but decades with the cartel and at this moment, you are bringing a big light to this subject because it is getting worse and worse and killing so many americans in the country every day. who are these cartel members? >> there are tens of thousands of members. and there are some very large cartels, but they are also smaller cartels and essentially act as subcontractors for the larger cartels. they control large parts of mexico. they have completely intimidated the government because they either bribe people because they have oceans of money that they deal with, or they terrorize them, the judge x against them and the police officer does his job, their families could be wiped out and assassinated. so it is a terrible situation. this particular mexican government doesn't have the will to deal with it. i think they are content to

coexist and allow these cartels to operate against the united states. and we have to be realistic about the fact that this is going to take direct american involvement to deal with these cartels appear they can be destroyed. we destroyed the cartels in columbia when we did so in the early 1980s. >> john: this idea of going after them if u.s. military or designated foreign terrorist organizations has got some supporters. lindsey graham supports the use of literary support and dan crenshaw supports military force. ted cruz says things, but i don't think we need to use the military to invade our neighborhood country. dan crenshaw also had an interesting point about designating this foreign terrorist organization. he said that would trigger something that would make it even worse. listen to what he said. >> you don't want to designate them as that, why? because you made millions of people in mexico valiant silent

seekers. so you increased at the border if you call them terrorist. >> john: speak to that idea. if you say terrorist are living in mexico and the terrorists or terrorist organizations, then you give people a legal reason to come to the united states. >> i think just designating them, one, it doesn't give us that much more power. it gives us power to act directly against some of the leaders and the government for potentially colluding with the cartels. but congressman crenshaw is right. it allows the people to say, "welcome if they are terrorists and legitimate refugees, so we don't get anything." the real question and the only question is, how do we deal directly with these cartels? not what we call them, what we do with them. and there is no solution other than using all of the tools we have trying to prosecute your

terrorists. that is the head of the snake. >> john: let me ask you, general barr come about the hearing that wrapped up in congress. the first hearing of the select committee of the weaponization of government. and there was this exchange between elise stefanik and the fbi director over the fbi's involvement with twitter over the hunter biden laptop story. listen. >> where you are aware of the fbi's personnel were in contact with twitter regarding the hunter biden laptops were a question mark >> i don't believe the fbi were in contact with twe hunter laptop story specifically. there were people in contact with russian disinformation efforts. >> where you are where the fbi had hunter biden's laptop since 2019? >> i can't speak to exactly when we had the laptop. >> this stonewalling, director chris wray, the american people deserve answers and this is unacceptable. >> john: so there is this

issue about plausible deniability. the fbi might not mention hunter biden with the laptop but to the degree that even mark zuckerberg, the head of facebook said, "when the hunter biden laptop story came around, this is what the fbi is talking about." >> a little dubious about that. i was there at the time as attorney general. there was approach will make a lot of pressure on the fbi to make sure there was no foreign e in the election. and as far as i was aware, they were giving general briefings to different groups to say we will be on the guard for foreign activity like the bots used in 2016. and i don't know. i think we have to look at exactly what those briefings were and what was being said to those companies. because if they were saying, you know, things like the hunter laptop were getting too

particular about the kind of things they were looking for, that might cross the line in my opinion. now, did mark zuckerberg, was facebook being good citizens into doing what the fbi said? my guess is like every other company, they received general briefings. then, when they were caught doing what they did, they are hiding behind the general. we thought that we were just responding to this general briefing. but this is going to be fact specific and i think you have to find out exactly. >> sandra: this is really serious allegations. the weaponization of the federal government. it doesn't look like things are turning around anytime soon, attorney general. >> the whole idea of the government should encourage to take out stuff that is false, that is a violation of the first amendment. the first amendment actually protects false speech. and for the idea that the government goes and encourages

what do you believe china's military ambitions are at this point? how far are they willing to go, congressman? >> i think we have to take the threat seriously. i led a bipartisan delegation and even though amphibious landing in taiwan is difficult, they could also do a blockade around taiwan to prevent energy from getting into taiwan. they have done that in the past for a day or two if they did that two or three weeks, it would be concerning. my concern is the coercion to apply in taiwan and not just natural invasion. >> congressman of select committee you see the threats involving china and how wants to dominate the world economic lead momentarily at some point in the future. this is described as an existential threat by some people high up in the government where the military purity is the biden administration, is president biden doing enough to meet this threat? >> you know, the good news is we

actually had a meeting, bipartisan meeting with speaker mccarthy in his office and trying to select committee is one committee i want to be bipartisan. wayne we are unified as a country, that is when the ccp has the broadest concern. i think in a bipartisan way there are two things we can do, number one, beefing up taiwan's defense and that is something they want and then bringing back manufacturing. a deficit with china and too many jobs there need to be rebalanced in manufacturing. >> john: congressman, i'm sorry, i noticed you strategically ducked my question. is the biden administration doing enough to meet this threat? >> i do think so. i think the china committee has been very careful not to criticize the president. if you watch the first hearing, they are doing things like beefing up our bases and the philippines. they are working to help expedite the defense to taiwan.

they are helping the manufacturing. are there more things we should be doing as a country? absolutely! but i think it is important to stand behind the commander-in-chief on this. >> sandra: a a lot of people on committees and a lot of talk but we want to see more action because they see china moving in. i want to transition to what we are about to hear from president biden. he is about to unveil his budget and $2 trillion on taxes for the american people. why pick this fight with republicans in this moment? when he's not picking a fight with republicans, he is angering democrats because he's launching a new tax band plan in the middle of an economic crisis in this country with two-thirds of the american people living paycheck to paycheck. you have sky high inflation that the federal reserve is looking to tame. congressman, why do this now? >> i think we have to have basic

math. here are the choices, either you can protect social security and medicare. you know, president trump said we shouldn't have cuts on there. to do that, you have to raise taxes on the wealthy. you can have the numbers work or you can go the way paul ryan wants, which is to raise the retirement age, cut benefits. >> sandra: are you so sure this only affects the wealthy? >> i am. if you look at the president's tax proposal but my question for republicans as this, what way are they going to go? the way of paul ryan and his numbers add up and cuts on social security and raise the retirement age? i disagree with that or no, we can't make these cuts and they have to raise taxes. there are only 1 of 3 options. i support the idea the wealthy have to pay more taxes. if you don't support that, what are you for? >> john: congressman, i have talked to a few people in congress who will privately acknowledge only way to get deficits and debt under control

and to stop this explosion between, beyond the dead, is to reform social security, medicare and medicaid. no political party wants to take the lead on that because flawed by the other. you say that you believe the solution to this is by raising revenues. is there no room for reform in any of these programs? >> i believe you can have social security totally solvent, protected if indefinite future if you scrap the cap and tax income beyond 60,004 social security. that would pay for social security to be solvent. that is the reform we need. >> sandra: i just think a time sky high inflation, we've got a go but congressman, what caused the four decade high inflation? was it spending or not? >> i think it is multiple

system." there appears to be a real disconnect between pete buttigieg and the job. >> well, i think buttigieg is the perfect example of setting up some kind of programs that says, we don't care how competent you are but we care if you fix a box we have created. he happened to be perfect for biden administration because he was the kind of person represented the gay community. it's not about his sexual orientation but competence. the department of transportation is an operating department. the airplanes have to fly. the trains have to move. the roads have to be built. and the ports have to operate. what you have is a secretary of transportation whose peak experience was the part time they a small town. he has no possible ability to

manage this huge complex program. he proved it in the last few months when he didn't know how to respond to the problems that happened with one airline. he did know how to respond the entire air traffic control system was closed down for the first time since 9/11. literally everybody in the country grounded. he didn't know how to respond when we had a train wreck in a small town with a chemical fire. how many times in baseball, that is three strikes. but how many times do you have to watch him to realize buttigieg is a p.r. agent anna goes around applies here and there and makes speeches occasionally. but he doesn't have a clue how to run the department of transportation. for example, i was surprised to learn from him that there are thousand derailments a year. well, if that is true, the program to dramatically reduce that and make it easier and
