hysterical to me. >> so i can't be a libertarian now? >> he's running for president and good singer, check out his music. "run joe run." >> is this a florida thing? >> it might be a florida thing. here is "america reports." >> john: kayleigh, thank you so much. house will debate a gop bill to give parents more rights inside their children's classrooms. democrats argue it would only pit parents against educators and some parental groups are upset the bill was created for us without us. >> sandra: what will it take for the parents bill of rights act to get bipartisan support and make it all the way to the president's desk? douglas murray and parental rights activist ian pryor, both here to weigh in. >> tiktok has repeatedly chosen

a path for more control, more surveillance, and more manipulation. your preliminary should be banned. >> i disagree with the characterization of surveillance. we don't sell data to any data brokers. >> you don't sell to anyone. >> don't sell to data brokers. >> you have used the word transparency over a half dozen times in your opening testimony. bytedance, the parent company has gone out of their way to hide an air brushed corporate structure ties to the ccp. >> john: a firing hearing on capitol hill as house lawmakers press tiktok ceo whether the app is a national security threat capable of exposing the data of 150 million active u.s. users to the chinese government. john roberts in government. this is "america reports." revved up, ready to go. >> ready to go. we have been watching throughout the morning. a lot of fiery and important exchanges happening on capitol hill today. i'm sandra smith in new york.
10:02 am
we are monitoring all of it, and that hearing comes as congress weighs this potential nationwide ban on the popular app tiktok amid concerns that it is used to harvest american's information and harm our children online. ceo was trying to reassure lawmakers and the public that tiktok is not an agent of the chinese communist party, but critics are not convinced. >> john: the senate intelligence committee chairman senator mark warner has been vocal in his opposition to tiktok and co-sponsoring a bill to address the ongoing threat from technology from all foreign adversaries. he will join us with new reaction in just a moment. >> sandra: begin our conference with aishah hasnie live on the hill for us. quite a day so far, aishah. >> hello to both of you, john and sandra. that is right. you know, this committee and chew are not seeing eye-to-eye on really anything at all.

many members, in fact, do not trust a word that is coming out of his mouth, and that point was made abundantly clear in realtime during this hearing in a really stunning display when representative showed a tiktok video to members, showing a gun with a threatening message about today's hearing. she claims it violates tiktok's policy but it's been up on tiktok for some 41 days. listen. >> you expect us to believe that you are capable of maintaining the data security privacy and security of 150 million americans where you can't even protect the people in this room? >> can i respond? chair? >> no, we are going to move on. >> that video was taken down shortly after chew was told members that his aides acknowledged the video was taking down. now he came to this hearing guys

to sell lawmakers on tiktok's plan to protect u.s. security by giving texas-based company oracle control over the data of tiktok's american users. the company would then report to an independent american board but committee members were not hearing it, they don't like the fact that china's bytedance would continue to open the app. republicans and democrats frustrated with chew's answers. >> a lot of your answers are a bit nebulous, they are not yes or no. is there a corporation that has any authority above tiktok? >> tiktok is a subsidiary of bytedance, founded by a chinese founder. >> is it a chinese company? >> i frequently have this discussion with others on what is a company that is now global. >> that's ok, i prefer you answer the question and stop dancing verbally on it. >> with more than 50 members of this committee we are expecting

10:06 am
states. >> john: do you agree, senator, that tiktok is a weapon and that the only way to stop it is with a data privacy bill? >> well, john, i think we need a data privacy bill for protecting all americans' privacy, not just from tiktok but frankly from some of the american platforms. but there is something fundamentally different when you are talking about a chinese-controlled company. chinese law passed in 2017 requires every chinese company, bytedance that owns tiktok, that at any point turn over to the communist party of china data or anything else they want. now, i got problems with facebook or twitter or google, but it is definitely different when you are talking about a chinese company that ultimately has to answer to the communist party. and there's two-fold problem here. 1, 150 million americans data harvest, tiktok is addictive, learns a lot about you, i don't want that residing as a tool for
10:07 am
the communist party. and also the videos can be manipulated in terms of the content. and people say what about all the people who are social influencers, a lot of creative stuff on tiktok. i think the market will provide another alternative. a company that comes out of china, russia, iran, north korea, ought to be a higher level of scrutiny. >> john: senator, i was struck by the bipartisan tone the members took in this hearing today. they were pretty much unified in their condemnation of what tiktok could be doing. but congressman bowman of new york seems to be at odds with members of his own party as well. listen to what he said about tiktok. >> republicans in particular have been sounding the alarm, creating a red scare around china. let's not be racist towards china and express our xenophobia
10:08 am
when it comes to tiktok. >> john: senator, i'm not asking you here to criticize a colleague, but what the heck? >> well, first of all, you know, one of the things i always make clear is my beef is with the communist party of china. my beef is with xi jinping, the communist party leader who treats his own people awful, what he does to the uyghur people and the people of hong kong. it's not about the chinese americans, but to deny the regime and their record is not based on a factual analysis. and what our bill does, it's more than just john thune and i, we actually have 20 senators, ten democrats, ten republicans, it's tough to get 20 senators to agree on anything these days and we have a number more i think will pick up after the hearing and our approach is let's have a rules-based approach and it will require as well the intelligence community to declassify as much
10:09 am
information as possible to make sure we can show, not just trust the government but show the reasons why because it's tiktok today, a few years back it was another, but we need not only the current issue at hand but think about the chinese communist party controlled artificial intelligence or quantum computing or synthetic biology. we need a tool on going forward, not the whack a mole, one-off approach so far. >> john: to the point congressman bowman was making, do you believe there is xenophobia or racist about tiktok? >> absolutely not. it's clear the beef is with the communist party or xi jinping, it's not the people. anyone who denies the government, how they treat their own people, how they are frankly
10:10 am
do not even allow any of the -- many of the american preliminary companies to even operate in china, and one of the key, one of the most damning comments comes from the communist party leadership that said they would rather turn off tiktok in america than give up the source code which is kind of the secret sauce around the algorithm that makes tiktok so addictive. if they are not saying they could use the source code, if tiktok was divested, why wouldn't they allow it to reside in america or another country. >> john: they are wholly opposed to selling the thing, no question about that. we will follow the progress. appreciate it. that was a fiery hearing today, sandra. and again, it was kind of like the old days in congress, both sides were getting along, they were concerned about a common threat. it was incredible to watch. >> sandra: i heard you note that in realtime this morning, john. and remarkable moment when he was pressed about whether or not tiktok is selling any of this
10:11 am
data. to respond with we are not selling the data to any data brokers. are you selling to any one at all? no, we are not selling to data brokers. well, who are they selling the data to. a big moment. >> sandra: and when a congresswoman dyed in the wool liberal from california asked about data going to china, he says no, no data is going to china, i haven't had any contact with them, and she said i find that to be preposterous. it really was an extraordinary hearing today. >> sandra: it was, and we'll have more on this with senator ted cruz, he has been all about this from go. he'll join us live top of the next hour and the fcc commissioner, brendan carr will join us, the american public has a close eye what's happening on the hill but bigger picture, how is it influence america's youth. a huge, huge concern of parents

out there. >> john: this parent does not let his children watch it at all, although my son was using a chinese app for editing. >> sandra: more delays in the hush money hearing of president trump, the panel will not deliberate or vote on charges against the former president. all this as that manhattan district attorney, alvin bragg is firing back at house republicans for their quest to obtain information on his probe. national correspondent bryan is live outside the criminal courthouse. >> good afternoon, manhattan district attorney alvin bragg's office is making it clear he is not going to hand over documents or testify to the republican led house judiciary committee but are willing to sit down with

committee staff to see what, if any information can be shared with the house judiciary committee. in a letter to republican committee chair jim jordan, bragg's general counsel called the request unconstitutional and unlawful incursion into new york sovereignty. bragg's office called jordan's allegation that the investigation is politically motivated unfounded. bragg's office accused jordan of launching his own political witch hunt, the letter only came after donald trump created a false expectation that he would be arrested the next day and his lawyers reportedly urged you to intervene. this comes after jordan sent new letters yesterday demanding documents and congressional testimony from former special prosecutors, both publicly resigned from bragg's office last year after bragg refused to move forward with prosecuting trump over financial crimes. jordan says the two former prosecutors have information

broad pushback from democrats working in tandem with the nation's largest teachers' unions to sink the legislation. douglas murray, great to have you here, douglas. this is something everybody cares about, right. we all want the best for our children in this country and for our families, and this is basically what's in this parental bill of rights act and what the school districts would have to do as a result. they have to post the curriculum as we just mentioned, publicly, they have to provide a list of books that are at the school, sounds reasonable, you can tell me. give parents access to the budget information, which -- they want everybody accessible to the parents. allow parents to speak at school board meetings. what about this would democrats oppose? >> it seems wildly uncontroversial, doesn't it, and all of this is just about transparency. obviously it's a republican -- i think very intelligent republican response to something that happened in 2020.

which was during the lockdown, many american parents discovered for the first time some of the things their children were being taught. home learning surprised a lot of american parents with some of the details, some of the technical stuff coming out on history, on gender ideology, on race, a whole pile of things. parents became rightly i think animated in this country after 2020. there were certain places where it was a real hot point, loudoun county, and virginia the governor's race, and not just important for the parents' point of view but politically speaking. it's a popular issue. the democrats will try to find a way to push this back. you don't want to look like you are against transparency, you don't want to look like you are against parents' rights. >> sandra: hold on, douglas, i'm going to play out a bunch of

truth about america's history. so, they say for republicans it's just about banning those books. >> that tells you something, doesn't it. just right there, the truth about america's history. we all know what's going on in that statement. it's -- there has been in recent years, i've written about this at length, been in recent years deliberate effort from the teaching unions upwards or downwards, to try to make sure that the story of america is rewritten in america's schools. you hear this constantly from democrats. say things like the republicans are trying to stop the history of slavery being taught or all sorts of unpleasant things, no. nobody is actually campaigning. what people are campaigning for is a rounded view of american history. you might say 100 years ago only one side of the american story possibly. in 2020 onwards, only one side of the american history and that's the negative side. when people say no, it's just about getting taught in the right context, actually very
10:25 am
often it's just in the democrat's view and in democrat lobbying organizations and teaching unions, left wing teaching union view. their idea of how american history should be taught and that's the point, the thing of involving parents and the education of their children. most american parents want a rounded view of american history to be taught and nobody on the right is not saying that's not white washing american history but not just about teaching negative stories either. and that's what a lot of the left and the democrats want, and i'm pleased there's a pushback against this. it's high time there was. the democrats want to pretend it's a culture war. it's a culture war they started. >> sandra: and by pushback, but not letting parents know what's happening in the classroom. do you think it makes it to the president's desk? >> i think it will find intense opposition and the president and others will find a way to pretend it is something it isn't. >> sandra: very interesting. great to have you on set in new york. >> great to be back. >> john: the ceo of tiktok

>> sandra: the husband of murdered microsoft executive jared bridegan's first wife making his first court appearance today in miami. mario fernandez saldana is accused of hiring a hit man to kill bridegan. the question for many is whether the ex-wife will also be charged. phil holloway joins us now. phil, this is a story that has taken many twists and turns. set up the relation, what was ongoing at the time of his murder and sort of the fight in court that the soon to be husband and ex-wife were going through at the time this

happened. >> yeah, there was lots of courtroom battles between these two with respect to the kids and all the standard things we sometimes see when people separate. this is a textbook example of how a conspiracy prosecution can unfold. and let's take a look at a conspiracy. conspiracy is simply an agreement by two or more people to commit a crime. so what they do is they look to see who committed the crime, in this case the murder, they made their arrest, and then they work outward because in a conspiracy, sandra, the acts of one are said to be the acts of all. so what they do, they work backwards, they look at what is the relationship here and they found the common denominator, that being the ex-wife and the troubles that the victim had with her after their divorce. so this led them to the current husband who of course was the landlord of the now convicted killer because he confessed. when they charged him with not only murder, but conspiracy, sandra, that was our signal that
10:54 am
this was a bigger crime than just one person. and so now the question is, how many people are involved in this conspiracy. i would be very surprised, frankly, if they were not looking to the ex-wife because remember, all they have to do is prove the agreement. they don't have to prove that she did much, but that she was part of this agreement. and if they can lean on the husband who is now in custody, the way they leaned on the shooter, they are going to try to get him to tell them whether or not there were any other people, whether it was her or anybody else, but they said the investigation is ongoing and i believe that's the direction that they are looking. >> sandra: and there's a lot of really vague details so far, even though a lot has been investigated in this case. bridegan and his ex-wife as you mentioned, they had this bitter and ongoing court battle that was happening at the time of his death, and it's been 13 months ago now since he stopped his car to move a tire that was blocking

the road at the time. this is an open investigation and additional details have yet to be learn ed, including the motive. they have not released that yet, right, phil? >> i have not heard an official statement on the motive but implied in all of this, the problems the deceased victim had with his ex-wife because as we know when people get married, then sometimes the issues that they are dealing with bleed over into the personal relationship and this case with her new husband, her current husband who is now in custody. so that is the direction that they are looking. you know, there's really no other common denominator here, nothing else that links the current husband to the deceased victim and the shooter other than the ex-wife. so if you read between the lines, you have to believe that the relationship with the diseased victim and his ex-wife
