2:01 am
explaining quote to protect your life and take cover. now a former mayor of rolling fork also described the tornado hitting his home, telling a local television station at the tornado blew the windows out of the back of his house and the sharkey county sheriff's office reporting several gas leaks and people still trapped in piles of rubble. mississippi governor tate reeves saying in a twitter post that search and rescue teams are active right now, and that more ambulances and emergency assets are also being sent to help those who have been affected. the governor also saying quote many in the mississippi delta need your prayers and god's protection. and this storm is not over yet. let's go now to fox weather meteorologist jane men are for the very latest on the track of the storm. jane hello, marianne . yeah definitely. just a devastating night. we saw these storms really start to fire up once the sun went down and tracked across mississippi, where we saw the worst of the damage this very strong tornado coming through. rolling fork and then continued up across interstate 55, where you can
2:02 am
see all the number of tornado reports that continued into those overnight hours. excuse me, so we are going to continue to track the storms as we go through the morning hours. here we are, as we go into alabama is the same storm system. really brought in some tornado reports across the northern tier of the state, but it's mississippi that fared the worst with the really most devastating outbreak that we had seen out of this one super cell that tracked over 80 miles . so here's a look at the number of storm reports that we saw overnight outside of the tornado threat. we had damaging wind gusts that went across tennessee, northern alabama, and then we are tracking that line of storms into north georgia this morning. current look at that radar. we still have a few severe thunderstorm warnings to track into the eastern portions of the appalachians. strong line of storms racing into the atlanta metro this morning. nothing severe. within this line. we will likely track some gusty winds. now this is just the beginning of the day. we still have saturday and even into the day tomorrow to get through with this storm system as it continues to slowly push its
2:03 am
way eastward with the severe thunderstorm warnings. we are tracking some gusty winds and the potential for some hail and heavy rain, but the atlanta metro area needs to wake up this morning and be on alert as the storms come through in the next couple of hours. this is the severe thunderstorm threat that we watch for the day today that threat really expanding across georgia and into south carolina northern portions of florida that line is expected to slowly sag through the region will tap back into instability, the threat for damaging winds and that isolated tornado still expected to exist into those afternoon hours. here's the day on sunday , so things start to reinvigorate once again as we go into the end of the week. and we can't let our guard down and extends back into mississippi jackson. this is the area that was hit last night so devastatingly and this is expected to open up as we go through the day on sunday as the thunderstorms start to roll in once again through the afternoon and evening. the threat for damaging winds a possibility as well as that isolated tornado. we're working to continue to get coverage across the devastating damage

in mississippi in the overnight hours. we're going to be live on fox weather this morning. make sure you tune in with us, but we are eating that imagery as it comes into us this morning, national weather service survey teams will be going out. well, jane, it would be so devastating of those same areas get hit again. i mean, so people really do need to stay. stay vigilant right now. thank you. jane manar, fox weather meteorologist. we're going to go ahead and go to storm chaser . erin rigsby. we've got him on the phone to talk about what he saw during tonight's storms. hi, erin. hi there. how are you doing tonight? good can you? can you tell us what you saw tonight when this outbreak started. yeah absolutely. this is one of those cases where this storm kind of went from looking, you know, not too great. it was very disorganized for a long time. and it accelerated, you know, from 0 to 100 in no time it went from , you know, kind of a small cylinder cones, tornado and within just a few lightning
2:05 am
flashes that quickly grew into a quarter mile wide tornado where they ended up crossing at pretty close range in front of me right before and fortunately , insert the this town that we actually had to rescue and erin. what town were you in? that was in the town of rolling fork, mississippi. i literally arrived there. seconds after the tornado had hit. it was still pouring rain. there was lightning everywhere. there was still thunder, and there was just a constant rain of people yelling for help, so i quickly went to the nearest one that i could where i went to one home, and i found a lady that had been crafting her living room. it looked like she had gotten knocked over trying to get to cover. and we were able to take a lot of that debris off of her and free her and get a medical attention. there were able to get her on the stretcher and get out of the demolished poems. and then we went to the home just across the street, which was even more severely damaged than her house and her entire house had collapsed on her, but the couch that humans by had propped up the debris,
2:06 am
and she was able to get out on inter. very the pain saws to cut a bunch of the debris out of the way we ever set her free and he was able to give her her family a big hug this evening with wow. that is that is heartwarming that so many people did make it out that there's so many survivors, but we are unfortunately confirming now that at least 14 people are now confirmed dead and aaron amazing that you were trying to help get people out of their homes. what did they say to you ? um you know, right after this happened a lot of them were in a state of shock. that first lady that we came across he was, you know her her priority. she was really cold and wet because the roof was completely missing. so it was just pouring rain down on her, so we were able to go into one of her. the other rooms that were undamaged and we got a bunch of blankets and we were able to cover her up and keep her warm. that was her big priority, and he had just recently had surgery. so
2:07 am
we were carefully trying to aid with her because she was complaining about an ankle injury and a lot of the other people that we came up to for just very great. well, they this this town is in a very rural area of mississippi to the response time was a lot longer than usual. we were there for probably 30 to 45 minutes before we even saw ambulances starting to trickle in there. really the only people were there were locals that were uninjured, and a few local deputies has happened to be in the area at the time. they were just grateful to see someone talking to them. and you know, coaching them through it and getting their nerves on the down, you know, to reevaluate the situation to let them know that they were clear storms and then another family had come up out of the house, and i was able to hold on to their little but he was about eight years old, and i carried her. you know, down from the debris while her family was able to walk down and i was able to get into shelter as well. so people were just incredibly grateful. and i think they were just very happy to see someone helping them right away because the response
2:08 am
time was so significant. and people who were injured. i had heard that there was not a hospital available close. can you tell us about that? and did you have to transport anyone yourself to try and get help? that is correct. the nearest one i believe was vicksburg. there could be something a little bit closer that i didn't know about. but i saw a very large response of ambulances and police officers coming out of the city of vicksburg, which is about 45 miles south of this town. um i ate it and, you know, kind of just keeping people try. i was able to get them to my car. get them out of the rain, as many as i could. i did not have to transport anybody because i was part of something over all hard at work trying to unburied that you know the uninterested we could find people trapped in their homes by honestly definitely have a whole lot of time. but there are other there were other goods merit in in the town, using their trucks and pieces of debris like wood to use as a back rest for people
2:09 am
that had neck and back injuries, and they were being transported to nearby towns. i believe in vicksburg, i was actually behind one there was a gentleman holding one of the people in the back of the truck as they were. holy transporting them to fix book. i just said it really sounds like it's just really a group effort. everyone that's on the ground is having to help. and of course, all of this happened at night. i mean the worst possible time for a storm to hit especially dangerous storm like this one. a lot of people cut off guard. absolutely to my knowledge. i don't even think that the tornado sirens went off in their town. a lot of the multiple honda became across. you could tell that people do something was coming because they could hear it. but they didn't get to their shelter. in time. we found multiple people , especially in their living rooms or the central most part of the house, which is a good thing, but this tornado caught a lot of people off absolutely off guard. i think it's just developed so rapidly because it's not like i said it started out just kind of like a small cylinder cone tornado and rapidly expanded into this huge
