[cheers and applause] ♪ ♪ >> trace: thank you, jimmy. good evening, everyone, and welcome to america's late news, "fox news @ night." i'm trace gallagher in washington. baking tonight, a courtroom battle for the ages. a tough prosecutor going head-to-head with a skilled defendant. murder suspect alec murdaugh on stand for a second day admitting that he's a liar. a crook, and a drug addict, but denying that he's a killer. jeff paul's life tonight with the murder trial that is riveting the country. good evening. >> trace, this trial is entering its fifth week, topped off by arguably some of the most compelling testimony for the

second day in a row. the man accused of murdering his wife and one of his sons took to the stand, saying it wasn't him, but people who hated his son, paul. disgraced attorney alex murdaugh spent six hours on the stand friday, admitting he lied, had a drug problem, but believes the deaths of his wife, maggie, and son, paul, stemmed from someone who had it out for paul. >> the person, or people, who did what i saw on june the 7th, they hated paul murdaugh and they had anger in their heart. >> paul is facing charges in the february 2019 boating wreck that killed 19-year-old malory beach. murdaugh clarifying he didn't think anyone on the boat that night was responsible, but someone who had heard about it. >> because i did not and would not hurt my wife and my child. >> but prosecutors pressed murdaugh about trying to manufacture an alibi, which he

denies. they then reminded him there is evidence he lied to police about where he was on the night of the murders. >> other than lying to them about going to the kennel, i was cooperative in every aspect of this investigation. >> very cooperative except for maybe the most important fact of all, that you were at the murder scene with the victims just minutes before they died. >> murdaugh blame his opioid addiction, saying the drugs lead to paranoid thoughts, which then caused him to lie to investigators that he wasn't at the site of the murders. witnesses have testified the voices of alex murdaugh along with his wife and son are all heard on this video at one of their kennels, time stamped just prior to their deaths. >> he's got a bird in his mouth! >> i knew she had gone to the kennel. i was at the house. i don't believe that was lying

at that point. >> okay. tell me why not. >> because maggie had gone to the kennels, and i was at the house. >> we will likely hear from a few more witnesses early next week. then there will be closing arguments. after that, the case will be in the hands of the jury who has a lot of testimony to unpack. trace? >> maybe next week this time. jeff paul live for us in l.a. thank you for more on the cross-examination of alex murdaugh. let's bring in the legal panel, robert patillo and "washington times" legal affairs reported an attorney, alex swoyer. it's kind of riveting when you listen to this whole thing. when you're up there on the stands, he is saying, as we said in the beginning, "okay, i'm a liar, okay, i cheated my friends, okay, i'm a drug addict, but i'm not a killer." tough for the jury to believe that, maybe? >> he has presently done a good job with the time he sat on the stand. the prosecutor has given in that time. you are taught even in law

school, like the first year, you ask yes or no questions, you don't ask questions that you don't already know the answer to you, and at one point the prosecutor, they start to talk at the same time and the prosecutor said "go ahead." you don't want the defendant to have that time to tell a story, especially when he's a trained trial attorney, he has coached witnesses, and he's a pretty skilled con men, given all the financial crimes he's committed. >> trace: and i do think this whole kennel thing is a key thing. i want to play then sound bite one more time, because it is pivotal when it goes to the jury. they are going to say, we want to hear the kennel thing one more time. here it is. >> i knew she had gone to the kennel. i was at the house. >> you didn't make a conscious decision to lie? >> i don't believe that was lying at that point. >> trace: and that's the whole thing, where he was at the kennel now before they were murdered, minutes before they were murdered, and suddenly he says he went back to the house and didn't hear any gunshots, and then he circles back to the kennel. and son of a gun, there was a crime. >> the state has a great

circumstantial evidence case. they have them on record lying, obfuscating. he has admitted to being a drug addict, to being a thief, a crook, a con man, anything down the line. but had the prosecution proven he killed these individuals, and the defense strategy was simple he to poke holes in it. ask the jury, have they proven to you that the defendant in this case was the person who committed these murders? i'm not sure the prosecution has squared that circle, and it's also a sloppy cross-examination. the prosecutor was looking for a kill shot, that aha, perry mason, matlock moment, and they couldn't get it because they were up against a skilled trial attorney. >> trace: i was wondering, as the jury is watching this, don't they want somebody as a plausible suspect in this case? >> to blame, right. >> trace: they say it might've been, my kit was involved in a boat accident, it might have been someone so angry about that. the jury wants somebody to blame

and not so far. >> he tried to give them someone. had to go back with what happened with paul and the boat accident, somebody had to hate him that much to do it. the one thing i thought was really interesting when the prosecutor was trying to connect the dots, you are at the kennel and back at the house and you come back, they were talking about his steps in his phone, and he said, my phone doesn't come with me in my car. i don't know if they're accurate. i don't know where i put my phone when they come in the house. i thought to myself, i can relate to that. i don't always know where i put my phone. that's what you want to do with a jury. you want one juror to say that could be true. i don't know where i put my phone all the time. >> trace: it's interesting. i just want to get you on this quickly, to change subjects. this is the lsu student, this videotape that came forward today that apparently was given to an affiliate down there in louisiana. and it shows the following. put this on the screen. the video, he seen in the backseat flanked on either side by the two man accused of raping her, saying, "i'm sorry i

offended you that bad. get out, i'll call a new bear on my own." then they are seen exiting the car, and brooks follows and is heard calling the driver gay. the families i rate the video was released, because this is one of those things where the defense, somebody is leaking this and they're trying to say, "see? this was willing. she went into this car willing." >> they have the right to make the case against the defense. the defense has the feeling that their clients have been portrayed in the media certain way and they are trying to counter that narrative with the evidence they have. so if it's uncomfortable for the family, the criminal prosecution is uncomfortable, i think each of these are building blocks in the case to determine guilt or innocence. >> trace: it's fascinating. alex, robert, thank you both. meantime, tonight, the story of an ordinary texas resident who witnessed a deadly crime against an off-duty police officer and took matters into his own hands. jackie ibanez live with the amazing details on this.

jackie, good evening. >> good evening, trace. it's really incredible. video released by texas police capturing the moment a good samaritan chased down a drunk driver attempting to flee the scene of a crash that killed an off-duty police officer. the suspect, 26-year-old dylan molina, ecm running. he plowed his jeep into a white sedan and then he made a run for it. molina didn't get far before that good samaritan right there stepped in until police arrived. >> you killed somebody, you mother [bleep]! you [bleep] killed somebody, you [bleep]! you killed somebody! stay right there! you stay right there, [bleep]! >> that white sedan was driven by police detective alec cervantes. he was pronounced dead at the scene while his wife and two blade survived the crash. according to an arrest affidavit, the suspect was served 16 shots at a local bar. his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.

molina had a previous dwi arrest back in 2021. he was not charged in that case until after this crash here that killed cervantes. last month he took a plea deal and pleaded guilty to intoxication and manslaughter. molina was sentenced to 15 years in prison. now that bartender who served those eight double red bull cocktails is also facing a misdemeanor charge for allegedly overselling molina before the crash. trace? >> trace: jackie ibanez live in new york. thank you. on the one-year anniversary of russia's invasion of ukraine, president biden met virtually with the g7 leaders and ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy. they have a new package of sanctions on the putin regime. white house correspondent kevin corke is live with the details. >> good evening, trace. as always, this is something we follow very carefully and we think most americans have a vested interest in this. critics say here we go again. billions more of your money being shoveled off to assist in

a war effort a very long distance from america. and they argue this is all happening when they should be taking better care of the american people. but the white house certainly counter that, listen, at the end of the day, this girds against autocratic tyrants like vladimir putin doing this all over the place. and the investment, therefore, is sound and immeasurably important, something that all americans should support. to that end, the president today, as trace pointed out, made a major pledge. another $2 billion in u.s. assistance to ukraine, or roughly $2 billion more than the government has set aside so far for palestine, ohio. that's what critics are saying. and they also argue that this is a president who is determined to support zelenskyy a matter what the cost. at least for now. to further complicate matters, for moscow, these sanctions are being put in place even as china tries to sort of enter the mix as a benefactor for the kremlin.

in case you're wondering, the new sanction sort of line up this way. it'll increase tariffs, for example, on russian imports. it will target companies including some in china that have actually helped russia evade sanctions. it will also target experts to russia, blocking companies from buying items like semiconductors, and those made with u.s. technology. in case you're wondering, yep, our secretary of state is weighing in. antony blinken says president putin started this illegal war, he has the power to end it. the u.s. stand strongly ukraine as a defense itself, and we will continue to do so until ukraine's sovereignty is respected, and the people ukraine can shape their chosen democratic future in freedom and peace." there you have it. still, as we mark the somber anniversary, do you keep this in mind. despite all u.s. efforts, and those of our allies, there is still no sign of an end game in this war, that is concerning for many. >> trace: if you're keeping

track, it's $113 billion, and the u.k.'s the next in line at $5 billion. haven't him agreed to see you. >> you, too, my friend. ♪ ♪ >> trace: let's talk about where things stand ukraine exactly one year after the russian invasion, and the mixed signals being sent by china on the war. with retired army general and fox news contributor, keith kellogg. general, always great to have you on. it's interesting because president biden was talking to abc news tonight and he said that he does not see a major initiative by china to give russia weapons. and then he said this. listen. >> but if they did, would that be crossing a line for you, mr. president? >> it would be the same line everyone else went across. in other words, we not impose severe sanctions on anyone who's done that. >> so there would be severe consequences? >> i would let you characterize what they would be.

we'd respond. >> t>> it seems like they can to back away from this issue of china giving weapons to russia. >> yeah, trace. first of all, thanks for having me. it's pattern he has set. pushing everything to the right time and never really giving answer, qualifying and answer. he needs to recognize and tell the american people that we regard china has an adversary. they are not a competitor. france is a competitor. china is not. this alliance between the russians and the chinese is very, very dangerous. >> and it's interesting because he was asked the next question, they talked about, what about the chinese drones, the lethal drones going to russia? he said just minutes before that, i don't think there's a big initiative on china's part to give weapons. then he was asked about the lethal drones and he gave a nonanswer. watch. >> u.s. intelligence is aware of everything that's going on in this area, but i'm not going to confirm specifically what u.s.

intelligence has found out and i found out. >> trace: so clearly he knows, but as a nonanswer, and no comment from the president. >> sometimes i get perplexed when i see the president making comments like that, because he kind of admitted he knows. of course the chinese are going to supply the russians what they need if they ask for it, because they are partners. they are not playing middle ground. they are an adversary for us and they are in alliance with ru russia. >> trace: do you worry about china giving these lethal weapons to russia? is that a concern? is that an escalation in your viewpoint? >> it's an escalation, but reinforcing what i said previously, they are an adversary. but i don't think it's going to make a mark of difference on the battlefield. i think right now the russians are on their heels, and because the equipment the united states as given, the preponderance of weapons, and the support that nato and other allies have given, i think the ukrainians are doing quite well against russians and it's going to come to a culminating point in the spring in the summer. it should. if it doesn't come to a culminating point, we don't give

the stuff they've asked for, i think what we are looking for is an endless war, and it's the worst thing that can happen. >> trace: one of the things they've asked for, f-16s, fighter jets. the president was asked about that tonight. here's what he said. >> you don't think he needs f-16s now? >> no, he doesn't need f-16s now. >> is that he never? >> [hesitates] look -- first of all, the idea that we know exactly what's going to be needed a year, two, three -- there is no basis upon which there is a rationale, according to the military now, to provide f-16s. >> but you're not ruling it out? >> i am reeling it out for now. >> trace: "for now." the war goes on long enough, it looks like they're going to get fighter jets. >> i'm dumbfounded. they don't need abrams tanks, they do need abrams tanks. they don't need to be told, they do need to be toast. anything you give them, i don't care if it's a rock and a stick, it's going to help win this fight and we need to give it to them. the reason i don't think it's going to happen, we can't even

transfer the mig 29s from poland and other talking f-16s. given everything they need to enact this fight. sue and i want to play this, and unusual answer the president gave on the chinese spy balloon. i want your take on this. >> let me ask about chinese relations, already strained after the chinese spy balloon over the u.s. let me just ask you this first: do we know definitively yet whether or not that's my balloon is flying over the continental u.s. intentionally? >> it is almost not relevant. once it was over the united states. >> so there's a possibility that president xi didn't know? >> there's a possibility that. >> trace: not relevant, xi might not have known. your final thoughts? >> it's more event it doesn't sound possible. this is going to be a catty statement, but that's one of those comments where if someone makes a statement like that, you ought to take them in for a urinalysis. we know president xi knows about it.

it went the entire united states, which, frankly, is a true break in our national security. >> trace: general, thank you for coming on, sir. >> thanks, trace. >> trace: before leaving the white house where his delaware home this weekend, president biden was still struggling to answer the question about why he traveled halfway around the world to eastern europe instead of offering support to americans reeling from the effects of that toxic train derailment. the audio we are about to play isn't great, but the words are on the screen, soliciting the long. >> trace: biden did go on to say that as a meeting was about creating the administration response to the rack, claiming he's keeping close tabs on the situation in east palestine.

and during her trip to africa, the first lady, jill biden, told the associated press friday that her husband is, quoting here, "pretty much ready to announce his reelection campaign." let's bring in philip wegmann. jill biden says he's pretty much ready, and the president said this on "world news tonight." watch. >> my intention has not been from the beginning to run, but there's too many other things i have to finish in the near term before i start campaigning. >> is your age part of your own calculation to whether you run again? >> no, but it's legitimate for people to raise issues about my age. it's totally legitimate to do that. the only thing i can say is watch me. >> trace: the theme here is, yes, i'm old, but i intend to run. >> and this is the same thing we have heard from the president from his very first press conference. he's taking his sweet time to make an announcement, but those comments in the comments of the first lady, when you look at them in light of what we heard at the state of the union, that

biden wants to "finish the job," it's clear that he's gearing up for a second run. the thing about that theme of finishing the job is that it's a retrospective, and i think this administration, as they prepare for a reelection bid, they don't want so much of a referendum on past accomplishment or past failures. instead, they really want a race. in particular, they like to run against donald trump because then they can roll out the same old playbook. >> trace: that's exactly right. i want to put up the marist poll because this is among democrats and independents who lean democrat paid to have a better chance of winning if biden is the party nominee? 50% say yes, 45% say someone else. the rest, unsure. but i want to go to the next one because dems angling for the 2024 if biden doesn't run, there are some people out there who are not 100% convinced that he's going to run. >> if you look at that list right there, which of those rising stars on the democratic side? who have those people on the deep bench wants to go down in

history as potentially the ted kennedy who challenged jimmy carter? they don't want that hanging around them. i think that is one of the best defense is that biden has here. he can save democrats, i might not be perfect, progressive scum of the enemy is at the gate. donald trump is running again. i beat him once, i could do it again. why switch horses mid-race? >> trace: donald trump is running again, nikki haley is running again. the rest of the baseball cards, there's a lot of people in the g.o.p. side that maybe running again because they are out trying their sales pitches across the country. they're just trying it out, phil. they're not really running. who do we like in that field? >> this "will they come a long day" routine is going to keep you and i busy for the next couple of years certainly. my favorite politicians are the went to give me calls back when i'm writing my stories. >> trace: [laughs] >> we are in a classic shadow primary. other than donald trump and nikki haley, what's happening is that these contenders are making the circuit and they are appealing not to voters but to donors. we are hearing currently from

level the playing field for discourse on campus. and brand-new tonight, the children's book publisher who faced criticism for editing words like "fat" from the famous roald dahl books is now backtracking. puffin says they will also release roald dahl original works later this year as a classic collection. this will be alongside the so-called inclusive version. we will let you know which becomes a better seller. ♪ ♪ in the fox news at night common sense department is fascinated t the new medical guidelines for treating young people who are -- forgive me, weird police -- fat. turns out more than 14 million children and teens are clinically obese. so now the fat lawsuit movement wants to target pediatricians. and you should know that at least a dozen of these fat lawsuits have already been successful. in places like mcdonald's. when a doctors? here is the reasoning for a pediatrician to see these kids

once or twice a year should now be responsible for telling parents their kids are obese, because parents may not realize that kids are obese. instead thinking they are chubby or carrying some baby fat. so common sense has this right, the parents who filled their fridge with cookies, cakes, and sugary drinks come and make six or seven fast food trips a week, get a free pass, and the doctors get sued. you can bet it won't be long before every overweight kid in america is on medication, because, as the psychiatrist forget long ago, nothing like drugs to prevent lawsuits. and common sense does not fail to see the irony. the same people who find the word "fat" offensive and would like to cancel you for calling kids fat are in favor of suing doctors for not telling kids they are fat. ♪ ♪ and now it's time to shine our friday night media spotlight on the highs and lows of media

but he hit the nail right on the head. he woke up on the right side of the bed for once. it was the old jake tapper, trace. >> trace: you look at msnbc and cnn, and they are kind of in a battle. and i don't know why they are both going after fox. they are in a battle. >> he would often say when you want to know what's going on at fox news without watching fox news, they would be the ones that will tell you exactly what's going on. msnbc, if you look at the ratings, they are relying more on older viewers. so as people get older and older, they have to figure out a way to keep younger viewers. >> trace: joy behar says people in east palestine "got what they deserved" by voting for trump. watch. >> i don't know why they would ever vote for him. for somebody who -- by the way, he placed someone with deep ties to the chemical industry into the chemical safety office. that's who you voted for in that district. donald trump, who reduces all safety. he did. >> trace: that's a woman who says more offensive things than

>> it's been really good. thanks for having us on, by the way, trace. i think some of the new members who have never seen this situation, they seen reports about what's going on, they really got their eyes opened on the real challenges before us. that is that the drug cartels have essentially taken control of our southern border with the policies that are being implemented by dhs and of course the president. >> trace: and it's interesting because a lot of your democratic colleagues see you down there and they say this is a political stunt, that this is not going to lead to solutions. in return, what do you say to them, sir? >> if you just listen to the arguments that are making, they are making the argument that all of the fentanyl comes across the points of entry. well, any person with common sense knows that's absolutely not true. the cartels are hitting the crossing points with mass waves of people. it's causing border patrol to

have two look at rural areas. we have game camera footage of tons of people coming across with fentanyl. clearly their arguments are just subterfuge and dishonesty, to be completely truthful about what they're doing. also, they want to say that it is an immigration issue. we've got to fix the immigration laws. so if they just enforce the laws on the books, the books that were there when president trump was in, we wouldn't have this problem. the problem is very clear in the border patrol guys were very honest about it. the problem is because the administration took 90-something executive actions to undo the laws, to undo migrant protection protocols. they have created an incentive for people are flooding the border. >> trace: lastly i want to know what was the most instructive part of this for you. was there something that you said, "huh, i didn't realize

social media. our next guest believes the religious revival at >> dana: university in small-town kentucky is not over, it's just beginning. he aims to give that spiritual momentum flowing with a big event in lexington this sunday. with us now, the founder. i just want to know what you think is going on. why are these revivals popping up at colleges across the country and even other schools across the country? >> hey, trace. thanks for having me on. i think you said it right, this revival is spreading. it's bigger than any one location. the same day, february 8th, when the revival started at asbury, students at oklahoma university had been praying and they got word that the university opened the door for the stadium. so a stadium event is coming in april. i'm hearing that in seattle's, high schools are seeing revival breakout. i think why this is happening,

people have been so hurt the last three years, these kids have been under so much pressure, mental health, i think god's healing a generation. they have turned to everything else. our country has turned to everything else. they are turning to jesus and he is healing. >> trace: when you stay at the window in time, extremely mean by that. >> i think we live in a moment -- listen, there are things that happen, moments that come. 1970 was last time this happened at asbury. it was the jesus people movement. this is a window of opportunity. i believe god is speaking, he is stirring, lives are being changed. i had a newspaper reported today start crying on the phone, give her life to jesus. this is not normal. college campuses, we saw university of michigan, university of wisconsin, university of minnesota. higher percentages of young people saying yes to jesus then we have seen in 20 years.

the hunger is real, and it's now. >> trace: tell us about the revival you are hosting on sunday in lexington, kentucky. what's different about it? what is your goal here, nick? >> listen, i think this movement, the leaders at asbury are amazing, they are godly. it is so incredible how they have led, and they've released this to the nation and to the nations. meetings are happening everywhere. some of my friends, leaders across the country, pastors, campus ministry workers, we believe that now is the time to rally the troops and mobilize to see this spread across the nation, so young people are coming -- i have a friend is trying to get back from argentina. people are coming from california, new york, florida. all these fires are going to come to rupp arena. the sign outside says "it's time for a positive disruption." i think that's what revival is. it is god positively disrupting us, bringing us back to life. so this weekend it's going to be

do you think gen z has a hunger for religion? maybe spiritual guidance? interesting, kevin corke. i want to talk to you about this for us, because all these kids you talk to you, even the ones who are somewhat cynical and skeptical, they are in and they think it's legit. >> i think it's true and i think what happens is you look for answers and you can find fun and find ways to fill empty spaces in your heart and your soul. but eventually if the right person is they are at the right time, it might just spark your interest. i'm very fascinated by this story. >> trace: we talked to a girl named haley anderson, she was at asbury. she said she went to chapel and she had to go do some errands and she left. a friend called her about three hours later and said, you need to come back. she came back and she stayed, and that is kind of what you are seeing around the country. >> i had to come and experience it for myself, and it was one of the most life-changing encounters i've ever had.

this generation is hungry. i think we have mislabeled them. we've misunderstood them, they are way more spiritual than we thought, and we have to be honest, it's the teenagers that are leading the charge in this revival, and we are having this conversation because of a bunch of kids that many people have written off. >> these kids really are, they're having an impact, jackie ibanez, on the entire country. we have been watching this and it started out as asbury. we have them on the show, then you start getting into any think, this is phenomenal. your thoughts? >> i agree with everybody. i think we are all born with the light of christ. some people, it burns brighter than others. with everything that's been going on, there is something about the truth. the gospel of jesus christ, you can feel it. it's palpable. the world has so much confusion going on but there is something solid. >> trace: we asked followers, do you think gen z has a hunger for religion and spiritual
