9:00 am
i want you to join me in supporting our nation's heroes and their families. it's only $11 a month. go to t2t dot org. only at vanguard, you're more than just an investor you're an owner. that means that your goals are ours too. and vanguard retirement tools and advice can help you get there. that's the value of ownership. . hello, everyone. this is "outnumbered." i'm emily compagno. here with my co-host, harris faulkner, and kayleigh mcenany, and also joining us today, fox business correspondent jerry willis, and former nfl player, army veteran, jake beckett. we begin with brand new numbers on inflation and what they reveal about the
9:01 am
struggles that americans are facing. as the president faces accusations of bailing out wealthy democratic tech donors. the consumer price index is out for the month of february, rising .4% from january, up 6% over last year. food costs are up nearly 10% as a whole, and i don't have to tell you that basic staples like eggs jumped 55%. while gas is down ever so slightly, other energy costs are sky high. and the biggest bank failure since the 2008 disaster is adding to the country's economic concerns. it is also fueling a partisan blame game. republicans blast president biden's response to the silicon valley bank collapse, accusing him of giving special treatment to some of his party's biggest donors. while the white house is busy pointing fingers at the last administration. typical. >> thanks to quick action of my administration the
9:02 am
past few days, americans can have confidence that the bank system is safe. during the obama biden administration, we had tough on banks, including the dodd-frank law to make sure the crisis we saw in 2008 would not happen again. unfortunately the last administration rolled back some of these requirements. >> so jerry, in prime democratic form, the answer according to biden is more government, more regulations, more government. >> more money. more of our money. that's what's disturbing here. i think the thing people are latching onto, right, here's what happened over the weekend, what i think. today people are saying the dow up 400 points, it is all lower, nothing to see, everything will be okay. nothing could be further from the truth and let me tell you why. essentially what the president did and treasury, they said guess what, that $250,000 guarantee that the fdic gives individuals if there's a problem with their bank, all of us have
9:03 am
it, that applies to everybody at any amount. so they can't go out and save silicon valley bank and then a month later, two months later, two years later say they're not going to save this bank and make all the investors whole. the cost is about $15 billion. i can tell you the administration is saying that money will come from fees. but those fees are set up for us, not for these companies who on the west coast deep pocketed venture capitalists are being saved here. and what's happening to americans who are paying 6% inflation? >> and here's my follow-up question, jerry. for those that argue this is a contained environment, that essentially the administration is jumping on the grenade, we have seen in big banks, they're decreasing solvency. people are worried, pulling out their investments. we have seen the market has shuttered with this. we also know that what
9:04 am
prestaged the 2008 financial collapse was in part the government medalling. against this landscape, we are seeing the president increase government intervention with our money as you just described. how will it be contained, how sure and confident can we be it won't have a ripple effect with more devastating consequences. >> i have to tell you, i asked this question to some of my trader sources at the new york stock exchange. working the telephones for you guys, trying to figure out what's going on. they tell me may not be over, we don't know. their positive reaction today is to the idea that what the government is doing is that maybe the federal reserve will stop raising interest rates so fast. they think the next hike will be a quarter point or zero. >> what's interesting, kayleigh, would you forgive me, we have a bit of breaking news on this subject. i'll get this out there. >> of course. department of justice is investigating silicon valley bank collapse.
9:05 am
fox news can confirm independently that the justice department is probing svb collapse. early stages. and as expected, this was first reported by "the wall street journal." this is coming in spurts from david, but i wanted to get those lines to you. >> perfect segue to my question, kayleigh. the shareholders sued the officers of the bank. they argue in the lawsuit that per harris' breaking news, that there was active concealment, that they concealed the way interest rate plays into their fiduciary duty, as gerri described, what the government jumped in to protect doesn't include the shareholders at that level, right, because they assumed risk on their own. perhaps now they'll face civil liability and potential criminal repercussions. but that still doesn't effect average americans watching this and that are concerned for their welfare. >> that's right. everyone is pointing fingers. where i want to point the
9:06 am
finger, where it needs to be pointed, look, there's probably wrongdoing needs to be looked at, i am glad legal recourse is being pursued, but monetary policy and decisions of the government can't be insulated. they can point all day at svb, say there were bad actors here, but they have four pointing back at them because they were involved. we see them blame the last administration, and "the wall street journal" took that i a part, this still would have happened, despite the bipartisan law that changed dodd-frank. i want to point to this. the biden administration must be planting stories, they know they tried to tamp down a crisis. axios had inside biden's move to stop future bank runs, politico, how biden saved silicon valley startups. these headlines don't come about by chance, they come about because you have a white house that realizes they gave a pseudo bailout, some say not, they don't want to look like they're giving taxpayer dollars to rich
9:07 am
silicon valley execs. but we have to ask the question, how did we get here. we go from crisis to crisis. afghanistan, ukraine, inflation, baby formula, bank runs. this wasn't happening during the four years of president trump. it is happening now. they want the narrative to be biden saved the day, the real narrative is biden caused this, and but for the president of the united states, we wouldn't be here. >> prior four years, jake, was a deviation from what the obama administration had that biden resurrected. largest donorship included a silicon valley tech mo moguls, and including the regulation favor they enjoyed for eight years, now these four. to your point, they created this landscape of dependency, as well i argue culturally. the reason the risk assessment team looks the other way with svb is because they were too busy
9:08 am
with the woke distraction to the right. that's why they weren't prepared. like in all industries because of what this administration encouraged. >> it is true. they had no risk management officer, but they had a dei officer at this bank. make no mistake, this is not east palestine bank, ohio valley, this is silicon valley bank. they're going to be taken care of. democrats take care of their own. that's what's happening here. it is true that the ceo of silicon valley bank exercised 3 or $4 million in individual share proceeds. he had nonpublic information at the time there was a run on his bank, still allowed that share purchase or with d draul to go drew. that shows the moral bankruptcy of the silicon valley bank executives and the venture capital government relationship, the true public/private partnership that's corrupting our country. >> sounds like a paul pelosi move. >> no doubt. just to get back to what
9:09 am
you were saying about that pool of people that bank there, the richest of the rich, bailing them out far above the fdic insured amount of 250,000, all that we can have. a lot of donors are democrat at that bank, maybe not so much donors as palstein, ohio. just an observation. >> those rules won't apply to regular americans. you will not get those benefits. that's what's so upsetting. i think this technically is a bailout. you have to call it a bailout. >> so two investigations. the justice department, securities and exchanges commission both investigating the collapse of silicon valley bank. i want to get to this one part. i have been reading into it a bit here. the investigations are examining stock sales that silicon valley bank financial officers made, which is what you were talking about, jake, just days before the bank failed.
9:10 am
the justice department is investigating any involvement, the department's fraud prosecutors in washington and san francisco can uncover as well. the svb financial chief executive greg becker didn't return a phone message seeking comment. i don't think we are shocked about that, but you can bet they're going to be really, really pushing. they're going after the california lender, taken over by regulators last week amid historic run on deposits, and it is all the same which you were saying, jake, in terms of what they were doing with the money. not months ago necessarily but days and moments before the bank failed. what about bonuses paid running out the door the last few weeks. >> just to make another point, the effect of what the biden administration did, all banks will now take more risk because guess what, you know you're backed up. that's what the moral of the story is. >> i find it ironic the sec is investigating them
