bring dan hoffman, spent 5 years in moscow and fox news contributor. why do you think putin did this and may have ordered the arrest? >> i would say with a high level of confidence that vladimir putin did order the arrest. i think of immediate concern of vladimir putin is that he cannot allow a journalist to report accurately on russia's subservants to china and putin is seeking to suppress any form of freedom of expression in his country. that's the first reason and he wants to drive up spy hysteria against the west that the enemy is not just at the gates but inside the gates and wants security services to be looking for spies, that's anybody who happens to be contradicting vladimir putin and he wants that kind of an atmosphere. it's a real throwback to the soviet days where you've got

russian citizens informing on each other like they did during the soviet times and then the third thing that i think we are seeing here and it's a longer element of tragic story because evan was -- is going to be convicted i'm sure on espionage charges, vladimir putin is going to want to strike a deal to get one of his own guys out who has been detained and arrested for espionage charges and that might be sergey, intelligence officer who was arrested in brazil. he's been indicted by our doj and maybe extradited to the united states. eric: with that arrest, do you see actually a direct link, another young man accused of russian spy who was astatic because of accepted at john hopkins, according to the documents the u.s. intercepted communication with the russian handler saying, look, we are the big boys now, we got into john

hopkins all part of russian effort to spy on us and because of that arrest, they went and ga--grabbed evan? >> yeah, this is obviously the way that vladimir putin would like to portray these two cases. obviously there's -- they have nothing in common whatsoever. evan is -- certainly wasn't conducting anything close to spying. he was doing his job as journalist but putin sees the world as chess board and he's going the want to take two of the same pieces off the board and he's going to want to establish this false equiv equivalency. and the longer he keeps evan in -- in detention, i can tell you i've been to lefortov prison, it's a nasty place and the more pressure that comes on our side to secure evan's release and we should be pushing for that but
11:09 am
that's going to drive up the price that vladimir putin demands that we pay. and it's a disgusting way that russia operates these days but, again, this is the same country that's committing massive war crimes in ukraine, killing innocent civilians and targeting maternity wards and kidnapping children. i guess we shouldn't be surprised that they detained a journalist unlawfully in their own country. eric: putin a mass murderer whose name is going down no infamy. what do you think he can expect and process ongoing as we follow his case? >> well, apparently we still don't have counselor access to him. no one from the embassy has visited him. i hope and praise, 31 year's old. i hope he doesn't have preexisting medical conditions because we know from the case of paul wayland if you do have medical issues, they are not going to get better sitting in soviet-style pe penal colony.
