merits of this case. >> bill: the rubber could mete the road on this. something to watch. nice to see you. department of justice, david spunt. >> dana: the bodies of two americans killed by a violent cartel last week in mexico have been brought back to the united states. mexican authorities handing them over at a border crossing in brownsville, texas. welcome to a new hour of "america's newsroom," i'm dana perino. it has been an incredible story all week. >> bill: sure has. i'm bill hemmer on friday. two other americans who survived returned to the u.s. tuesday. now there is an apology. the mexican cartel blamed for that attack apparently condemning the violence handing over five of their own gang members along with a letter saying they broke the rules. lawmakers on the hill demanding answers and action calling for a crackdown on the cartels and a secure border. something that cannot come soon enough for all the folks who live there. >> we see the violence that the cartels bring along. we see what they do to the

people that they are trafficking into america, how they enslave them in the sex trade and how the treat these people and leave them for dead in the deserts. we need to pick up the pieces of those families who lose loved ones to fentanyl poisoning. >> dana: mexico's president obrador rejecting claims that mexican drug traffickers are responsible for the fentanyl in the u.s. and saying it is u.s. problem. not mexico's. >> bill: bill melugin back at his post in brownsville, texas, where he has been most of the week. hello. >> good morning to you. it is well established fact that fentanyl is mass-produced in mexico by mexican drug cartels in their labs using chemicals imported from china. mexico's president said they have nothing to do with that and it's all the u.s.'s problem. he said take a look. here we do not produce fentanyl

and we do not have the consumption of fentanyl. why don't they, the united states, take care of their problem of social decay? fentanyl is pouring into the u.s. through mexico. case in point look at these images. dea in los angeles just busting three mexican nationals who had 1 million fentanyl pills in their vehicle. this happened on wednesday in the l.a. area. they are now facing federal charges and potential life in prison if convicted. it is also pouring in through the ports of entry. take a look at these images. nogales, arizona cbp officers seizing almost 550,000 fentanyl pills in just a two-day span this week. all those pills hidden in vehicles coming in from mexico. cbp has seized more than 12,000 pounds of fentanyl at ports of entry since october 1st. again, almost all of that coming in from mexico. in the meantime, take a look at

this video. the bodies of the two deceased americans killed in that cartel attack last friday finally back on u.s. soil. this took place yesterday here in brownsville at the port of entry. the bodies of woodward and brown are back in the u.s. where they will undergo autopsies in the u.s. the cartel is allegedly apologizing for this attack. look at these images. a remarkable development. the gulf cartel reportedly tied up five of their own people, left them near a truck and left a handwritten apology on the windshield essentially saying those five men were responsible, they were undisciplined and they acted without orders from the cartel. they issued an apology to the families of the americans and to the family of the innocent mexican woman. the bystander who was killed during that gunfire. back out here live circling back one more time to the mexican president's comments that fentanyl is not produced in his

country. just three weeks ago the mexican army announced that they busted, quote, the largest fentanyl lab on record in a northern city. the american president may want to check with his own military for what's happening inside his own country. >> bill: bill melugin. >> dana: go to d.c. where lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are demanding answers from top intel officials on the cartel threat, inflow of drugs and border security. gillian turner in washington. >> a bipartisan core -- the anger is bubbling over in the wake of the two americans being murdered in broad daylight just acrows the border. take a listen. >> i don't see any evidence we're getting the cooperation we need from mexico to deal with this crisis at our border. >> this is a war. it truly has become a war.

what did you see in the flurry of activity yesterday? >> it is not a serious governing document. it is an attempt to garner votes and support on the left and he will need that support if he has any chance of getting reelected. it make sense in that respect. but a governing document it's ridiculous. the numbers are absurd. we'll have 80% of federal spending on three things, social security, medicare, and interest on the debt. 17% of discretionary spending which includes defense and in case people live under a rock we have a problem with china. defense spending needs to go up. we need to address these issues and not with some phony we'll tax more. >> bill: he wants to raise taxes 5 trillion. >> 4.9. >> bill: i don't know how much that is. a lot of money. how much did he propose cutting

inside that? >> in taxes? in spending? realistically nothing. he wants to increase government spending. the real message is that the democrats and biden believe that the government isn't involved enough current will i in our lives. our personal lives and businesses and that if they were more involved things would improve which is exactly the opposite of any realistic assessment of what happened over the past two years since he has been in office. we've gone straight downhill. >> dana: do you have recommendations for anyone opposing the president's budget the republicans how they can better persuade america that a budget like that is harmful to their personal interest? >> i think people understand spending. that we are overspending. so if you talk about reducing the size of the bloated administrative state in the country i think people get that. i do think out there there is support for not for cutting social security and medicare but for making them so they are sustainable and reasonable

programs. adjust them to current modern circumstances. these programs are many decades old. it is time they were changed so they could last. they could actually protect younger people, not just people current will i retired. >> bill: a good debate for the campaign season. >> you could convince america on those points. if you go in and say biden is wrong, this is wrong and that wrong and start throwing numbers people turn off. they stop listening. if you talk about reducing government and trying to make programs stable and sustainable people hear that. >> bill: the fed is raising interest rates and continue for most of 2023 is my guess. jobs number we added 311,000 jobs for the month. more than expected. they were looking for 200,000. unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.6%. what did you see in the numbers that came out today and how healthy is the economy? >> a lot of people are trying to get back into the labor market. the saving rate is below

historic levels and card credit spending is above historic levels. people are running out of credit cards and money in savings accounts. the government hand-outs are drying up and disappearing as time goes on. people are having to get back to work. so you see real growth in the retail sector, in hotel and restaurants because those are the entry-level jobs that people get. you have had people sitting out of the economy for three years. they get back at the lower wage jobs to get training they need. wages go down a little or stabilize, which is exactly what should happen. the depressing thing is that the programs that biden implemented over the last two years including not just the america rescue plan which drove this big inflation surge but also infrastructure spending and the green bill they call the inflation reduction act, that spending is infusing money into the economy at the same time powell is doing everything he can to slow the economy.

cammack asking the question. as you sit back this morning and reflect on the hearing what did we learn and where does it egg from here? >> well, it is pretty terrifying when you start to dig into all the different ways we see weaponization of the government against its own citizens. that was one example you had the collusion between the cdc, nih and biden administration silencing, black listing informed scientists who have been nothing but honest brokers in the process but their opinions were silenced because it didn't fit the political narrative. this weaponization extends beyond that. the f.b.i., d.o.j. going after parents. it is every little thing that we have warned against big government growth and so this morning i sit back and say holy smokes, we have a lot of work to do. this is not tin foil hat conspiracy time. this is real efforts to rein in government and empower people back to their constitutional

was tainted because they were republican witnesses. the irony is that those two gentlemen are democrats. this is an american issue. we should all care deeply about the protection of the first amendment. the entire bill of rights. but yet they saw this as a political opportunity to attack people that didn't fit their narrative. this is so far beyond party politics. this speaks to the ultra progressive agenda of dependency and control and they are losing control of the narrative so all the more reason why this select committee on government weaponization is so important. we have to claw back these powers and make sure that people understand that the government works for them, they don't work for the government. >> dana: thank you for joining us today. very interesting to see a lot of these hearings get underway in the last couple of weeks and the weaponization of the federal government is one of those hearings -- committees that we will continue to follow. thanks and have a good weekend. >> have a good one.

troubling trend but it is a painfully slow process. in the meantime as you mentioned the city has lost population each of the last three years, unprecedented in that city. experts are predicting a fourth year after this one. the top reasons are crime, homelessness and high taxes. katie schneider is described as a pretty typical portland liberal. reliable vote for democrats and tax increases but moved her family out of portland to washington state after violent crime became too much for her to bear. the city set a new record for murders. many shootings happened in her eastside neighborhood. this fall the city also set records for car thefts with 11,000 and vandalism with property damage of $19 million. >> haven't heard a gunshot since we moved. it has been great. it's the little things in life. >> some businesses are also leaving. wal-mart is closing its only two portland stores this month

affecting nearly 600 employees. it is believed shoplifting i ni just down the block closed a huge portland store citing rampant shoplifting and they've been grappling with a growing homelessness problem. the portland business alliance found that 78% of residents feel their quality of life is going down. this while income taxes are rapidly going up and are now second only to new york city. >> the question that voters are now really pondering is are we getting the value for what we pay? and i believe that they are making choices now because they don't feel they are getting take value, to go to other places. >> what tax fatigue may finally be setting in. another tax increase in may that would raise taxes for people being evicted to have lawyers, polls show that measure right

finally said the bail reform changes in new york were absurd quote, unquote. what we've seen in washington, d.c., murder and homicide is up 30%, car thefts up over 100% year-to-date. this is absolutely unsustainable and it is happening across the country. and republicans have been very clear on this from the very start. we need to crack down on crime and if states and municipalities are unwilling to keep their residents safe, then the federal government has an obligation to step in. public safety is the number one priority of any government. we have to keep our residents safe. what we're seeing nationwide is a surge in crime due to out of control woke radical policies making our communities less safe and so here we had an opportunity and an obligation as congress to push back against this crazy bill in washington,

d.c. that would reduce penalties on criminals and really hold them accountable. and so we passed that legislation, the senate passed it and we'll sign it today and send it to the president so he can sign it into law. and we can reverse course here. >> bill: when it got to the senate the chicken was already cooked, right? but you had 31 democratic senators vote with republicans. you wonder if that didn't happen how many would have been like what you saw in the house. here is the tweet from the nrcc. too extreme even for biden. just take a sample of the ad that's coming out now to take advantage of this vote. roll it. >> 173 house democrats voted to support reduced sentences for violent crimes. so crazy even president biden won't support the anarchy. >> bill: it goes on from there. i haven't done the math myself

yet but of the 173, how many are in swing districts? >> it seems a good number of them. i have think that's why so many of them are so upset because the rug got pulled out from under them by the president. they were towing the party line to be soft on crime and seemingly learned nothing from the 2022 elections where in new york, for instance, we flipped four democratic seats in large part due to crime. so now they are rueing the day they voted against this bill and supported the radical plan out of washington, d.c. but it shouldn't have taken politics for them to figure this out. they should understand we have a responsibility to keep our residents safe across this country. and this policy, along with policies out of new york and you are seeing in portland, oregon, what you just reported, it has

it is one of the two drugs the protocol people can use for medical abortion, more than half of abortions are performed this way people can do drugs at home but this group is saying it wasn't safe. it never should have been approved and they want to claw it back. if one of the two protocols goes that's the end of it for now. >> dana: elizabeth smith, this is what she said. this case goes to the heart of the fda's authority and the direction they have to look at scientific and medical research and make determinations what is safe. this is being -- everyone is paying a lot of attention to this. what happens in texas court could affect the nation. >> it's possible. yeah. this question about whether the fda did it right back in 2000 and subsequent renewals are trying to go after this process. this judge could do a nationwide injunction to shut it down for the entire country or relevant to this case we'll shut it down in texas to the challenge here.

>> a little bit of appear agenty there. there is already a level of government crackdown. 30 states have banned the chinese app on government devices. the ban spreading to college campuses. at last count 12 states have banned the app on at least some if not all of their public universities. so far bans have been limited to government-related spaces. depending what comes out of washington it could be widespread. >> bill: we'll be watching the hearing. very interesting. nice to see you here in new york. thank you, dana. >> dana: millions of americans retire every year. now some are ready to unretire and return to the workforce. all kinds of reasons for that. lydia hu reporting on why. >> it's about one in six retired americans who are considering going back to work. that's according to a survey by paychecks. the top reasons behind this trend include needing more money and inflation.

on average, this group that is considering unretiring have been out of the workforce since 2019 roughly one year before the pandemic. we had a chance to talk to one south carolina resident who says the rising costs of everyday expenses motivated her to get back to work in education. watch. >> because of everything that has gone up, food, gas went up a lot, and just repair costs on our home but the actual upkeep was through the roof. so i could not just afford that. so i needed to go back to work. >> the number of older adults in the workforce had been growing as some supplement social security and others try to delay drawing it. according to the bureau of labor statistics more than a quarter of adults ages 65 to 74 were working in 2021 and it is projected to grow to more than 30% in 2031.
