i'm john roberts. the risky business of human smuggling is reaching far beyond towns along the border. numerous interceptions of smugglers with migrants shoveled into vehicles to get into america. it doesn't always end in a bust or in the migrants getting through. dramatic scene in houston. f.b.i. agents rescue migrants kidnapped for ransom. >> two hostages were safely rescued by the f.b.i. and no agents were injured. >> dana: we're live in mission, texas with more on that kidnapping horror. hi. >> hi. that was a tense situation there in houston. you could see that those migrants were kidnapped after they crossed into the united states illegally according to authorities and held inside that motel in houston, beaten badly and held for ransom and told if they didn't pay they wouldn't get out.

the f.b.i. went in in houston, texas, a tense stand-off situation that went on for a few hours. they rescued them coming three days after investigators say the migrants were kidnapped while driving near houston, texas. officials say the migrants were being held hostage and beaten and sent videos to their families demanding they pay up. two migrants made it out okay. gunfire broke out during the rescue. >> agents with the f.b.i.'s hostage rescue team from virginia were conducting a hostage rescue when a shooting occurred. one suspect was shot and killed and a second suspect was taken into custody by the harris county sheriff's department. >> this all comes as smuggling across the country continues day-by-day here. the video shared by texas dps shows five migrants hidden in the back of a truck in oklahoma. you can see people run out and smuggler is taken into custody.

the smugglers do this because they get so much money from the cartel. another trend to keep an eye on here is the large surge in the number of chinese nationals crossing from mexico just in the last 24 hours, our cameras captured this group. you can see them. the chinese nationals processed in south texas. agents tell us there have been nearly 2,000 chinese nationals and counting just so far this fiscal year. that puts a strain on border patrol resources already running thin. back out here live in mission, texas we are reaching out for more updates with the f.b.i. case in houston. no sign of things slowing down here smuggling-wise at the southern border. >> dana: great to have you down there. thank you. >> you need to seek our permission to have a different identity. these straight white men are taking freedom away from us. >> dana: iowa has two new laws restricting bathrooms and

changing rooms minors can use in school and banning gender transition medical procedures for anyone under 18 including more money blockers and surgery. kim reynolds say it is in the best interest of the kids. glad to have you here. nice to meet you. you tell us, what did you want to try the accomplish with this legislation? >> first of all, these are irreversible therapies and surgeries and science isn't conclusive on the results let alone the side effects. the fda has not approved hormone blockers for gender dysphoria. we need to pump the brakes. there is no long-term data on it. some of our -- sweden has the most data and they are going in the opposite direction. even president obama when they were asked to have medicare cover the surgeries he said in 2016 the science is inconclusive. so these -- the kids don't get a

redo. i think it's really important that we take a look at these emerging therapies and look at scientific long-term data before we rush into making these decisions. i'm proud to say i don't govern by polls. the iowa poll surveyed iowa parents and agreed with protecting children and minors from this inconclusive science. >> dana: i imagine that you answer to your constituents. the aclu had this to say. this is not the first time the government has abused its power at the expense of a small group of people but in this case the target is children. that is shameful and cruel. how do you respond to them? >> the first thing i reminded everybody these are the same individuals screaming at me two years ago during covid when i tried to get the kids back in the classroom and actually did get our kids back in the classroom. we were one of the first states in the country to get kids in school and telling me the science supported keeping the kids out of school and science

supported masking our children. two years later we're discovering that was not accurate. it was inconclusive science. so the same people that are throwing the same science argument at me right now, it is not there. there isn't any long-term data and no data that supports the efficacy of it. these are about our kids. let's just pause and make sure we are doing the right thing on behalf of our children. >> dana: the "washington post" writer who said that iowa is now the florida of the north. she does not mean it as a compliment. republicans in the iowa legislature empowered by the state's recent red wave embarked on a new agenda that is a school choice bill and legislation targeting the lgbtq community. iowa is becoming the florida of the north without the beaches. how do you respond to that? >> i'm proud of what we're doing. i won re-election by 20 points.

we flipped two statewide offices. >> dana: isn't your economy growing? >> things are happening. cutting taxes, reducing the size of government. giving parents a choice in their child's education. two years we tried to get it through the legislature. i got it through the senate only to have it stopped in the house and i made that a central issue running during this campaign and we won significantly. we have a super majority in the senate and house and we were able to get school choice across the finish line within the first two weeks of the legislative session. parents do support the opportunity to decide what the best environment is for their child. it shouldn't just be for families with the resources to do that. >> dana: let's look at a map of all the states with school choice laws and you led the pack. a lot of these other states followed in your footsteps and now starting to do it on taxes as well. i've been watching your career with great interest. the iowa polling on school

choice approval. more than six in ten people oppose the law. i don't know if that's. >> they've been told for years that school choice was going to kill the public school system and it is not. it is not. there is no data to support that. there is no data in arizona or florida. and we're about to dispel that same hysteria. that's all they have left. it is not true. >> dana: are you seeing results for students? some of the school districts across the country, rural and urban, the kids cannot read or write at grade level. have you had had better results. >> we have had a little better results. we kept our kids in the classroom. kids that kept their kids out of the classroom for 2 1/2 years saw numbers drop and ours went up. it is still not where it needs to be. not a 0 sum gain. this will elevate all of education. i went and my daughters went to public schools.

few years ago. they had success rates. what happened is people are arrested and turned back on the street without any kind of program to teach them a different way of life. until we patch up that gap i think crime in america that we're seeing now will continue. >> dana: they learn a new skill but get counseling and physical health back in order. kudos to them. i appreciate them letting me come to visit. >> john: careers in skilled trades continue to decline despite an abundance of job openings and strong pay. why is supply not meeting demand? growing outrage among parents as the ceo of tiktok brushes off concerns about children being exposed to dangerous content on the app. >> parents will have to make that decision ultimately. i would not allow my kids to have access to tiktok without any question. arking spaces so people think they're open. surprise. >> john: parents who say tiktok drove their son to suicide confronting the company's ceo yesterday on capitol hill. the cover of today's "new york post" says it all. tiktok's toll. aishah hosni is on capitol hill with more on this aspect. aishah. >> good morning, john. this was a very emotional day for so many parents who were in the room watching and also at home watching. the parents of chase tell fox that they were not happy with chew's testimony. they say that they found that he was dodging questions left and right. as you see there, they were incredibly emotional during that hearing. their 16-year-old son committed suicide after spending hours watching psychological disturbing videos on tiktok. they reportedly began crying when his story was brought up during this hearing.

opt out of wearing special jerseys on pride night. the decision in response to security concerns for the team's russian players. molly line is looking into the story in boston. what's it all about? >> you pretty much clarified what we're looking at. the chicago blackhawks decided not to wear these pride-themed warm-up jerseys on pride night this sunday. they planned to do so. the decision management made. as you mentioned due to security concerns specifically for the players that have russian ties because of a new russian law which severely restricts the promotion of lgtbq rights in the country. some slammed the blackhawks saying another team is ditching rainbow jerseys for pride night. blackhawk's decision is a disgrace. the pride event is a go.
