chinese facility started the pan pandemic. >> the f.b.i. has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in wuhan. the f.b.i. has agents, professionals, analysts, etc. , who focus specifically on the dangers of biological threats. so here you are talking about a potential leak from a chinese government-controlled lab that killed millions of americans. that's precisely what that capability was designed for. >> bill: wow. the mounting evidence sparking a push for accountability. special house committee on china held its first hearing last night. lawmakers both sides republicans and democrats calling for action not only on covid but also on china's threats against taiwan and the role in the deadly fentanyl trade today. >> dana: glenn youngkin is on

union at the height of the cold war. >> do you think that china poses a greater threat to our freedom and the world's freedom than the soviet union ever did? >> yes, i do. >> president biden is not weighing in on the f.b.i. nor energy department's classified assessments. many lawmakers want to see an invoice sent to china for wrecking the u.s. economy. >> dana: thank you. >> bill: want to bring in the republican governor out of virginia, a busy man. he lives his life in a hurry. >> thank you for having me. >> bill: we have to recognize two things. the competition is here and the consensus in washington is here. republicans and democrats participating in the hearing last night. with that being said, what should in your view be the relationship between beijing and washington. >> we first have to identify the fact that what chinese
6:04 am
government's goal is to dominate the world and do it at the expense of the united states. we're seeing bipartisan support for that view but unfortunately the democrats the end to pull up short, right? when it gets difficult they compromise and we have to have unity on this point. even chuck schumer said it the other day. big stop number one. it's not a friendly rivalry. this is, in fact, a race to win the future of the globe and china is trying to do it at the expense of the united states. what that means is that we cannot be weak and what the biden administration has been at every step along the way with china is weak. we see the way they handled democratic protests in hong kong. they crushed them. they use every avenue possible in surveillance between tiktok that we banned in virginia and finally the federal government after 30 states have banned tiktok. i don't call that leadership but following.
6:05 am
virginia we have banned bad actors from buying our farmland. finally we have to recognize that the most coercive step of the chinese government is through economic imperialism. it was a protection market of old and now they're projecting their come knifed ideology through economics around the world and we have to recognize and stand up for the most trusted industries we know are the future of the united states. semi conductor. electric vehicles and batteries, energy supplied broadly which includes traditional energy supplies. we have to protect these industry and trusted slight chains that are american dominated or trusted international partners. it's clear, china, north korea, iran, russia, these aren't trusted international partners and make sure they aren't part of our supply chains. >> dana: you come from the private sector and i think we can all agree what the committee is talking about, the government
6:06 am
needs to do something different with china. do you think the business come unity and wall this is on the same page but want to continue to do business with china even though there is a national security conflict coming? >> this has been the footsy the business community played with china for so long. reality is china has changed dramatically in the last 5 to 10 years and what used to be a very china-focused strategy to protect their market. in 2016, general motors is trying to sell electric vehicles in china using a korean battery. the chinese government says no, you must use a chinese manufacturer. they pushed in a company into that. that's wildly protectionist for chinese economy. now they push it outside of china. so businesses just need to wake up. this is what they'll do and how they are acting. it is an imperialistic approach
6:07 am
and businesses need to step back is this market comfortable? >> bill: we need to define that relationship. >> real quick. why we have to identify these most important industries that are key to our national security that we cannot compromise on. unfortunately the biden administration is willing to compromise on anything. they stand up and as soon as it gets tough they'll step back and allow china to do what they need to do. they have to stand up now. >> bill: you mentioned joe biden. the other day he went to virginia. you said he should go to east palestine, ohio. he said the following about how he characterizes the republican party. watch. >> president biden: an awful lot of really good republicans. the maga republicans are a different breed of cat. they are very different. kind of like in my view two republican parties. >> unfortunately you are from ohio. he should go to ohio. when there is americans in need
6:08 am
and they are in need of leadership a president should show up. what he is demonstrating he will choose politics over people. he will come to virginia. i understand why he wants to come to virginia. virginia is rocking and rolling. when i was elected in 2021 and been in office a little over a year we have virginia moving economically. we're fixing education and standing up for law enforcement. i know why he wants to come to virginia because we're rocking and rolling. the flip side is you have to lead when you are president. he is a follower. unfortunately the ohio situation particularly screams for leadership and he hasn't done it. the challenge we have is joe biden would rather try to divide us as a nation and try to put people in this or that box as opposed to now bring us together and recognize we have to have unity against china. unity on the border because we miss fix the border. it is a national security crisis where we are seeing not only people's lives put in jeopardy
6:09 am
but seeing the free flow of fentanyl poisoning people all over america. virginia is a border state today. we have to be lock armed in our economy. joe biden is driving inflation now and says raise taxes. in virginia we're lowering taxes. people need more access to their money at a time when the economy is so tough. >> bill: all he has to do is listen to the chris wray interview with bret from last night. >> dana: jeff row is on the sunday show this weekend. >> reality is this is a two-person race between donald trump and ron desantis. a small field. the money is not there. debate stage rules will keep it very limited. a donor threshold and national polling. there is no room for a third or fourth or fifth person in this race. >> dana: is that how you see it? >> i am not looking at 2024 right now. i look at 2023.
6:10 am
we just got through our legislative session and i have a budget to negotiate. our priorities in virginia, i believe, are representative of the priorities for america. we have to get taxes down, allow people to keep more of their own money. invest in education and stand for excellence in education not watered down priorities. we have to stand up for law enforcement. >> dana: if you get into the 2024 race you can't do it at the end of 2023. that is happening now. >> i have said to everyone. this question i get asked quite a bit. i'm humbled by it. i was a kid 40 years washing dishes and taking out trash and three years ago in the business world. so while i'm reasonably new to this what i know is that i have to stay foixed on the job i'm hired to do. that job is to make sure that virginia continues to drive towards that excellent position where businesses come, where people -- parents feel confident their children will receive a great education and communities are safe. these are the issues americans
6:11 am
are focused on and why virginia gets so much attention. we came in at a time when virginia had moved so far to the left and all of these key principles were compromised. in the little over a year i've been governor we've taken them all head on and delivered on what we said. >> bill: sounds like a campaign in the works here. jeff rowe is a strategist for you came back on monday and called you a unicorn in american politics and then said you will make a lane for yourself you don't need one created for you. describe that lane for us today as we sit here on the first of march 2020. >> so again thank you. those are comments that jeff made. i have not talked to jeff about these comments over the weekend. what i have been so focused on is delivering for virginia. you see, there is a reality which is people elect you because they want to trust you
6:12 am
to deliver. i believe i was elected at a time when trust had been eroded in the political system in virginia and they wanted a governor to deliver for tax cuts and fixing education and making government work better and delivering behavioral health outcomes to deliver for all pooh emotion in virginia. that's my job. if i deliver well on those priorities, then people in virginia will be happy they elected glenn youngkin as governor. >> dana: do you think they would want a governor to run for re-election. >> we have one term governors. we better get going. i bring a real sense of urgency to the job. we work hard, our administration works hard. i told everybody at a cabinet meeting. we have another gear. we can accelerate and deliver more and do it faster. this is a whole new approach to government and we prove it
6:13 am
works. it takes a different mindset and it takes a different kind of leader. one who understands how to not just scope out where we want to go but to get us there. >> bill: your state constitution limits you to one term so you will have some decisions to make eventually. thank you for coming in today. okay? we'll stay in contact. >> dana: great to have you. thank you so much. political news. >> in the end you don't always win every battle but you never regret taking on the powerful and bringing in the light. >> dana: lori lightfoot should have had a heavy hand if her city's crime crisis. she lost her bid for re-election. the first chicago mayor to do so in nearly 40 years. democrats vallas and johnson advance to a runoff. garrett tenney is live in chicago. >> after four years chicagoans want to take a new direction and lori lightfoot missed out on the runoff by three points to

brandon johnson who got 20% of the vote and face former chicago schools head paul vallas who got 33% in the runoff. the two candidates have vastly different strategies for how to get the city turned around. johnson endorsed by the teachers union wants to raise taxes and has supported defunding the police. he stopped using that term on the campaign trail but says his goal is redirect money to social services to try to address the root causes of crime. here he is last night. >> we deserve a chicago that is better, stronger, safer for everyone. no matter where you live, no matter what you look like. you deserve to have a better, stronger, safer chicago. >> paul vallas endorsed by the police union has focused his entire campaign message on crime argues the city needs to hire more police officers and reverse policies that he argues
6:15 am
restricts them from doing their jobs. >> i want to thank the voters of chicago for making this campaign about the issues and nothing but the issues. public safety is the fundamental right of every american. it is a civil right. we will make chicago the safest city in america. >> that's a lot easier said than done. crime and safety are expected to continue to be the top issues in this race. the two candidates have vastly different strategies on how to achieve that. >> dana: remarkable results. glad you were there to cover it for us. thank you. >> a six fought four shooter cannot be excluded from the murder of mailingy and paul. >> nothing that would exclude that height. i cannot inclued or exclude two shooters.

6:23 am
one of the things we saw in east palestine. the firefighters weren't aware of what was on the train when they went and responded to this train crash in the first place. we would make it so rail companies have to label these trains as high hazards so local authorities know what's on the trains. who other important things. the first is we would require nat national sensor installation would hopefully not be repeated in other situations. finally, we give the fining process teeth. right now when the train companies cause these problems, it is little more than a slap on the wrist. we actually would incrows the penalties, make it so if a train company causes what happened in east palestine they suffer some real consequences. all of this is an important part of making our railways safer and making sure what happened in east palestine either doesn't happen again or certainly happens much less frequently in the future.
6:24 am
>> bill: we watch governor dewine live. he and his wife have arrived in east palestine and he made several trips there. you have as well. what strikes me, senator, requiring two-person crews. this train had three and also this enhancing of safety procedures for all trains as they move across the country. it sounds like a good idea but what specifically in here would have prevented east palestine from happening. >> well one of the things we've learned. you've heard pete buttigieg and other folks from the left say it with as caused by trump-era reregulation. that's actually not true. it was caused by a defective ball bearing. one of the things the legislation would do is require a national sensor system to identify the ball bearing defects as they are happening. you find it, catch it, repair it before you have the catastrophic situation like what you had in
6:25 am
east palestine. that is the main thing to keep it from happening again. >> bill: ultimately you are still relying on human beings to do their jobs, right? >> sure. that's right. look, one of the things we do in this legislation is require additional crewing. right now allot of these trains have one person crews. on this one there was a three-person crew. we talk about a thousand train derailments in this country every year. this legislation would hopefully make that less likely by increasing the number of people on the trains. look, it is still a small crew. these guys are effective and know what they are doing. increasing the number of personnel on these trains would have a positive impact in bringing down some of the train crashes. >> bill: pete buttigieg yesterday on the lessons talking on cnn. >> we're focusing on lessons learned when it comes to rail safety. the reality is that the freight rail industry has wielded a lot of power in washington but this is a moment when i believe we
6:26 am
can raise the bar in terms of what we expect and what we require from freight railroads so fewer communities have to go through what the people of east palestine are dealing with right now. >> bill: it sounds on the surface he is talking about a lot of things you are talking about here. how do you think this administration has done, senator? >> look, i have to say it has been catastrophic. he sounds good but what he has done has been a total disaster. if you look from the early days of the crisis, pete buttigieg instead of asking tough questions about why this happened and going about fixing them. he immediately tried to blame the prior administration and he blamed them for a problem that wasn't even real. even the "washington post" has fact checked the leadership of the department of transportation and said it was not trump-era deregulation that caused the problem but a lot of issues that we need to fix. if you are too busy blaming the prior administration instead of leading and doing your job you will never fix the problem. i think secretary butte butte

bets a bit by strengthening our presence in the region and strengthening friends and allies. it is a different china today because xi had a very different idea in mind for where china should head. he decided china should step up, take its place in the international system, try to modify that international system so it is more favorable to china and adopted a much more aggressive policy internationally with respect to the neighborhood but also globally. that is a different china. i think it really is the result of a leader xi who had a different agenda for his country. it is a good thing we did those efforts we took to strengthen allies in the region. it is our relationship with those allies that we will need in order to deal with the china challenge. >> dana: steve hadley, congratulations on the book and appreciate you coming on. love to see you more often. >> thanks for having me.
