"jesse watters primetime" starts right now. hey, jesse. >> hey, bret. thank you. ♪ ♪ >> jesse: protests are a big part of american history. this country started with a protest. the boston tea party. it sparked the american revolution. peaceful protests are so important that they are protected by the first amendment. women protested for the right to vote. mlk marched on washington with a quarter million people behind him. the civil rights act was past the next year. in the 1960s and 70s college camcampuses were packed with students protesting the vietnam war. some protests were peaceful.

some were violent and some turned deadly. >> william was killed in the confrontation between national guardsmen and students protesting the war in vietnam at kent state university. joe lewis was shot twice that day as was allen both survived and feel it necessary to remember the four who died understanding it could easily have been them it was a tense time troops coming home called baby killers. might be ripped out of a classroom and september to a jungle. they protested civil rights, women's rights, antiwar. these movements changed the course of history. today college kids want to be in the history books too. but they don't know what to protest. segregation is illegal. there is no draft and women have more rights than us sure, there's problems, crime, fentanyl, chinese balloons. but these kids don't care about any of that so they protest words pronouns and isms. lock themselves in a building

for 10 days, why? because they wanted more money for the quote division of institutional equity and insolution. i don't know what that means. i know what make love not war means but not that. at stanford university the diversity dean, yep, that is a thing. teamed up with students to heckle a judge. the judge was an invited guest. why did they heckle him? well, because the judge misgenderred a pedophile who transitioned to a female so he could go to a women's prison and assault more people. >> so you have invited me to speak here and i am being heckled nonstop and i'm just asking for. never actually watched the video and then they repeat in the op-ed. the chancellor of the school as you said repeats it again and then a riot happens and a mob gets extremely violent. the issue here, the core issue is that these college campuses, we know they have become radical and no longer places of free speech but a speaker on american college campus if you want to come and talk about free speech and american values it should not be a danger to fellow students or to the speaker. over 100 police officers were there last night. that mob was there to try to do violence and the chancellor who has a duty to tell the truth and represent the students did the exact opposite. and it's really too bad. it's tragic, jesse, that when you go to a college campus, you have to experience a quasimilitary war zone. this is not just at uc davis. we are seeing it on stanford in a separate way but with that kind of radicalism. i'm glad last night the event went off peacefully. despite all the damage, vandalism and spray painting and

horrors happening in kyiv to our nation's tv screens every night. but ben's work wasn't without sacrifice as he lost a leg on one side and a foot on the other. also losing sight in one eye after a russian missile strike. ben never let that stop him though and refused to surrender to his injuries. the story of ben's recovery will be featured in sacrifice and survival a story from the frontline. the author of "saved" a war reporter's mission to make it home, benjamin hall joins me now. when you hear all that explosive activity that we just led in with, does that freak you out? >> it doesn't. for many years covering wars i thought it might. and talking about 10 years ago i came back from somalia particularly brutal and spent a while having difficulty sleeping. i have since been able to turn that i'd off. when you go to work you put aside your fears and focus on the story. no, i'm lucky i haven't brought that home with me. i'm lucky i don't suffer the ptsd some people do. >> jesse: if you have anything

symptomatic like that gutfeld can give you something. when you were initially hospitalized you kind of came to for a moment. you have talk about this in the book. and you thought you were behind enemy lines. >> the first thing i thought because when the car saved me the last i heard was passed away saying it's the russians. i woke up the next day life-saving operations and i assumed i was in russia. i assumed that the patient lying opposite of me was a russian spy and bed sheets are moving and i thought he had a gun pointed at me. someone was shouting at me holding my state department press card who are you? who are you? my immediate thought we are in russia. i'm in the middle of a spy movie and i have got to escape somehow. i was thinking i can't crawl but i'm going to find a way home somehow. turns out that i was in ukraine. i was saved by americans who came in to get me. there was that first moment i thought well, this has just gotten a lot worse. >> jesse: our friend sarah did a great job coordinating that, also. other people within the

organization. when you are now back stateside and have you sustained some injuries and you hear people debate about ukraine and funding. how does that make you feel? >> yeah, it's an interesting debate at the moment. there is a fair amount of growing talk will that there is a lot of money going to ukraine how long should that continue for. for the people on the ground they think that needs to continue until russia is pushed out of the country. in the journalist i stand in the middle and tell both sides of that story. but, i think putin is waiting for that is he waiting for a few years to pass now. is he waiting for western involvement to cease and then i will take think he will take it another go to take over the entire country. >> jesse: are you ageneral lynn junky. this was not your first rodeo. tell me what inspires you to get out there. >> i like adventures and stories and seeing things other people haven't that's driven me from the beginning of this job. important for the journalist as well. i can't tell you the right story about what is going on in ukraine unless i have seen and been there. when you have told stories from war, it's very hard to find

stories that march up to that you know, so once have you done it a few times. it draws you back. in it can be addictive i have had to do it time and time again. love it but be careful when you are doing it. i have learned how dangerous that can be. >> jesse: i loved your book here it is.
