporary. will: how do you talk to your constituents and you as a individual walk away with this as the confident physical health of your town and its residents. >> it's a couple states questioned, i guess. first as of right now they say everything is safe and we need

continuing testing and continuing monitoring of the situation. as far as i'm concerned, they should have to test for a memo of the next ten years and anybody that wants a test. we need to get the hhs in here and start doing studies and makd we have data driven evidence for our residents. pete: mayor trent conawaw, we're praying for your town and citizens and hope they'll turn their gaze in your directions way they deserve it. thank you for speak out a lot more than you bargained for when you ran for mayor and thank you for doing everything you can for the citizens of your town. thank you, sir. >> thank you. pete: you got it. rachel: all right. pete: what a situation you'd never imagine yourself in.

>> no, running for -- rachel: no, running for mayor of a little town and something like this happens and this has long term effects health wise and in terms of new residents and terms of property damage and the future of the town is at stake and bring in bret baier and anchor and reporter of the area. what's your thoughts on the interview with the mayor of that east palestine. >> good morning. you feel for mayor conaway and the folks in east palestine and look at what they're facing and talking about it and how they feel. it's a real, real issue. the fact that, you know, you've had officials from the epa coming and saying the water is safe, go ahead and drink it to state officials saying, well, no, you've got to drink bottled water and then you have as you were showing this video, you know, senator vance going out and putting this out there on

social media about throwing a rock in there or getting into a creek and showing the chemicals coming up. i think there's a real issue here on the federal side that if criticism and when transportation secretary buttigieg comes out and says well, you know, there's thousands of train derailments every day. that's really not the message that east palestine wants to hear so i think it's a real vulnerability for the administration and hopefully these folks get the help they need. will: bret, chinese propaganda should be repeated with the understanding that it is propaganda and a statement with the chinese chief of foreign affairs and the biden administration and current news cycle when it comes to ufos and balloons and speaking of deflecting and seeing a balloon 18,000 meters above the ground

and it has been behind to the toxic mushroom cloud of vinyl chloride over ohio. at the same time china is also talking about increasing confrontations with nato, bret. you know, i would be curious. you host special report every night and you're plugged into washington dc and know about this and every other administration's relationship with china and how today would you characterize our relationship with china? >> it's faltering. it's aggressive action by china and the balloon is the latest iteration of that and there's a lot of politicians in washington on both sides of the aisle who say this can't stand. but the message from the president said we don't want conflict and it's an interesting softer pitch we heard from vice president harris and she didn't think it was going to affect relations between the u.s. and

china. well, that raise add lot of eye eyebrows in washington and what you see in the bipartisan committees looking at how the u.s. can deal with china and deal with the aggressiveness, there's a real concern on both sides of the aisle. you know, it's pretty rich for the chinese to put out a statement like that and they try to tweak us all the time but they're clearly being more aggressive than they ever have been. pete: yeah, no doubt. by the way, raising eyebrows in washington dc for dc's speaker. what in the heck did she just say and why is she speaking for us? bret, it's true. she's at the munich security conference right now making remarks. if there are any of interest, we'll bring it to you. bret, we're switching gears and you're hoping your driver and car today will be aggressive in

the xfinity race. tell us about your car. if it's daytona, it's bret baier and share with the audience why you're involved with the sport and the causes there's behind it? >> i'm so sad i'm not with you guys. the special report car is back and it's no. 2 with david star who's driving and i think he's there with you guys. he's the best ambassador for us. we got in this a few years ago, just on a lark. a buddy of mine tom davidson and i said let's plug in and see about na nascar and had such fun doing it and met such great people and brought my kids to races and we kind of just got into it. now we have a really good team with arnold motor sports and a good car, and i think david is going to head to the winner's circle. that's what i think. will: let's find out, bret. david s starr is onset with us here in daytona, florida.

dad was a driver and y'all got to experience it and we have a racing school at texas motor speedway and you were driving with mike starr started it, my uncle, it's awesome the best part is the fans and the fans come like you did, will, yesterday and getting a real race car and racing around the daytona national speedway and it's incredible and i love it with the smiles on everybody's faces and the tiers make ago case like i lived out a childhood and can't believe i drove for nascar and special and unbelievable. will: man, once you've done that and can imagine you step up on any t box and drive no matter how big the crowd and panic and mind control. pete: bret baier could do that and i know that you and i can do that and tee off in the area and

we need to make that happen. >> yes, 100% and i'd like to do that. david, one of the things he told me was different; right? >> it was different. last time we were here -- it's unbelievable. it's so different and when you win at daytona and you want to win daytona and it's special and last time we were here, we hung out and middle pack and middle range and give ourselves a right to win and about 7 or 8 charged to the front and drove up to third or fourth place and on turn four and it was pretty intense and somebody hit the wall and somebody ran into somebody else and i brought the special report car coming down by the grass and just barely clipped me and next thing you know, we gave ourself a chance and we have to be there at the

♪ pete: look at this fancy graphic that makes us look cool. we appreciate it. nascar gearing up for its 75th anniversary season. of course all eyes on denyny hamlin, who's -- denny hamlin who's won the daytona 500 three times including back-to-back years. rachel: who does he see as his biggest competition this year? we're going to ask him. will: that'll be an interesting question. i'll let you ask denny who he sees as his biggest competition hold that till later on air. denny r did you grow up and got into, where did you grow up and get into racing? you went to a race when you were 5 and look at you. >> i did. i was 5 years old and went to a race at richmond, virginia, and i just -- the minute the cars came around and i smelled the tires and fuel, it was over for me. as a kid, all i wanted to do was be out there competing at 200 miles an hour. pete: you're not just competing at 200 miles an hour, you're winning at 200 miles an hour.

we watch a lot of na nascar in r house. you're always at the front. what is it about, you know, your equipment, your capabilities that has you leading the pack most often? >> well, i mean, we always like to give credit to our team, which i should and fedex took me on eight years ago and didn't think we'd have the opportunity to win 48 races and i love working on my craft and i love to -- the grind of it, figuring out how to get better and find the gray areas in which i can find speed and that process is what i really love about it. rachel: the future of nascar are the little 5-year-old kids, 6-year-old, 8-year-old kids that come to events like this. see it and go this is what i want to be. i see pete's kids who love nascar, and i think one of them will end up being a driver. pete: we'll see. rachel: you're 5 years old and say i love this sport. what's the first step that

someone takes to become that champion that you are? >> well, we went -- we opened up at the time was a trading post in richmond, virginia, and found a go kart that was "race ready" for $200 and my dad bought it and tinkered it and took me to a dirt track and said this is how you steer, go and stop. go out there. pete: sounds like a dad. >> just watched me make laps and get the go kart sideways and correct it and was like, okay, his car control is good and i'll guerrero forget a few weeks later he took me to a race and i won my first race and give a 5-year-old a trophy and he'll want to get more and that's what i did. will: i love that question by the way because it's intuitive how you playe that 500 -- dayto. you're a three-time champion

here and take the track tomorrow and looking to make it four, who are you looking out the window and h hopefully rear-view mirro, who is are looking out for tomorrow? >> probably joey logano and he's the biggest threat for us not to win for and he'll be so certain and have to have -- circumstantial and you'll have to have three faucets to win the race with luck, skill set and execution and not making any mistakes and it's really hard to get all three to line up on one day and if you can, you'll be champion here on sunday. pete: unique thing is you're not only a driver but you own a team with michael jordan. rachel: i didn't know that. pete: the greatest basketball player of all time and coolest dude ever and bubba wallace drivers for jordan and he's come in second a few times. >> i have three extra bullets in the gun and if i don't win, i have three other chances to win. rachel: that's a great way to look at it. >> i like to win for myself and

my fedex team. i look at the goals that i have; right, and the closest to my goals and the ones closest to me are the ones i can accomplish and before my career is over i have a certain amount of wins to get to and races to win and i can't control that. rachel: what does it mean to your family by the way? >> it's so much. my parents made so many sacrifices for me to get it in reses and that's the different thing about racing; right, it does take money and funding to do it. my parents had to second mortgage their house and sold all their old cars to keep my racing career going and luckily it paid off and got more cars from that. rachel: that was a great investment. >> really good investment. will: best of luck, denny. we appreciate it. rachel: thank you. pete: you need to sign a few autographs for me before you leave. my kids need it. >> i can do that. pete: rachel puts flying skills to the test in a ride along with the air force thunder birds. can't wait to see that.

rachel: this was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. you were so good and knew exactly how to guide me and i almost threw up multiple times but i didn't use the bag. what an amazing experience. i have to tell you, i felt -- what i felt was god up there. it was pretty incredible and it was really nice to be up -- how high are we up? >> about 10,000. rachel: we did it. thank you.

one, i love the flight suit. fashion wise, it was very cool. i was really into it. the pride that the entire team takes in the airplane and what they do on the professionalism, i was blown away by it. made me love the military and the air force even more. everyone looked like they walked out of central casting, they were gorgeous, they were fit, at one point i thought, i'll take the volleyball scene and not the flight at this point in top gun, everyone looked so good, but we did the flight and here with us is travis grandstaff, the captain of the u.s. thunder birds and the flight surgeon and checked me out before i did this. >> absolutely. i'm happy to be here and you did great and look incredible. you're in better shape than we are. rachel: i was a little nauseous yesterday still but i feel perfect today. >> yeah, you look absolutely great. i mean, you crushed your flight. just to put into perspective i
