rachel: good morning we go straight to a fox weather alert. a desperate search for sush vivers in mississippi. a tornado levers 14 people dead and one monster twister believed to be a mile wide carving a path of destruction over 100 miles. will: small town of rolling fork hit before 9:00 p.m. and toppling homes and downing power lines and trees and leveling communities. it sparked multiple explosions. a second twister touching down in the city of amarie. that's where the damage is apparently extensive. this map shows how many mississippi delta communities were hit. pete: there's the path there. the system was triggering flood warnings for millions and

100,000 people are without power at least this morning. let's go straight to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth tracking the story. rick: yeah, we got this after sunset last night and haven't had any sun yet. we have a lot of images as the sun comes up but it's been a long and scary night dealing with all of this with the power out and without any sunrise and all the service connected and have rescue operation is very difficult. this is a look at the line of storms that moved through the first town hit by the tornado and likely the tornado on the ground all the way through and up through the first point was after 9:00 in rolling fork and then stayed on the ground and hit a number of communities likely 80-100 miles long in the path and today they'll get out and survey if the tornado was on the ground the entire time to see how wide it was and at what points and such. at the mediate, it's about service connected and have rescue efforts and get an idea of the cell moving through and today the energy is much lower and less of a threat of severe

weather today that will help certainly all the people without power. today you've got good weather behind the storm and severe weather moves further off towards the east and tomorrow a rainy day and threats for the south and we've been in an active severe weather pattern this year, guys. normally severe weather season peaks up in may and we've had above average activity so far and another threat coming probably a significant threat this coming week. rachel: was there a lot of warning before this? rick: this was well advertised and we neighed was going to be active and the tornado in rolling fork had six minutes of warning from the first -- the beginning of the cell rotating about six minutes the time that it was warned and it hit town. i will tell you the cell was moving at about 65 miles an hour. imagine the winds of a tornado but the forward motion of that tornado at about the speed you would do on the interstate and it moving so fast gives very
3:05 am
little time for people to react. pete: rick, a mile wide. how common is that? rick: it's one of the big ones that could be a mile, mile and a half wide, when it happen this is is the kind of destruction you often see with it. you like when tornadoes happen and get ef1s that just drop down for a bit of time but a mile wide can happen and this looks to be one of them. will: early images from last night in rolling fork, mississippi, of what kind of damage we've begun to see. let's bring in jose watson and he's a mississippi highway patrol and we have him with us this morning. jose, thank you for your time. this hit around 9:00 p.m. last night in the darkness. have you and the mississippi highway patrol been yet to survey the damage? >> we haven't had any daylight yet and staid out till about
3:06 am
1:00 this morning our time and called off everything at that time to try and make as in acespedesments -- assessments as we could and do a lot of search and rescue and waiting financial on the sunlight to come up and give us better light to get out there and get back at it and try to find if there's any other signs of life in the rubble out there in the morning. pete: jose, the structures, i know it's a wide swath of area but is this an area that expects a lot of tornadoes and therefore the homes are prepared or what kind of wreckage are we looking at here? >> well, to say this is mississippi and mississippi delta so it's flat land. any time weather comes in like this, you always expect the worse. we plan for it. the housing in the area are not equipped or withstand winds and a lot of areas are wooden homes or trailer houses and have some brick structures in the area, but they're not able to withstand the tough wind we had on the tornadoes of last night.
3:07 am
rick: jose you posted on facebook right away saying don't come here. if you're thinking of coming here and getting on the roads and coming here, don't do it because the roads aren't passable. after nine hours into this, are the roads clear so you can get in the people that you need for search and rescue efforts? >> your main highways and main thorouthorofares in the area arr except for maybe one highway -- thorofares in the rare are clear except one area with power lines down and trees down and a lot of power line poles down even as we speak. crews were out last night. there's still some crews out this morning and some still in route to us here in a rolling fork and silver city and across the delta to get these -- i'm broadcasting to you this morning because we don't have power here and we're trying to -- this is

why it's so important for us to have the sunlight first thing in the morning so we can continue our search and rescue efforts. rick: jose, we'll be thinking about you today. best of luck. it's going to be a very rough couple hours i think for people. the emotional toll when you see the sun come up at that first time and get a view of what this is for people, it is -- every time i see it it is so devastating for people. you have a lot of work to do and emotional work to do throughout the day for the people of your community so best of luck to you with that. >> thank you so much. rick: go to fox weather and download the fox weather app. if you haven't, i will tell you fox weather is doing such an amazing job and stream live weather broadcasting and they're covering this story like nobody is and there's reporters on the field watching this. download the fox weather app and get on any of your connected tv devices doing an amazing job there. rachel: that's important for the residents and so many persons that volunteer and they need to know what's going on as well. thank you, rick.

pete: another fox news alert. more u.s. forces hurt in another attack by iranian-backed forces on a u.s. base in eastern syria. will: the missile attack coming after president biden ordered retaliatory strikes after iranian-made come kansas city chiefs situation drone was issued. reporter: good morning. a senior u.s. official tells fox news that some of those injuries may be serious. that official added this was caused bay rocket attack in another attack involving multiple iranian drones on two u.s. bases. this came just hours after president biden had ordered the u.s. central command to carry out precision strikes on groups affiliated with the islamic revolutionary national guard corp. and it killed one u.s. contractor and injured five service members -- sorry, kill

add u.s. contractor and injured five service members and additional contractor as well. here's what the president said yesterday. >> to make no mistake, the united states does not, does not emphasize or seek conflict with iran, but be prepared for us to act forcefully to protect our people. reporter: fox news learn that had at the time of thursday's deadly attack was carried out, the main air defense system at the coalition base was not working. >> why wasn't there a contingency to shoot down the drone if it was coming into the base? >> look, we take a variety of measures to safeguard our people but again, it's an inherently dangerous place and we'll look into the details of the actual attack. reporter: pentagon still looking into the latest forces and said we have the capabilities to respond if our centers and forces in syria are targeted and this is not the first time that iiranian forces have targeted

u.s. bases and that's happened 78 times since january of 2021. guys. will: thank you, alexandria. rachel: thank you. pete: 78 atta attacks on u.s. fs by iranian forces. that's a staggering number. let's break this down just a bit what's happening in the region in syria. we first learned of that it's a cam kansas city chiefs situatioe drones are meant to destroy individuals with flights. this is thursday where the initial attack happened and killed one american contractor and injured five troops as well. there was an american retaliation and two separate missile strikes that were in eastern syria. dare azore and a bombing.
3:12 am
it happened near the el ahmar oil field in syria. our base is near the largest oil field in syria and it's interesting to note. after we retaliated and killed up to nine iranian and these are the guard corp. and they're exporting terrorist organization and the regime uses to try and destabilize other countries and take on americans and it's a specialized force that's in syria. they then shot with ten rockets fired at main base in syria and reports of inj injuries and we t know how many. reminder of neighborhood. you've got israel here and iraq where we took out the isis califit and then you've got syria and iran here. we're there and the pentagon said our 900 troops are there to
3:13 am
fight isis and make sure they don't come back. isis and iran are definitely not friends. isis is a sudi militant group and they're not friends and iran sees this as a opportunity to attack americans. if americans are in the region, death to america and iran will find a way to attack with kamikaze drones and missiles. this base here, we'll get more information on the size but air defense assets were not operable at that moment meaning the ability to shoot down a kamikaze drone didn't either exist or it did exist and wasn't working. the question is did the iranians happen to know that or fortuitous from their perspective. rachel: a lot of americans are waking up going i didn't know we had 900 troops in syria and we put our young men and women in danger and don't have an air defense field to protect them or it's down or maybe the iranians have figured out it's down and they're doing that.
3:14 am
that's troubling. on 78 attacks. pete: these are direct attacks and it's not a proxy war situation here. this is american troops and iranian forces. these are direct attacks to your point. rachel: explain one thing. the iranians are trying to attack americans as you said here in syria, but we're trying to as general says lick their boots to get them to the negotiating table through the russians. pete: through the russians. rachel: i'm so confused and the russians we're fighting in yule crane. pete: and iran is supplying russia with the same kamikaze drones. will: tell me about the iranian guard corp.. are they iranian soldiers or affiliated or funded? how direct are these combatants? pete: they're meant to deploy

3:16 am
austin believe that had they would because as you pointed out, pete, within hours, iran fired off seven more rockets and more injuries to u.s. forces. compare the same situation three years ago when a u.s. contractor was killed. a proportionate response sending the right message was we decided to take out the head of the iranian terror network and the message was clear, today soleimani and tomorrow it's supreme leader. pete: yeah, under the trump administration we're going to drop a bomb on soleimani, their biggest dude and sent shock waves throughout iran and put them on their heels and now it's titt for tat and on or off bases and i don't know how many bases
3:17 am
we have and i don't think that's public knowledge how big they are and how capable the forces are. rachel: have we been in a proxy war and we've been fighting isis and it's been reconstituted since biden has been in office. there's been a lot of congressmen warning us about that. is this a war that, you know, exists. what is going on in syria? pete: this is kind of a typical aspect of post-9/11 counter terrorism and post land w wars d we fought these land wars and thought we were changing haven for democracy and now it's smaller footprint with smaller operators and drones. rachel: is it to take out terror cells or asad? pete: not at this point. the pentagon's line is this is to prevent isis and a back burner approach but we'll see.
