threatening the united states. welcome to a new hour of "america's newsroom," i'm dana perino. >> bill: i'm bill hemmer, good morning to you at home. today's hearing comes amid growing threats as mexican cartels hold control along the southern border. friday's kidnapping of four americans in mexico the latest example of growing threats and deadly danger. two of the four americans were found dead, two survived and are now back in the u.s. being treated in a brownsville, texas hospital. the white house yesterday calling cartel violence a top priority. >> americans are being slaughtered, would president biden take the same approach if it was al qaeda or isis operating just across the border from an american city. >> the president takes this very seriously issue the fbi and other agents have been on top of this from day one. that is what he will continue to
7:02 am
do. >> would president biden consider using the u.s. military to disrupt cartel operations? >> i will not get into the military and how it is being used. >> dana: biden administration under pressure as border crisis spireals out of control. the white house considering plans to bring back some trump-area policy like detaining families that enter the u.s. illegally bret baier and mark meridith ahead with detention on american families. first live at the justice department, what are they going to do, david? >> it is a great question and as the two americans continue to recover in the texas hospital, it is a safe bet fbi director chris wray, bill burns and others will be asked specifically about cartels. many senators believe a worldwide threat hearing that is

taking place today includes threat of cartels just across the border. this video is chilling, we've been showing it for a couple days now. crossed into mexico for a medical procedure, being removed from a white van and being thrown into the back of a flat-bed truck and yesterday merrick garland addressed this tragedy. >> cartels are responsible for the deaths of americans and we are fighting as hard as possible, the dea and fbi are doing everything to dismantle and prosecute leaders of the cartel and networks they depend on. >> garland warned of cartels last weekdays before this tragedy took place. the problem, doj admit they need more people employed to remedy this serious threat, garland predecessor, former attorney general bill barr took it several steps forward when asked about cartels operating on the

7:05 am
families together at the border. mark meridith has more. is that where it is going, mark? >> good morning. that is the big question, the white house is under growing pressure to address a surge of migrants crossing into the united states with end of title 42. now "new york times" and other outlets reporting they would go back to detaining migrant families, reversal from what we have seen the last few years. we reached out to department of homeland security and they say no decision has been made. the administration will prioritize humane processing of migrants and white house is facing questions about this possibility. >> you aren't ruling it out, why is this considered a possible option now? >> i will not comment on rumors out there, i'm not saying it is being considered. >> currently families are allowed into the u.s. and told to appear in immigration court
7:06 am
later. this change in policy could mean the families be held in detention centers. a just, safe and humane immigration system should not place families in detention, should not return to the past where families are detained in sub-standard condition with children. major political problem because you have progressive groups, including caucus we just talked about who say should not be considered, the white house insisting no final decision has been made. the president will head out west next week. >> bill: thank you, mark, nice to see you from the white house. >> dana: joining us bret baier, anchor of "special report," so good to have. listen to robert o'brian, national security advisor for trump. he made this comment comparing cartels to something we know

7:08 am
that should happen. there are others on capitol hill saying, if you do that, it will enable more illegal immigrants to come in and claim refugee status. bottom line, there are a lot of talks going on to change what is happening on the border. >> bill: michael waltz was with us last hour. get on. get it out of the mind. he talked about using sophisticated military hardware that can see from space and help the mexican government on behalf. is there much talk about that publicly in washington? >> i think the intel side is wide open, bill. you are right. working with the mexican government to go after the cartels is something that i know has been talked about and i've talked to people about it. the trouble is that you have to have buyin from the mexican government and federal and the police and military in mexico and that takes real negotiating
7:09 am
on a government to government level. president biden went to mexico in january, talked about border security. cartels have real control of the cities on the other side of the border. >> dana: intel chiefs sitting down and we'll follow that, bret. one thing we're talking about, threat to national security at the southern border and biden administration is making shift, looking like they might return to holding migrant families, this is something that ended when president biden came into office, but they are thinking of doing that. and representative benny thompson, says i'm alarmed, these policies are cruel and harmful to children and don't prevent families from traveling to the united states. now the presidency has this on his plate, as well.
7:10 am
>> yeah, and getting hit from the right and left on this issue. listen, the biden administration made a conscious effort to try to give the heisman award, the stiff arm to all the trump-era policies they could, especially when it came to border policy, they thought it was bad. now they get into this and the surge increased and fentanyl is coming over in major numbers, they are going to have to shift in some way and have to embrace perhaps some trump-era policy despite the fact the left doesn't want them to. >> dana: i even knew what the heisman meant. >> bill: she's getting better. >> bret: that was for you, dana. >> bill: i've been counseling her, she's coming along. updates and headlines from the intelligence hearing today. >> dana: an awful lot of no
