with president biden and putin today bolstering their respective alliances with nato and china. their pitches come just days before the first anniversary of moscow's invasion of ukraine. global tensions between the superpowers highlighted on a day of diplomacy in both warsaw and moscow. >> acidity many times, i'll say it again it's absolutely clear. article five is a secret commitment the united states has made. we will defend every inch of nato. >> meantime, as trace pointed out, with respect to joe biden's 2024 presidential campaign prospects, typically the question has been, should he or shouldn't he run again? however, now, increasingly democrats are wrestling with a very different and indeed pressing question. it will he or won't he? tonight, politico reporting that democrats are quietly preparing for the possibility that the

80-year-old simply won't be up for the task. and the longer he waits to officially declare his intentions -- you guessed it, a growing number of would-be candidates are circling the water like sharks, waiting to feast upon the chance, including notables like harris, newsom, sanders, club chard , pritzker, murphy, and the lik. also tonight, officials are signaling that we are likely to see even more rate hikes amid sticky inflation in the coming days and months ahead. although it may become the norm for the foreseeable future rather than have pointer 50 basis point raratehikes. >> trace: kevin, thank you. back to you a bit later on. >> i'm going to be completely fairly honest with the american people, if i thought there was a health problem or anything that would keep me from being able to do the job. people will have to just watch me. >> it sounds like you're run running. >> i haven't made that decision.

got here. how many times in the last year or six months or so have we heard talk president biden going to deliver or to camp david to meet with his family to supposedly make this decision on whether he should run again? he just never come back from one of the strip saying he's running or not running that hint that he's not confident, maybe his family is incompetent. we see now in this political report, this might happen. >> trace: the thing is, he always noticed someone might be tipping the media. politico had this thing that reads in part, quoting here, "biden may not run, and top dems are quietly preparing," while the belief is that he will ultimately give the all clear. his indecision has resulted in an awkward deep-freeze across the party, and that deep-freeze includes the donors. as we put the picture on, other political candidates who might want to run. >> i don't think it's all that surprising that there are these conversations happening in the biden world, and that dems would be lining up if these conversations are happening. i think ultimately what's

happening here is democrats have a tough path into a 24. in the approval ratings, they have hovered at high 30s, low 40s. that's a disaster for electoral success, obviously paid to look at the economic picture, 6-9% inflation we've been dealing with, border crossing skyrocketing, crimes skyrocketing. internationally, russia invaded ukraine, there is the china spy balloon that flew over the entirety of the united states, so they've got real problems going to 2024 whether it's joe biden or another democrat. see when you bring up the numbers, i want to put these up. i keep going back to these numbers. this was probably a little over three weeks ago but it is still relevant. this is the ap saying, who should live the democratic party? your memory, these are democrats they asked, soully. they said the president, 12%. no answer, 31%. that is really bad news if you are a joe biden fan. >> absolutely. there are so many reasons for democrats in the next two years he has left before he's up for election again that it could get so much worse.

as garrett was just mentioning, the border won't get any better once title 42 goes away. the one thing he's been bragging about his unemployment and that's probably going to spike, according to most of the experts looking at what happens with inflation and interest rate hikes. that's going to get worse. you have china and russia and iran creating this new axis of evil, nothing at home or abroad is getting any better, there's going to be a lot of people looking for anyone but biden to vote for. steel on the last question will be on this topic. then you've got kamala harris. if joe biden is unpopular in the democratic party, kamala harris is really unpopular in the democratic party. >> which is a hard feat. i think the person licking their chops most is president trump. there was a poll that showed him not only beating g.o.p. primary folks. it matches strongly within abc poll we saw earlier of him beating joe biden by three points, as well. i think you'll see a lot of chattering from democrats.

kamala harris, bernie sanders. pete buttigieg is another candidate. he can't handle any of the crisis in the supply chain where the train crash in ohio. to the got big problems with her it's better not. >> pete buttigieg's candidacy is just doing this. i would like you to expand on that, if you lead, this axis. this appears to be getting more dangerous, especially if china really does gives lethal weapons to russia. >> as president biden was making his way back from poland, china's top diplomat was meeting with leaders in russia. so you have that going on, and the deal that has been inked between the iranians and the russians to make more kamikaze drones. the arms that ukraine is using to fight russia, at the same time, biden is trying to do this iran deal, so it's not working. >> trace: ten seconds, garrett. >> spencer is right. this goes into larger problems under biden whether it's domestically or foreign, the world is getting weaker under his reign. >> trace: this whole thing

starts to get really close and really scary. spencer and garrett come i think you both are coming on. we appreciate it. meantime, finally, transportation secretary pete buttigieg is said to visit east palestine, ohio, tomorrow, the former president trump got the jump for visiting the area today getting a firsthand look at the damage left behind from that train derailment early this month. jeff paul is live with the latest on this. good evening. >> good evening, trace. president biden is now stateside after spending three days in both poland and ukraine. while he doesn't have any specific plans to head to east palestine, ohio, his transportation secretary, pete buttigieg, will be there tomorrow. but today the attention all surrounded former president donald trump. his visit comes two weeks after a norfolk southern train derailed as it was carrying toxic chemicals. trump criticized the response from the current administration saying residents have been betrayed by the federal government. he surveyed the damage, met with

local leaders, and donated some cleaning supplies along with pallets of trump-branded bottled water. he even went to a local mcdonald's to hand out his signature hats, sign autographs, and mingle with customers and employees. >> actions speak louder than words at this point. trump is coming out. where is biden? he's not here. speak a kind of sucks that he came before the actual president did. it would be nice if somehow we got support from that end, too. >> in an instagram post, president biden said he was in contact with the epa and lawmakers in the area, committing to make sure folks have everything they need. president biden also pressed on the train company responsible for the disaster. it would be norfolk southern, saying that it is there a mess and they should clean it u up. they admit they are getting a lot of help, but what is in short supply right now our answers, especially in regards to their health and rebuilding efforts. trace? >> trace: they are in very short supply, jeff paul.

thank you. let's talk about east palestine and other big challenges facing the biden administration. former undersecretary of the army, patrick murphy. great to have you on. the epa administrator says there's a trust problem in east palestine. here's what he said, and i'll get your response. >> our sole goal is to win back and earn the trust of the community. we recognize that there is a trust deficit. i have sat down and done a community roundtable, i have visited homes on the ground in east palestine. i know that a trust deficit exists. >> trace: but when you have the parent that mike transportation secretary yesterday saying he will visit when the time is right, and the time is right, it tends to infer that there is no plan. speak out that point, there is a trust deficit that gallup polls have shown for years. our enemies overseas love it. they want to divide us from

within. i look at this and say, let's get boost on the ground. i'm glad president trump went and let the people know he cares about them. the lift unifies a country. it has been, frankly, profits over the people. norfolk southern, with a stock buyback program, and that train derailment was a 3--mile freight train, about double what should be on average. so i think people are losing focus about who the culprit is here. again, my heart goes out to the people of east palestine. we need to make sure we do all we can to support them. >> trace: here's what surprises me. you have the mayor of east palestine now who said this today, which i thought was a little surprising. watch. >> we are a small community. we don't want the media attention. we want our community to go back to the way it was. that's our end goal.

[laughs] >> trace: i get it, they want their lives back to normal, but when the media leaves, everybody forgets about what's happening in east palestine. you need to media to stay because the media is putting feet to the fire, and that's important. >> the media will put pressure on and make sure government is doing their job. that's why i think it is so important that we shine a light. this is an ecological disaster. you're talking about thousands of fish, a thousand residents forced to evacuate. we need to do all he can. and my home state of pennsylvania, as well. we need to do what he can for these people. the speed when i talked gentleman about that, the whole axis now. china, russia, iran. all of a sudden they seem to be very cozy and it's concerning a lot of people. >> i call it the cringe.

they are our competitors. they try to stand toe-to-toe with us militarily, economically. we need to rally as americans and understand we are in a competition against competitors out there who want to do us harm. it's not just about a spy balloon, which was egregious, but it's about our phones and tiktok and corporate espionage, trying to take down our economy. we need to wake up as americans and rally together and stop the b.s. partisan stuff we are seeing out there. >> trace: great to have you on. thank you. meantime, 70 million americans across the country are now in the impact zone of severe weather. the winter weather, the massive storm system is not only fast, it's powerful, and it's also unusual, unleashing heavy snow, significant ice, and subfreezing temperatures in numerous states. marianne rafferty is tracking the warnings, the watches, and what you need to look out for. marianne, it could be a very rough few days. >> it's definitely looking at

way, trace. winter is far from over with snow and frigid conditions shutting down communities across the country. at least 25 states are under some sort of winter weather alert. seven are under blizzard warnings. that includes the los angeles area for the first time since 1989. the midwest, especially minnesota, is expected to get the worst of it, though. minneapolis declared a snow emergency ahead of the storm as they brace for up to two feet of snow. people are told to expect ice, of course snow, extreme cold, rain, and sleet. as you can imagine, this is already impacting travel in a big way. more than 1700 flights have been canceled and over 6,000 flights have been delayed, with more expected as the system advances across the country. four major airlines have issued waivers for people his travel plans are disrupted, and we are told large portions of interstate 94, which cuts across the midwest into wisconsin, is closed due to crashes and poor visibility. meanwhile, freezing rain and

sleet is ongoing from iowa to michigan and into the northeast. according to fox weather, the storm will continue through thursday and hopefully wind down early friday, just in time for a weekend of shoveling. hopefully not here in l.a. >> trace: good for skiing, that for living. marianne rafferty lives for us in l.a. first up into nights crime round up, in pine hills florida, that's just outside orlando, and man shot and killed a 9-year-old girl, woman in her 20s, and a tv journalist. he also shot another journalist and a second woman. both are in critical condition. the tv reporter and photographer were at the scene where the first woman was shot when the 19-year-old suspect came back, open fire again. the alleged shooter, with a lengthy rap sheet, was arrested, and there appears to be zero connection between the shooter and most of the victims. in new york, police are looking for thieves whose ammo is to write up on their moped behind unsuspecting victims and then steal expensive apple airpods

right off their heads. both the driver and passenger wore all black and have reportedly done this 21 times in just the past month. and still more thieves. this time smashing into a woman's car while she was grabbing lunch with friends at a restaurant in oakland, california. the criminals made off with her backpack, which carried an urn with the ashes of her brother who died four years ago. she made this plea. >> i want my earn back. it means nothing to but has a lot of value to me. i carry it everywhere i go. it's like he passed away all over again. forget the backpack in the wallet. i don't care about any of those material things. i just want my brother's urn back. >> trace: and letting county virginia police are looking for these car thieves who went around town looking for unlocked vehicles. they stole money, electronics, tools, and even a rifle. and disturbing pictures out of san jose, california. a customer kicked a street vendor in the head after concert. two days later, another suspect

attacked a separate vendor with a baseball bat. that suspect was arrested and charged with assault and carjacking, but police are still looking for the man who kicked the first vendor. now, to the alex murdaugh trial where his former law partner took the stand. and he might even testify in his own defense. >> one of the issues that has come back is the scope of cross-examination. >> the alex murdaugh defense team is hinting they are considering having the client take the stand, but they don't want the prosecution to question him about his alleged financial crimes. the judge seemed to side with the prosecution. >> for the court to issue some blanket order, limiting the scope of cross-examination, that is unheard of to me. >> if murdaugh testifies, it will be a gamble for the defense. murdaugh is accused of swindling millions from clients.

the claims it is motive for murdering his wife, maggie, and son, paul. he claims he is innocent. today he wept as a graphic video of the murder scene was shown to jurors. and defense lawyers are grilling a crime scene examiner. >> did they do a terrible job here? >> they are trying to prove the murder site was contaminated, with multiple investigators walking on the grounds, and claiming photographs and footprint impressions were taken and properly. >> it let me give it more scientific. an adequate job to show the absence of come at the minimum , the absence of any other evidence. they do an adequate job connect >> i don't believe so. >> the judge ruled today he will not decide in advance whether to limit the scope of questions about finances, should murdaugh testify. it's possible that murdaugh could take the sand later this week. trace? >> trace: thank you. south carolina republican senator tim scott spoke in iowa today, outlining his vision for the country as he mulls a

"a nonapology." ♪ ♪ don lemon was that cohosting cnn this morning after issuing an apology for last week's sexist comments about nikki haley. has he really changed his views after one day of sensitivity training? let's talk about it with former levi's brand president, jennifer sey. it's always great to have you on. it's interesting, because i want to put this up on the screen. this is what was in the email about don lemon. he says, "it's important to me that cnn bounces a countability with fostering a culture in which people can own, learn, and grow from their mistakes." don lemon has this tweet. "i appreciate the opportunity to be back at the end and this morning, to my networks, my colleagues, and bankable audience, i'm sorry. i've heard you. i'm learning for you and i'm committed to doing better. see you soon." it's as if he wrote both email and the tweet apology.

this is not accountability. >> i think it's important to note, this is the third that we know about a just a couple of weeks. he humiliated one his female coanchor's on the air and berated her for how she interviewed a congressman. he disapproved, and he decided to stop the music and mansplain to her everything that was wrong with what she had done. in just a few days later, describing nikki haley, he said that women are past their prime after their 20s and 30s, because google said so. that the journalistic standard now, which is the most absurd part. it just seems to speak to the hollowness of the democratic party platform. they talk about equality and inclusion in women's equality in particular, and yet, here we are. he was criticizing republicans and somehow it's okay.

>> trace: i know that you had said, when you are at your former company, levi's, you were told not to criticize cnn. because of light, advertising? what was the purpose of that? >> the rationale was, if we are trying to pitch new stories to cnn, which we didn't do. it was a rationale that they didn't want me criticizing cnn because it is part and parcel of the democratic party platform. >> trace: i know that you lost your job in part because you are against mask mandates for kids, and now you look at this review, you are vindicated. how do you feel being vindicated and how do you feel in the media is trying to rip out the cochrane review and tear it d down? >> bret stephens just wrote an op-ed in "the new york times" about it, and he said we may not get an apology, those of us who question, but we can at least feel vindicated.

>> tonight we bring you the story of a hero sheriff's to petey who literally pulled a troubled young man off the ledge of a highway overpass in richland county south carolina. the video of the life-saving work of corporal kenny fitzsimmons has gone viral and we look at him to the show. it's great to have you on. we look at this video and i'm just kind of astonished, because i know, as you're walking up to this young man, he is on the edge of this bridge. it's a life or death situation. you only have seconds. are you worried, sir, about saying the wrong thing? was going through your mind at that time? >> at that point, when i first walked up on him, my first idea was to try to open up a line of communication and see if he would talk to me and try to help him out that way. when i first went up to the side and he turned and lookedded at me, i could see the pain in his face. he was crying and he didn't want to talk. by the time i walked back behind

would have followed through with it, it would be a permanent solution to a temporary problem. as soon as i said that, he looked up and we made eye contact and we connected right there. and i could see, everything was sinking and that i was talking to him about. anna knew he was listening. he didn't have to talk to communicate with me. >> trace: it's amazing, because i know you have military experience and i know you know what ptsd looks like. this young man was clearly in distress, was he not? >> he was. he was going through some rough times, and like i told him out there, we all have our demons, and he almost let his demons get the worst of him that day. but now he has been pushed to the brink, he knows how to better understand what it feels like, and he will better be able to battle those demons and stop it from getting that far. >> trace: and now you've become somewhat friends. you know the family. the father came and helped, and he was grateful to you.

you might even go thanksgiving this year. how does that feel, deputy? >> it feels amazing. i've talked to him probably at least every other day at a minimum. we have an open text thread between myself, and him and his dad. we all have communication. they have expressed numerous times that they want me to come over for thanksgiving. >> trace: that's fantastic. you are kenny fitzsimmons. he is daniel kenney, which is interesting. but my thing is, corporal, we don't see this. people police semi, police officers, sheriffs deputies, are doing these kinds of good deedsl the time across the country. it's almost like it's a rule that nobody covers it. what do you think about that? >> you're right. this is probably the third or fourth person i probably pulled off a bridge. i know a lot of my deputy coworkers had done the same exact thing. sometimes it goes well like it

humanity. he has done so much for human causes since you left the presidency. >> he had kind of an uneven performance as president. he did some very good things, but he had a really good second act for many years with his work with charitable organizations and with habitat for humanity. he really set the standard for ex-presidents to go on with their lives and do good things and do important things. i can think of only one president who rivals him and his ex presidency, and that's herbert hoover. he did so much for food in europe and around the world during and after world war ii, and of course he was head of the hoover commission during the eisenhower administration. see when you think former president carter gets enough credit for some of the things he did in the office? foreign policy decisions, the panama canal, the camp david

accords, et cetera? >> when you lose as he lost badly to ronald reagan, you tend to get the bum's end of history. it takes a lot of time for the ground to cool and people reevaluate. harry truman left office with a 22% approval rating, and yet he is considered now, not in the great category, but the near-great category. i think history will be very kind to jimmy carter. one thing i should mention, one thing that is unsung is that he introduced human rights as an element on the national debate. it had never been discussed before. it has always been about landmasses and national borders. but he introduced human rights and he embarrassed the soviets because they had people of course in prison, psychiatric hospitals, gulags. he successfully got many people out of the soviet union. so that is one unsung thing. and the other thing is the
