u.s. officials who call the incident violation of international law. welcome to a brand-new hour of "america's newsroom," i'm dana perino. >> bill: second hour starts now, i'm bill hemmer. that incident is first time since the cold war a u.s. aircraft went down after encountering a russ ian aircraf. the white house pins the blame on moscow. >> the message that we delivered to the russian ambassador is they need to be more careful flying in international airspace near u.s. assets that are flying in legal ways conducting missions in support of our national security interest, they need to be more careful. >> bill: senator mike tobin stands by. mike.

>> the u.s. called this incident everything from dangerous to juvenile, it happened yesterday morning 7 a.m. local time. two russian fighter jets, su-27 fighters went to a u.s. drone over the black sea. the pentagon says the fighter jets harassed the drone, buzzing dangerously close to the drone and one fighter dumped fuel on the drone and during one pass the russian fighter struck the propeller of the drone, breaking off a piece. the drone was unmanageable and the decision was made to ditch that aircraft in the black sea. with tengszs high between the u.s. and russia and china, they said this is the kind of thing that could sent nations spiralling toward a broader conflict. >> things bumping into each other and causing collision and

sir, get your reaction to what happened overnight. >> this is another dangerous provocation of russia brought about by president biden's weakness, not just russia, china dangerously buzzing our aircraft, iran downed a drone in the persian gulf and china harasses our aircraft in the mediterranean. president biden needs to make it clear we won't tolerate this provocative action. if we don't put our foot down, and they down an unmanned aircraft, we will invite them to a manned aircraft. what should we do? they should put up another drone today to make it clear we will not be intimidated from flying in the airspace. second, return the u.s. navy to the black sea, president biden got out last year, nato has more

there was imagery collected, a drone can see in the distance and nearby, would you encourage, i would manage, the pentagon to release that if it confirms what our suspicions can be? >> i have no question that russia is responsible for the downing of this drone. this is exactly the kind of thing nations like russia and china and iran do when they think they can get away with it. second, we have every reason to be in the black sea, we have nato allies on the black sea coast, turkey, bulgaria, russia doesn't have allies, they have no reason to be in or near american airspace and as long as we are flying in international airspace in the black sea or in international waters, as we were, we have every right to do so. i worry biden, who is scared of his own shadow when vladamir putin or xi will apologize for this by refusing to fly drones
7:06 am
there. we have been canceling missile tests we had scheduled because they didn't want to be provocative against russia. it is important president biden make it clear we will not be deterred in international waters and international skies, otherwise we are inviting other attacks perhaps against manned aircrafts or vessels. >> dana: this is a 32 million dollar drone, that is not chump change. i wonder how you explain to the american people how support for ukraine and activity in this area is in america's national interest. >> i think most americans recognize aggressive dictators are not saysiated when they can invade an innocent country and seize its territory employed what would be more after ukraine is nato partners.

greatest threat to national security is china and pacific to invade and annex taiwan. it will invite aggression in the future and europe that will expose us to continued commitment in russia or europe to defend our partners there when we should be shifting resources to china. more effort in short term can help ukraine defend toward to force vladamir putin to the negotiating table so ukraine can get satisfactory outcome, create a stable piece in europe and focus on the threat coming from china. >> bill: thank you for your time, senator tom cotton feels we're at beginning of this aspect of the story, we'll see where it goes. thank you. we said it last hour, this unmanned drone, you wonder if russia would flirt with --
