for the two suspects. one already in custody. we will bring you more on the breaking news as it comes in this morning. >> ainsley: now another fox news alert. tragedy in chicago. where a police officer there was killed in a shootout while chasing a suspect through the streets. >> griff: fallen officers colleagues somber salute as they mourn the loss of one of their own. todd piro with the breaking developments. >> todd: the identity has not been released was responding to the man chasing a woman down the street with a gun. when the officer arrived on scene the 18-year-old suspect made a run for it. he chased after him before the suspect opened fire at close range, striking the officer in the head. police say the suspected cop killer was also wounded and is currently in critical condition. chicago police department now mourning the loss of their colleague who was a five-year veteran on the force. >> try to get through this very difficult time for chicago police department.

we're heart broken. this young officer, who had right at five years on this department had a bright future ahead of him and this is something that no family should have to face. >> the officer's death coming the same day man you just heard from chicago police superintendent david brown and chicago u.s. attorney john lausch announcing the resignation following lori lightfoot's failed bid for reelections. blaming her loss on the color of her skin and overheard saying, quote: i am black woman, let's not forget certain folks, frankly, don't support us in leadership roles. but many in chicago say they voted against lightfoot because of a sharp rise in crime up 61% from last year alone. a field of candidates narrowed to two vallas face johnson in april's runoff. back to you. >> brian: it wasn't close.

[applause] i am absolutely thankful. absolutely thankful that she is gone and i'm going to tell you the truth. my baby brother was murdered june 24th of last year. he would have been 19 years old two mondays ago. but there's also been thousands of people murdered in the city of chicago. almost 10,000 people shot and this mayor, who tries to coalesce black voters around her candidacy at the end of her term was very clear to me, her message i believe black lives didn't matter to her black votes mattered to her. >> brian: nothing to do with her race, gender, sexuality. everybody knows it.

i don't even know that she believes she is saying it. people in world experiencing real racist or experiencing some headwinds because of the color of their skin, wherever that might be angry at her for making something up. this is the result of poor performance over four years. one of the worst individuals. evidently she treats her staff terribly, treats the press terribly. does a terrible job as a mayor and most importantly she has alienated herself from the cops. most of them quit. the ones that weren't backed are not motivated to do their job because they are not supported. they are not going to put their lives on the line for somebody that doesn't care about them. >> ainsley: she revoked the press credentials from a reporter asking her the tough questions. then she said he is not allowed at any of of my press conferences any more. we talked to him in the past. agregianno caldwell lax policies made him move counsel to

florida. he was a father figure to his family. and he was the breadwinner and took care of the kids lost his baby brother christian. he was like a father to christian and he did not feel safekeeping the rest of his family in chicago so he has moved down to florida. >> griff: you know, she is history breaker, obviously, because she is the first black woman and the first openly gay mayor. but then she ends her tenure on a note of being the first democrat to lose re-election in 40 years simply because people still love chicago residents who live there are sick of what is happening not just because of crime but cities losing investment from major corporations. >> brian: because of crime. >> griff: because of crime. so they are going to lose from not only the crime standpoint of residents not feeling safe but also there is no business investment people trying to get out of chicago for that very reason. >> brian: could be the beginning of a new trend. republicans have an opportunity here. the democratic party is looking

♪ >> ainsley: we are back with the latest on the murdaugh double murder trial. in just hours the defense is set to present their closing argument. >> brian: all right. the proceedings coming to a close one day after jurors torer the crime scene where alex murdaugh wife and son were killed. >> griff: lucas tomlinson were live with the details. >> good morning ainsley and brian gave the closing argument in the murdaugh trial lasted 27 days. here is the lead prosecutor describing what he says were the final moments of maggie murdaugh's life. >> maggie sees what happens and she comes running over there, running to her baby, probably the last thing on her mind thinking that it was him who had

done this. she is running to her baby. while he has gotten -- picked up the blackout and opens fire at close range. >> the pressure is on this man on this man were unbearable and all reaching a crescendo the day his wife and son were murdered by him. >> jurors began the day with a visit to the crime scene, the murdaugh home, about 30 minutes from the court house. a defense attorney explained why. >> it could provide some convincing evidence to a juror that may be on the fence. right now, 10 jurors have made up their mind. even 11. and maybe one is on the fence. >> let's take a look at the timeline on june 7th, 2021, murdaugh calls 911 to report his wife maggie and son paul were shot july 14, 2022. murdaugh indicted on two counts of murder. prosecutors say he fatally shot

his wife with a rifle and his son with a shotgun. he pleads not guilty at a bond hearing and his lawyer says he wants to go to trial. january 23rd of this year, murdaugh trial be begins with jy selection and here are the charges against alex murdaugh once again, two counts of murder two, counts of possession of a weapon. he could face 30 years to life in prison. as you mentioned the defense will begin closing arguments at 9:30 this morning, guys. >> griff: lucas tomlinson, thank you very much. listen the nation is captivated on this trial. and it is clear from all the things we have seen that this family, murdaugh family at times appeared very much at times above the law but now there is a pretty strong case to be made even for those jurors that might be sympathetic to this family may be swayed maybe have some for stages removed. if they find him guilty we will find out. >> ainsley: his timeline doesn't

add up. proven to be a liar in so many different cases, stealing money, using the insurance, keeping the insurance money that was supposed to go to the family of the housekeeper that died on the property. and this happened, his wife and his son died the very day that the coo of his law firm approached him and said did you steal this money? and that gotcha moment. and later that night, his wife and his son die. then, a few days later he had a june 10th hearing over his finances related to the multi million dollars wrongful death lawsuit stemming from his son's boating accident where israeli e beach died. >> brian: keeps saying he was out of his mind when he did it. >> ainsley: brian this is what the prosecutor said. the pressures on this man they were all reaching a crescendo the day his wife and son were murdered. this was like nothing he had ever experienced. he had always been one step ahead of the game.

>> griff: when you look at the case that the prosecution laid out, they really went in to the financial stuff but the defense banked their case that if they put him on the stand, murdaugh and got it out there, that he had stolen the money, that he had an opioid addiction that there wouldn't be anything left for the prosecution. now it really does hinge, i think, on the timing of when he was there because he lied about whether he was there now we know he was. he admitted it. what about that timing? that's what people are looking at about five minutes. >> griff: the blackout rifle that was used to kill maggie was now gone. that was the family's rifle they kept talking about during the trial that that was paul's favorite rifle. that he would carry it around regularly because they had wild boar on their property and they wanted to make sure they had a weapon. and alex's favorite gun according to his attorney was the bin nellie super black eagle 12 gauge shotgun. that was never recovered either. two family guns matched the description of the bullets that killed both of them and they are

play for a coach that has a strong faith. >> brian: a lot of parents want their kids. >> ainsley: look at dash cam ato sweeney. he doesn't force anyone to pray or do a bible study. widely known so deeply engrained in his faith and love of the lord you hear parents all the time i want my kids to play for clemson not only great team but a great coach. >> brian: other guys will say yeah, that's not for me. pick another school. that's pretty much in the whole recruiting process. first liberty institute has this view of this and this is in support of dion. the supreme court has repeatedly held that public school employees may engage in religious expression and exercise. therefore, public universities like colorado university may not target coach sanders or other members of the football team for exercising con sticial rights. the school says we will send you to the offers of institutional equity and compliance if you have a problem deion sanders praying in your vicinity.

♪ >> ashley: we are back with your headlines starting with the latest in the idaho murders. newly unsealed court documents revealing the suspect bryan kohberger has no ties to the families of the four victims it. comes after claims from xana kernodle's mom that public defender ann taylor was once representing her for unrelated drug charges. taylor says she has never met kernodle's mom and never provided her any legal advice. the court has agreed there is no conflict of interest and taylor can continue on as kohberger's lawyer. iowa senator chuck grassley says more than a dozen sources came to his office to accuse the president's son, hunter biden of criminal conduct. listen to this. >> the alleged volume and similarity of the information would demand that the justice department investigate the truth and accuracy of the information. >> i promised to leave the matter of hunter biden in the hands of the u.s. attorney for the district of delaware who was

and bears come out of highwayer nation. those are your headlines. send it to adam klotz with fox weather forecast. good morning, adam. >> little bit on the cool side on fox square. big weather story we are tracking across the country today that is the potential for severe weather. this is what it looks on satellite and radar across the country. severe weather targeting a portion as we stretch down to the south and east across portions of texas stretching up into arkansas and louisiana. all areas where we are going to be seeing that potential for severe weather here on this thursday. now, what we are highlighting there that probably will be popping up just towards the east of dallas, stretching into arkansas and louisiana. targeting time 3:00 p.m. all the way into the overnight hours. we could see tornadoes running up to a category 2 or greater. we could see severe thunderstorms. that will include hail that will include winds up to 60 and 70 miles per hour. this is going to be a big system. of course we will be paying attention to it. track by downloading the fox

what why have watched and witnessed friends worry about the safety of their family when they're sitting outside. >> one of the reasons i moved to buckhead as a single woman is because i helped raise my niece and nephew. one of the reasons i moved is because of safety. and that has declined. i have also heard other people say well, welcome to the real world. there's crime all around atlanta. well, we pay a premium, most of us. definitely not wealthy and i'm definitely not one of the white people who want to get away from black people or a class issue. i'm just a regular, hard-working person who lives in buckhead and seen the decline. so, unfortunately, people in other areas have not held their representatives accountable for the crime. so now that it's happening here, i think the common thing is we're not going to sit back and just say okay, crime is
