10:23 am
bipartisan issue i think especially in the senate, you see a lot of senate democrats led by mark warner, chairman leaning on this alleged security threat and they are willing to take some political risks to get something done there. mike: it's not just china that china is concerned about, china, cuba, iran, north korea, russia and venezuela, bipartisan effort to crack down on tech from those six hostile countries. how do you assess that proposal? >> that's a mark warner bill and he's with thoone. there's not a loft apps coming from north korea or cuba. russia has hands full and not getting a lot of tech out of there. it would not ban but it would give the president a much greater degree of authority to
10:24 am
ban. basically allows for the free flow of information from hostile countries. this bill would short circuit that and make it much easier for the president to move on a ban if he wanted to. that would be down the line. it would make it harder for tiktok to defend itself against a ban in federal court. >> tiktok is obviously huge business in terms of wanting to maintain the american marketplace, right, so what are the lobbying efforts on behalf of tiktok like at this point? >> they are extensive and next week it's been reported by us and other outlets that tiktok will be flying influencers from capitol hill. a lot of americans make livelihoods off of this app, that's true and wouldn't it be a shame if you band it and hurt all of these people. there's that effort.
10:25 am
there's more quiet efforts as well. there's been significant effort to staff up with both republican and democratic firms. people do look at a relationship with tiktok. you get in bed with them professionally and you wonder where you go from there in washington. i think it has become a little toxic and so it is one of those things they had a difficult time hiring folks but they are stepping up and doing everything that they can to get in people's ears and say listen, security risk, we understand but at the end of the day this is a popular app, political consequences, certainly economic consequences and maybe you want to rethink this. >> brandon from politico, busy week for you ahead. >> very much so. mike: thanks for starting it here. >> thanks for having me. mike: top american general warning that isis can attack asia after group has been retaining strength under taliban rule.
