4:01 am
reporter: yeah good morning, from rolling fork, mississippi here in the mississippi delta not too far from the mississippi river, and guys, i just, you know, a picture sometimes speaks thousand words. and this is, this is about as bad as it gets in aftermath of a tornado preliminary ef4 rating look at this what i'm stangtding on this debris and this is -- an oil cabin essentially and you hear it and can you imagine something this heavy being tossed around. and the projectiles like this here, this board with the nails, 166 miles per hour winds this tornado created. and you imagine items like flying through the air all over and this is what we're seeing on street after street here in this neighborhood in rolling fork. aluminum twisted look at this vehicle behind me on top of this

pile. and then underneath all of these cinder blocks there are other vehicles that have been crushed and ripped apart and pounded down by the furry and energy of this incredible tornado this ef4 according to the national weather service. unfortunately 25 dead in this state of mississippi. one in alabama, federal aid we're told is on the way. federal officials will be on the ground. the governor of mississippi toured this town yesterday. he will continue to update. in the meantime, we are here talking to the survivors. the people that went through this hell let's listen to what one woman told me yesterday also a superintendent of one of the schools in this area. >> by time we got over, he was on top -- >> a lot of stuff everywhere.
4:03 am
yep. everything you worked for is gone. like my life -- >> it is very overwhelming to see what's going on. a lot of damage was done. right now the town doesn't have power or water so that's a big concern for us. >> and this same thing here right now in rolling fork. there is no power. there's no water. there's no utilities, this town of under 2,000 people wipe out mostly. there are some structures that are standing brick structures, others that are collapsed and it is just the sounds of pickup when the sun comes up underneath these stars right now, and you can see the stars because it is so dark here. and eerie but this is one of the poorest regions in all of america. they need help right now. these people are in dire

situations this survivors, and those that lost their lives, the families and the friends are mourning this situation. as severe weather has continued to come through this region, every single week, since christmas. can you imagine? that kind of stress and here we are this morning on sunday just two days after this tornado ripped through this region with no answers as far as a path forward for the families and people that have lost their homes, and their livelihoods. back to you. >> devastating news. >> for sure robert real quick where are families going that dongt have homes anymore? at least in the very temporary term. >> that's a really great question. there are aid groups that have come into the region and they are setting up temporary shelters. there are towns you know up and down the mississippi delta sporadically this is a rural area this is agriculture, this

there for the rest of the world. just showing the importance of africa. >> interesting to note she did not go to the congo and i think there's a lot of optics involved in why she avoided congo that is where more than half of all of the cobalt is extracted there in mines there. these mines employ over 40,000 kids that work in cobalt mines is dangerous. it's hard back breaking work difficult for either of you two to do it let alone little children who are seven, eight, nine years old. it is absolutely unbelievable 20% of it is mined by hand which is why they want little kids working these are owned by the chinese. very clear that the biden administrations war on fossil fuels is fueling this very cruel human rights abuse and these mines are run by chinese. >> yeah and numbers tell that story rachel when you look at the amount of foreign investment in africa.
4:08 am
china is far, far and away the largest investor in africa and it's not the way our state department might invest which is around, you know, human rights programs or climate change, or womens empowerment. these are things that our state department emphasize china is throwing hard dollars at cobalt at mining, at, you know, debt relief that they then put under the thumb of those countries and so they're able to control them. that's a number they use for their -- to advance their strategic interest. >> soft dollars to translate into hard power. >> yeah. you know, this is in part a story about cobalt and climate change is also in part a story about united states and influence on the world stage and we've had conversations -- and i've had conversations with people who said africa is lost. we lost already -- to africa. to china, and latin america i think you're probably headed there rachel. but we're headed same direction of latin america. >> absolutely you brought up a
4:09 am
great point if you see latin america what's interesting is exactly what you say. our state department is investing in lbgtq, rights climate making poor people in central america really worried about the climate right now. you know this is stuff we're invested in china and we doesn't mean we have to extract resources way that chinese are but many of the companies in latin america will say, that our government isn't our state department isn't interested in advancing u.s. latin american commerce which would be a great way to -- >> things that really matter for those countries. to upset and we don't want to work with china but who else are regoing work with you're not here. >> what we're delivering them is kamala harris right now all of the foreign trips have gone great but you have info for us. >> today honduras is opening up and severing ties with taiwan. so this is a big deal by the way this lady here, who runs

4:11 am
>> we're talking about big countries argentina, brazil -- we're talking about the brick countries but then argentina joining as well. this is a lot of influence for china. >> it is taking over resources but it is also the typical thing that we also see here buying off elites. buying off people in charge who know they can just for a generation -- for several generations make sure that their families are well off. but they sell out their countries in the process and it's happening all over latin america and it will be very difficult if not impossible to unwind this biden administration asleep at the wheel. >> kamala harris said she's doing a lot of reading -- and listening to experts in advance of her trip to africa. so -- >> i hope she has -- i hope she has the guts while she's in africa to go see those little children working in the mines who are little -- basically slaves and they are fueling this green energy. we have fossil fuel here that we can use instead doing this in africa. >> take it to bank she won't
