nuclear weapons. >> the nuclear blackmail is one of the tools russia has exploited since the very beginning of the invasion. before u.s. ukraine calling out russia yesterday during a cap security council session putin's threat to put nuclear weapons in belarus border is not just but also nato ally poland, just one more way putin is ratcheting up tensions with the west, fox news contributor at pepperdine university. before we delve into the case and call for the release of her wall street journal reporting colleague evan gershkovich and call for him to be freed, let's talk about putin and his most motives. do you think he is trying to up the tensions and continue his threats with this threat to put nuclear weapons in belarus? >> absolutely.

all of these activities coming out of the kremlin and moscow are connected. i think it is absolutely clear that putin as he has not had the kind of military victory that he has wanted since last summer, almost a year ago that he is looking to deflect attention, create more noise, divide the west and none of it is actually working. so we have the newest hostage crisis going on while he is talking about putting nuclear sites in belarus. soon after he and his team downed a u.s. or drone an international airspace, above the black sea. every week there is a new and more serious activity. we have not mentioned the fact he has pulled out of the new

huge disaster for the countries he is relying on. for example, in belarus what's happening in that country now is a major blow to the freedom of movement the freedom and democracy movement of the country. and although he has the leader in his back pocket, everything i am hearing suggest the country does not want to be just a pawn in the nuclear brinksmanship of russia. no heart doesn't want to be fully divided from the west. it has its own ambitions in terms of the european union and other countries associated with nato. so i do not think we will see a shift in what putin is going to do. a continual attempt to divide the west. more behavior on the ground in the war that will not lead to the victories that he wants. hopefully no more hostages, the wall street journal one is particularly troublesome we have
1:28 pm
not, as you noted earlier have had an american journalist taking hostage since 1986. in the intensive diplomacy of the reagan administration to free nicholas i do not think will work in this particular case. pollutant will hold onto the american journalist as long as he can. i think of that initiative of hostage taking is something we need to really develop a stronger, clearer and more consistent policy. because although all of us wanted brittney griner home for minor drug charges, we traded a hardened arms dealer who was targeting american citizens and working with terrorists. i think that opens the door for more hostages on the russian side, building cases against pso. mr. wheel and remains there. all of these things are helping
1:29 pm
i think putin is the fact he has something some leverage against us. he is searching around for leverage, we do not seem to have it. before you mention the notorious russian's arms dealer and that thought there is some thought that evan gershkovich could be swap for young brazilian man they say has been arrested for spying for russia who was posing who got into johns hopkins international school of international studies, very prestigious. you think that played into putin's inking and that maybe there could be a swap for them? are you more fearful the case for evan who we went out there may be broader implications for that? >> i think there are broader implications. my sense is this will not go as smoothly or as quickly as we want like the 1986k super think there are multiple factors
1:30 pm
perhaps the brazilian you just mentioned. but also, since this war putin has clamped down on free speech and domestic reporters and journalism in his own country. he is now turning his critical fire to war correspondents. and i think that is part of this equation as well he is stealing his country offer any discussion about what is actually happening in the war. that is troublesome they are and that to me suggests that he could take more foreign correspondence and he could keep the american in jail for much longer. eric: we are calling and praying for evan gershkovich to be released for a while surgeon recalling here at fox news, we can only think of his family and that will come sooner than we predict, we hope it does, kiron skinner always good to see you, thank you. >> thank you. molly: a new around a fox polling shows most americans still disapprove a present

economic conditions were much better and people felt much safer overall. and so i do not know exactly what biden is doing to keep those numbers afloat. it might be a contrast with republicans but it might be how proactive he has been messaging on his record. but liberals, especially the base of the democratic voters need to stick by him. because they need this guy. i do not know who any of the viable alternatives are. biden was successful in 2020. liberals did really wellin 2022 despite the conditions. and so it is really e if he is . if noth parties have eating candidates and facing big challenges. some of the challenges similar to the legal issues regarding both men we are ahead of what is

1:41 pm
vice president, carmel harris she is consistently in the mid- 30s and he is in the low 40s. i have researched approval of circuits we have never seen that kind of got before. she is more unpopular than he is and so our key surrogates like pete buttigieg. in january we saw his approval was about 39%. it's probably even lower after the ohio train derailment. i just do not know who else they have so they have to stick with biden if they know what is in their best interest. but for republicans there is somewhat of an appetite among about half a primary voters for an alternative. they stick with trump and he is very far ahead right now, then they really risk and opportunity at winning back the white house and have very good chance of that. >> how does an alternative come to the forefront on either side? will it take someone to officially step aside in some respect what is it take for a nether candidate to move in?
1:42 pm
>> it does. the way our system is set up pretty much anyone with few exceptions can run for president of the united states. that includes a trump with all of his baggage. but there are so many potential candidates. we are looking at a field very similar potentially incised to what there was in 2016. and trump took up all of the oxygen. he was much better known he has built-in support right now by about 10 percentage points that even ron desantis who has capitalize on every opportunity he has had and has done better than other governors thinking about running across the country, is very far behind as you are saying to catch up. and so it is really hard to rally around an alternative unless it donors and elites within the party, and less primary voters that really care encourage some these other candidates that are thinking of
1:43 pm
running to step aside. and i do not think that is going to happen for it i think they are all doing a one -- 5% and maybe one of them will be the republican vice presidential nominee. but as long as that field is huge it will absolutely benefit the former president. >> there some polling that shows the indictment, the arrest might be helping the former president trump: wise. but thank you so much we really appreciate your insight this afternoon, thank you for joining us because i don't know about that but we can talk about it another time life i quickly go foreshadowing we shall see. thank you. before they'll be next weekend's topic so we will see. migrants have been taking drastic action to try to avoid the border patrol as they come into our country. stretching the agents to the limits on the southern border we are alive on the southern border to tell you about the story, straight ahead here on "fox new live". like a smart coffee grinder - that orders fresh beans for you.
