except that one day during covid. >> you told me you walked. both of you have been on ride to work. i love this episode, because to quote tim mcgraw, you're so humble and kind. i'm excited for people to see this. >> thank you so much. great to see you. take care of the voice. we need you out there. >> i sound like kermit the frog, i know it. >> you've been on the road. >> i have. thanks for having me. >> "the faulkner focus" is up next. here's harris. >> we begin with live pictures from france, where people are upset because their entitlements are changing. yeah, you need a lot of cash to give people the kinds of requirements and time off and things that they have in parts of europe. people want to hang on to that, so they are protesting. a day of nationwide protests against the pension bill that president emanuel macron just pushed through despite widespread opposition. it raises, for example, the retirement age from 62 to 64.
8:01 am
police fired tear gas at these protesters, who threw projectiles at them and set bins on fire. people also are not stopping this situation. we'll monitor it, bring it to you, in a live report. so none of that is keeping them out of the streets. the police are trying their best to corral them. pretty peaceful in this picture that we see right now. some of the video that we've seen come in has been kind of back and forth between how rowdy the situation gets. this is a battle over what can france afford to pay for anymore, and people who say they deserve to have what they've worked for all their lives.
8:02 am
i'm harris faulkner. you are in "the faulkner focus." a bipartisan congressional delegation just touched down in taiwan today, one day after house speaker kevin mccarthy defied china's threats and met with taiwan's president in california. china still claims sovereignty over taiwan, something the united states does not recognize. in response to that meeting, china threatened they would quote not sit idly by. however, speaker mccarthy remained defiant, sending a clear message. >> i'm the speaker of the house. there's no place that china is going to tell me where i can go or who i can speak to, whether you be foe or be friend.
8:03 am
>> that's strong. the white house more gentle. feels like spin, insisting that meeting was not out of the norm. >> the message to them, this is not uncommon. it's not official. and there's no reason for them to react in any sort of an aggressive manner. >> this is something that's been part of a long tradition, a long u.s. tradition. there should not be a reason for the pcr to overreact here. >> in fact, you'll remember nancy pelosi went when she was house speaker just a few months ago, but that not official line. we'll get into that. what does that mean? does the white house -- is it really snowflaking this, or does it really back its people no matter what their politics are in the house? well, they're still on eggshells after that china spy craft incident apparently. and even more so now with a new report revealing that flight was collecting intelligence in real time as it was flying over our
8:04 am
top-secret military sites. you know, doing figure eights. no way did they not get that back to china. now we know. mark meredith is live outside the white house. mark? >> heirs, good morning to you. the white house continues to yawn play the impact of the taiwanese visit to the u.s., however we're also still waiting to see whether this ratchets up tensions between the u.s. and china even higher. on wednesday, as you mentioned, multiple lawmakers from both parties met face-to-face with taiwan's president at the ronald reagan library outside los angeles. we were waiting to see whether or not this had any major impact on u.s. relations, but lawmakers say the meeting and those recently held in new york should energize future engagement with taiwan. >> it's important that we just show that taiwan is an extremely good partner to the united
8:05 am
states, and we need to strengthen our trade. we need to make sure military transfers are going through as quickly as possible. and we need to assist with training the taiwan military. >> china itself remains engaged on this issue, even sending letters to u.s. lawmakers visiting taiwan this week. while we're told the letters are not uncommon, they certainly are direct. the chinese embassy writing to the lawmakers, quote, the very cope of china's core interest, the bedrock of the political foundation of china-u.s. relationships, and a line that must not be crossed. some argue the red line has already been crossed, pointing to the spy balloon that the chinese are not playing by the rules, while the administration refuses to say how much information the balloon captured when it flew over multiple u.s. military sites. >> we took precautions in advance to ensure it didn't get
8:06 am
sensitive information. the bottom line is this is an administration that identified the problem and took action. >> we were hoping that maybe we'd get a chance to talk to president biden about any impact on the taiwan issue, or what's been happening with the balloon, but the president, no public events on his schedule today, getting ready to head to camp david for the easter weekend, but there's a press briefing at the podium this afternoon. harris? >> mark, thank you very much. brian mast of florida sits on the house foreign affairs committee, a army veteran, awarded a purple heart, bronze star for his service to our nation. we're so grateful, that you are serving now as a congressman. tell me from the committee that you sit on what are the greatest dangers that you all are looking at right now with regard to china. >> a number of things. so the term was used, escalating tensions between china and the united states. here's the reasons i can give you in a nutshell as to why. they have the most rapidly advancing nuclear arsenal of any
8:07 am
country. you have north korea on the peripheral just today saying that the united states and north korea are rapidly pushing toward nuclear war. that's not a coincidence that they're testing america at the same time. you have china essentially on wednesday imposing a naval blockade around taiwan, telling merchant ships they're going to be subject to random inspections at different times. they're constantly saying they're pushing the united states -- this is china -- saying they're pushing the united states navy out of what they claim to be their waters. we've heard numerous times they're saying taiwan is a red line for china, but don't hear the united states saying it is a red line for the united states of america. i would sum this up in just one other place to say, you know, you look at this, many people have said that taiwan is the -- or rather china is the new cold war with the united states of america. i believe that to be true. in that being true, i believe that taiwan is the new east/west germany of this cold war. >> oh, what could that
8:08 am
potentially mean? >> so you look at that as a battleground. not just in the way that east/west germany played things out for europe during the cold war with russia. look at the way that we are dependent upon resources, semiconductors, other things, coming out of taiwan, the way that this is a disputed territory, the way that china is saying this is a red line. even when speaker mccarthy steps up to the microphone and says, listen, china, you don't get to tell me who i speak to, where i speak to them, when i speak to them. i'm the speaker of the house of representatives. he's not getting backed up by the administration, by the white house. they should be saying, no, you should take this very seriously, china. this is an escalating situation. we see this as a red line, and we are going to back taiwan. you see backing away from the white house. that's not what we want. >> yeah. we just showed it. i'm just basicallied by the words of admirable kirby on behalf of the white house, his

new position as national security advisor, not official. i mean do those words matter? it felt like they were soft pedaling it, everything our officials do. they're called officials. we mean it. we're doing it on purpose. why won't the white house give it that? >> it doesn't just feel like they were backpedaling it and handling it softly. that's absolutely what we were doing. we didn't even bring up the spy balloon, other instances going on. they are not standing firm in the face of this, saying, taiwan, you can count on us. another thing that we could put into play in this whole situation, ukraine. obviously we know vladimir putin, and xi, some say they might have a bromance, if that's a term you want to use. very close relationship. around the olympics, vladimir putin said there are no limits to their relationship. so every time we're paying attention to what's going on between russia and the you can,,

that's less that china is under the microscope and the globe, something that china absolutely loves about this situation. >> the united states is facing pressure over detained "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich, sitting in a russian president ahead of his espionage trial. secretary of state antony blinken says this. >> in evan's case, we are working through the determination on wrongful detention. it's something we're working through very deliberately, but expeditiously as well. in my own mind, there's no doubt that he's being wrongfully detained by russia. >> just a little housekeeping here, congressman. i do understand they need that wrongful detention determination to rev up government efforts to get him home. that's a process that they must go through. >> i believe fully that antony
8:11 am
blinken, as much as we have disagreement on many i think so this, we see each other on committee often, i believe they're working through the official processes of doing this. here's where their hands are tied behind their back. russia is looking at this, saying, well, if the united states of america was willing to give up what everybody called the merchant of death, a top arms dealer for russia, for a wnba player on a pot charge, what are they willing to give up for a "wall street journal" reporter charged for espionage, facing decades in prison, or possibly even death, that's where the united states of america is in a very tough negotiating situation, because of what was done previously in my opinion. >> well, paul whalen's family, we know another came home in december, about the time of brittney griner. we got that person out. mark fogle, a history teacher from pittsburgh. i have a list up to 50 people around the world, not just in russia, that we need to do

negotiations with to bring home. but for the fogle family, for the whalen family, you bring up a brilliant question, what will it take to bring them home? we have to make them a priority. i don't know how you do that with the bromance you just described between russia and china. wow. congressman, thank you very much no being in focus. >> always good to see you. >> breaking news. we started here off the top, and it has gotten a little bit more interesting again. clashes have erupted in paris during its day of nationwide protests against a pension bill that president emanuel mook has pushed through, despite widespread opposition as i mentioned earlier. people have been in the streets for weeks now, and they wanted him out. he managed to fend them off. he still has his job. now the things he's pushing through, they don't have the money to keep everybody paid forever. he's wanting to raise the

retirement from 62 to age 64. people are, as you can see, in the streets over it. affected by these protests, harris. this is the 11th nationwide day of protests france has seen in the last three months. we're watching the live images coming in now. we're seeing skirmishes between protesters and police, tear gas being hurled earlier on this day. we saw the canopy of french president macron's favorite brasseries on the left bank go
8:14 am
up in flames. they're serious today. as you know, it's about this hike in the retirement age from 62 to 64. from most countries perspectives, it doesn't seem like a radical thing, but for the french it's very, very serious. president macron had to ram the legislation through his parliament without a proper vote, and that got people even more angry. he stood by it. i think what we're looking at now, harris, is that next week, next friday, this bill will be examined by their constitutional court in france. i think the hope is that maybe some of this heat on the street might affect some of the judges deciding on this. somehow maybe bits of it, i doubt the whole piece of legislation, but bits of it might be held up, or even thrown out by this court. you might ask where french president macron is right now. well, he's in china, with president xi over there, trying

to drum over whatever support he can get, probably in the business sphere. he says he's pushing the west's cause on various fronts with china. apparently he decided to get out of town. maybe his timing was right. we will be tracking this. more disturbances once again. the 11th day of national protests, just in the past three months, harris. >> china is becoming ubiquitous. they talk to the people who are at stress points. they talk to our enemies. they bring sunnis and shiah together with saudi arabia and iran. i mean, they're at the center of just about everything right now. congressman mast of florida was just talking about it. we had better wake up. by the way, it's hard to put money in the coffers unless you can go get some money. yeah, where does macron go? china. wow. greg, great reporting. thank you very much. >> thank you. >> a north carolina state lawmaker just ditched the democratic party, saying that party is unrecognizable.

johnson, who wants to make america look like chicago? >> what i would say to brandon johnson, harris, to your question, i think that schools should be safe places for children, even if the children have come here illegally, have crossed the border. i would say that each mayor has to decide what is most important to the citizens of their city. if the cities elected him and said we want our city to be one where we welcome immigrants, even if they have not come here through the legal process, look, if citizens don't like that, to charlie's point, they can vote brandon johnson out in the next election. >> wow. who's going to deal with the crime? i mean, that's what everybody said they cared about. i can't imagine they weren't telling the truth about that. let's get to this. the white house press secretary stumbled over an answer about why president biden won't be attending the coronation of king charles iii. first lady jill biden will be in his place. she'll take the trip instead. according to reports, white house insiders were worried about president biden's age and
