he needs to tell him how this will work and end and part is defeating strategic adversary and that is good for america. taking strategic adversary, russians, allow us to pivot to the chinese, our growing adversary and where we need to look. >> steve: that is what the white house is concerned about, that growing alliance between china and russia. general, if our president picked up the phone, that would be fantastic, what he is going to do today with bucharest nine, talk about more sanctions. a year ago we thought sanctions were going to bring russia to his knees, he is selling as much oil and gas as he was before. >> look, people think sanctions are going to work in the short term and they never do. here is what happened, in 2014, putin took crimea, we put sanctions on him. he's learned a lesson and built up a huge reserve, billions and
5:51 am
billions of dollars, he knew sanctions would come back. sanctions are not hurting him. they are making a lot of money with gas and oil right now and turn to the chinese. we can do sanctions, we need to take forceful action, we the united states, and help the ukrainians win this fight. they can win it, they are in good posture right now and it will change the face of europe for the next generation. if that happens, then we can back away from nato meaning amount of money we're spending and put that money back in the united states, where it should go, or into the pacific, where it also should go. there is great both sea and air war looming, it is not a ground war, we're not marching to beijing, huge fight on the seas and in the air. we need to do that, he talks a great game, he hasn't played a good game. >> ainsley: what are your
5:52 am
predictions for ukraine, general? do you think the ukrainians will fight back enough where russia will withdraw? what happens? what does the future look like? >> great question and has to be defined end state, president biden has not gone in front of the american people and given them an end state. that is when you tell putin, we will provide ukraine all the armorment it needs, missiles or ground support, everything it takes to push the russian army out of ukraine in total. we give option to putin, say it clearly, either withdraw the army voluntarily or we'll help ukrainians push you out. it is up to you. ukrainians are fighting well, they have been able to contain this fight, regained about 40% of land lost in the initial invasion. americans need to understand, we have not committed american troops on the ground.
5:53 am
i took a trip to ukraine a couple weeks ago, there was not a single ukrainians, military or civilian side, want americans there. they said, give us a kit and we'll fight, this is a fight to the finish, they do not want to negotiate at all. >> brian: it is clear, russians are creating a coup in the country, russia can't handle ukraine, little chance them trying to take back other eastern european nations, he is right or wrong? >> i question that statement, because if we let them move forward, he'll continue to fight. russians have mass, thatten moos people and equipment and they can generate that. we need to stop them there. the russian bear is still a dangerous bear, we need to understand that, it is backed by nuclear weapons, backed by, we
5:54 am
can't let them off the line, we have to keep pushing them back. when you say that, that is dangerous way of looking at it, never discount russian ability to fight, they proved that in world war quite well. >> steve: latest public opinion polls in united states, majority of -- only 26% say the united states should have a major role, right now we have a major role. what do you say to the 74% that say something else? >> well, i wouldn't direct it to 74%, i direct to the president of the united states, i have done a lousy job presenting this to the american people and told them why ukraine is in the best interest of america. if you defeat a strategic adversary, russia, thattic tas them out of the way, like in world war ii, between germany and japan, we went after
5:55 am
germany, took them off the table and focused everything back on japan, that is what we need to do. you never want to fight two enemies at the same time, this is wonderful opportunity to change the face of europe, degrade russia capability, take that adversary off the table. especially when we're not committing american troops, circling back to what you just said, this is up to president biden, he's not gone in front of the american people, he needs to do it and provide equipment to ukraine. he's playing good game in the mouth, not in force. >> steve: okay. thank you very much. >> ainsley: national security adviceor to vice president pence, thank you, gentlemen of the jury, too. >> brian: back in a moment, more "fox and friends," we'll monitor everything. a medicine specifically made for heart failure. entresto is the #1 heart
