>> griff: took the jury less than three hours to convict him of the murder of his wife and son. >> ainsley: charles watson is outside of the court house in walter borough, south carolina. what is the latest? what are you expecting this morning will seek life in prison without the possibility of parole when alec murdaugh is sentenced behind me this morning for the murders of his wife maggie and son paul. after thursday's verdict alec was remanded almost immediately and let out ever the cool tan county courthouse he is staring at 30 years to life in prison after the jury came back guilty of two counts of murder and two counts of possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

>> griff: it sure. will let's bring in susan williams, south carolina based criminal defense attorney and susan, i spoke to you right in front of that courthouse the day after this double murder. >> here we are now, your reaction to this verdict? >> i was completely shocked. after i heard that there was a verdict, i actually thought that it was a hoax. because i had no idea that the verdict would come in in less than two hours. which is about the same amount of time that alec murdaugh spent on the stand. >> ainsley: you know, we have all watched this case. i know you live in south carolina. south carolina was glued to the tv over this because many people know the family. south carolina is small, y'all, people don't leave south carolina generally. everyone kind of knows everyone. if i didn't know you griff, our moms might have gone to college together. it's just all woven together. and, susan, you know this for sure. what was it during the trial that really stands out? for me in the very beginning everyone here at fox was saying, you know, he stole a lot of

money but that doesn't mean that he's a murderer. but as the trial went on and you saw how his decisions affected his friends, affected his family, people got on the stand and they were crying and then you watch the netflix thing and then you watch the low country on apple tv. you got a sense of how harmful he had -- what he had done to people's lives throughout the years. and then i started to think people are getting sick of this guy. he's going to be guilty. what did you think? >> ainsley, i think the smoking gun of this case was the video of alex at the kennel. why do i think this? he consistently lied to the police about his presence at the murder scene. because he lied, he had to take the stand and explain to the jury why he lied. >> brian: is there anything that makes you think he will not get maximum today whether it comes to the sentencing? he has got 30 minimum, max is life. >> if i had to guess, just my

own conjecture just from seeing what judge newman said yesterday, a little bit of what he said, i think the judge newman is probably going to give him life and certainly is -- whenever alex said that the person who did this thought about it or planned it for a long time, i think the jury believed him when he said that. >> griff: hey, susan, let me walk it past this trial and go back to as ainsley was pointing out. we heard in this trial all the other situations from the death of mallory beach and then of course the reopening of the steven schmidt case. i just have been texting in the last 30 minutes with todd proctor who was the lead sled detective on that case. he has now since retired. he said it is still open, obviously. where do you see things going? will other investigations come about? >> my understanding is that the stephen smith case investigation was reopened in -- alongside

that reagan had brokered and the trump administration pulled out of it. the reality is they suspended they did not completely withdrawal from it. opening up the opportunity to come back to it. i think why they pulled out, frankly, is just to raise the whole issue once again of nuclear weapons to use that as leverage for the united states and the west, not to provide all the optimum assistance that the ukrainians want. and, obviously, they have been using nuclear weapons right from the outset as a potential threat of escalation. and, frankly, that is one of the reasons why these weapons have been moved in at such a slow rate and piecemeal after initially being rejected. but certainly talking and getting back to the issue of a nuclear treaty is the right thing to do but russia is likely not going to comply and it doesn't make much sense staying in a treaty where your partner is violating it anyway.

bakhmut is not strategic but certainly it's got so much publicity surrounding it, ukrainians would want to hold on to this things as much as they possibly can not much of a city left, unfortunately yes, the russians are having such difficult time and made such a contest out of that they have lost thousands and thousands of troops trying to take a town that is not strategically significant, which is the russian way of war. they have used human wave attacks here that have just been mowed down by machine guns which is absolutely stunning even to the ukrainians in terms of how far the russians are fighting this. >> brian: how frustrated are you that i am that we are not pressuring india to stop helping the economy of russia. they are taking over the places that have been vacated by the west. they are also buying oil and gas cheap. they are helping to prop up vladimir putin and, yet, they are supposed to be our ally.

i think they knew and i think this three hours sends a message. i will predict one thing though. i don't think he is going to serve a life sentence. is he going to get a life sentence. he has already tried to take himself out. he has already tried to kill himself. that was before the shame associated with this conviction. i think they need to keep a close eye on him. i don't think he is going to make it. he is going to take himself out or have somebody take himself out. >> ainsley: the sister-in-law marion proctor took the stand he seemed more concerned with protecting paul's reputation than with learning who killed his wife and his child. why do you think he shot his son that night and then turned the gun on his wife? why would he -- how could a dad shoot paul? >> here's the good news they never have to prove it in a murder case, we still don't know with certainty. that's what said with the prosecution. i buy it i think he is that disturbed that he wanted to shift focus away from him he is that self-centered but we will never know. he knows. he is the only one who knows. and fortunately prosecutors don't have to prove that.

religious expression and therefore universities like university of colorado more members of the football staff for exercising constitutional rights on campus? how do you see it? >> well, this is just the latest in an attempt to, i guess, quelch or silence religious expression in this country. this is ongoing struggle. even when we look back at kennedy verse primgton the supreme court upheld whether you are employed by a public institution or not you as a american citizen has a constitutional right to religious expression. for coach sanders, look, he is who he is. he said that repeatedly. and during my 21 years of playing football, nfl for 16 years, college for four years. there were numerous times where there was religious expression but also there was the cav vote that if you don't believe in this, you don't have to be a part of it. so, there's a struggle that we're seeing right here. it's a struggle that we should have but as americans, no matter what your religion is.

we have to stand up for religious freedom and religious expression because that is one of the hallmarks of this republic. >> griff: clearly deion sanders is not going to back down. do you support him taking this fight to whatever next level it goes? >> >> i do. i do. again, these things are going to keep happening. we saw this last year in the supreme court. so, i went back, griff, and read the initial letter from the freedom from religion foundation. and in the letter, they made some assumptions. they made some claims not based on players. not based on people that were employed by colorado. they made claims. colorado residents worried about what was happening or what might happen at colorado with deion sanders coming there. so, again, i think this is just another attempt but as americans of all religions, whether you are an atheist or not, i think it's imperative that we understand that freedom of religious expression is important. we have to protect that. we have to be people that stand up against that for all
